Responsible Sourcing

A Year Like No Other…

COVID Hits… • A COVID task force formed, meeting daily to manage the emerging situation • Site Management Plan used as basis for managing the operational floor and retail precinct

• Provided crucial service continuity to the industry here in NSW and beyond. • Trading volumes remained steady with some positive increases

• Industry demonstrated significant resilience – supported by SFM as the trading outlet

Open For Business • Easter became a significant proof point for SFM’s ability to continue operating throughout the pandemic • 50,000 visitors were onsite throughout the Easter long weekend • Close consultation with NSW Police and NSW Health – COVID safe measures ensuring customer safety

• Significant media interest resulted in a press conference to help inform the public about the measures, as well as 760 pieces of coverage for the period.

Positive Pivots – SSS@Home • When Sydney Seafood School had to suspend face-to-face classes, needed an alternative offering to keep staff employed, support suppliers and engage with suppliers – SSS@Home was born! • SSS@Home is a weekly virtual cooking class comprising a video, detailed printed recipe, and the ingredients necessary to create a special meal for two people at home. "SSS@Home is one of the most creative and joyous outcomes of Covid. We love the consistently high-quality ingredients, the opportunity to try produce or dishes we haven’t had before (like Moreton Bay bugs in their shell, which I’ll certainly buy again), learning so much with different chefs and dishes, including helpful tips from Jen in the videos and the remarks in the recipe booklets. Overall the package of experience is superb." Peter (Lane Cove)

Positive Pivots – Hooked on Home Delivery • SFM Retailers quickly shifted focus to home delivery – bringing fresh Australian seafood direct to customers • Success of these additions has ensured they are permanent fixtures in the overall retailer value proposition.

Safety First • Significant consultation with NSW Police and NSW Health resulting in an Event Management Plan • COVID restrictions may have eased, but social distancing requirements remain. • The main carpark is closed, with alternative parking nearby. • Single point of entry to the site for the general public, allowing management of registration (via QR code) and temperature testing, as well as socially distanced queuing (each visitor/group 1.5m apart).

The Future

New Digital Trading Platform • Provides all industry stakeholders - Fishers, Co-ops, Wholesalers and Retailers - with an open, transparent and efficient marketplace via a best-in-class online trading system. • Supplements SFM’s existing physical market and business model and facilitates a broader range of transactions. • Enables more efficient trade, an open-data approach and simple payment mechanisms, and interface with NSW DPI reporting systems. • This platform and the new SFM development are both strongly supported by NSW Government, two major initiatives to ensure the NSW seafood industry’s long-term vitality and growth.
