JAMES HENNESSEY Chicago-born James Hennessey’s work is fraught with recognizable images, products of memory and invention. Drawing is an essential first step in exploring the alternative approach to Hennessey’s compositions but the results do not serve as blueprints for the paintings. His creative interests allude to the experiences of travel and relate to history and the art of the past. The primary influences in his work were accrued during exstensive educaton in American and European institutions including long-term residencies in Italy, France and Ireland. “I have had a tendency to produce paintings and works on paper in related groups exploring a particular motif. Some such groupings have focused on windows as subjects, Italian themes and Irish images. I recently revisited an Irish subject ; the legend of Mad Sweeney, a tortured soul condemned to dwell with the birds in the trees as a punishment for murder.” In 1962, one of Hennessey’s paintings was included in the Museum of Modern Art’s (MOMA) exhibition, “Recent Painting U.S.A., The Figure”. The show was a juried exhibit that subsequently toured the country after the New York opening. This exhibition included promminent figurative masters such as Leon Gotlieb, Elmer Bischoff and Larry Rivers. In the same year, the American Academy in Rome, Italy awarded Hennessey “The Rome Prize”.
