FOUNDER & CEO
If you are a KOKET admirer than you know my signature colors are black and gold. My love for these bold, edgy colors goes far beyond my brand, walk into my closet and it is mostly a sea of black. When it comes to living in color it has never really been my forte. I occasionally purchase colorful designs, mostly in accessories, and I do love a beautiful jewel tone and definitely have a passion for fuschia. But truly embracing color in my life has always felt a bit against my natural grain. That is until recently. For this fourth edition of Love Happens, we chose to dive into the world of green luxury. We explore sustainable living, also not my forte, but something I am learning to embrace as I am often inspired by nature and of course want to preserve its beauty. We also explore nature-inspired design, a theme often found in KOKET despite my minimal connection to living outdoors (excluding by the pool or on the beach)! I have always been intrigued by nature’s exotic side, drawn to exquisite orchids, brilliant agate stones and captivating animals like snakes and crocodiles. While nature is filled with color, green is by far the most prominent. We think green and we think nature. To be honest I have always really disliked the color green, especially moss green and green vegetables. The only green I owned was a couple of jade pieces and they had to be the perfect shade of
10
green. Living green, not just eco-living, but even eating vegetables has always been a forced thing for me—and you know how we all love to rebel against forced things. Perhaps I also rebelled against green because it felt unluxurious to me. Recently, however, I have grown to really appreciate the beauty and allure of green. I even found myself loving avocados and avocado green! I hope you enjoy this edition of Love Happens as much as my team and I do and may it inspire you to live in green luxury!
With love always, Janet Morais, FOUNDER & CEO @JANETLAKOKET

EDITOR’Snote
F
or as long as I can remember nature has been my happy place. From the warm sun on my face and the brilliant greens of the plant kingdom to the brisk air of fall and the peaceful stillness of snow falling, I feel at home in nature.
Growing up in Vermont I spent my childhood surrounded by mountains, waterways, and woods. These natural phenomenons were the backdrop of my life. In the summers I vacationed on the beaches of Massachusetts and Maine and in the winters to the mountains of Northern California and Colorado. Today nature is my religion. I find myself drawn to it not only for peace but for reflection, entertainment, and endless inspiration. It reminds me of the vastness of life and the importance of savoring every moment. While my love for nature, of course, drives me to want to protect and preserve it, living an eco-friendly sustainable lifestyle can be a challenge. An extra step, an extra dollar, etc. With two little kids, two crazy dogs and a packed schedule finding this extra time is far from easy. But I strive to do my part. And I am so grateful for all the people doing all the many things that make living a sustainable life easier. All this being said I was beyond excited when we decided the theme of our fourth edition of Love Happens would be the green side of luxury! I was so invigorated by all the nature-inspired designers and people working to protect our earth that we had the honor of featuring in this issue. From Italian artist Emanuela Crotti’s Poetic Diary (p. 92), Rossana Orlandi’s Guiltlessplastic Project (p. 44) and Positive Luxury’s sustainability butterfly stamp of approval (p. 82) to Paris-based
design firm Studio AMV’s fresh young and ambitious talent (p. 48) and Robyn Jensen’s stunning nature-inspired Saudi Arabian royal villa project (p. 26)—thank you to all who were part of bringing this issue to life. And to the amazingly talented team of empowering female writers who helped tell the stories on these pages!
Cheers to living in eco-conscious green luxury!

DESIGN STATEMENT ALEXANDER MCQUEEN’S S/S 2008 READY-TO-WEAR COLLECTION
words by: Samantha Baird
OBJECT DESIRE CLAUDE LALANNE’S CROCODILE SERIES Inspired by flora and fauna, Surrealism and Art Nouveau, the French sculptor Claude Lalanne’s iconic Crocodile series first came to life at a Parisian zoo under a full moon at midnight in 1972. After deciding to incorporate the crocodile’s unique form into her bronze work and realizing that the only way to replicate its intricate details was with the actual animal, Lalanne requested an appointment with a zoo director. He agreed to give her the remains of a deceased crocodile so she waited for the circle of life to reach its end, and when the crocodile died she visited the
zoo to pick it up. Then began this crocodile’s transformation into its next life—a beautiful work of art. Using galvanoplasty, Lalanne applied a metal deposit through electric current on the crocodile to capture its form. Next, she used bronze casting to translate the reptilian motif into this famed armchair, and numerous other acclaimed furniture designs. Lalanne’s talent for taking nature and recreating it with elegant whimsy, coupled with the story behind this piece makes it a highly desired object—so much so that in 2017 a single armchair sold for $1.2 million!
When it comes to design statements in fashion, Alexander McQueen’s Spring/Summer 2008 Ready-to-Wear collection made quite the impact both in the world of fashion and on the designer’s career. The collection was a tribute to McQueen’s mentor and the woman credited with discovering him, Isabella “Issie” Blow, who commit suicide in 2007. McQueen was fascinated by the beauty and savagery of the natural world and this collection highlighted many of his iconic design elements. In particular birds, a beloved creature to McQueen and symbolic of his relationship with Blow, who once defined his clothes as moving like birds. From the massive and extravagant butterfly headpieces to the intricate placement of feathers and bird-of-paradise prints, the collection also referenced some of Blow’s favorite motifs. A striking and bold statement collection, McQueen honored his mentor by bringing out the best in himself which in turn led to a pivotal moment in his career.
SAGRADA FAMÍLIA BY ANTONI GAUDÍ WALLIS SIMPSON’S CARTIER PANTHER BRACELET
18
In 1952, an exquisite, and undeniably iconic, piece of jewelry entered society on the wrist of Miss Wallis Simpson, Duchess of Windsor. The platinum, diamond and onyx panther bracelet with piercing marquise-shaped emerald eyes was commissioned from Cartier and co-designed by the Duchess with jeweler Jeanne Toussaint. To properly capture the identity of such a desirable beast Toussaint studied the large cats at Paris’s Zoo de Vincennes. In 1987, after the Duchess’s death, a collection of her jewels including the bracelet were auctioned through Sotheby’s where Egyptian businessman Mohamed Al Fayed purchased it for $1.4 million. Twenty-six years later the iconic bracelet returned to Sotheby’s where four telephone bidders raised its price to over $7 million before it was finally purchased by an anonymous buyer. This jewelry classic is sure to live on for many generations to come!
The iconic, yet still incomplete, Sagrada Família, located in Barcelona, Spain, is a one-of-a-kind temple. In 1883, the renowned architect Antoni Gaudí took over its design from Francisco de Paula del Villar and so began the extensive structure’s long history. One of Gaudi’s most famous phrases was “originality is returning to the origin”. And in his eyes, the origin of life began with nature. So it is no coincidence that organic forms and techniques played a strong role in Sagrada Família’s design. With 135 years of unique design, endless construction efforts and 3 million visitors a year, just imagine the stories this building’s walls could tell! Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its iconic, unique form—a piece of art unlike anything else— it is anticipated that Sagrada Família will be completed on the 100th anniversary of Gaudi’s death, in 2026.

