OH BRIDES IDEAS GOLD PLATED

N

othing says opulence like gold. The warmth of this color will compliment any theme and ambiance of your celebration, whether day or night! This luxurious color can be incorporated in flatware, place settings, gold足-rimmed wine glasses, and gold足-foiled stationary to wow your guests this season. While gold is often used as an accent color, dynamic weddings can feature gold as a stand足alone color for an elegant touch.

T

FRONT TO BACK

he front of the wedding gown is the first impression a bride makes on her groom and wedding guests. This season, brides who want to make a lasting impression are sure to focus just as much attention on their decorated backs. Lace, pearls, crystals, and even appliques are used accent the back in unique ways. Designers are learning that the detail on the back of the gown is just as important as the front, and no longer part of the body that will be forgotten.

OH BRIDES IDEAS RAISING THE BAR

T

he modern bride is ‘raising the bar’ with creative and stylish bars to accent their receptions. Tables with a simple black cloth are no longer the popular option, and bars that match the theme of the event are becoming yet another opportunity for brides to showcase their individuality. From ultra modern chrome to kitschy weathered oak, the creative possibilities are endless. With the ability to serve custom drinks, a bar to fit in with your decor is another detail that will not be missed! Not limited to alcohol, bars can be used for soda, juice, ice cream, and many more! This often overlooked space was once an afterthought that can now be a headline feature. People spend much of their time enjoying food and drinks during bridal showers, rehearsal dinners, and receptions, why not give them something to remember?

W

TEA TIME

hile most brides opt for the floor length gown with a moderate to long train, bold brides are opting for tea length gowns that will not compromise their individual styles. This style provides a fresh and youthful alternative to the long gowns. In addition, the shorter hem allows for more movement, which will come in handy on the dance floor. From sleek and fitted to full and flattering, the short gowns have found a place in one of the most fashion forward trends of the season. PHOTO courtesy of AFR Event Furnishings

MAKEUP MASTER CHRISTIAN MCCULLOCH for DOLCE & GABBANA WRITTEN BY JEKAREN TAYLOR

I

n the world of fashion, Australian native Christian McCulloch has worked with Oscar de la Renta, Tory Burch, Donna Karan and Max Mara. Outside of fashion, he is currently a favorite of Emma Stone, Jessica Biel and Hilary Swank. He is most known for dramatic eye makeup (his favorite!) and has the talent to bring visions to fruition with a flare. As Dolce & Gabbana’s new National Makeup Artist, Christian travels to share his passion for Dolce & Gabbana while being able to meet women all over the world with different styles and personalities that he can enhance with the sweep of his magical makeup brush. Christian’s latest genius can be seen in the smoky and seductive campaign for Passion Eyes mascara, featuring Scarlett Johansson. He sat down with us at the Dolce & Gabbana Beauty Temple at Saks Fifth Avenue in Atlanta to discuss the new line of Dolce & Gabbana products, makeup must haves for brides, and his passion for transformation. OB: You are here promoting the new PassionEyes mascara by Dolce & Gabbana. This mascara comes in 3 shades, Nero, Terra, and Blu Indaco How would a bride choose the best color for her? CM: The color is just another way to create dimension. For example, the blue that we do is very deep, so it’s not garish....The different hue options enhance and gives girls that “pretty, feminine, and classic glamor.” OB: What other products do you recommend to use with the PassionEyes mascara? CM: We have a wide range of products that complement the mascara. Our eyeshadows and eyeliners are great companions, and the three color options of mascara allow for greater versatility in eye makeup combinations. Black can fall flat whereas the Terra can better compliment a gold shadow or the Blu Indaco can give your eyes a subtle pop.

