Transforming Lives Through Education One of my favorite things about my job as President of the college is to hear from our students how LCC has changed their life. Stories like Clinton who was in a downward spiral of crime and addiction until the day he realized he had a choice as to how to live his life! Clinton chose to get a college education and he chose Lower Columbia College. Clinton has since graduated and is enrolled in a bachelor’s Chris Bailey degree program at Washington State University. He is just one of many student success stories that inspire and invigorate our faculty and staff to put students first in everything we do! LCC Foundation Names Delores Rodman 2018-19 Benefactor of the Year Th e Lower Colum bi a C o lle g e Foundation has named Delores Rodman as the 2018-19 Benefactor of the Year. Benefactor honorees have a history of providing charitable financial support to the foundation, and/or significant volunteer service to the colleg e. Most not ably, contributions from honorees have had major impacts on the college, its programs, students, and the community. Delores began her career in the local community as an English teacher at Rainier High School. After teaching for a few years, she changed careers and began working in real estate at Longview Agency with her husband, Bruce. After Bruce’s retirement in 1980, she opened her own real estate office, Rodman Realty. Bruce passed away in 1988. In 2007, Delores established the Bruce E. Rodman Memorial Endowed Scholarship to honor her husband’s memory, his service on the LCC Foundation Board of Directors, and his passion for education. This
scholarship provides two annual awards for first year Washington state business majors with a preference to first generation college students. “Nearly 20 students have had the opportunity to work towards their business degrees with the help of this extraordinary scholarship. LCC is fortunate to have supporters like Delores, whose gifts will continue to benefit students for years to come,” shares Kendra Sprague, LCC Vice President of Foundation, HR & Legal Affairs.
who didn’t have an opportunity to go to college until the age of 24, she reflects on her life in Longview, the important role that LCC fills in the community, and shares, “Bruce and I wanted to become promoters and helpers of young people, to help them complete their college education.”
Since 1992, in addition to the Bruce E. Rodman Memorial Endowed Scholarship, Delores’s contributions include the LCC Library fund and support for the greatest needs of the college. “The LCC Foundation Board of Directors is pleased to honor Delores for more than 26 years of giving and her continued support of students at LCC,” said Rich Gushman, LCC Foundation Chair.
“We appreciate this opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate Delores for her ongoing commitment to education at LCC,” shared LCC President, Chris Bailey.

