Celebrating a Decade of Local Love with the 10th Edition of the Love Local Field Guide!

Welcome to the Love Local Field Guide, where Cape Cod's vibrant community of makers, growers, and business owners shine bright! As we mark the milestone of our 10th edition, we reflect on the journey that began in 2015 when we first introduced the Cape Made Field Guide, later evolving into the Love Local Field Guide. Our mission then, as it remains today, was to create a platform that amplifies the stories of Cape Cod's local gems, serving as a beacon that guides both locals and visitors to the heart of our community.

In 2020, our evolution into a nonprofit organization only deepened our commitment to this mission. The Love Local Field Guide is more than just a publication; it's a testament to the spirit of Cape Cod. Within these pages, you'll discover the richness of our local culture, from the charming downtowns to the breathtaking seascapes. Use our town guides and business listings to craft your perfect day on the Cape, and dive into our editorials that underscore the importance of supporting local businesses for the future of our beloved community.

As you explore this edition, we invite you to celebrate Cape Cod in all its glory. Every business featured not only supports our work but also embodies the essence of our community. They are the lifeblood of Cape Cod, and their success is intertwined with the vitality and sustainability of this place we proudly call home.

Join us in honoring Cape Cod and all those who contribute to its unique charm. Let's continue to choose local first, supporting the businesses that make our community thrive. Thank you for being a part of this journey with us.

Locally yours,

OUR MISSION

LOCAL MATTERS THE GET IT FACTOR

When people talk about shopping with corporate retailers, third party apps or big box stores they often point to the “convenience factor” – you can do business with them from the comfort of your home or on your phone. It’s done quickly, anonymously and delivered right to your door. It’s true that engaged person to person transactions are always better for enhanced personal well-being (and for the most part ensuring your transactions are met with fewer hiccups).

But let’s face it, there are conveniences we’ve all gotten used to. Unfortunately, many consumers assume local businesses don’t offer the types of service that make purchasing goods and services easier. But in many cases, this is just untrue. Local businesses can and have adapted to the changing world of doing business, offering convenient online services, and there are many examples we can point to right here on Cape Cod.

Many retailers throughout the region have online shops that aim to get you your purchases in 1-2 days, making shopping locally super easy any time of day. Whether you're looking for basic necessities like a shampoo bar from Atlantic Soap Company, pet supplies from Agway to new pillows from Sonoma Wool Company or something a little more indulgent like designer shoes from Changing Tides Consignment, a summer dress from the sizeinclusive boutique Ashley Irene, a special occasion shirt from Anchor 2 Anchor or personalized accessories from Nautically Northern, our local businesses have you covered.

Many local eateries are also still allowing customers to order food on the go. If you are in the mood for something plant based (or a pup cup!) from J Bar Juice Bar or need a big juicy burger from Mom & Pops Burgers you can easily place your order online for easy pickup. You can pre-order Midnight Our's catch of fresh scallops online and pick up at various locations across the Cape , or order a birthday cake or croissants for a morning meeting from The Chocolate Rose right on their website. And if your sweet tooth comes calling, skip the stop altogether and order Kayak Cookies online to have them delivered right to your doorstep.

There’s more convenience to be had when shopping locally, beyond the basic online shopping experience.

October Gulls offers a personal shopping experience whether you can get there in person or not. If not, you can Facetime or Zoom with staff at a time that works for you, and they will be your “gift concierge” making sure your purchase is wrapped and ready for pick up, shipping or local delivery.

Town Taxi of Cape Cod has their own app you can download. You enter your destination, and the app tells you who is coming to pick you up and how long it is going to take - works just like corporate apps like Uber and Lyft.

Not only can you order all of your photo prints with Orleans Camera on their website, but you can also scrap the corporate apps when it comes to capturing memories in your own photo book; you can create those with your digital images right from your kitchen table and have it shipped directly to you.

Forget going to a big box store for your dinner drinks, Cape Cod Package Store not only offers online ordering of their inventory, but you can also choose to access their delivery option Tuesday through Saturday. And there’s no need to order a coffee subscription box from Amazon, sign up online for Snowy Owl Coffee’s Hoot Club for a monthly delivery of your favorite roast.