16 WINTER/SPRING 2014 | oh-brides.com

OB: Weddings are always an emotional time, what techniques would you recommend for a bride to help avoid makeup mishaps? CM: Waterproof! Waterproof! Waterproof Mascara! Weddings are always emotional, and you don’t want to have your dress or pictures ruined by runny mascara. Go light on the makeup. You will be dancing and sweating, and the last thing you want to worry about is getting makeup all over. Less adds so much more! OB: When using makeup frequently, what type of regime would you recommend to keep skin healthy and fresh? CM: Caring for your skin should be something you focus on long before your ceremony. Each day you should wash your face with a mild cleanser, allow your skin to breathe by taking makeup off each night and exfoliating a couple of times a month. For an extra perk, you can have a facial one month before and again two weeks before the big day. It is really simple to keep your face clean and healthy.

OB: What are some of the popular trends that you see for weddings this season? CM: There isn’t a blanket recommendation for all brides. Their makeup should reflect who they are and the style of their wedding. Classic pinks are always great for fair skin and gold and warm colors look great on darker skin tones for weddings. It is important for the bride to have a clean look that enhances beauty and doesn’t overshadow the details that they have planned so carefully. OB: What do you enjoy the most about being a makeup artist? CM: I love the transformative aspect of makeup. How it makes you look, how it makes you feel. I have the ability to enhance natural features, a skill I cherish. I love to make women the most beautiful versions of themselves. Other tips: CM: Have a trial run of your spray tan done well in advance. You want it to look natural, and if you don’t like it, you have time for it to wear off.

ndrea remembers the first time she was formally introduced to Johnny. They met at a 4th of July cookout of mutual friends. “I was helping out in the kitchen and I noticed this guy who kept finding his way into the kitchen for some reason or another... The host of the party came into the kitchen and asked if we had met before. I had previously seen Johnny at many Tuskegee Alumni functions in the area, so I knew who he was, but we had never spoken to one another. “ “When the cookout was over, everyone went outside to say their “goodbyes”. Johnny asked if I was going out and since I was tired I told him no. He then told me to drive safely and to call him. Well I didn’t have his number, but I’m guessing this was his tactic to see if I was as interested as he was. I must admit that I thought it was pretty smooth . Being the intuitive woman that I am, I looked Johnny up on Facebook and sent him a friend request. He accepted and immediately messaged me with his number. I called and here we are almost 4 1/2 years later.” After dating a little over three years, the two were engaged after a heartfelt proposal by Johnny in front of the Booker T. Washington monument at their alma mater, Tuskegee University. Out of the blue, Johnny told her that she said

something the previous night that didn’t sit well with him. With a concerned look, Andrea asked him to explain. Johnny began to recall being in the store and being introduced to the mother of one of her childhood friends. Andrea, with a really puzzled look on her face, told Johnny that she remembered introducing him and asked if that was a problem or would he rather introduce himself next time? Johnny then said that he didn’t like the fact that she introduced him as her boyfriend. Andrea, at that point, was completely confused and as she started to reply asking what she was supposed to say, Johnny got down on one knee and said, “I want you to call me your husband.” The two were married October 13, 2013, at Biltmore Ballrooms in Atlanta, Georgia. Though the couple reside in Washington D.C. They chose Atlanta as a central location because their families are located in the South. The most memorable moment for Andrea was her “first look” with her soon-to-be husband. She remembers “Johnny had his back turned to me. I walked up slowly to him and tapped him on the shoulder. He turned around and looked at me like I was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen...We were both pushing back tears. We embraced and smiled and were in awe of

one another. It was a great moment!” Dancing to “Teach Me How to Dougie” with her dad was one of the most unexpected moments of the night. She said “I was exiting the dance floor to go have a seat when my dad came up and grabbed me and pulled me to the dance floor! I forgot that he had moves!!! I’m pretty sure he shocked all of my friends! It’s something I will never forget!” Andrea and Johnny completed their celebration with a honeymoon on the island of Grenada.

32 WINTER/SPRING 2014 | oh-brides.com

Chase and Lauren went to Spain for Vacation in October 2012. On their second day in Barcelona, Chase and Lauren planned to go to Montjuic. Chase said that he would take her picture with the fountain behind her. She walked up to pose, and he said he had set his camera up on a timer to take their picture together.” After smiling at the camera for a second, I started to walk back. Chase grabbed my hand and got down on one knee. He told me he loved me and asked me to marry him. And of course, I said “Yes!”. Lauren was surprised again when she found out that he had set up the camera to video the whole proposal.

