discover middlesbrough festival
WELCOME TO 2022
Hello Friends,
Time seems to fly by in between the delivery of Local History Month in May and the Discover Middlesbrough festival launching in October each year. As anchors in the local history events calendar locally the programs are brought to you by a consortium of contributors and coordinated into a program by the wonderful Robert Nichols who works continuously to champion both festivals year-round. I wanted to start by offering my thanks to everyone who’s been involved in pulling the program together this year, I think its one of our best.
Some of the things I’m looking forward to personally in this years program include, The 10 year Memories of Middlesbrough anniversary exhibition which will be available to see in the Hill Street Centre Hub on Thursdays, Friday and Saturdays. The Hub is a new space that will host lots of great activities and events in the next few months so please pop in and see them.
We have an unintentional Boro theme at the start of the festival with three events linked to the football club. Sat 15th at Base Camp we have the Boro Shirt Museum: Resurrection and a Talk about George Camsell delivered by
Tosh Warwick followed by an event delivered by the Middlesbrough supporters group on Saturday 16th Recording Boro Brick Road.
Continuing the football theme Martin Peagam will deliver a talk on Women’s Football in the Hillstreet Shopping Centre hub on Thursday 20th , Martin has several talks in the program this year –I recommend them all.
The Town Hall tours and The Teesside Archives open day are returning and providing another chance to see behind the closed doors of the service, alongside program from regular contributors at the Linthorpe cemetery and Mima to name just a few.
I’ll leave you now to have look through all the wonderful program and look forward to hearing feedback.
As ever we are always looking for new groups and organisations to be involved in programming the festival. So please do get in touch if you have an idea or a proposal for an event.
See you all out there. Leanne Littlewood Head of Culture Middlesbrough Council

Have you heard of the surnames Almgill, Doughty, Dunning, Jackson, Johnson and Oliver? They were surnames of councillors, builders and contractors from Middlesbrough who helped to plan, build and develop our growing town.
We are giving you a rare chance to visit areas of the Victorian gothic Municipal Buildings of the Town Hall complex which are not regularly open to the public. The Council Chamber remains unchanged from its original opening in 1887 and retains its oak panelling,
marble fireplaces and furnishings. You will find out why Hugh Bell’s portrait is missing from the Chamber. You will see the Civic Regalia and other civic treasures, including sporting trophies, candlesticks and regimental gifts. You will also have the opportunity to see an historic photographic timeline of the mayors of the town since 1853. Enjoy exploring the historic building and the civic suite which was last refurbished in 2001. You can also take in the civic honours boards, town charters, memorials to Middlesbrough’s war heroes and portraits of the significant founders of the town.

Torn from Home: Teesside and Jewish Refugees
Thurs 20 Oct 2pm
Discover Middlesbrough Hub (opp. Primark), Hillstreet Shopping Centre, Middlesbrough, TS1 1SU
Refugees are not a modern phenomenon. They have existed for thousands of years. In the 1930s millions of Jews suffered marginalization, legalized discrimination and ultimately extermination under the ethnic cleansing regime of Nazi Germany.
A lucky few – predominantly children – escaped persecution and death, and built new lives in other countries. They included some refugees who – thanks to support from Jews, Quakers, the Salvation Army, and other humanitarians –found a home on Teesside.

As a local historian, the Time Traveller, Martin Peagam has a reputation for bringing the past to life. He will aim to do so again, as he explains how Teesside responded to the events in Europe and tells the fascinating stories of some of those involved.
Over a dozen local men served at the Battle of Trafalgar on 21st October 1805. Local historian and chairman of the Sea Cadets Unit Management Team, Ian Stubbs, explores with his original research the stories of these men and the links with our region. Did you know that a 14 year old boy from Guisborough served at Trafalgar and then went on to become an Admiral?
Come along to find out more fascinating facts like these.