Like large grocery chains, Friends Marketplace has the capability to let you shop and order online for easy curbside pickup. And you don’t have to order something for a local loved one from Edible Arrangements or 1-800-Flowers. Ring Brothers offers online ordering and delivery of their gift baskets and Botanique also has easy and seamless online ordering and delivery of their gorgeous bouquets.

It's time to check your assumptions at the bridge. Just like large corporations, local businesses can and do offer the “convenience factor.” The main difference between corporate service and that of our locals is that the money spent directly with local businesses stays right here on Cape Cod and is reinvested in our community, when dollars spent with national entities just aren’t.

YOUR COMMUNITY IMPACT CHECKLIST

CHOOSE LOCAL

In a global economy dominated by corporations, big-box stores and online giants, the heart of the Cape Cod community lies in its local businesses. Here are some tips to help you make a meaningful impact right in your neighborhood.

To choose local is to buy your goods and services from a local business - one headquartered on Cape Cod - instead of going to a large corporate retailer.

Thinking local first is about progress not perfection. When you are making any purchasing decisions, do your best to try and find a local business that can provide the product or service for you.

If your first thought is you won’t be able to find what you’re looking for locally, think again. We’ve got over 8,000 small businesses on Cape Cod, one of them is bound to have what you need!

Stay off the third-party apps or platforms like Amazon, GrubHub or Etsy, if you can. It’s best for the small business if you buy directly from them, since those services take a chunk of every sale.

Working with local businesses does not necessarily cost more. In most cases, local goods are priced competitively with those offered by large corporations - the key to low prices in the long term is a competitive marketplace filled with lots of thriving businesses.

Shopping locally can actually save you money because you often avoid making the frivolous purchases that you never get around to returning or those you bought on an impulse click.

It is a good thing to have a healthy skepticism of the intentions of big businesses – their sole focus is their bottom line and their shareholders’ returns - and not whether they are adding value to our communities.

When you have truly exhausted your shopping options on Cape Cod, the next best option is to go with a company that at least employs people on Cape Cod.

CHOOS E LOCAL

BOURNE spans both sides of the Cape Cod Canal and has much to offer on both sides of our iconic bridges.

Begin exploring Buzzards Bay on Main Street with a smoothie from Vela Juice Bar or the Blended Berry, or tuck in for a meal at Mezza Luna, Krua Thai, or Stomping Grounds Grille. For a 21+ sip with your grub, try Rod & Rail gastropub or Mahoney’s on Main. Don’t forget dessert at Betty Ann’s Dairy Freeze, Mic’s Main Scoop, or the Old Country Store & Emporium, which has a classic 25-cent candy counter.

Next, head over to the National Marine Life Center to learn about their rehabbed marine animals or go for a stroll under the Railroad Bridge at Buzzards Bay Park. Rent a bike from Buzzards Bay Bikes or Canal Cruisers and cruise down the Cape Cod Canal bike path to feel the coastal breeze in your hair.

On the other side of the bridge, travel to Pocasset via Shore Road to check out the Museums at Aptucxet and gear up for a day under the sun. Stop at Gray Gables Market for provisions on your way to Little Bay Walking Trails and take in the picturesque views at Monk’s Park. When the weather is right, plan a day of surf and sand at Monument Beach or Barlow’s Landing, go on a Cape Cod Canal Cruise or set sail from Red Brook Harbor. Power up at Cataumet’s Daily Brew, meander through the Village Trading Company for local gifts, or lap up some much deserved soft serve over a round of mini golf at Cataumet Light.

For al fresco dining, make your way to the Lobster Trap or Courtyard, or keep it casual at Chart Room or Parrot Bar & Grill. Bar room pizza awaits at Trading Post Lounge, a local favorite. Indulge your sweet tooth with pastries from Becky’s Bakery and or a cold dairy delight from Whistle Stop Ice Cream Shop

SANDWICH may be Cape Cod’s oldest incorporated town, but remains young at heart, and as lively as ever.

Park the car and mosey through charming and historic downtown for galleries, shops and eateries galore. Try Next Door Burger Bar for beefy bites, upscale dining in a refurbished church at the Belfry Inn & Bistro, or shop and chomp at both the Brown Jug and Lo Adoro Italian Market. Next, browse Modern Vintage, Cerulean, the Spotted Cod, Salty Girl Studios, Jarves & Main and Collections Gallery for all your retail needs.