L

auren Higgins and Chase Topits married on September 14, 2013 at Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church, and honeymooned in Almalfi Coast, Italy. The ‘Team Topits’ moniker refers to the couple’s chance meeting. Lauren remembers “We met playing on a kickball team at Piedmont Park. My roommates and I joined as “free agents” and were placed on a team with Chase and his roommate. After the first game, the team went to the bar, and Chase sat right down next to me. The waitress came by to explain that if we signed up for their Loyalty Rewards Club, we could get coupons throughout the year to use on Birthdays and Anniversaries. All we had to do was fill out a paper with our basic information and important dates so that they would mail us coupons to use. Chase then turned to me and asked me to marry him… so we could pick a fake anniversary date in order to get a coupon to use after kickball. I said yes, on the first day we met. “ Ten kickball seasons later, Chase proposed for real and Lauren could not help but say yes.

Feeling elated from the surprises so far, Lauren was overwhelmed when Chase said he had one more surprise. “We walked a few blocks to our dinner location. As I followed the hostess to our table for dinner, I turned the corner and sitting at our table were Chase’s parents AND my parents! Chase had arranged for them to fly to Barcelona to surprise us for our engagement dinner! “Since we met playing kickball, and are big Braves fans, we decided to enter the reception in a baseball “up to bat song” WINTER/SPRING 2014 | oh-brides.com 33

style. Our parents and the bridal party paired up into couples and each of them came out to the dance floor in different song clips, like they were going up to bat at a baseball game. Each couple had come up with a choreographed dance… from One Directions “Best Song Ever”, to NSYNC’s “Bye, Bye, Bye”. One couple even grabbed a broom and chopsticks to do an impromptu air guitar and drums. After the bridal party was on the dance floor, Chase and I ran through a huge paper sign that said “Team Topits”, like football players do at high school games. Then the Tomahawk Chop started and everyone in the reception hall joined in. It was a great surprise for the guests, and set a fun tone for the evening.”

GRAND ENTRANCE Lauren and Chase ran through a large sign with the banner “Team Topits” and invited their guests to do the Tomohawk Chop to begin the reception officially.

lisha and Ameet first met during a destination wedding in Savannah, Georgia. It was the first weekend in April and Ameet was making his first trip down to Savannah to attend the wedding of his Duke friend, Vivek. At the reception, he was seated next to Alisha and they immediately hit it off. They spent hours hanging out after the reception and the next day Alisha took Ameet on a tour around downtown Savannah before his flight back to New York City. Alisha and Ameet both knew this was the start of something very special. After dating for 6 months, Ameet proposed to Alisha by surprise, a feat that seemed impossible because it was next to impossible to surprise Alisha. However, this time would be different. With the help of Alisha's close friend Smita, Ameet hatched out a plan to propose to Alisha. Alisha knew Ameet was scheduled on a direct evening flight to Savannah, but with only 3 seats available, Ameet was able to take the early afternoon flight. Smita's husband, Mitul, picked Ameet up from the airport, and then drove him downtown to the Bohemian Hotel.

DEREK WINTERMUTE PHOTOGRAPHY

36 WINTER/SPRING 2014 | oh-brides.com

Meanwhile, Ameet also coordinated with Alisha's brother, Amar, to help convince Alisha to come with him downtown to meet a broker. Once downtown, Amar concocted a story that the broker was running late and took Alisha up to the Rocks on the Roof for what was supposed to be a quick drink as they waited. Amar led Alisha to the back where Ameet came around the corner and surprised Alisha. He got down on one knee to propose and she answered with an enthusiastic “Yes!. Alisha and Ameet notified close family and friends before celebrating with local friends that evening.