he blue of the sky, the deep navy of the ocean, the green of the grass, the orange to yellow to red to pink to purple of the sun as it rises, shines, then sets. From the glittering sharp angles of an amethyst to the soft white sand of a tropical beach. The rage of a hurricane to the soft patter of Spring rain. From the rough texture of tree bark to the smooth velvety leaves of lamb’sear. Over 20,000 species of orchids and 90,000 species of bugs, all varying in color, shape, and size. The birth of a robin from a brilliant turquoise egg to the 24-hour lifespan of a mayfly. The iridescent beauty of a peacock’s feathers to the glow of a bioluminescent. From the bold and perfectly placed strips of a tiger to the artistry of butterflies’ wings. Nature is the oldest and richest source of design inspiration. From the prehistoric cave paintings of animals and vegetation in Lascaux, France (estimated to be over 20,000 years old), to the plein air paintings of Romanticism and the curving, organic and natural motifs of Art Nouveau to the Environmental-activist art of today, and far beyond, humans have always been inspired by natural phenomena. Through direct translations, whimsical, innovative or stylized interpretations, whether designing a dress or a chandelier, creating a symphony, or inventing a cure for cancer—nature inspires. Tangible and a relative constant in our ever-changing lives, from birth, nature is there delighting us and providing endless sources of inspiration. Humans naturally respond to things
24
that move them and so for those who choose to create it is impossible to imagine that nature would do anything but inspire. From biophilia (a hypothesis that “suggests that humans possess an innate tendency to seek connections with nature and other forms of life.” see page 58) to biomimicry (“the design and production of materials, structures, and systems that are modeled on biological entities and processes.”)—as humans we have recognized that nature, thanks to evolution and natural selection, offers up highly efficient ways to solve all sorts of problems. However, while we may have uncovered and dissected some of nature’s magical ways to create things, such as shark-skin inspired swimwear, lotus leaf inspired textiles, and a jellyfish inspired cancer-cell capturing device. With over 391,000 plant species and 8.7 million animal species, there is most certainly a lot of bioinspiration left to discover. It is not only nature’s motifs, forms and functions which inspire, the world also offers up natural materials for creation— pigments, marbles, gemstones, wood, silk, flowers, feathers, animal skins, and so on! A source of stunning materials, magnanimous power and endless inspiration, remember to pause, breath in and be thankful for this beautiful world around us. And do your best to preserve it so that it can continue to inspire future generations to come.

AT A SAUDI ARABIAN VILLA words by: Anna Bimba photography by: Mark Luscombe-Whyte
When it comes to nature-inspired interiors HH Prince Khalid Al Saud’s Riyadh Villa designed by Robyn Jensen is an ultimate expression of indoors meets outdoors, glamour meets sophisticated earthy elegance, and designer-client synergy. Prince Khalid met Robyn Jensen, Principal Designer/Owner of LA-based Jensen Interior Design, through close family friends who Robyn had previously designed homes for. There was an instant collaborative synergy. Not only did the two share a sense of humor, according to Prince Khalid, who is an architect for the large architectural firm Dar Al Handasah, but “[Robyn] had this deep commitment to bringing my architectural vision to life in this unique sophisticated blend of sculptural shapes, textures and color—and lavish detail.” As the daughter of a landscape architect and former manager of Lands and Forests for the Environmental Conservation Department of New York, Robyn grew up watching her father design parks and campgrounds in the Catskill & Adirondack Mountains and enjoying nature on family camping trips. “Environmental awareness and connecting to the beauty of nature is near and dear to my heart and essential to what informs my work as a designer”, said Robyn. So, when given the opportunity to play with the essence of “California indoor-outdoor living” for Prince Khalid’s home, Robyn was in her element! “I wanted to design the space so no matter what room you enter you never lose your connection to the outdoors. From that first moment when you enter the house you are surrounded by cool slabs of Emperador marble flanking the walls, bringing in this earthy elegance with a waterfall of light flowing out of the void over the floating staircase and a modern geometric screen overhead in matte brass finish”, said Robyn. She went on to further explain her drive and the personal nature of this stunning project, “Most importantly to me, the space tells the story of my client, who he is, his travels, what has resonance for his life. All architects have a visionary, artistic side of them that needs room to breathe.” Fueled by his overseas studies in Switzerland and London, and his inter-

national travels, Prince Khalid’s vision for his home was to “bring some of the positive design values from different societies back to Saudi Arabia—primarily simplicity, a minimalistic touch, but one that is steeped in elegance.” So, tasked with bringing Prince Khalid’s vision to life Robyn tapped into her love for nature and her personalized design approach and created what she perfectly explains as “a luxurious environment where the spirit can soar, the heart is happy and he feels connected to the source… of life, of nature, and his own tremendous creativity.” And Prince Khalid was beyond happy with the end result, “[Robyn] really got to the essence of who I was and created a design based on that knowledge so the end result is a totally customized home. She is also a stickler for supreme comfort (she made me sit on everything). She just has this knack for pared back elegance…and she’s not afraid to let elements really breathe. All of which translates to an amazing ability to create arresting moments that stop the mind and really made my home a tranquil place....She was able to draw out what is most important for me to experience in the home, to articulate and elevate my own design sensibility and in the end create something stunning—that was, honestly more than I could have ever envisioned.”

“In the Family Living Area near the pool— I found this wonderful silvery sand-colored marble and let it flow from the floor all the way up the feature wall, so the entire wall feels alive with this subtle movement like the sands beneath the shallows, with inset alcoves of white marble that house our branch light installations…so nature takes center stage. The Liquid chandelier pours out of the void like a waterfall— mirroring the infinity waterfall of the adjacent pool,” said Robyn. Making a statement on the right wall is a pair of curved Decadence etageres by our very own KOKET! And in the foreground, we see the Family Dining Room, of which Robyn said, “We found this indigo lacquer tabletop in Milan bringing the water theme into the dining room directly opposite the blue of the Olympic size pool….Above, a Serip chandelier I dubbed, “The Gilded Bird’s Nest” completes the scene. So nature and wonderful natural materials flow inside the space with an understated representational elegance and a little bit of humor.

N Edge Savage or Natural Beauty ? What do fashion, design, politics, and Captain Planet all have in common? The answer is simple—nature, and it can be found everywhere you look (indoors or out). From the never-ending ‘save the environment’ movement and enhanced efforts to ‘go green’, to trendy tropical prints and feathers in fashion, it is obvious that natural, organic beauty is in right now. But how far is too far? Should taxidermy hold a place in the design world, or is it tasteless, cruel and tacky? First thing’s first—what exactly is taxidermy? You’ve surely seen deer and elk mounted in country-western themed bars or on television, but the actual definition seems to personify taxidermy as a striking and beautiful villain straight out of a fairytale. Taxidermy is literally defined as “the art of preparing, stuffing, and mounting animal hide or skin to replicate a lifelike effect”. You’ll notice by definition taxidermy is considered an art. Stop what you’re doing and think about that for a moment… Okay, moment over. By Darwin, Sinke and van Tongeren