Immerse yourself in history and nature at Mill Creek Herring Run to see fish migrating up the creek in spring, or the Dexter Grist Mill, which dates back to 1654, stop for a spot of tea at the Dunbar Tea Room, coffee and empanada from Snowy Owl, or cake and other baked treats from Beth's Bakery.

Heritage Museum and Gardens, is known for seasonal events, expertly manicured gardens, collection of vintage cars, and The Adventure Park, where you can scale trees and zipline with friends. The Sandwich Glass Museum is also worth a visit, showcasing the town's history as a center of glass production.

Pop over to Merchants Square for grub and good times at Off The Grid, classic sammies and salads at Cafe Chew and The Deli, and an old world wine for later at Cellar 55. Wish Gift Co. has expertly curated gift boxes, while Sundance Clothing has seasonal wardrobe staples.

Get out in the sun with a ride along the Canal Bike Path or kayak with Rideaway Adventures. Fisherman's View and Pilot House have classic waterfront dining, while Ice Cream Sandwich and Shipwreck Ice Cream have the cold dairy treats of your dreams.

Drive along historic Route 6A to see the area's scenic beauty, hike or paddle at Scorton Creek and visit the Green Briar Nature Center. In the summertime, spend a day at Town Neck Beach, visit Crow Farm for apple picking in the fall, or take a pony ride at Meeting House Farm and Sanctuary. Shoppers, get lost in Titcomb's Bookshop (and toy store), Artisan House Gallery, Diesel & Lulu and Painted Daisies

EXPLORING THE UPPER CAPE

FALMOUTH, where locals seldom leave, and visitors wish they took the beach route in.

Explore the Cape’s second largest town beginning in North Falmouth, making your way south while stopping at October Gulls, Blooming Resale, the Old Main Mercantile, North Falmouth Cheese Shop, Eulinda's, or West Falmouth Market. Alternatively, start in East Falmouth with an early breakfast at Moonakis Cafe before visiting the Cape Cod Cape Verdean Museum. Then awaken your taste buds with locally cultivated bevs at Cape Cod Winery or Bad Martha Farmer's Brewery.

Take the beach route into town, and stop by Shipwrecked and Falmouth Heights Beach to slip your toes in the sand. Aquatic Brewing, Tiger Ramen or Betsy's Diner are perfect for afternoon bites.

Main Street in downtown Falmouth calls for shopping. For apparel, pop into Story., Green Eyed Daisy and Gaia or Maxwell & Co. Stop by Eight Cousins Bookstore, Celebrations, and Gilded Oyster for unique gifts. The Quarterdeck Restaurant and Devour will hit the spot for lunch and Ghelfi’s Candies & Ice Cream and Bob and Bill’s Chocolate Emporium are perfect for sweets. For a slice of culture, visit Highfield Hall and Museums on the Green, and learn about feminist history at the Katherine Lee Bates House. Dinner at Osteria La Civetta, Bluefins, The Glass Onion or Shiverick Cafe & Bar are just the ticket before a stirring performance at Cape Symphony’s Falmouth Campus. Off Main Street, find a meal with a view at Falmouth Raw Bar or The Flying Bridge

MASHPEE is home to the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe as well as one of the Cape’s most dynamic shopping destinations.

Experience the Mashpee Wampanoag Indian Museum and dig into the Mashpee Archives to explore historical documents and artifacts from Mashpee's past. Next, head to the Mashpee National Wildlife Refuge or the Mashpee River Woodlands for a scenic stroll with views of the Mashpee River. Popponesset Bay and Mashpee Neck offer picturesque views of the bay and coastline as well. Rainy days with the littles call for an afternoon at the Cape Cod Children’s Museum.

