is two years since the Mini Seven Racing Club’s terrific twin championships last visited Castle Combe, but they are back once again to guarantee crowd-pleasing entertainment, as they have been doing without fail since their first ever visit nearly half-a-century ago! MINI SE7EN On 4 June 1966, Castle Combe hosted the third ever race for Formula Mini-7. Winner that day of the then fledgling 850cc budget saloon formula was Bob Fox, who would go on to win the inaugural title. Today, the Mini

Seven Racing Club’s (M7RC) Bob Fox Trophy for 1.0-litre Mini Se7ens is one of the most prized achievements in the clubmans’ racing calendar, and there is no shortage of contestants trying to add their name to it. Carrying #1 is Andrew Deviny from Newport Pagnell, who took his second Mini Se7en crown in 2013, seven years after his first National title. Andrew actually won the last Mini Se7en race held here in 2012, albeit a nonchampionship thrash in the rain in front of the Motors TV cameras, and is a firm favourite for the day’s Challenge double-header. Max Hunter from Leighton Buzzard is another former National champion (2007), and has come

Pit & Paddock April 2014 Issue 1 very close to a second title on several occasions, so keep a lookout for his energetically driven #46 Hunters Garage car. Max also holds the class lap record around the 1.85-mile track. Darren Thomas will be looking to finish higher than fourth overall, as he has done so for the past two seasons, and knows how to win in his Roonspeed car, while a firsttime race winner last season was 2011 top Novice Ashley Davies, who makes the relatively short trip over the Severn Bridge and up the M4 from South Wales. After a much longer journey in 2013, Ashley’s pitlane start to brilliant victory at a very wet Zolder in Belgium, earned him the M7RC’s Drive of the Season. Of the expected frontrunners, the sideways style of Gareth Hunt is always entertaining around Combe, and indeed Gareth won the last points-scoring race here in 2012, while Graeme Davis can be expected to be on the fringes of a podium finish. began racing in the category in 1984, long before some of his rivals were even born, likewise Julian Affleck (1976) and Jim Burrows (1969). Among the young ‘whipper-snappers’, Leon Wightman, Kieren McDonald and Ross Billison are outside bets from the chasing pack, while there will be a new champion this year in the standard tuned 1.3-litre ‘scholarship’ S-Class, as current title holder Julian Proctor has moved up to the main class. Look out for the S-Class cars numbered from #90 to #99. Picking a winner isn’t easy though – like the Mini Se7en drivers themselves, close your eyes and hold your breath as the pack swarms into Quarry for the first time and see who emerges in front! Chances are however they will be shuffled back in the order as a typical, door-handle-to-doorhandle, slipstreamer around the fast, open Wiltshire circuit unfolds. Enjoy!

been in the Miglia title hunt since switching categories. Perhaps 2014 will be his year? Rupert Deeth, also from the Cambridge area, has spent a couple of seasons as teammate to ‘retiring’ champion Baldwin, and has clearly learned much from the ‘Mini master’, and just needs to turn that front-running pace into an elusive first victory. Both Richard Casey from Lancashire and Dave Drew from Hampshire will be carrying the colours of Challenge co-sponsor Mini Sport, and in Richard’s case also the #37 made famous by Mini rallying legend Paddy Hopkirk. Both too will be looking to go one better than a pair of second and third places respectively in 2013, while past race winners Colin Peacock, Tony Le May and Niven Burge can be title candidates if they run the full season. In addition, Jon Lee is planning a return to the category after a number of years away developing various racing cars, including an intriguing motorbikeengined Mini Cooper. And the likely outcome of not one, but two, Mini Miglia encounters? Well, with speeds topping over 120 mph, expect some thrilling nose-to-tail and three-or-four-abreast action. Sollis and curley return to race in Dunlop Mini7 Classic series
NEw sponsor looking to boost mini7 club profile
T
he Mini7 Racing Club has agreed a new mediasponsorship deal with online magazine, love:mini, as part of an effort to increase publicity and awareness of the championship. love:mini is a free bi-monthly, online-only magazine for both classic and new Mini enthusiasts. The publication will be covering the season in great detail through race reports and can be read for free at www.love-mini.co.uk. “love:mini’s online reach is a great opportunity to boost the Club’s profile and get more people involved with both the Mini 7 Club and Mini motorsport as whole.” says Colin Peacock of the Mini7 Club. “Working with love:mini we will hopefully reach a new audience who look to get their information online nowadays.” As part of the deal love:mini will produce the Official Mini7 Racing Club newsletter and work with the Club to promote the series. love:mini Editor, Craig McBeth said: “The Mini 7 Club has a great heritage that has run alongside the history of the Mini and deciding to work with the Club was a nobrainer. ultiple Mini 7 championship winners Bill Sollis and Ian Curley will return to the track at Castle Combe on April 21st, along with other greats from the Mini 7 such as Endaf Owens, Nick Paddy, Steve Jones and more, all racing their respective Appendix K Mini’s in the inaugural race of the Dunlop Mini7 Classic series. “The idea of the Dunlop Mini7 Classic series came to us from our ex members, simply put, what they wanted was a way to race their highly entertaining Appendix K cars within the friendly Mini7 club atmosphere and we were only too keen to find a way to accommodate their request and for the first year at least, the series will be run as an invitation class, with many of the drivers predicting that 20+ cars could be on the grid in 2015” says Colin Peacock of the Mini7 Club. “It’s a cracking idea, we’re looking forward to being part of it and on the grid at Combe” says Ian Curley, adding that “these cars are going to be real crowd pleasers as we go three abreast into Quarry, sideways! Bill Sollis said, “there seems to be an almost insatiable appetite out there for the chance to race these cars, for me, to go back to racing with the Mini7 club was something we have wanted to do for a long time and this is the perfect opportunity”