Cutting Edge Scanning Electron Microscope It is unusual for a community college to own equipment like a scanning electron microscope. The new $130,000 Phenom XL scanning electron microscope was purchased with a U.S. Economic Development Grant matched by the LCC Foundation College Success Fund. For students, the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with an instrument like this is something that sets LCC students apart. The chance to learn with the aid of high-tech equipment in labs and classrooms is more typical of a university. The investment in a variety of state-of-the-art equipment in the Health & Science building has created a dynamic learning environment for students. The microscope can magnify samples up to 105,000 times their actual size, about 100 times more magnifying power than a conventional microscope. In addition, it has cross-curricular application. Art majors, welders, and computer engineers are all finding ways to utilize the new tool in their fields.
Education Through the Ages The Millennial Skills Gap Community colleges are known for their responsiveness to changing economic conditions, which includes preparing a pipeline of workers to enter the labor force. Right now, Millennials make up the largest generation of working adults. In 2018, they ranged in age from 22 to 37 and represent more than one of every three workers. Increasing demand to fill high wage jobs in industry from employers suggests that a “Millennial Skills Gap” may exist.
Preparing Generation Z to Go to Work On the heels of Millennials is Generation Z, making up the occupants of today’s middle and high schools, and our most recent high school graduates. Generation Z makes up the fastest growing sector of our labor market. In Cowlitz County, about half of our high school graduates go to college. Opportunities for people with just a high school diploma are less stable and rewarding than for some previous generations. Given the reality of today’s workforce, members of Generation Z need additional education and training beyond high school to set themselves up for success. LCC has been working hard with local K-12 partners to ensure that all graduates have choices beyond high school that make sense. LCC’s new Multicraft Trades Certificate provides a versatile “13th Year” option for students not looking for a traditional four-year degree. Students who earn the Multicraft Trades Certificate have three career paths available to them. They can enter the workforce at entry-level in the skilled trades, they can pursue an apprenticeship pathway, or they can continue on to one of four associate degree options at LCC, including Diesel & Heavy Equipment Technology, Welding, Machine Trades, or Manufacturing. The benefits of just one additional year of training beyond high school are substantial. Research suggests that a one-year college credential is the “tipping point” between a lifetime of financial hardship and earning a sustainable wage. College Success Fund A Catalyst for Excellence in Education and Innovation The College Success Fund allows LCC to capitalize on emergent needs and opportunities as they arise to better serve our students and community. Your contribution to College Success has been a catalyst for advancing many of our educational programs through investment and innovation such as STEM education and workforce training. This fund continues to enhance our ability to provide quality instruction in our classrooms and labs while preparing students for future success. The College Success Fund supports: nn Academic programs nn Staff and faculty grants nn Innovative learning opportunities nn New instructional equipment and technology nn Veterans’ support services nn Student support programs nn Head Start programs nn Industrial trades recruitment nn Improvements to infrastructure nn Areas of greatest need This year alone, thanks to your support, the College Success Fund helped purchase a new Industrial Technology Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) Machining Center, which allows students in the Machine Trades program to train at industry level. In response to workforce and economic demand for skilled CDL drivers, we purchased an additional CDL vehicle in support of the expanding Diesel Technology’s CDL program. College Success provided funding for a Student Ambassador Program that provides mentorship opportunities, retention, outreach and other support to LCC students. The fund also helped provide $400,000 in state-of-the-art equipment for the Health and Science Building.
The new machine purchased through the College Success Fund replaces our oldest CNC Machining Center, a 1995 model which was the first industrial level Computer Numerical Control Machine Tool in the Machine Trades Program. The College Success Fund supported a new Student Ambassador team of students to work with potential students and current LCC students who could benefit from additional support and resources. While the work they are doing is important for supporting students, building community, and instilling the value of education, the leadership opportunity for these students makes the Student Ambassador program invaluable. Carol and Clayton Greer Memorial Nursing Scholarship – Scholarship Spotlight Carol and Clayton Greer Memorial Nursing Scholarship was established in 1986 by Carol Greer in memory of her husband, Clayton Greer. This nursing scholarship honors the excellent nursing care Clayton received following his heart attack, by nurses who attended LCC. Carol and Clayton had one daughter, Nadine, and owned a local dairy farm. Clayton was also active with the Longview Masonic Lodge and Carol worked at LCC for Dean of Students, helping with scholarships. After Carol passed in 1990, her daughter Nadine and Nadine’s husband, David, continued the scholarship in memory of her parents. Nadine appreciates the value LCC offers when preparing students for university. She shares, “Being raised in a blue collar community, the mill was the end-all. My mom and dad told me to graduate and go on to university.” LCC was the perfect stepping stone. Nadine graduated from R.A. Long High School in 1960 and attended Lower David and Nadine Coburn Columbia College. She helped pay for her education by working in LCC’s main office. After graduating in 1962, she transferred to the University of Washington to obtain her teaching degree. While at UW, she met David Coburn. It was love at first sight and they married in 1963. After they graduated from UW, David enlisted in the Service. When David was shipped overseas, Nadine came back to Longview where she worked as a substitute teacher. David and Nadine now live in California where they enjoy being retired, traveling, and staying connected to LCC through their scholarship recipients. Nadine enjoys receiving and writing letters to their recipients and shares, “Student stories are heartwarming. It is a source of pleasure to me to be able to support the college.” Nadine laughingly remembers her parents saying, “Now that you are finished with school, we can finally afford to send you!” Though her parents were unable to help Nadine, their legacy scholarship has helped more than 33 students since 1986.