Was your opinion swayed one way or another? Are you grossed out at the thought of someone skinning an animal and calling it art? Concerned that a handful of people are hunting rare and prized animals solely to obtain a unique taxidermized trophy? Did you consider the numerous displays from the Victorian Era that have been beautifully kept up and recycled for generations? Or maybe how dull a trip to the Museum of Natural History would be without the soulful displays of these animals in their natural habitats? Perhaps there is a humane way to preserve the natural beauty of our wildlife. Queue the brilliant minds of Ferry van Tongeren and Jaap Sinke, the master craftsmen behind Darwin, Sinke and van Tongeren. These two truly glamorize the beauty behind taxidermy. Their wild prospects are carefully sourced, no animals are taken from the wild or executed—the mass majority are purchased from exotic-animal breeders or zoos after natural death or fatal accident occurs. From riveting reptiles to rare felines and flocks, this talented team truly breathes a second life into these animals that would otherwise go to waste.
By Darwin, Sinke and van Tongeren
Ferry and Jaap restore and preserve the natural beauty of their works in wonderous and occasionally whimsical ways you may have never imagined.
“TAXIDERMY: THE ART OF PREPARING, STUFFING, AND MOUNTING ANIMAL HIDE OR SKIN TO REPLICATE A LIFELIKE EFFECT.”
An activist may argue that the process itself is a bit of a horror show, but if the job is performed correctly there is no bloody gore or foul odor involved whatsoever. Ferry himself describes the process as “simply taking the jacket off the creature in its entirety”. By decloaking and reviving these exotic animals into tasteful and timeless artworks to be adorned and admired in designs for decades to come, it’s easy to see why taxidermy made such an impact on the industry in the first place.
The animal gallery of the Castle of the Battlefield by Jacques Garcia
While there are some who will always believe a lifeless animal in a living room is tacky or cruel, the fact that an animal was once full of life with its own story is what makes taxidermy a unique and beautiful addition to a space for those who appreciate the art form. Either way, taxidermized animals will continue to evoke emotions and eternalize a natural beauty that no man can replicate. Bellemore Chicago by Studio K Creative

LIVING THE GREEN LIFE Whether building, buying or staying put, go green at home whenever and however you can. Think about simplifying home construction and making the most of resources, a la local resources provided by nature with eco-friendly production and performance. If you’re going for the zen luxury, villa-style and decor, think green roofs and living walls. Every little bit of green living life counts. If you’re aiming to build a sustainable home, think certifying it to be respectful to the environment i.e. painting without chemicals or putting an end to being an energy vampire and using home energy LED saving lighting or installing solar panels. Beginning with your own home is more than a good way to sit pretty while respecting the environment.
POWER TO THE PLANET WITH PURCHASE POWER Channeling your purchase power by buying sustainable luxury goods is really where you might do the least harm to the planet and your Stella McCartney (leather-free) purse. Initially, one might think being eco-conscious is disruptive to your day to day but lest we say think again. You can absolutely develop habits to go green. You just have to be a little savvy and shop around.
TRAVEL IN SUSTAINABLE STYLE Looking for a green friendly luxury car? Check out the Tesla! This California based brand is tackling climate change by accelerating the world’s transition to sustainable energy with their sexy sleek cars. Not head over heels with the Tesla look? Find yourself a hybrid version of your favorite luxury brand. Buy a used car (yes this counts as an eco-friendly purchase). Or if you are looking for some exercise while you travel consider upgrading your bike for a seriously sustainable mode of local transportation complete with a kickass eco-friendly helmet, of course.
GOING GREEN WITH YOUR STYLE ROUTINE In the world of fashion and beauty, keep things in perspective and seek brands who have proven their sustainability credentials. Luxurious purchases typically have the regular hiccups of excessive waste and guilty pleasures whereas eco-friendly materials need to be made from exceptional materials with a concentration on good quality over quantity. Embrace the fulfillment of making more meaningful and better consumer choices. Check out trusted online sources with sustainable sections on sites like Net-a-Porter and Farfetch. Visit your favorite brands’ websites and see what they have to say about their sustainability practices. Making an environmental impact by building a conscious wardrobe and personal beauty counter means you can look good while also doing good.

omen have been known to wear many hats, but few possess the poise of a luxurious goddess while creating innovative advances in the world of design and sustainable living. Rossana Orlandi is a living legend that has given new meaning to gallery design and curating. Although her exhibitions are based solely in her home country of Italy, Rossana Orlandi’s unique Galleria style has influenced the likes of many designers around the world. Every year she showcases young and up-and-coming talent in her Milano and Porto Cervo based galleries. A three-dimensional creator, Rossana Orlandi selects pieces, formulates their display, and then shares her chosen creations with the design world. For the gallerist, curating provided a gift within a gift, that allowed her to introduce the world to unknown incredible talent, while also showcasing her own ingenuity. When talent meets purpose the manifestation of an iconic revolution is revealed. In 2018, the conception of the GUILTLESSPLASTIC project was just that; a revolutionary idea that would use design to solve a global plastic pollution problem. Orchestrated by the design gallerist genius herself, Rossana Orlandi, this monumental innovation has not only captured the hearts of design artists everywhere but also environmentalists. So, what is it? Rossana Orlandi, the renowned creative thinker, created a marriage between design and recycling plastic. Every year approximately 8 million tons of plastic are dumped into our oceans, affecting marine life and so much more. Rossana Orlandi found a solution. Why not spread awareness through design? She encouraged designers to find a unique way to recycle old plastic into beautiful functional designs with her initiation of the Ro Plastic Prize competition. Not only would young designers have the opportunity to take home a prize, but potentially build economic development within their city by eliminating waste and becoming more resourceful. Rossana Orlandi has seemingly become more ingenious with age; a clever imagination that began in adolescence. Born in 1943 in Cassano Magnago, a town in Lombardy, Italy about 25 miles northwest of Milan, Rossana Orlandi’s upbringing was simple and quiet. As the daughter of parents in the textile-production industry, and the youngest of four, she found herself heavily warped in her own imagination. She had dreams of Milan, which was known for its historical architecture and high-end fashion. She had exotic ideas that slowly started to infiltrate her adolescent mind.
48
It was in her teens that Rossana Orlandi encountered an icon in design that would ignite a new level of creative ingenuity. It was none other than Coco Chanel, the French fashion designer and founder of the popular brand Chanel. Rossana was amazed by this than older woman that exuded such class, prestige, and energy. Ultimately this led to her attending the Istituto Marangoni at age 17 to study textiles. She then went on to work for her family’s business for several years in the knitwear department, as she found it catered most to her ability to create from scratch. Eventually, she became a consultant working for big brand names such as Versace, Armani, and Westwood. In 2002, she launched an exhibition known as Galleria Rossana Orlandi, which at first just showcased photography. It was created from what was originally a tie factory, but in time was transformed into a unique collage of designs. Rossana Orlandi was the first woman to bring together seemingly contrasting artists and designers—forming a beautiful mesh. She quickly gained notoriety for her sharp eye in showcasing beautiful intricate and simplistic designs. However, it was her formation of designs that captured the likes of Lidewij Edelkoort, esteemed trend forecaster, and Brooklyn based designer, Fernando Mastrangelo, as well as many others. Her Galleria style is often characterized as unusual and chaotic, yet transcendent and very eccentric. Rossana Orlandi created a platform for young fresh designers that seek to take their designs to the next level. Young women with dreams of being a part of the design world now have pioneers such as Rossana Orlandi to idolize. She is now someone’s Coco Chanel, an inspiration that will launch a dream. Rossana Orlandi continues to pay it forward, creating future design legends. She is a living icon that not only inspires young women but challenges all minds to think outside the box. Currently, Rossana Orlandi operates two galleries within the Milan region. Her aura is the warmth of a tender grandmother, with the child-like energy of someone decades younger. Designer Mastrangelo has described her as the Energizer bunny, while British designer Lee Broom says she has childlike curiosity. While a real-life mother and a grandmother to 4 grandkids, she hopes to impart to her offspring the environmental consciousness that she possesses. Hence, the GUILTLESSPLASTIC project. An idea birthed out of the desire to provide future generations with an environment that they can be proud of—an uncontaminated world.
RoGarage exhibition featuring Ro Plastic Prize 2019 Finalists by Simone Furiosi
In 2019, the first edition of the Ro Plastic Prize competition, a byproduct of the GUILTLESSPLASTIC project, was launched with great success during Milan Design Week. The competition was open to all ages and backgrounds attracting hundreds of entries from across the world. Winners, who each received 10,000€, were chosen by a group of the “who’s who” of international design such as Philip Battin, Giulio Capellini, Cristina Gabetti, and many others. The competition was divided into the following categories—design, home textiles, packaging solutions, and conscious innovation projects. The 2019 winners were as follows: German designer, Alexander Schul won the design category for creating a chair, lamp and side table all from recycled plastic. He focused on efficient production methods making it easy for it to be manufactured on a large scale. Contestants from Reform Studio, Henry Riad and Mariam Hazem won the home textiles category. They reused plastic bags to create a colorful line of textiles. Dutch designer, Dave Hakkens won the innovation projects
category with his initiative to create Precious Plastic. The Precious Plastic initiative is a series of practical recycling machines that can be built by anyone. They also produced tutorials that would guide the viewers on how to construct the machines, as well as how to utilize them. Unfortunately, no prize was awarded for the packaging solutions category, however, the category will re-launch for GUILTLESSPLASTIC 2020. Rossana Orlandi raved at the success and innovation of the 2019 winners. We await the 2020 Ro Plastic Prize competition, which will return to Milan Design Week in April 2020. Rossana Orlandi’s impact on the design world, and now the environment, creates a new standard for newcomers abroad. She has revolutionized what we know as Design. Rossana Orlandi has taught us to use our gift to impact change in our world. Full of life in her older age, she reigns as the queen of gallerists, inspiring young designers everywhere to fulfill their dreams and open doors for others. Going green has never looked so beautiful and we have Rossana Orlandi to thank for that! Let’s keep our beautiful earth as pure as possible by recycling and conserving waste!

