In the early settlement of Central Otago, Lowburn was a prominent ferry landing for travellers crossing the Clutha River from the gold mining reefs of Bendigo near the township of Cromwell. The man on the punt depicted in our logo represents the Lowburn Ferry that used to ply across the Clutha River from the gold rush days until 1938 when a bridge was built. The original site of the ferry landing was flooded when the Clutha River became Lake Dunstan. The Lowburn Ferry property features stone buildings dating back to the early gold miners. We have been careful to preserve the history and character of this unique property in our family home and in the production and branding of our special wine.

Lowburn Ferry is a family owned winery with vineyards in a sheltered north-facing terrace in the Lowburn Valley, situated beneath the Pisa Range in Central Otago. Glacial terraces are a distinctive feature of the landscape surrounding Lowburn Ferry, an early settlers’ crossing point over the Clutha River near Cromwell. At Lowburn Ferry vineyard, the cultural history of these soils since the gold rush days have built up the organic matter and soil life, underpinning the production of some of New Zealand’s finest pinot noir. Lowburn Ferry owners Roger and Jean Gibson have academic backgrounds in soil science and horticulture and are totally focussed on producing the best pinot noir wine from their special site in the Lowburn Valley.

Our wines

Home Block Home Block – a classic Central Otago pinot noir. This wine expresses the special terroir from our home farm. Made from pinot noir grapes from our Lowburn Ferry vineyard, it typically has an aromatic nose and lifted perfume of spice and cherry. Rich and concentrated palate with ripe red and dark fruits, hints of chocolate and subtle integrated oak, with a long finish. The Ferryman The Ferryman is a passionate expression of the special terroir of Lowburn Ferry Vineyard. Selected vines are carefully managed during the growing season to produce this special reserve wine crafted only in exceptional vintages. Skeleton Creek Skeleton Creek was the site of a gold diggers’ stopover on the pack track traversing the Pisa Range above Lowburn, in the late 1800s. This wine is a complement to our Home Block label, an expression of the terroir of selected vineyards from the wider Cromwell Basin.
