Taras Manzie is the President & CEO of Lake of the Woods Brewing Company, in rural and remote Northwestern Ontario. If you ask him for a business card, you will see that he far prefers the title - el Presidente. In his almost 30-year career, he has built and sold a few businesses; including a 90’s start-up tech company, a “sweets” business, a small inn and bistro, a coffee company, and now a craft brewing company. He believes in putting people first, sustainable business practices, giving back to the community, and developing a for-profit platform that outperforms, outbrews, and outlasts the competition. For these reasons, he recently won the RBC INNOVATIVE HERO OF THE YEAR AWARD.

IN MORE PLACES THAN JUST ONE LAKE OF THE WOODS IS BLAZING NEW TRAILS at every turn The legends of the past, and especially those who helped shape the shores and all of the small places that touch on the Lake of the Woods, have inspired us to be bold and to take calculated risks. The original Lake of the Woods Brewing Company opened in 1898, in downtown Kenora, Ontario, Canada – along the north shore of Lake of the Woods in boundary waters territory. The Brewery thrived until 1954, when it was forced to close its doors due to consolidation and the emergence of large, national breweries. With the re-opening of Lake of the Woods Brewing Company in 2013, the goal was to get craft beer into the hands of everyone on the Lake – north and south of the 49th parallel and to the west in our neighbouring province of Manitoba.
In the fast pace competitive craft beer environment, craft brewers must look for new ways to be sustainable, relevant, and profitable. With new opportunities to brew our great, craft beer in Manitoba & Minnesota, we will grow our business in new and exciting ways. The two new brewhouses – in Warroad, MN and Winnipeg, MB respectively, engage with the specific geography that is the Lake of the Woods. “We want to service the lake, and the people who inhabit this incredible space, and the lake is touched and surrounded by Minnesota, Manitoba and Ontario,” says Taras Manzie, President & CEO. “That’s our wheelhouse. That’s our backyard. That’s where we’ll play and operate and work to develop communities.”
SOMETIMES THE MOST DIFFICULT JOURNEYS ARE THE MOST REWARDING! LAKE OF THE WOODS BREWING COMPANY PURVEYORS OF TASTY ALES, STOUTS, LAGERS AND GET-TOGETHERS SINCE 1898.

RICHARD INMAN
Music and beer are a natural pairing. Craft beer and local music, even better. As part of our artist series, we recently showcased the singer-songwriter, Richard Inman. Richard has performed in the taproom many times, and we just can’t get enough. LOWBREWCO contributed a cash sponsorship and photoshoot to Richard’s next album. We also hosted a fundraiser show for him on our 6th birthday, and had him in as a featured speaker in our Lake Time podcast! You can learn more about Richard Inman and our previously featured artists, Red Moon Road on the brewery blog.

Honey bees need our help. And, we are going to do our best to save the bees. We have asked our good friend, Terri Gillis to build a beehive that looks just like this old-firehall that we call home. Here are two easy ways to start a conversation. #1.Let your lawn get back to its roots..let it go wild. #2. Say ‘no’ to pesticides & herbicides. #charitypints #savethebees
Our first ever, all female brewed beer was brewed on International Women’s Day by our two amazing female brewers Liz Rumpel & Ashley Watt! Queen B Honey Pale Ale was “all women” power from start to finish. The bee was created & designed by Artist Kimberley Slezak a local artist here in Kenora, Ontario!
BEER N’ TREES
SEE YOU AT THE DOCK This summer LOWBREWCO went from dock to dock deliverying free beers to local cottage folk! #MAKEITLAKETIME
Why should we plant more trees? Planting trees is one of the most powerful and affordable ways to make a big difference for the environment. Trees are essential to life. They create the very air we breathe, they help build soil and help soak up stormwater before it can create a flood. Trees offer energy-saving shade that reduces global warming. Trees create habitat for thousands of different species. Most importantly, trees sequester carbon, acting as a carbon sync, removing carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases from the air, which cools the earth. So, here at LOWBREWCO we’re planting saplings - as fast as we can. In 2020, we will plant 10,000 black spruce, jack pine, and red pine saplings. #onebeeronetree

This beer tells us we know what we’re knowin’ when we don’t know where we’ve been, and we can’t say what we’ve seen but pretty sure field berries can be found all over the North; old logging roads, deer trails, just outside of moose camp; all melding seemingly like a Road to Nowhere… THIS road winds up wherever YOU are. At the end of the day: put the top down, hold on to your hat, crank that 8 track we know where we’re going… the Road to Nowhere. Enjoy responsibly, and dance like no one is watching.

NEW ENGLAND IPA ABV: 6.8% | IBU: 40 | SRM: 5 The Thistles 1907 Stanley Cup win and the 1973 Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce bank robbery. Two landmark (and completely unrelated) events that have put our little town of Kenora on the proverbial “map”. Commemorating the surreal and movie-esque Main Street bank robbery is Lake of the Woods Brewing Company’s small batch release of Dead Man’s Switch New England style IPA – a hazy hop bomb loaded with enough Citra and Amarillo hops to fill a large duffel bag. Unlike the robbery this NEIPA may not shut down the Trans-Canada Highway with its release, however it will leave you gobsmacked feeling like you just walked onto a movie set, and you and Dead Man’s Switch are the stars of the show. Small batch available at the brewery and select bars & restaurants. #makeitlaketime #hopbomb #NEIPA