Begin your shopping adventure at Mashpee Commons, a vibrant outdoor shopping and dining destination. Pick up something for your furry kiddos at Hot Diggity, then Fox + Kit or Red Balloon Toy Shop for the two-legged tykes. For clothing, visit Ashley Irene Boutique, Day Off, Port Cargo and Coastal Brahmin. Bust out your readers at Market Street Bookshop, or shop local artists’ creations at the Art Coddage and the Wampanoag Trading Post & Gallery. Treat yourself with locally themed polish colors for your claws at Cape Cod Nail Co, or get physical Upside Down Escapes or The Lanes Bowl & Bistro

Enjoy the stunning scenery of Woods Hole with a leisurely hike at the Knob and Spohr Gardens, or rent a bike at Corner Cycle and pedal along the Shining Sea Bikeway. Refuel at Quick's Hole Taqueria, Coffee Obsession, Pie in the Sky or Candy Go Nuts. Finish up at Shuckers, Leeside Pub, and Captain Kidd, ideal for waterfront bar-hopping.

For fresh seafood, try Water Street Kitchen or Landfall before walking across Eel Pond Drawbridge. Experience the Woods Hole Film Festival in the summer, and take in the sunset at Chapoquoit Beach, Black Beach, or Old Silver Beach.

Dine to your heart’s delight at Trevi, Bleu, Estia, Asia, Hometown Juice and Mashpee Fresh Market or find food just outside the Commons at Wicked Pizza, Bagel Haven, Polar Cave (vegan options available!), the Chocolate Rose Cafe for extravagant desserts, or Cape Cod Coffee’s roasting facility - the site of many fun public events complete with full bar and coffee inclusive cocktails! If it's vegetarian specialities you crave, try the plant-based Southeast Asian street food at Freshroll. The 21+ crowd now has two Naukabout Brewery locations in Mashpee to host games and lowkey drinks with friends.

When the weather is right, head to South Cape Beach for the sand dunes, ponds and marshes, then cruise down the coast and relax at the Popponesset Inn. Stop at the nearby Popponesset Marketplace for minigolf and Cape-themed gifts at Cranberry Collective or enjoy a classic lobster roll and fresh shellfish at Raw Bar

HARWICH is steeped in Cape Cod’s natural history and local arts and culture.

Harwich Port is the place to be for adorable shops, restaurant hot spots and a classic Cape Cod vibe. Sparkling stones and must-have jewelry can be found at Lexaco and Dune. Pop next door to The Beaded Wire brick and mortar gift shop, and just down the road to Reciprocity, Cape Life Brand, Haberdash, Sativa, The Grey House and Murphy’s General Store for gifts, goodies and apparel. Feast your eyes upon the beautiful work on display at The Nines Gallery, Larkin Gallery and Lutz Gallery to culture-up your day.

Halt tummy grumbles with healthy eats and juices at J Bar, morning brews or afternoon oysters at Perk Coffee Bar + Beer Garden, bomb burgers at Mad Minnow Bar & Kitchen, sushi + cocktails at 3 Monkeys, classic pub grub at Hot Stove Saloon, or Red River BBQ and Ember Coal Fire Pizza for expertly blazed and smoked spreads. For fresh seafood with a view of the harbor, head to Brax Landing. Snag a sammie at Cape Roots Market or a vegan cone from Sweet Izzy’s and enjoy it while overlooking Wychmere Harbor or Red River Beach.

Cruise into Harwich center to find locally sourced creations at FishAye Trading and relish your moment of zen at the Cape Cod Lavender Farm. Learn more about the Cape's signature cranberry crop at the Harwich Historical Society Museum, take a hike at Bell's Neck Conservation Land (look for bald eagles!), swing for the fences at Brook's Park and immerse yourself in the local arts community at The 204: Cultural Arts Municipal Building . After absorbing the local culture, indulge in a 5-star meal at Twenty-Eight Atlantic

Take the rugrats to the Grand Slam Entertainment Center for bumper boats, go-karts, zip lines, and batting cages. If they’ve still got energy to spare, hop over to the Trampoline Park or go on a seal cruise to spot wildlife on Monomoy Island Excursions.

CHATHAM is known for its incredible scenery, quintessential Cape aesthetic and impressive coastal attractions.

Give yourself an entire day to take in all that Chatham has to offer both on and off Main Street. Fuel up for the day at Chatham Cookware, get your hair-of-the-dog at Chatham Squire, catch the island vibes at Aplaya Kitchen + Tiki Bar, crack open fresh seafood at the Impudent Oyster, or share clean local cuisine and fine wine at the new Drifters Cape Cod. Fill your pantry, closet and home with must-haves from Fisherman’s Daughter, Sundance Clothing, Yankee Ingenuity, If The Shoe Fits, The Artful Hand Gallery, Where The Sidewalk Ends, Gustare Gourmet and the Mayflower Shop.