The LCC Foundation is committed to helping students achieve their educational dreams by awarding over $374,000 in scholarships to students in the 2017-18 year. Scholarships may be named in honor or memory of an individual or family member, and may also be established in the name of a business or organization to foster a spirit of corporate citizenship and community support. Student Success Fund The LCC Foundation’s Student Success Fund was created in 2012 to provide emergency grants to students most at-risk for abandoning higher education goals due to financial hardships. The fund supports one of LCC’s retention and completion goals for students by providing vital support to encourage completion. Since inception, the fund has provided nearly $370,000 in emergency grants to more than 730 students in need. The average award is $500. For many students, this grant means the difference between success and failure to complete their program. The Student Success Fund works! While completion rates for all LCC students are among the highest in the state at 38%, completions rates for LCC’s Student Success Fund recipients are at 59%.

Over the past three years, loyal TDN readers have donated nearly $130,000 to the Student Success Fund. This spring will mark the fourth annual campaign where we hope to raise another $50,000 for the Student Success Fund. Our community will once again rise up to help LCC students achieve their educational goals and transform their lives.

NWAC Champions Again!
Student Athlete Spotlight Athletic Excellence Scholarships through the LCC Foundation & Boosters go a long way towards success in the classroom and on the field. Just ask LCC soccer star, Chloe Brimhall. “The scholarship was a big help to me,” she said. “I don’t qualify for any financial aid, so getting the scholarship really helped me become less stressed with the cost of tuition and books. That helped me focus on my education and soccer.”
It was another banner year for the Red Devils on the field and in the classroom. The Lower Columbia College Athletics Program won the NWAC Athletic Directors Cup for the second straight year. The cup is awarded to the college that garners the most points in a system using league standings and conference tournament results. All six LCC teams made the NWAC playoffs in 2017-2018. LCC also took second in the President’s Cup given to the NWAC college with the top academic results including GPA and graduation rates. LCC Athletics means excellence on the field or court and in the classroom!
B r i m h a l l c a m e t o LC C f r o m Washougal High School and she was joined by her twin sister Zoey, who also earned a soccer scholarship for the Red Devils. Both were very good soccer players for the Red Devils. Chloe was an NWAC star, earning All-Conference and All-Region honors both seasons. Her outstanding play in the defensive backfield was a key to the Devils earning a playoff berth in 2017 and just missing another in 2018. Chloe, along with her sister, were named to the All-NWAC Academic Team. Chloe chose Lower Columbia College because of her soccer scholarship, but the financial help and opportunity she received was special. “Coming to LCC was one of the greatest decisions I’ve made. I saved a ton of money, and I received an excellent education. The professors go out of their way to make sure you get the personal attention you need to be a success.” Money donated to the Athletics Excellence Fund impacts the lives of student-athletes. “I’ve met some of my best friends through LCC soccer and the LCC campus,” said Chloe. “I’ve grown close to them on the field and in the classroom and have memories that will last forever.”

Red Devils Win Second Straight NWAC Baseball Title The Lower Columbia College baseball team claimed back-to-back championships with a 7-5 victory over Yakima Valley in the title game at Story Field. The Devils rallied from a 3-0 deficit by scoring five runs in the third inning and then held off a ninth inning Yakima rally to claim the program’s 13th championship. The Red Devils won 15 straight games at the end of the season to grab the title. First year head coach, Eric Lane, took over the program late in the fall and became the sixth LCC baseball head coach to win the title. “Winning the championship last year and repeating is really tough to do. It shows how strong the sophomores are and all of the hard work they’ve put in the last two seasons. There’s not a lot of Red Devils who can say they repeated, and for these guys to do that is special.” Hunter Cook and Ricky Muzzy (now with the Washington Huskies) were named to the All-Tournament team along with outfielders Kyle Sandstrom and Noah Andrews and pitchers Yancy Bird and Justin Solt. The team has won the championship three of the last four years.

