Introduction “Travelling Recycled” is the documentation of the project initially named as “Using paper effectivelly while travelling”as my ‘Studio one’ in two and a half year PG Graphic-Design diploma programme in NID. The Subject/ domain area selection is based on our willingness to reflect our core strengths in Graphic Design (illustration, typography, photography, branding, publication). After short courses in Typography, photography, packaging, communication studies in first semester, it was the time to apply the learning

which needs a systematic approach towards handling the project. My entire focus initially was on the subject(to be taken for project) and gradually I figured out the skill to be explored in this project. “Travelling Recycled” aims to look at the journey of paper where the theme given was “Travel and environment”. The project was taken under the valuable guidance of Mr. Rupesh Vyas, the coordinator of Graphic Design deparment in NID.

The photographs (used in the background along with the titles) in the document are from my collection of photographs from the time I had started learning photography (from 1st year of my graduation in ApeeJay College of Fine Arts, Jalandhar) till now. The typeface used for the titles of this document is ‘Klinic slab’ designed by Joe Prince through Admix Designs, a creative design agency working out of the United States. ‘Oficina serif ‘ has been used for the body text which is designed by Erik Spiekermann and Ole Schäfer owned by ITC.

Aboutthe project The project is about the understanding of journey of paper with an aim of using paper effectively while travelling. The project’s system design approach is concerned with the lifecycle of paper; it’s manufacturing, consumption and the disposal and at the same time, it also deals with the issues related to the travel

through railways. The study of the subject reveals few simple yet important facts about paper, their role in environment and the need of their communication to the people travelling in trains. For example, Recycling is one simple method to save certain things from going into trash and other related problems.

So, the outcome of the project is intended to communicate the role of recycling of paper to the people travelling in trains thereby making them realise the value of paper and benefitting the paper mills with sourcing of the raw material for recycling of paper in India itself.

Theneed Paper accounts for more than half of all municipal waste. Anything we do to save paper will help decrease the amount of trash going into landfills. Since most of the people in India travel by train, travelling has a potential where paper can be saved and used for recycling. The need of this project is to sensitize people towards environmental consciousness and make them realise the value of paper through the process of recycling.

Travellingrecycled The theme ‘Travel and environment’ was given for this project. We did brainstorming as a class where we had written all keywords related to travelling and environment. Narrowing it down further, I came up with the topic “Travelling Recycled” where the purpose was to study two areas: Travelling and the process of paper making.

Brainstorming with the class (PG batch 2011) helped to come up with keywords related to the theme 'Travel and Environment' and we started building connections based on our individual understanding and interests. I took up trains as central element within travel. Since 10

childhood, I have been traveling in trains a lot, so I could relate to it more closely. Considering trains as the junction, I started connecting different things associated with it like luggage, food, holidays, tourism etc. and started describing the nature of these associations. The food consumption habbits

of people while traveling made me look at the amount of waste generated out of it which further took me to study materials associated with food like paper, plastic, metal etc. That's how I took up paper as the primary area of the study.

11

ResearchPart 1 Paper is made up of cellulosic fibre sourced from plants. After consumption it often makes its way to trash bins and thus comes to be termed as “waste paper”. This waste paper when recovered becomes the reclaimed cellulose fibre base suitable for paper making. Today the term “recycled fibre” is used to refer to the post consumer paper that has been collected and reused to make paper. Use of recycled fibre for paper making has been picking up the world over, including India.

12

The process of paper recycling

1

At the recycling center, the collected paper is wrapped in tight bales and transported to a paper mill, where it will be recycled into new paper.

2 3

The paper moves by conveyor to a big vat called a pulper, which contains water and chemicals. The pulper chops the recovered paper into small pieces. The process is called repulping. The pulp is forced through screens which removes small contaminants such as bits of plastic and glue. Sometimes the pulp must undergo the processes like cleaning and de-inking.

4 After refining, the clean pulp is ready to be made into paper. The recycled fi ber can be used alone, or blended with new wood fiber (called virgin fi ber) to give it extra strength or smoothness.

5

Water starts to drain from the pulp, and the recycled fibers quickly begin to bond together to form a watery sheet which then dries and is ready to use as paper.

Raw material is insufficient for paper making 17

So, based on the analysis of the research that there is a shortage of raw material for paper making, I started looking at the areas where disposal of once used paper is happening in large amounts (other than areas like households, printers, schools, offices). I looked at the modes of travelling like buses, trains, personal vehicles, aeroplanes. Out of all these, trains and buses are the major means of

esave save save an n eave save save

transport of India and where any activity deals with large amount of anything (paper waste in this case). Paper is consumed while travelling in trains and buses in form of tickets, bag tags, newspaper, magazines, paper cups for tea and coffee, other paper food packaging. Trains, being the effective and fast means of transportation carry 21 million passengers every day. So, I narrowed down to trains

as part of my further study where I started asking for the potential of all kinds of paper for recycling. There I got to know that a paper cup can be recycled 6 to 7 times. Other paper products like newspaper, tissue paper, tickets are already made up of low quality paper, so paper cup is the one which I thought would start the story of ‘paper recycling’ thereby other paper products also following the same.