STUDIO AMV’S START OF SOMETHING SENSATIONAL words by: Michele Micciche
Intrigued, fascinated, impressed, whatever you want to call it—we are outright blown away by the women behind the curtain of Studio AMV. The Frenchbased architecture and design firm’s founders (and initials behind the name) Anna Philippou, Marie Prosperi, and Victoire Guerlay possess a tenacity that we simply had to explore further, and we are fairly certain you will find them just as inspiring as we do. At Love Happens we love everything Balmain, so when our publisher KOKET’s Geisha chair appeared in Balmain’s newly opened Paris flagship store for the brand’s Haute Couture Spring Summer 2019 runway show, we had to find out who put it there. After a little research, we soon learned Studio AMV designed the store so we reached out. It turns out the KOKET chair was placed by Balmain’s team for the event, but what a pleasure it was to connect with the three exceptionally talented young powerhouse women behind Studio AMV. Smitten, we had to learn all we could about them so we scheduled a chat. Like any great partnership, balance and compatibility are key, and we were quick to learn that Studio AMV’s founders had this down. The three had completely different entrees into architecture. Anna was born into an architectural family, Marie became an architect by accident, and Victoire grew up dreaming of building bridges. The trio, who first met while working for the amazingly talented French architect Jean Nouvel, was seemingly destined to join forces.

Like all architects, the desire to express their personal visions eventually came to the surface leading to their decision to leave Atelier Jean Nouvel and start Studio AMV. “We met in a timing where we had the same desire, to stand on our own feet. When the opportunity came to the table we just did it!”, they said of the decision. With such different backgrounds, it is truly incredible to watch as the minds of these three beautifully ingenious women have been intertwined in such a way that their architecture displays the complexity of three minds, yet the convergence of one. Their continuity makes perfect sense, “We complement each other. [With] the complementarities we have in experience, profile and character we make a solid team”, they explain of their collaborative approach. Showing tenacity and bravery to take a leap and believe in each other’s, not to mention their own capabilities, is not an easy decision. When we asked them what the most essential thing they learned from Jean Nouvel was, they responded, “There are various architectural responds. Every project is unique, it has an urban context, a function and specifications: architecture is needed as a response to a situation.” Interpreting this concept and applying it through their own lenses while being “inspired by everything that surrounds [them]. It could be nature, cities, cinema, art…” Studio AMV offers a very fresh and inspirational take on the ancient practice that is architecture. Often, what happens at the beginning of a journey is most vital. And how you adapt to opportunities afforded to you can make all the difference in the future. Olivier Rousteing, 54
the artistic director of Balmain, happens to be one of those opportunities for the women of Studio AMV. Introduced by a common friend long before working together, Olivier’s apartment in Paris became the firm’s first project. “It gave us the motivation to keep going”, they explained of the experience. “We did the first phase of the apartment, and the challenge was to make it as quick as possible. We planned the entire décor, and in order to be quick, we fabricated a lot of furniture, because it was quicker than ordering it from shops.” Learning and tailoring their work along the way, Studio AMV took into consideration Olivier’s unique personality and offered up bespoke solutions such as transforming his three different living rooms into one big central living room where he and his guests could gather around. Very happy with his apartment, Olivier called on Studio AMV to design his office at Balmain’s new address. The collaboration just kept growing from there they explained, “At the same time, Balmain was developing their retail strategy and as they saw that we made a good team with Olivier, the proposition [to design their retail stores] came just after.” They had an initial meeting with Balmain where they told us they were directed to “capture the heritage of the Parisian fashion house and recreate a Parisian atmosphere in Balmain stores all around the world. The next weeks we imagined how we could make it happen!” “The concept for Balmain’s stores is preforming “the Parisian art of living” based on what has been characterizing it through out history,” described Studio AMV. It is not a matter of transcribing a Parisian apartment, but about revealing the atmosphere and imagination produced by one. “The concept