Just out of the thick of it, but still close by, you’ll find more fantastic culinary offerings. Mom & Pops has your messy-in-the-best-way burgers, all-day breakfast or brunch in a vintage-inspired roadside diner at Chatham Filling Station, the freshest seafood on the fly at Mac’s Chatham Fish & Lobster, or Branches Grill for colorful Caribbean fare. Don your sunnies and lunch like Cape Cod royalty on the water at The Beach House at Chatham Bars Inn, or be casual at Chatham Pier Fish Market with lobster rolls you can enjoy while watching the seals play beneath the pier. Aerophiles will love Hangar B at the Chatham Airport where you can watch small planes take flight over lunch. If the weather is right, take off on a sightseeing ride with Stick’n Rudder Aero Tours. Fall in love with local art at Local Color Art Gallery or the Chatham Creative Arts Center. For dinner without the kids, book a babysitter and make a resy at Bluefins, Chatham Cut , Del Mar or Pate’s.

To appreciate the coastline and breathe in the salt air, drive out to Chatham Light, hike the Morris Island Trails at Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge, explore the Forest Beach Conservation Area, watch the daily catch come in at the Chatham Fish Pier, or learn about the Cape’s apex predator at the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy.

See what the cool kids are wearing at Pump House Surf Shop and score nautical gear at Nauset Surf.

The bayside beaches like Breakwater Beach, Paines Creek Beach and Linnell Landing Beach are where you'll catch sight of the infamous Brewster Flats created by the ebbs and flows of the tide, along with some superb sunsets.

Family dinner is at OKI Sushi or The Island Blue Crab, or make it a date night at The Brewster Fish House, Spinnaker or Chillingsworth. If it’s live music and drinks you’re after, check out The Woodshed

Throw one back with live music at Hog Island brewery or The Barley Neck Inn, elevated cuisine and cocktails at Navillus, Cape comfort at Rock Harbor Grill or visit The Knack, the perfect roadside stand. Get your taco fix at Las Chidas, classic Americano at Mahoney’s or The Beacon Room. EXPLORING

THE OUTER CAPE

TRURO offers miles of shoreline, trails and outdoor attractions to explore as well as must-visit local businesses.

The Cape Cod National Seashore takes up more than half of the area, making it easy to find an incredible spot to set up camp on a beach overlooking the Atlantic Ocean on which to spend a few hours relaxing or taking in nature: Ballston Beach, Longnook Beach, Head of the Meadow Beach or High Head Beach. Or go to Corn Hill Beach, Cold Storage Beach, Fisher Beach on the bayside for great views of Provincetown.

For even more exploration of the great outdoors, paddle down the Pamet River and into Pamet Hollow, hike on Pilgrim Spring Trail, or climb up to the Jenny Lind Tower or Bearberry Hill Eastern Summit for some spectacular views. For watering holes without frills, head to The Underground or Old Colony Tap. Stroll down the Bob Gasoi Memorial Art Alley for a trip through the looking glass. The art of drag is celebrated all over town at Porch Bar, A-House, which is several bars in one, Pilgrim House which draws international stars, and local mainstays like The Crown & Anchor, Post Office Cafe, The Art House that don’t disappoint. One of P-Towns traditions for those looking to dance and mingle is Tea Dance at the Boatslip.

The acts at Payomet Performing Arts Center make a drive to the outer Cape well worth it. Before an evening at the PPAC, grab dinner and libations overlooking the ocean at the Top Mast Cafe, homestyle Italian at Montano's, surf and turf with panache Blackfish, or classic Cape cuisine at Captain's Choice Savory & the Sweet Escape remains the perfect place to put your sugar craving to bed with a rich slice of confected heaven.

She is a proud washa-shore, a creative chick, instructor, and holds papercrafting retreats locally and throughout North America. She also teaches papercrafting classes online. Through her website she provides creative inspiration and a variety of crafty items for purchase.

Events, business functions, private parties, weddings, clubs, and festivals - Ian has the skill to make it a special occasion to remember. What separates Ian from the rest is his ability to mix up the right music, host with personality and create a celebratory atmosphere. DJ Ian