Red Devil Softball Team Gets To the Championship The LCC softball team just missed out on the school’s 11th championship by dropping an 8-5 result to North Idaho in the title game. Nizhoni Wheeler was outstanding, pitching in every tournament game for LCC. She was named to the All-Tournament team along with teammates Cheyenne Gilbertson, Allyssa Gustafson, and Kendell Clauson. Head coach Traci Fuller, in her 7th season as the Red Devil head coach, was proud of her team. “We all came together as a team and battled all the way to the final game,” she said. “I couldn’t have asked for more and the players represented our college well.”

Gordon Bolar Receives 2019 Transforming Lives Award Gordon Bolar lost his father to alcoholism at an early age, which triggered a series of bad choices that persisted into adulthood. Along the way, Gordon held a series of different jobs and suffered a traumatic brain injury. He fathered two little girls with a woman who disappeared shortly after their second child was born. For nearly a year, he cared for his infants alone while trying to scrape a living together. Things came to a traumatic end when Gordon was arrested for possession of drugs and stolen property. While incarcerated, Gordon was given the option to participate in drug court and live in transitional housing. His program included parenting classes, anger management, and both mental health and addiction treatment. He decided to go back to school. His inspiration was his mother, Donna Bell, a graduate of LCC’s nursing program. Like his mom, Gordon came to LCC ready to change his life. In spite of juggling parenting, homework, treatment, counseling, childcare, appointments, and NA meetings, he managed to excel in his studies. He chose the Diesel and Heavy Equipment Technology program, in hopes of becoming a diesel mechanic. He impressed his instructors, who were able to offer him a work-study position in the department. The wages Gordon earned from his work-study position allowed him to move out of transitional housing and provide a stable home for his children. Gordon finished the Diesel Tech program in 2015 and decided to get his welding certificate as well. By 2017, Gordon had two college degrees. When his instructor Jim Dillinger got a call from CDID (Consolidated Diking and Improvement District) asking for help finding summer workers, Jim suggested Gordon. After some initial hesitation due to Gordon’s past, CDID decided to give him a chance. Gordon received a $500 gift from the Lower Columbia College Foundation to celebrate his nomination for the “Transforming Lives Award” and was honored at an awards banquet in Olympia in January. About Transforming Lives The Washington State Association of College Trustees (ACT) created the Transforming Lives Awards program in 2012 to recognize current or former students whose lives have been transformed by pursuing higher education at a community or technical college.

Lou Mace Named 2018 Alumnus of the Year
2018 All Washington Academic Team Two LCC students – Clinton Howard and Marinda Strine – have made the 2018 All-Washington Academic Team. The program recognizes Washington’s finest higher education students for their scholastic achievement and community and college service. Clinton Howard was president of the Associated Students of Lower Columbia College during the 17-18 academic year. He was born addicted to drugs and entered life surrounded by crime and despair. After dropping out of school and becoming an addict himself, Clinton ultimately spent several years behind bars before deciding to enroll at LCC in winter 2016. He received the Outstanding Student Award in Psychology, and the Transforming Lives Award. Clinton now attends Washington State University-Vancouver. His educational goal is to earn an advanced degree in organizational psychology. Clinton was also named a 2018 CocaCola Academic Team Bronze Scholar and received a $1,000 scholarship. Marinda Strine was the president of the local chapter of Phi Theta Kappa. In this role, Marinda developed a scholarship program for students with financial barriers to participate in the honor society. Marinda was a Running Start student and graduated with both her high school diploma and associate degree. She attends the University of Washington majoring in biological and biomedical sciences (focusing on neuroscience). Her goal is become a medical doctor. Clinton and Marinda each received a scholarship from the LCC Foundation.