ing the importance of interpenetrating exterior and interior spaces, dynamism, and integration with its striking natural surroundings makes it Wright’s biophilic masterpiece.
This hypothesis, known as biophilia, is present in various forms of human expression—case in point, design. It goes beyond an inspiration in fauna or flora and related motifs. Its copious remark is in the design altered in function incorporating natural light, embodying living elements in buildings, and even the impact of said building in its surroundings—agreeable, sustainable, and even participative.
From buildings integrated into nature, we go to nature integrated into buildings—Bosco Verticale, in the heart of urban Milan and designed by Boeri Studio, is home to 900 trees, 5,000 shrubs, and 11,000 floral plants. These buildings are self-sufficient due to the use of solar panels and filtered wastewater to sustain their plant life, while also improving the overall air quality and attracting biodiversity. Besides its overall enhanced footprint, the vegetation also moderates the buildings’ temperature, provides shade and protection from harsh winds, noise pollution, and street-level traffic. It is a living reflection on the change of developing cities to accommodate nature not only trough parks and gardens but in its edifices as well.
f I were to tell you that humans possess an innate tendency to seek connections with nature and other forms of life, you wouldn’t frown upon me. We may argue how, and to what extent, but it is somewhat overall accepted that we look to nature as a way to connect, almost spiritually, with, well, possibly ourselves.
When we think of sustainability, we analyze the human impact on nature; in biophilia, we turn our heads to see the effect it has on us. Opposing to the passé polarization between cities and nature, this concept goes back as far as Babylon, where it was hard to tell where the buildings stopped and the gardens began. Even though it was always somewhat present throughout the history of architecture, it wasn’t necessarily articulated—it just seemed right. Stephen Kellert, one of the pioneers of the voicing and writing of biophilic design, explored the direct and indirect ways to experience nature in architecture—the first, mainly via the incorporation of natural light, air, plants or even animals, and the latter through images, materials or colors that depict our perception of a more natural environment. Taking this to the next level, Timothy Beatley defies us not to limit our vision for a building, but to a city—where urban planning takes into consideration the integration of green elements into people’s lifestyles. As an icon of harmony between humans and nature, Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater house is a tour de force of organic architecture. Its strong Japanese influence emphasiz60
Biophilic design defies the notion that the idea of a city, attached to those of urbanism, evolution, and technology, is a polar opposite of a more natural environment, commonly associated with rural, unsophisticated living. Given the innate need for humans to not only experience nature, but feel part of it, the overall benefits of this concept surpass any lingering drawbacks. As for health, the impact of biophilia is clearly positive with hospitals using “green gymnasiums” to improve patients’ mental health, even increasing pain tolerance, and improving social interactions and physical activity. The use of trees and plants on buildings also improves the edifices’ health, protecting it from wear and weather—and the overall health of Mother Earth enhancing air quality and boosting biodiversity. Literally meaning “love of life or living systems”, biophilia comes into design with a single question—wouldn’t you love to live in a place like this? WWW.LOVEHAPPENSMAG.COM

It wasn’t so long ago that the kitchen huddled at the side of the main floor restricting cooking to a closedoff space—an afterthought in the grand scheme of a home. Fast forward 100 years, the kitchen is now the heart and soul of most homes. A place where friends and family gather daily, the idea of the kitchen has transformed to reflect the changing lifestyles of people today. It is in the kitchen that a house becomes a home. Even in the most luxurious settings, the perfect kitchen brings people together to fuel the mind, body, and soul.

More and more people are focusing on personal well-being, sustainability, and the environment. Thus, these values are being translated into kitchen design. The place where you begin and end your day should be uplifting, beautiful, and promote a healthy lifestyle. For this reason, interior designers put more work and money into the kitchen than any other room. They do this to ensure a setting of serenity, peacefulness, and togetherness that will continue to flow throughout the rest of the house. Love Happens is honoring the importance of kitchens by highlighting some of the most unique and beautiful kitchen designs in the industry in this edition of Tempted by Design. These kitchens embody all the qualities of the perfect modern-day home focusing on a healthy-luxury lifestyle. The designers behind these spaces played with the senses to make each its own one-of-a-kind masterpiece. Livable yet elegant is a hard thing to combine, yet these kitchens embody the two effortlessly. Each design we selected has strong ties to both nature and modern style. Combining the two aesthetics, these kitchens become much more than just places to cook. Open space, strategically placed lighting, and chic style make them the true hub of the home. While each kitchen is unique, they all have a tie to serenity and comfort while still being luxurious and sophisticated.

Erika, CiCi, and Melanie converse over exquisite hor d’oeuvres and top-shelf champagne. Tiny bubbles tickle the bottom of CiCi’s nose as she quickly downs the rest of her first glass of “bubbly”. “Aaah-chuu” CiCi sneezes. Erika looks in CiCi’s direction and shakes her head. “Please sip sweetie, this is champagne not shots of tequila.” Melanie chuckles and then composes herself quickly. “Where is Brandy?” inquires Melanie. “I have no idea, I told her to meet us at 6:30. You know she’s always late.” Erika states as if she was reprimanding Melanie. And then as if almost on cue there appeared sounds of tiny metal bracelets clinking and shaking together in a simultaneous rhythm. Next emerged shiny black and white stilettos, skin tan hosiery, a knee-length waist hugging white dress and large black rim YSL shades. “Heeeeeeey lovely ladies, did you miss me!?” exclaims Brandy before taking her seat. The women exchange glances with each other forcing a smile. “Hey Brandy,” the women mumble in annoyed unison. Brandy removes her glasses and cases the room. “Excellent taste Erika, this place is incredible! 78

She drops to her knees and attempts to dig out the prize with her hands but finds a letter instead. It reads, “I don’t know what I’ll do without you. You have always been by my side. You’re like my second companion, always making me smile. But being ever so stubborn I must leave you behind.” Love Victoria.
Brandy looking confused and amazed at the same time mumbles to herself, “Have I lost my touch.” Erika shakes her head in affirmation. “See Brandy, this really is a great thing. A winwin. Your purchase is environmentally friendly, helping to reduce waste while sporting the most fabulous vintage items ever.” Brandy hesitates. “Well….I guess it wouldn’t hurt to try.” Erika raises her glass. “Let’s toast to the green life.” The women raise their glasses in unison and lightly tap each other’s glass. “Hmmm…vintage shopping huh…well, I guess I’m just going to have to check out this Vestiaire Collective”, Brandy mumbles to herself while checking her phone. And then it happened. Time stood still. Brandy started hearing beautiful island music; it was the beating of bongos with sultry jazz tones that seemed to mimic the rhythm of her heart.
A soft breeze blew through her hair and a light sprinkle mist graced her face from the not too distant waves of the ocean. “Am I in paradise?” whispers Brandy. Confused but intrigued, she takes a step forward realizing her feet are partially submerged in warm grains of sand. After fiddling her toes, she proceeds towards the pristine body of water but not before falling face-first into the warm sand. Coughing and spitting out the sand that had made its way into her mouth, Brandy shouts “Ugh, how the hell did I end up on the ground?” She then began to hear the faint sound of a light beeping noise. “What is that?” “Oh my God, don’t let this be how I die…please don’t tell me I triggered some sort of land mine!” Brandy panics. In a calm but shaky voice, she tries to reassure herself that she’s ok. “Brandy, that may not be the most reasonable explanation for this.” Then she realizes some sort of a strap is looped around her right ankle. She sits all the way up and brings her knees towards her face. She notices that the
“Sucks for her, that man never got the letter” Brandy scoffs as she proceeds to dig and pull again only becoming more restless and aggravated. “Please mother earth grant me this wish and I promise I’ll practice green living.” Brandy gives one final attempt standing and pulling until the backside of her body is a 30-degree angle from the ground. Suddenly Brandy begins flying backward at a high speed with miscellaneous items flying in the air and gravity placing them around her body like she has made a sand angel, including a tiny alarm that was now silenced. I did it! Brandy exclaims. She had managed to free the hidden treasure but now didn’t know where it was. Frantically she turns her head left to right and right to left and there it was! The sun found it before she did. Sitting 15 yards away under the sun rays is the most breathtaking thing she has ever seen. A bright amethyst handbag with a lengthy checker design embroidered in golden lace. Brandy was stunned. In all her years of luxurious shopping, she had never come across such a gem as this. “Ok honey, come to mama”….“you’re almost too pretty to use!” Brandy flips the bag upside down shaking out the remaining sand inside the bag, and then notices a name sewn into the bottom. “V Romano?” “Who is V. Romano……..?”

