MASTERS AIR OF THE

The new Apple TV+ series Masters of the Air follows the stories of the US Airmen who served in the legendary 100th Bomb Group, during the Second World War. Nicknamed ‘The Bloody Hundredth’, due to the high concentration of losses during the allied bombing campaigns, Masters of the Air depicts the lives of these Airmen stationed in East Anglia, carrying out dangerous missions over Nazi-occupied Europe. As historical consultants to the series, IWM Duxford helped Apple TV+ bring the story and locations to life through IWM’s expertise and rich archival collections.

During the Second World War, Duxford was home to the United States Army Air Force 78th Fighter Group, who escorted heavy bombers on their missions into Nazi Germany. Today IWM Duxford is Britain’s best preserved Second World War airfield and inside every hangar and exhibition, visitors can discover iconic aircraft and historic objects from IWM’s collection telling the stories of men and women who served at RAF Duxford.

The American Air Museum at IWM Duxford, contains the largest collection of American military aircraft on display outside of the United States and stands as a memorial to the 30,000 members of the United States Army Air Forces who died while flying from Britain during the Second World War. Inside, visitors can get up close to our B-17 Flying Fortress, discover what life was like for those who flew, and hear stories from people on the ground who loved, lived and worked with the air crews of the Eighth Air Force.

Visit IWM Duxford today and pick up the free Masters of the Air: The Americans at Duxford guide at the Visitor Centre to explore the stories, objects and places related to the Eighth Air Force and dive deeper into the stories depicted on Masters of the Air.

15 LOVE SUMMER | EXPLORING

A sculpture trail of towering proportions has taken over Cambridge this spring with over 90 gentle giants from the African plains take up home on the city’s streets from 21 March - 2 June 2024. This brand-new sculpture trail, follows on from the success of Cows about Cambridge in 2021 and is brought to you by local charity Break, together with delivery partners Wild in Art, and trail partners Cambridge BID and Alan Boswell Group.

Cambridge Standing Tall will see 31 beautifully decorated giraffe sculptures take up residence across the city, all sponsored by a local business and designed by an established artist. Trotting alongside them are over 60 Mini Gs, each created by local schools and community groups.

Not only will these beautiful creatures capture the imagination of Cambridge residents and visitors alike, they’ve also got a very important job to do – to help raise the vital funds for Break to continue their vital work in supporting the county’s young care leavers.

Why a giraffe?

It isn’t every day you see a giraffe walking the streets of Cambridge, but there are a lot of reasons why these majestic animals are the perfect choice:

They have really big hearts. Not all that surprising as there could be up to 5.5m between a giraffe’s hooves and the ossicones on the top of its head. To achieve this feat, a giraffe’s heart is two feet long, 11kg in weight, and is strong enough to give giraffes the highest blood pressure of any mammal. For the young people that Break support, they need someone with a big heart give them all the love they need to help them reach their full potential.

They’re all unique. A giraffe’s spots are like a fingerprint, just like the young people that this trail will support, everyone is unique.

They like roaming around in groups called towers. They usually live in herds of 15 and support one another on the African plains, just as Break work together with their young people to make sure they never feel alone.

They are the tallest land mammals. The large Gs will be 2.5m in stature and the Mini Gs will measure up at 1.5m but their real-life compatriots can tower over 5m in height! Through Break’s life-long offer they always stand tall with the young people they support so they know that nothing is out of their reach.

#bemoregiraffe @breaktrailcambs Cambridgestandingtall.co.uk 16

Give a giraffe a home!

Charity Auction, 19 June, Graduate Cambridge

You could be the proud owner of one these gentle giants! Hosted by celebrity auctioneer Natasha Raskin Sharp, this stunning event will see these majestic beasts go under the hammer to raise vital funds for Break.

Standing tall for young care leavers

Reaching the age of 18 should be a celebration but for young people in care turning 18 changes their status meaning they legally have to leave the care system and move on from wherever they were living, often with little support.

With the limited choices available to around the 10,000 young people who leave care each year in England they are over three times more likely than their peers to be not in education, employment or training, and it’s estimated that 26% of the homeless population have care experience.

But charities like Break ensure care leavers can safely take that journey towards independence, offering safe housing and all the practical and emotional support that any good family would give –and the promise of lifelong support means that they are never alone.

Through map donations, app downloads, events, merchandise sales, everyone taking part in the trail will be standing tall with young care leavers.

“When I left care at 18, I had no idea how to live independently. Today, I’m much more confident. I’ve got my own flat and I’m doing an apprenticeship. None of this would’ve been possible without Break and they really mean their lifelong offer. Even though I now need less support, they have been there whenever I’ve needed them and that’s really comforting to know.” Mel, young care leaver

Everything you need to know about how to find the giraffes!

These tall legged beauties are hiding out all over the city. If you’re gearing up to take on the trail you can pick up a map at one of the trail hubs, with a suggested donation of £1 to Break:

• Hilton Cambridge City Centre

• Cambridge BID Ambassadors at Peas Hill or CB1 near train station

• Gonville Hotel

• Heffers Bookstore

• Break charity shop, Sawston

• Storey’s Field Centre Eddington