The couple met with designer Suhaag Garden and they commented on the unique ideas for the 3-day event comprising of a Mehndi, Garba, and Wedding. “When we met with Alisha and Ameet to start planning the vision for their multi-event wedding, they told us they not only wanted something unique, but something never been seen before. So we put aside all of our past designs and started with a blank slate.” “Pink chiffon was softly cinched at the top of each column with fabric winding down. A floral belt comprised of ivory and pink flowers was draped around the front of the Mandap columns. The Mandap’s roof was not spared any details either – the glass crystal chandelier provided a sparkling treat for the eyes. The raised aisle was lined with an endless row of cylinder vases with floating candles inside, and adorned by pink and white rose petals scattered generously between the vases. Tall gold mosaic candelabras, with matching pink hue roses placed inside.” Alisha Patel and Ameet Shah were married on October 17-19, 2013, at the Savannah International Trade & Convention Center. The two honeymooned in Jade Mountain, St. Lucia.

SUIT & TIE

WRITTEN BY KATE DONACHY The Modern Gent | www.themodern-gent.com

n the world of wedding planning, men are often an afterthought. Brides are presented with yards of table linen choices, blooms for days, and enough lovely papers and branding choices to make your head spin. But when it comes to dressing the gentlemen, I can assure you that not all grey suits are created equal and not just any tuxedo is The Tuxedo. With so many options to customize the men's attire the trick is to keep fit's sharply tailored and elegant with the cohesion of the overall theme in mind. Designing a special, unique look- whether rental garments or tailored clothing for purchasealways starts with determining the formality of the big day. Cues here are the bridal gownwhether traditional or contemporary, length of bridesmaids dress, time of ceremony, and of course, the venue! Here's your basic menswear 101 based on your venue: Ballroom Wedding Venue Ballroom weddings will typically trend toward traditional in style. The large rooms and sweeping ceilings for an evening wedding often call for Black Tie formal. You won't go wrong dressing the men in black tuxedo's, black bow or neckties, and a tailored formal shirt. The key for the perfect tuxedo is absolutely down to fit: The coat jacket should rest perfectly aligned with the shoulders, and a high set armhole will offer more tapering through the torso for a modernized look. Skip the boutonniere and add a white linen 40 WINTER/SPRING 2014 | oh-brides.com

pocket square for a masculine touch. This is a look that benefits from a neutral color scheme to keep classy: blacks, whites, and subtle touches of pattern in a tie is a bold as you should go for an updated traditional look. Garden/Vineyard Wedding Designing the look for outdoor weddings can be so much fun. Typically more casual, it's a great way to play with lots of texture. Grey and brown suits play well in a natural setting, and compliment most bridesmaid's gowns. Elements of textural wools or small-scale patterns photograph nicely but remember, the larger the pattern the more casual the suit. Silk ties in muted colors lean romantic and modern while knit ties are in style for a more vintage feel. Subtle elegance is best achieved by a tie a few shades lighter than your suit and a pop of coordinating color in a pocket square. Contemporary Wedding Venue So many fun venues are popping up as an alternative to the more formal ballroom's: repurposed warehouses, funky breweries, art galleries, and museums. This is where a couple with a big personality can really let that shine through in their attire. Charcoal suits work well with elements of the color scheme in graphic patterns for the men's accessories. Groom in a three piece-suit with groomsmen in wool vests with rolled shirt sleeves is a fun, casual option.

For couples desiring a more formal look, this is the perfect setting for creative black tie: a cool black dinner jacket with a charcoal pant and bold pocket square; or a midnight blue tuxedo with black shawl lapels and fun socks always make for great photo ops.

...when it comes to dressing the gentlemen, I can assure you that not all grey suits are created equal...

As anyone who has planned a wedding will know, the last few weeks leading up to the big day are pretty stressful, especially with demanding jobs and other commitments. We had a brilliant wedding day and after that all we were looking for was absolute relaxation and calm and that’s exactly what we experienced at the Grace. From our initial booking of the hotel until check out every dealing we had with all staff there was exemplary.