“Brandy!” “Brandy!” “Brannnn-dddyyyy!” exclaims Cici. Dazed and confused Brandy slowly turns toward Cici. “Huh?” The table erupts with laughter. “You’ve been talking to yourself ever since you looked up that website.” Erika teases. “Yea we thought we were gonna have to pinch you” adds Melanie. “Yes, no more alcohol for Ms. Brandy,” says Cici while raising her glass. “Yea, maybe so….cause I’m not sure what just happened…it was like a daydream but……but….” Brandy tries to collect her thoughts. “Look Brandy just tell us what you found that has you so mesmerized,” Erika impatiently interrupts.“Well, take a look for yourselves,” states Brandy. She turns her phone to face them and for the first time all night complete silence. The women gazed upon the amethyst bag as if it was luring them all to come closer. “Who’s the designer?” “I need to know the designer,” Melanie pesters. “Right,” Erika and Cici affirm in unison. “Well, the website says it’s from the Marco Cancio collection,” says Brandy. “Hmm, never heard of that collection?” “What about you guys?” asks Melanie. “Beats me,” adds Erika. Cici begins feverishly searching through her phone. “Got it!” “Marco Cancio has the most innovative collection of handbags Calabria, Italy has ever seen! It says he dedicated his last designs to his late wife by stitching her name in the bottom of his bags.” “She was supposed to design his last line of bags, but tragically fell ill vacationing on Pete’s Island.” Brandy hesitates then begins slowly speaking while keeping her eyes glued to the picture of the bag. “What was her name”? “Umm, it says his last collection was all stitched with the name V. Romano, but her name was Victoria,” replies Cici. Brandy’s face turns a pale ghostly color. “Brandy, are you ok?” asks Melanie. Nervously fidgeting her hands, Brandy slowly gets up from the table. “He-e-e-y guys….I’m-a…I’m-a have to catch up with you later. She throws a fifty on the table and quickly heads out the door.
Melanie stands up. “Well on that note—we should probably head out because I know all of us have to be up early tomorrow.” “You are right.”…..“Oh wait, it looks like Brandy left something behind again.” says Erika visibly annoyed. She picks up a slightly dusty double folded piece of paper from Brandy’s chair. She opens it. “What is it?” asks Melanie. “I don’t know,” Erika says slowly and confused. “Well, what does it say?” Cici persists. “It says……..“I don’t know what I’ll do without you. “Virginia Stone was built on a foundation of passion, purpose, and an unyielding desire to innovate and inspire – offering uncompromising excellence in sustainable luxury.” – Virginia Stone, Founder The eponymous brand Virginia Stone has smashed the mold and exceeded expectations with the release of their innovative and cutting-edge concept ‘The Tone Factor’. Their coveted, multi-award-winning ‘Eyes’ collection now available internationally, is a feast for the senses. The founder’s disruptive and inspired approach to skincare has turned the industry on its head. As she has stated with conviction. “The skincare industry adheres to a broken and outdated model. The ‘dry/normal/oily’ classification system is incomplete and does not address the differences found within varying skin tones or the need to approach and treat each skin tone independently. The most important factor to consider when designing skincare is tone. Your tone determines your skin personality, which inherently defines unique characteristics like skin density, sensitivity, SPF requirements, and potency tolerance levels.” This unique and innovative approach has been recognized the world over, and the brand, just in its infancy, now carries the title of ‘Best New Sustainable Brand’ as well as ‘Best New Design & Packaging’ with 21+ more international awards and acknowledgments. Eyes is their first release and has garnered rave reviews and shown amazing results. Custom designed and formulated based on skin tone, this avant-garde eye cream is not typical and is as unique as the packaging it is housed in. Lush, decadent, and a powerhouse 3-in-1 concentrate – Eyes is both a moisturizing cream and an antioxidant-rich serum, that offers anti-pollution benefits, natural SPF protection, and perfectly primes the eyes for make-up application.
The first of its kind, Eyes is available in 3 luxe skin tone collections: Kavesi, for fair skin; Jasari for medium skin; and Odaja for dark skin tones. Each carefully crafted formula is housed in a visually stunning stone jar, known as the Luxador, offering natural and exclusive luxury at its finest. The stone Luxador naturally protects the precious active ingredients within the formula, maintains the stability of their rich creams, and prevents UV damage that can compromise the potency and quality of a skincare formula. This is the future of beauty, and Virginia Stone is leading the way as an innovator and disruptor within the space of skincare and the New Luxury. iana Verde Nieto is a woman breaking glass ceilings with her sustainable worldview, so it’s no surprise that her company, Positive Luxury, is a brand that has been groundbreaking in itself. Through awarding their signature Butterfly Mark, Positive Luxury is on a mission to ensure that luxury brands’ products are made sustainably and ecologically.
Inspired by the Large British Blue Butterfly that was saved from extinction, Diana adopted the butterfly symbol as a way to empower consumers. Through transparent ratings of a brand’s ecological effort in the making of their goods and services, consumers can choose which brands they support based on a newfound awareness of a product’s ecological impact. The success of Positive Luxury’s business model and mission statement gives credence to the adage that consumers really can change the world through their pocketbooks. “People have the power to change the world if they vote with their wallet. We provide access to easy understandable information about brands and have a thorough methodology that consumers can trust,” says Diana. But it’s not just Positive Luxury’s mission that is empowering its customer base. Diana’s personal story as it relates to the growth of her business is encouraging and influencing others, especially women, to follow in her footsteps. Diana believes that “the only way to overcome it [gender discrepancies] is to keep going and break the glass ceiling for the generations to come.” Positive Luxury and the creative forces behind its creation are constantly setting the bar higher for businesses as well as consumers. Through its promotion of mindfulness, Positive Luxury is continuing to break barriers and inspire the world to be more intentional and thoughtful with their art. I had the chance to ask Diana a few questions about Positive Luxury and its global impact. We also discussed the challenges that Diana faced in starting her business as a businesswoman with such a grand vision for the future of sustainable luxury goods. She ends with some words of encouragement for those inspired by her efforts and the bearing that Positive Luxury has had on the world of high art.

he purpose of art is not just to create something beautiful. People seek after art because we are drawn to the way it makes us feel like we are a part of something greater than ourselves. The French visual artist Juliette Clovis understands this feeling better than anyone. As a sixteen-year-old girl in Florence, Italy, Juliette gazed upon the marbled sculpture Pietà by Michelangelo and the gilded bronze doors of the Gates of Paradise by Lorenzo Ghiberti. Instantly taken, a year later, she traveled to Paris just to see Rodin’s bronze Gates of Hell, made in response to Ghiberti. After viewing these sculptural masterpieces, Juliette experienced a feeling so intense, she knew that one day she would become an artist. At Love Happens we love sharing stories of empowered women chasing after their dreams. Pursuing her passions and inspiring in others the same grand feeling she felt that day, Juliette Clovis has become our latest obsession.