Mini 7 Racing:
A potted history Nearly half-a-century for Britain’s longest running one-make saloon car series WORDS: Jeffrey Parish & Richard Williamson
T
he Mini 7 Club was originally formed in the early 1960s by a group of motoring enthusiasts who discovered the versatility of the original Minis (the Morris Mini Minor and the Austin Se7en) and the ease with which they could be modified for competition. Meanwhile, the present Mini Seven Racing Club (M7RC) was formed in 1975 of an amalgamation between the old Racing and London Centres of the M7C. By 1966, Special Saloon racing was already becoming rather expensive for many M7C members and so, initially calling upon the race-organising expertise of the 750 Motor Club, the ultimate lowcost racing formula was devised: Formula Mini 7, with restricted tuning 850cc engines and control
tyres, aimed at lowbudget racers starting out.

A halfway house between the 850cc Formula Mini 7 and the Free Formula cars was provided in 1969 with the introduction of the 1-litre (998cc) Miglia Mini Formula, with twin chokes, less restricted tuning, wide slick tyres, and primarily for Mini Se7en drivers wishing to progress, or for the generally more experienced saloon racer. This initially attracted few of the hordes of eager novices who, armed with copies of the late Clive Trickey’s immortal book Building & Racing an 850 Mini, flocked to Mini 7s. In 1971, a secondary series was introduced, organised by the Thames Estuary Automobile Club (TEAC) for the South Eastern-based drivers, and over the years this

Pit & Paddock April 2014 Issue 1 morphed into the Southern/ Winter Series. Similarly, the Graham Hill Trophy, primarily aimed at novices, also came and went. A major change came in 1976 when, for the first time, the Mini parent company, Leyland Cars (formerly BMC, later BL, then Austin Morris/ Rover, RoverSport, etc), gave backing to the Se7ens and Miglias in exchange for the M7RC administering Leyland’s Group 1-based 1275 GT class. The previously undersubscribed Miglias, renamed Mini 1000, developed into a closely fought and increasingly professional National series, while the Se7ens (renamed Mini 850), despite remaining an essentially ‘fun’ formula, benefited from a smarter image to attract more attention than ever. The 1275 GTs lasted five seasons before being superseded by Mini Metros - but that’s another story... The basic Mini 7 format remained unchanged for nigh on
25 years before an increase in engine size to 1000cc in 1991. With the 850cc ceasing production in the early-1980s, replacement parts were harder to source and the engines had become incredibly highly stressed, so the adoption of a more durable, milder tuned 1000cc made sense. In line with the prevailing ‘green’ issue there was a switch to unleaded fuel too, and to differentiate the two formulae once more, the Miglias made the jump to 1300cc power in 1994. Into the 21st Century, and a ‘budget tuning’ S-Class category for both formulae was also introduced from 2006 onwards while, always looking to be innovative, in 2012 the M7RC created an Invitation category for
A-Series Minis that otherwise didn’t have anywhere else to race on a regular basis. Heading into 2014 the Invitation category has further expanded with Mini-7 Classic, enabling Mini owners in the flourishing historic racing scene, many of whom are ex-M7RC members, to come and race alongside the two dedicated racing formulae of the M7RC. One final interesting statistic is the driver head count: well over 1400 names appear on the M7RC roll call over 45+ years; that equates to more than 30 new drivers per season… What other singlemake race series can claim this strong support over such a long period?

rack fans are being served up a double treat this year. To mark the Mini’s 55th anniversary, track owners MSV are expanding their popular Mini Festival event to two events at two different tracks. Brands Hatch in Kent, will play host to the first Festival on May 11, with Mini drivers offered free entry if they book through the website. The larger event of the two will take place at Cheshire’s Oulton Park circuit where there promises to be lots of entertainment to enjoy both on and off the track. www.mini-festival.co.uk