ResearchPart 2 •  Understanding consumption of paper in trains and railway stations. •  The potential of utilizing all paper (for recycling) used in travelling •  Understanding the material used for making paper cups, its properties and and how much can be recycled.

20

Paper while travelling

A paper cup can be recycled 6 to 7 times... “A paper cup can be recycled 6 to 7 times” said Mr. Biman Ghosh, R & D manager from ITC (Tribeni unit, West Bengal). I spoke to people in paper mills such as J.K. paper mill, ITC paperboard etc. From these sources , I got to know about the process of paper making in detail and the potential of different types of papers in terms of recycling.

In paperboard, there are basically three layers : virgin pulp paper recycled pulp paper virgin pulp paper When recycling happens, fibre looses its strength and therefore it has to be mixed with virgin paper. So, in the three layers of paperboard, recycled paper pulp is put in the middle layer thereby making it usable as paper cups. Also, paper cups are designed to serve hot as well

There are two types of paper: Virgin and Recycled, which are further categorized based on their usage: • Newspaper • White writing and printing paper • Coated paper • Packaging paperboard Out of all these, paper cup which is made up of paperboard has the highest potential of using it again for making new paper.

as cold drinks. So, the drink should not penetrate in the cup and cup should not catch moisture. So, the paperboard which is used for making paper cups is coated with clay, calcium carbonate coating and a binder (which binds everything into one place. In earlier, polyethylene which was non biodegradable was used as a binder but now, PLA i.e. Poly Lactic Acid is used because it is biodegradable. Also, ECF (Elemental Chlorine Free) technology is used by ITC company. The purpose being the bad effects of chlorine on health, because paper has to come in contact with mouth.

Newspaper is already made up of newsprint sheets (semi bleached pulp) which is of poor quality so, there is less scope of recycling. Paper plates are difficult to recycle because of oil contaminants and difficulty of removing layer of foil from many of the paper plates. Tissue paper which also are recyclable but no more remains in a good condition after use. So, I focused on paper cups and started understanding the manufacturing of paperboard.

Percentage of quantity for virgin and recycled paper: In virgin paper, if we are adding 1000 kg of pulp, we get 900 kg of ready paper (10% will be absorbed due to moisture). In recycling waste paper, by adding 1 kg of waste, we get 0.6 - 0.75 kg of ready paper So, during the manufacturing of paper, though the quantity of ready recycled paper is less than the ready virgin paper, the used paper still has the role to play in the making of new paper if the paper is collected, segregated and treated effectively. 21

Analysis People travelling in trains throw all waste out of window which includes paper cups, one of those paper products which have a recycling mark on them and are meant to find its way to recycling industries. Now, the fact that a paper cup can be recycled 6 to 7 times is as important as simply asking people to throw the waste in

22

the dustbins. Or may be more important because people hardly follow these kind of instructions which are ethically correct but do not motivate them to act upon it. Another reason of people not following these instructions is inappropriate approach and tone. People who are travelling in trains rarely know the value of paper because the only thing that is trying to tell them the value of paper is the symbol printed on paper products (paper cups in this case) which is ‘the recycling mark of three arrows twisted in form of a triangle’. People are aware of the issues of littering in nature but are not sensitized enough to take

it into consideration and act upon it. Targeting the mass is always challenging but a story can do wonders. Addressing a matter in form of a simple story to people could help in collecting waste paper and solve other issues like •  Litter in the environment •  Drain blockage •  Expenditure of huge amount of money by railways in clearing the waste which is thrown on tracks at stations when the train halts. •  Absence of source segregation leads to rag pickers struggling with segregation

A paper cup can be recycled 6 to 7 times is as important to communicate as simply asking people to throw the waste in dustbins

23

Conceptualisation The stage of concept generation is crucial but at the same time, it is the main driving force of next stage of “Implementation”. The ideas are explored, criticized and validated along with discussions with my guide which helped me understand the project’s dimensions at various levels.

24

25

Based on the analysis of collected information, I have been told to keep asking myself, two questions which are meant to be very important in the process of design and are as follows: What needs to be communicated and how will it reach to the audience? In the project 'Travelling recycled', What needs to be communicated is the process of recycling along with other factors associated with journeys of both i.e. of paper and people. And the best way to reach to the audience would be through a story which is interesting yet effective.

What is the story? The story begins with a man sitting in the waiting room at railway station. He has nothing much to do other than spending few minutes on phone, reading a newspaper or talking to people around. Though the posters or advertisements in the surroundings don't attract his attention, but if are designed interestingly, could hold his attention for some time and the purpose of the message could be fulfilled.