Lou Mace graduated from R.A. Long High School in 1953 and attended LCC from 1954-55. While at LCC, Lou was a Track and Field star in pole vaulting. In 1954, he placed second at the WAAC championships at 12’3”. In 1955, Lou set a Washington state junior college record of 12’9 ¼”. That same year, he claimed the WAAC championship title. Lou continued his education at Oregon State University (OSU) where he obtained his Bachelor’s in Civil Engineering in 1959. Lou’s engineering career began with work on hydro projects on the Columbia and Snake rivers. He then established his own company, which was eventually purchased by S.J. Groves Construction. Some notable projects include the I-205 bridge connecting Washington and Oregon over the Columbia River, the widening of I-84 in Portland, and construction of five major dams on the Columbia and Snake rivers. One of these dams included the $250 million dollar second powerhouse at Bonneville which was the largest contract ever awarded by the Corp of Engineers at that time. In 1983, Lou became President of S.J. Groves Construction and C.O.O. of S.J. Groves Inc. overseeing operations in South America, Canada, and Saudi Arabia. After resigning in 1986, Lou restarted his old company, M.A.C.E., and constructed one more dam in Visalia CA, as well as performing specialty contracts for the F.A.A. and the U.S. Air Force. Lou was inducted in the Oregon State Engineering Hall of Fame in 2005. In 2014, was inducted into the LCC Hall of Fame honoring his athletic excellence in Track and Field. Since retiring in 1991, Lou and his wife Jeanne divide their time between California and Idaho. Lou Mace shares, “I consider myself very fortunate as well as lucky to achieve the success that I have enjoyed. Donor Spotlight: John and Cathy Natt John and Cathy Natt have consistently donated to Lower Columbia College for over 20 years. The Natts and their family have long ties to Lower Columbia College. They believe in the value of education and the importance of LCC to the Lower Columbia region. John and Cathy have contributed nearly $60,000 to the Foundation’s unrestricted fund. In addition, John Natt and his family established the Theodore McClelland Natt Endowed Scholarship in 1999 in memory of John’s brother, Ted, who passed away in a helicopter crash. John’s extended family also established the Natt Library Endowment providing funding for library needs over the years. Even though John and Cathy now live in California, they remain committed to the success of LCC students and our community.
Dedication of Honored Spaces Myklebust Gymnasium The Jeane Wirkkala Moksness Lobby is located inside the west entrance of LCC’s Myklebust Gymnasium & Fitness Center in honor of Jeane Wirkkala Moksness’ ongoing support of LCC. Jeane provided a major gift to the college in support of the Student Success Fund and the Early Learning Center. Jeane’s connections span back to 1956, when she first attended LCC and played on the inaugural women’s basketball team. The team went undefeated in their first year. Jeane also worked for LCC’s Early Learning Center as an instructor and coordinator for 23 years before retiring in June 2000. Jeane stays connected to the college through the LCC Retiree Association and shares, “As a former student and instructor at Lower Columbia College, I am aware of the need for additional financial support for some students. I feel Lower Columbia College gives our community an excellent opportunity to further their educational goals.”
Outdoor Spaces The Pickett Plaza is located in the center of campus near the Anderson Family Pavilion and includes a stone circle seating area and water feature. This space honors Dr. Vernon “Pete” Pickett’s distinguished service as President of Lower Columbia College from 1980-1997. After serving LCC, Dr. Pickett was granted President Emeritus status. Some of Dr. Pickett’s highlights as president include leading the college into the age of digital technology by providing computers for staff, upgrading the phone system, and implementing the first computer lab in an educational institution in Cowlitz County. LCC’s campus expanded with the addition of the first Head Start building, the Student Center, the Don Talley vocational building, the campus maintenance building, and the purchase of the Administration building. Dr. Pickett and his wife, Karen, remain committed to the mission of the college through philanthropic support to the Student Success Fund, Athletic Excellence Fund, and the College Success Fund. The Picketts are regular attendees to LCC campus events, are members of the Wertheimer Society, and are active in the Retiree Association. “LCC is a great institution and one I was privileged to be a part of for 17 years. I’m impressed with the progress the college continues to make,” shared Dr. Pickett about his tenure as President of LCC.

LCC Foundation Endowments Endowments are the gift that provide perpetual support for scholarships or other programs according to the intent of the donor. Endowments may be named in honor of loved one or to create a family legacy. The minimum required to establish and endowment is $20,000, which may be pledged over time. The funds are invested to provide a permanent source of income, while the principal is always protected. Endowments are as of June 30, 2018.
