Music Elevating to Cosmic Levels...Presenting

DJ Space Age

WRITTEN BY: MARKESHA “WOODSTAR” WOODS

The DJ DJ Space Age, born Octavia Jones, claims and currently lives in Memphis. However, the self proclaimed military brat was born in Germany and has lived in two other countries. The producer turned DJ states, “Well I started out as a producer just making beats but always dreamed of blending music. When I got my first apartment I had house parties and would play music...” It was when a friend purchased her a virtual DJ program and she began to focus on her career as a DJ.

The Music

Extensive world travel heavily influences Space Age. “I chose the name (DJ Space Age) myself because I thought about my style and where I want to take the creativity in my mixing, out of this world and beyond,” she explains. She continues to show that diversity and world appeal in her musical stylings to this day. Space Age has worked with such as artists as MJG & Eightball and David Banner. In addition, she has collaborated with a host of Memphis artists and lent her DJ skills to a host of parties, open mic, and entertainment events around the city.

The Future

DJ Space Age states that she plans to continue to work on developing her style and continuing her career in DJ-ing and music overall. “ I just took on the position of Radio and Publicity Representative for Shore records, an up and coming record company with a diverse and soulful group of Hip Hop and Soul Music Artists,” she reveals to further solidify her desire to diversify the aspects of music that she works in. Additionally, she expresses that she is currently in the early stages of development of her own DJ/music based events to possibly include a DJ battle. She is also looking forward to giving back more for charitable causes. She adds, “I want to eventually work as a music director and do scores for maybe movies in television and short films in the future.” DJ Space Age is no doubt reaching for the stratosphere.

A Meeting at Sycamore and Riley...A Few Words with

Duane Scott

WRITTEN BY: MARKESHA “WOODSTAR” WOODS

Duane Scott, affectionately referred to as D Scott, is an up and coming artist with southern roots. He has been seen all over the mid south in a host of shows, talent displays, award events, and stage plays. While he has a devout following already, D Scott continues to push towards meeting his goals to be an all around entertainer who is known all across the globe. He is currently promoting his newly released CD so be on the look out for him in a city near you. Love Nu Art: How did you get started as an artist? Duane Scott: It’s actually an interesting story. I was at work one day and this guy came up to me and asked me if I wanted to be in a group. He said he had heard me singing walking down the hall one day and liked my voice. That’s when I joined my first group. LNA: What city are you representing? D Scott: Even though I live in Memphis and rep the M, My heart is always in my hometown of Clarksdale, MS. That’s the same place that gave the world Rick Ross, Super-Producer BlacElvis, and the late greats Sam Cooke and Nate Dogg. LNA: At what moment did you know that you wanted to be an entertainer? D Scott: It was probably right after my very first studio session. It’s like as soon as we finished I was telling myself that I could get used to this. LNA: Other than sing, what other aspects of the business are you involved in? D Scott: Well I own my own company (Akon Music Group) at some point I will probably look into signing other artists, but that’s not for a minute cause I really want to get myself established first. I’ve done some writing for some other artists as well. I’ve also got some ideas to even do some movies and maybe even starting a video production company as well. I just want to eventually stay busy doing something. LNA: What are some of your most memorable moments in your career so far? D Scott: It would probably be being nominated in this past year’s KnocDown/SCM Radio Awards and S.E.A. (Southern Entertainment Awards) Show as Indie R&B Artist of the Year. LNA: Is there anyone that your style is inspired or modeled behind? D Scott: Naw not really. I just stay in my lane and do

me like I know how to do me. So far it’s been working out good. LNA: Who is/are your greatest supporters? D Scott: You know I’m not really sure because my fan base is scattered all over the continental United States, but I’ve also got fans down in the Caribbean, in Canada, and over across the big pond in England. LNA: Are there any artists (local or global) that you want to work with in the future? D Scott: I would love to work with Rick Ross just because we are from the same town. I can see myself also doing something with Keyshia Cole, Mary J. Blige, and Musiq Soulchild. LNA: Discuss your songwriting process... D Scott: Well what I do is I like to take a track and listen to it a couple of days to get a feel for it. After about two days that’s when I sit down and let it flow. LNA: When will you know that you have “made it”? D Scott: Ummmm. Good question. I never thought of it but I guess when I can be able to just walk into my Mom’s house and give her a blank check and tell her to make it for whatever she wants…..then I will have made it. LNA: What current products are you pushing, supporting, developing? D Scott: I just released my new project Sycamore & Riley and it’s available on iTunes, and will also be available in Spin Street(Records) in the Memphis area. You can also find my music videos on Youtube. LNA: How can Love Nu Art readers contact and/support you? D Scott: I can be reached online at www.duanescott. net, I’m also on twitter @DuaneScott_RnB, and you can find me on Facebook under Duane Scott.

esigner creates for many a customizer creates for one. COVER STORY

Joseph Boyd J

oseph Boyd is burning up the design scene with innovative, one of a kind sneakers, head gear, and T-shirts. The self identified customizer resides in Memphis, TN. However, his visions expand beyond the atmosphere and take flight. Joesph takes tee, hats, and tennis shoes and transforms them into another existence by redesigning them. Joseph, also referred to as Joe Blow, Joe Cool, and Joe, is one young man that aspires to make heads turn when people behold his designs. “I’m a simple guy, but when comes to shoes and hats that’s another story. With that said the term matching is almost never used in my vocab, because no matter what I do my shoes will almost never match the rest of the outfit. The only time I wear loud colors or complex designs will be on my head or on my feet everything in the middle is low key and simple,” he explains. Joseph states that when approaching a project that he allows the creative process to take its own direction. He explains that when customizing an item it is no longer just a shoe or shirt, it becomes the subject that he is working to transform. Although he is a designer he makes a distinction between what makes him a designer versus his preferred title of customizer, “Designer creates for many a customizer creates for one. Designer makes something out of nothing but a customizer takes something and makes it awesome...When it comes to clothing I’m a designer other than when I custom hand paint a shirt or accessory. Customizing is how I started and it’s what I prefer to do so a customizer I am.” Joseph is currently developing two companies, Flight of Fancy which is his Tshirt line and Univer Soles which is his tennis shoe line. He explains that there are separate missions for each company. Flight of Fancy’s mission he states is, “To provide quality clothing to original individuals who use their unique talents to better themselves the people around them and their environment because you gotta look good when taking over the world!” While he simply emphasizes with Univer Soles that he just wants others to ask continually “what is on your feet?” Joseph is currently continuing to develop the work that he does within his two companies. He shares that he would love to expand into creating art using additional materials such as wood and charcoals. He also states he would like to attract some celebrity clients such as Lupe Fiasco and Corrine Bailey Ray. In the meantime Joseph is gearing up for several arts shows and expos in which his designs will be featured and sold. In addition, he is developing a Call to Duty Pack where he will dedicate a sneaker design to each branch of the military. Joseph is a one man custom design machine whose work will continue to amaze, transform, and take us on a journey.