Living in Bordeaux, France, Juliette creates beautiful porcelain sculptures that take the form of busts, eggs, and hybrid creatures. “My three main sources of inspiration are: art history, mythology, and nature,” says Juliette. A statement that clearly explains why her pieces seem otherworldly as if they were plucked straight from a fairytale. Consider the white bust of her Hermiagus isola creation, for example, a creature with dozens of delicate butterflies perched on its skin. The way their sharp wings rest against the smooth porcelain figure brings attention to Juliette’s love of highlighting contrast. This creature almost appears more butterfly than human, and without Juliette, it would only exist in dreams. Wildlife such as snakes, butterflies, and chrysanthemums manifest repeatedly within her artworks. “Such classical symbols [are] so often used in history of art, but also chosen for representing both life and death,” says Juliette. Throughout the artmaking process, nature plays a central role in exploring these themes. All that exists in nature is tied to this cycle of life—there is constant death and rebirth in the wild. Juliette always knew that she would become an artist. “But this is not so easy to assume when you are seventeen and grow up in a conventional French family,” she said. There-
fore, she started along a more conventional route at first studying law and the history of art at L’Ecole du Louvre in Paris. However, she never forgot that awestruck feeling in Italy as she gazed upon the works of old masters. After working for a while in communications, Juliette made the decision to quit and study graphic design at L’Ecole des Gobelin. We love that she broke away from the status quo and had the courage to return to her first love—art. The rest is history. Beginning with her cutting artworks, a series of layered vinyl portraits, and eventually moving on to porcelain sculptures, comprised of eggs, busts, and hybrid creatures, Juliette is definitely an artist to watch. In 2007, Juliette had her first solo exhibition in a London art gallery. “I was so young… It seems so far away now, and telling this makes me take conscious of how my work has changed these last few years, and how my approach and vision have evolved,” she said. “But this was definitely who I was at this time, as a young self-taught woman beginning with art.” Drawing inspiration from designers like Alexander McQueen and Jean Paul Gaultier, Juliette’s first showcase featured her cutting artworks displaying high fashion portraits of women. For each piece, Juliette hand-cut and superimposed several layers of vinyl onto plexiglass, a process which took tens to hundreds of hours to complete. She spent ten years of her life perfecting this labor-intense technique, however, she no longer practices it since falling in love with porcelain. Juliette focuses on female identity and the representation of women in modern society in much of her work. Her cutting artworks were referential pieces, inspired by feminine figures within the history of art, mythology, and nature. It follows that women remain a central theme within her porcelain artwork as well. Her hybridized porcelain creatures, with flora and fauna elements invading the human figure, not only push forward authorship of women’s representation in art, but also explore the relationship between humanity and nature, the cycle of life and death, and balance brought through contrast. This delicate line between creation and destruction is where Juliette chooses to dance, thriving with her thought-provoking pieces. Her works are engaging not only in the way they evoke these concepts but also in the way they cause the audience to question the sustainability of life overall. A piece titled Platycerium functions as the perfect example to highlight the themes she often repeats in her work.
92
very hard to answer this question because, in art, you have three types of time,” she said. First, there is a time of reflection and inspiration. This is the intellectual part of the process, where she cultivates the idea that she wants to bring to life. Second, there is a time of creation. This is where Juliette draws drafts of the sculptural model, beginning to shape her imaginings and daydreams into a three-dimensional realm. Finally, there is a time of execution. Having decided what she wants to produce, she realizes it into existence. Ultimately, she responded, “I can’t really answer this question.” However, to give a better idea of the time and dedication required for her process, let it be known that merely the execution period of Manis Tétradactyla took four months.
Created especially for “Gaïa Reborn; a future utopia,” an exhibition at Berlin’s URBAN NATION Museum in 2019, the piece takes its name from a special type of fern. Playcerium grande, Platycerium bifurcatum, Platycerium coronarium—all ferns within the Platycerium genus—are known for their uniquely-shaped fronds mimicking a staghorn. It is a playful name, for this porcelain bust displays several hornlike growths sprouting in delicate curves above its head. Within this piece, humanity and nature coexist in a fraught, tense relationship. “Flora elements like flowers and ferns totally invade the human face of my bust, as if it is going to kill the body. But actually, human and nature are muting together to create a new hybrid living being, living in symbiosis.” Through this piece, Juliette captures a wild beauty.
Exhibited May 2019, during the biennial Révélations at the Grand Palais, Manis Tetradactyla is a writhing mass of scales, like the coiled head of Medusa lying in wait. “[It is] the biggest and most challenging artwork I have ever made,” Juliette said. It is comprised of seven-thousand white porcelain scales, all handmade. Some scales are made with enamel, some with biscuit, but all are different sizes to create the sensation of several coiled snakes lying in wait. Her mastery of the medium is evident in the way she perfectly captures movement in this piece. “Other hybrid creatures even larger, in sculpture forms, but also installations, are in progress and will come soon,” says Juliette. At Love Happens, we definitely cannot wait to see all of Juliette Clovis’s future creations.
Juliette has been curating a thoughtful approach to her porcelain artmaking process for several years, and one of her most recent creations, Manis Tétradactyla, is not only set apart from her other pieces by its huge size, but also by her new approach to this process. In contemplating the piece’s continuity within her last few years of work, Juliette told us that “this sculpture marks a new step.” Seeing the magnitude of Manis Tétradactyla and the extensive detailing in each of her creations, we asked Juliette how long it takes her to create her porcelain sculptures. “It is always

Emanuela Crotti’s Poetic Diary words by Alexa Jennelle
Perhaps you’ve heard the phrase, “there’s nothing new under the sun,” an expression often used to reflect on the repetitive nature of our planet and its’ creation. The author of these words keenly observed that life on earth has and will behave as it has always done. The wind will blow to the south and around to the north then back again. The rivers will flow into the sea yet not overflow its’ reservoirs, pushing the water back to whence it came, thus perpetuating the cycle. Life on earth is destined to repeat itself which raises the questions: what does innovation mean? The word innovation is provoking when set against this phrase, forcing us to reflect on the essence of what it truly means, particularly within the realm of art.
layers of resin, she creates dynamic and three-dimensional pieces of décor for the home. Avant-garde yet functional, her designs somehow manage to straddle the line between high art and practicality. Emanuela describes her work as a “poetic diary”. “It’s the perfect title to tell about my work, which is a collage of a multitude of things, very different from each other, but held together by that very fine thread made of sensitivity and harmony.”
“I like to give new life to objects that have already had one of their own”
Emanuela Crotti is an Italian artist whose works of art seem to satisfy the question over the true nature of innovation. Using hundreds of intricate objects held together by thick

When asked how she chooses the components of her creations she replied, “I like to give new life to objects that have already had one of their own, because mixed with the others, they give life to something other than themselves. That’s why I use in my pieces precious things that are close to common or recycled things: medicines, valuables, sweets, sacred hearts, provocations, members, souvenirs or things found in the most impossible places.” Emanuela describes herself as an alchemist of sorts.