But what is the story to be communicated? There is a man sitting in the train. He is drinking chai. But what does he do with the So, that's how it helped shape paper cup. He might throw the further set of question/ it out of window of the train answer conversations. but the question is that does he know what happens once he throws it out. The paper

26

cup gets mixed with all other wastes making it difficult to do sorting by rag pickers. It litters the environment. It blocks drainage inviting diseases to home. Did he know that only 3-4% of Indian forest wood can be used for making paper due to which Indian paper mills rely heavily upon imported waste paper to meet the raw material demand. Is that it? Next is the viewer who would make the effort to complete the story. How? Simply pull the shutter down and he would see the process of recycling in the next panel hidden behind the shutter. That's the idea "PULL THE SHUTTER DOWN AND DO NOT THROW WASTE PAPER OUT OF WINDOW"

Can it be explained in detail? The idea is to make a poster which describes the journey of paper. It is an infographic and is intended to reach to them in an interactive or word of mouth approach. The reason of making the communication interactive is to make people remember the poster because anything which is closely observed registers more on people's mind and has a longer impact.

action. This idea is accompanied with redesigning of paper cups which currently bears a recycling symbol. The new design of the cup would bear the illustration of the action(of pulling shutter down) so that the action that actually is happening off the train at railway stations in form of an interactive poster is reminded inside the train through the paper cups.

And the color scheme? Color is not a constraint but looking at the colors of Indian trains which are Red (named as cardinal) or Blue (named as mariner) Out of the two, Red color would be used more dominantly because of its highest wavelength and visibility value. It would be combined with other colors as well like persian green and white.

Since, in the infographic, the story (discussed earlier) is the message itself, the demand for action need not to be prominent. It would be somewhere embedded in the story. The poster will carry the story in form of a 3D structure which resembles the window inside a sleeper class train so that when the person is actually sitting in the train and is about to throw waste paper cup out of window, he is aware of the consequence of the activity and is watching his

So, the poster is graphic design collaborated with product design? Right‌. All which is needed is the prototype right now and a lot of passion for new things to learn.

* Names are according to Chirag mehta's developing of colors and artworks are not to be sent off for printing based on the names.

Lets decide the tone of voice. Should it be Quirky or fun, informative, conversational, serious, witty or any other? For the kind of nature the information has, let it be informative.

What other ideas had come up in mind? There were many other approaches which were thought, discussed and tried, few of which had potential but not very convincing.

27

Idea 1 A self made paper dustbin The idea is to make people prepare a dustbin while travelling in train for themselves in order to maintain cleanliness in their surroundings (providing them with a set of guidelines). Since newspapers are often seen in trains with most of the people, it could be the most easy and accessible way for the same.

Idea 2 A trash guide book A trash guide book would be a small publication design or catalogue which would talk about the various facts concerned with recycling paper showing the benefits as well as consequences of not saving paper.

Idea 3 An illustrative infographic poster + symbol design + paper cup redesign

28

This idea will deliver an interactive poster which has again the various facts concerned with recycling paper showing the benefits as well as consequences of not saving paper. The only difference between this idea and the previous idea would be of the medium where one poster is seen by many people at one time whereas trash guide book needs to be distributed among all people travelling in train which means that a lot of paper consumption is required. Since the intention is not to use paper to communicate a message, the third idea was preferred over the second.

+

+

29

Implementation Any idea for communication should be asked the following questions: Does it gives you the required information ? Does it pulls you inside to read it ? Does it have the required tone of voice ? Does it attract you ? Does it have a conviction ? Out of all the ideas, the idea of making an interactive poster which resembles train's window and redesigning the paper cups was most convincing and was fulfilling the requirements of communication fundamentals written above.

Prototypeproduction The inspiration | Dummy prototype | Material exploration The inspiration is the train’s window. The idea is to make people see the poster like they are actually seeing the window of the train while sitting in the waiting room/railway station. Any interactive activity instead of simply a visual registers better in human mind. When they would actually sit in the train, they would get reminded of the poster they had

38

interacted with. Next was the making of prototype. I made a dummy protype with mountboard for my reference. I took it to the metal workshop. After discussing the project with Kiran bhai, I was to select the material for the poster. Kiran bhai suggested me different materials which could be used for making the poster

such as polystyrene, MDF and foamboard. Accoding to the availability of the material, we used polystyrene to make the prototype. It is a material which is best for model making. It also sticks easily with chloroform. The size of the full polystyrene sheet is 90x90cm and thickness is 3mm.

The poster can also be placed in a digital space and could be operated through websites of tours and travels as an interesting way of As a suggestion, the placement saying the do’s and don’t of of the poster can be extended travelling. to all the places related to travelling such as tourism

43

Post Designactivities User Testing User testing is done under application of design by placing the design at the target place to check its effectiveness where feedback is from the audience in the real place and time.

44

I went to Ahmedabad Railway station and placed my prototype inside the waiting room. I asked few people simply to look at the design and asked for the feedback. All of them were able to understand the infographic.

The colors were bright enough to attract the attention of people towards the poster. One of the feedback from them was that the shutter could have a kind of sensor which pulls the shutter automatically up.
