Poet of a Threatened Eden is the first comprehensive survey of works by American multi-disciplinary artist, Frank Hyder, in 25 years. Best known for his use of cinematic devices to transport the viewer to a time of harmony between humanity and nature, Hyder’s works act as reliquaries which facilitate emotional bonds to the world around us - a world that is often forgotten, ignored and abused.
Red Forming Wood, Canvas, Acrylic, and Plexiglass on Panel 80 x 70 inches
A retrospective of works created from 1986 through 2019 will feature 88 of Hyder’s hand-carved, scored, engraved and painted works on wood, and other media, ranging in scale from monumental to intimate. These masterworks depict a ceremonial reverence among the ancients for nature; they function as altar pieces in organic cathedrals composed of the earth’s great temperate and rain forests, its rivers and mountains – from the Americas to Europe and Africa.
Frank Hyder’s four-decade-long mandate to reawaken a recognition of the sacred relationship between nature and all forms of life has yielded a rich repository of works that allow the viewer face-to-face interaction with primeval earth, and our ancestors. His work is noted for its enigmatic light source, achieved through a dense layering of media conveying the rich materiality – the sensuality - of the natural world, and our connection to it.

“ We destroyed the world we had been given For inspiration, for life— Each stone of jealousy, each stone Of fear, greed, envy, and hatred, put out the light. No one was without a stone in his or her hand.
There we were, Right back where we had started. We were bumping into each other In the dark.”

“And now we had no place to live, since we didn’t know How to live with each other. Then one of the stumbling ones took pity on another And shared a blanket.
A spark of kindness made a light. The light made an opening in the darkness. Everyone worked together to make a ladder.”

It has always been here. I have always wished it to be other. As I accustom myself, it changes ever so often. It does all that I need according to plan. It is to many all that I am. Yet, I still wish it be other. Oh, to have another other than this to show to all what I wish, to hide behind and cover that which has always been here. I have always wished to be other The Arrival (Closed) Acrylic on wood 72 x 72 inches

He seemed ordinary at first, no different than others, curious and playful by nature, mysterious in purpose. After a while, he gave it to me, a stone so much a stone that it seemed nothing at all. I wonder. He smiles. I guess. He smilles still. A stone that sings. Smiling, he shakes, loosing a sound. Ah, to be a man with a child for a head.

The first moments are uncertain. only the present is visible. Only the desire to be .
The force is palpable, irresistible and savage. Light and form are one.

Like a magnet it calls. A siren it taunts. it shines. We go in wonder. We churn in its embrace. We are refreshed and beguiled. It tilts and shifts. It bows and roars. It frightens us. It ignores us. We long for it. Does it long for us? Does it wait for our arrival? The Source, 1988 Acrylic on Carved Wood 72 x 96 inches

“Once the world was perfect, and we were happy in that world. Then we took it for granted. Discontent began a small rumble in the earthly mind.
Then Doubt pushed through with its spiked head. And once Doubt ruptured the web, All manner of demon thoughts Jumped through— ” – Joy Harjo