“I buy or take from nature everything that strikes my imagination,” she says. “It becomes poetry in which is the new creation, something that was not there before.” Listening to Emanuela describe her artistic process makes it clear that innovation, to make changes to what is already established, is at the core of her designs, making her a truly innovative artist.
I buy or take from nature everything that strikes my imagination. It becomes poetry in which is the new creation, something that was not there before.
Emanuela was born with an inherent love of nature and, as she describes, “artistic blood”. “Since I was a little girl, I loved to contemplate nature: plants, flowers, animals, the sky, colors, etc. I lost myself watching inside flowers, how they were made and the insects that had these flowers like their home.” Emanuela started painting at the beginning of her career, however, she didn’t sense that painting was a true reflection of her artistic expression. And then breast cancer struck. “The disease arrived like a warning to communicate an inconvenience, to make me understand that I would [have] to fully utilize my talents without all those fears that were [holding] me back. It was time to bloom or die! I am a spiritual researcher, but after the illness I worked even more on myself, to be able to dissolve all the defensive layers that were [stopping] me from expressing myself in total freedom.” Through this process of deep self-discovery, Emanuela developed her authentic self as an artist, healing her mind, body, and soul. While nature has always played a role in Emanuela’s art, in her 2019 collection she managed to really tap into her childlike wonder, launching a compilation of unique pieces, inspired and co-created with nature. All of the pieces in this collection are striking, from a dining table designed to replicate a coral reef to a cabinet faced in an enchanting three-dimensional forest. “The collection ‘A Natural Question’ that I presented this year in the Rossana Orlandi Gallery, tells us about the Coral Reef, a place that needs to be protected and loved, about woods where you can walk to regenerate and contemplate extraordinary forms of insects and butterflies, about the beauty of each leaf, of the mushrooms and flowers to nourish our spiritual part.”
sumerist society.” Emanuela’s designs draw us back to our primordial selves, as co-inhabitants of nature, grounding us to that stable and persistent force of the earth. Art being a sanctuary is a theme throughout Emanuela’s work. Not only does she design pieces for the home, but she also strives for her artwork to continue to inspire within the home. “I am happy when a piece of mine is bought and continues living in some house around the world. It touches me to see amazement and emotion in the eyes of those who are contemplating one of my pieces. This is my purpose, my service on this earth: creating, spreading beauty, serenity, and joy, emphasizing the beauty of nature, enhancing shapes and colors, forcing people to stop and contemplate, but also to reflect.” The idea of art to Emanuela is intricately linked to the idea of refuge. Home is a place where one should be surrounded by beauty and in connection to the deeper meanings which art inspires. It’s artists like Emanuela that facilitate that connection. The role of the artist, as seen through Emanuela, inspires through creation, almost standing in defiance to the phrase, “there’s nothing new under the sun.” In a world that will never completely satiate us, art is offered as a remedy. Inherently innovative, art connects us to something deeper and gives new meaning to the redundancies of life. As Emanuela reminds us, art is spiritual, creative, and alchemical. It is the role of artists like Emanuela to remind us that something new can always be formed from that which stays the same.
Emanuela’s collection is a nod to the environmental movement reminding us of the importance of connecting with our natural surroundings and our roles as stewards of the earth. “Mother Nature, the great teacher who has always inspired artists, poets, and scientists, always leaves us openmouthed, with an open heart. I am increasingly convinced that this is the only antidote to the barbarism that the world is going through, where violence and aggression are constantly offered to us by the media, social media and con96

INNOVATIVE ART Joana Vasconcelos words by Sara Almeida
As you hopefully know by now, one of our magazine’s most important missions is to explore all things beautiful and to empower women all over the world. So let us introduce to you Joana Vasconcelos and her work, an exquisite Portuguese artist with a unique view of the world and society, one like you have never experienced before. Born in Paris in 1971, daughter of Portuguese political exiles, it was in her early years as a child that Joana first got in touch with the world of art not only as an admirer but as an educational path choice. It all started in Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, where the family moved to when she was just three years old, and where she lives and works still today. Twenty-five years and dozens of extraordinary works of art later we can fairly confidently say Joana Vasconcelos is one of the greatest artists of her time. The international recognition of her work began in 2005 with a very controversial piece called “A Noiva” (The Bride) [2001-2005] exhibited in Italy at La Biennale di Venezia. From a distance, a majestic chandelier exhibiting a sequenced cascade of amazing brilliant pendants, which once you get closer you realize are simply women’s tampons. At 20ft high and made with approximately 14,000 OB’s, this expansive work is a strong criticism and exposure of a repressed and hypocritical imposition by soci98
Lilicoptère, 2012 Bell 47 helicopter, ostrich feathers, Swarovski crystals, gold leaf, industrial paint, dyed leather upholstery embossed with fine gold, Arraiolos rugs, walnut wood, woodgrain painting, passementerie. 300 x 274 x 1265 cm This is the “pièce de résistance” of Joana Vasconcelos’ work. The delicacy and elegance of beautiful pink feathers carefully applied one by one on the rough structure of a Bell 47 helicopter covered with gold leaf and crystals. In this piece, the artist explores several traditional Portuguese arts and crafts such as the Arraiolos rugs placed inside the helicopter, often used in cars, the woodgrain painting and the sumptuous embroidered upholstery featuring Marie Antoinette’s initials. From a different perspective, the viewer can also appreciate the underlying homage to the real inspirations behind mankind’s ambition to fly—animals with wings and feathers- and the future meets the past.
ety on feminine sexuality from the point of view of the artist.
The more we look at this piece the more messages we seem to interpret. For the most innocent eye it would seem Solitário is simply a symbol of love and commitment represented here as a giant engagement ring. Conversely, if you look closely you could easily spot two of the seven sins: gluttony and lust. For the artist however, this piece presents two of the most stereotyped symbols of a female and male desire—diamonds and luxury cars—also provoking the viewer to reflect on social consumption.
By exploring scale, color, and non-traditional materials, as well as performance and video, Joana Vasconcelos defies established contemporary notions or programmed daily routines offering an intimate yet critical vision of our contemporary society. Especially issues that concern female status, class differentiation, or national identity. Joana Vasconcelos is all this and so much more. She rejects labels and yet is capable of communicating, inspiring and even entertaining spectators from all over the world and different cultural backgrounds. She accepts nothing less than grandeur, she is not afraid to speak her mind while at the same time explores traditional ancient Portuguese arts and crafts through her astonishing artistic creations. And perhaps it was this care and love for Portuguese traditions allied with out-of-thisworld interpretations of such pertinent contemporary issues that gave her her greatest achievement of all time so far: to be the first woman and youngest artist to exhibit at Versailles Palace in 2012 – which became the most visited exhibition in Paris in the last 50 years, welcoming over 1.6 million people. And this is why Joana Vasconcelos’ work has a special place in our “Love Happens” world, and why we are so thrilled to share her with you!
Solitário (Solitaire), 2018 18’’ light alloy golden wheel rims, crystal whisky glasses, metallized and thermo-lacquered iron, stainless steel, tempered and laminated glass. 720 x 604 x 209 cm
Coração Independente Dourado (Golden Independent Heart), 2004 Translucid plastic cutlery, painted iron, metal chain, motor, power supply unit, sound installation 385 x 225 x 50 cm One of Joana Vasconcelos most famous works, this piece beautifully portrays the “portugality” concept she loves to explore. From ordinary plastic cutlery to the most beautiful Coração de Viana (heart of Viana)—an an iconic piece of traditional Portuguese filigree—Joana exposes here the artificiality of the fragile boundaries that separate luxury and banality. Museu Coleção Berardo, Lisbon
I’ll Be Your Mirror, 2018 Bronze, mirrors 356 x 682 x 537 cm The title of this piece is taken from the homonymous song written by Lou Reed and interpreted by the Velvet Underground & Nico, and perhaps one of Joana’s most unpretentious works of all: it intends to induce the viewer to reflect, like a mirror, on ones true “self”.
