Once again, three experts in scientific research, policy and ethics, handpicked by Nature, will share their insights on issues at the interface of science, ethics, society and politics.

Monday 5 October PABLO NERUDA Curated by Poet in the City A celebration of one of the world’s greatest  poets and of his visit to the Round House in Camden in 1970. This great Chilean poet was so popular in his lifetime that he could fill a football stadium for a reading. As well as being one of the world’s greatest love poets, he is also remembered for his political engagement, and for drawing attention to the savagery of the Spanish Civil War. More recently a new generation was introduced to his work as a result of the film Il Postino. Featuring leading Neruda experts together with readings of his poetry in both the original Spanish and in English translation.

Monday 12 October ART: WHAT’S IT GOOD FOR? Curated by The London Centre for Arts and Cultural Exchange (LCACE) Chair – Michael Portillo A panel of high-profile figures from the arts world, academics, commentators and   2

economists will come together to debate Art: What’s it good for? At a time of turmoil in the global economy, with a recession upon us, conflict in many parts of the world and the threat of climate change, the arts may, on the surface, seem something of an indulgence. But can the arts help lead us back to hope, health and prosperity? www.lcace.org.uk

Monday 19 October CLIVE JAMES – THE BLAZE OF OBSCURITY Curated by Picador Clive James will be forever remembered as a legendary television presenter – the man who brought us Japanese endurance gameshows and Margarita Pracatan, not to mention his award-winning ‘Postcards’ series and his interviews with the likes of Roman Polanski, Audrey Hepburn and Hugh Hefner. His fifth volume of Unreliable Memoirs charts these years with his trademark elegance and wit.

Monday 2 November POETRY AND FILM

Monday 23 November THE GUARDIAN EVENTS SERIES

Curated by Poet in the City Bringing together poets and film aficionados for an exploration of the fascinating connections between poetry and film. Not only have great films been made about poets and their lives, but poets have often reflected on films and film-making in their work. Some poets are said to use the techniques of film, and some great movies are said to aspire to poetic status. Join us for a fabulous evening of splicing and editing. Lights, camera, action!

Monday 9 November THE Nature AUTUMN ’09 Debate 2

Curated by Poet in the City A major London-based celebration of Scotland’s most famous poet, marking the 250th anniversary of the poet’s birth in 1759, and taking place on St Andrew’s Day. Robbie Burns was a leading figure in the Romantic movement and a champion of Scottish language. The author of many famous poems and lyrics, including Auld Lang Syne, he has become a cultural icon all over the world. This fantastic event will feature the distinguished biographer Robert Crawford, leading Scottish poets Jackie Kay and Liz Lockhead, and settings of Burns’ poems to music performed by award-winning Scottish folk singers Karine Polwart, Annie Grace and Corrina Hewat (the Polwart Vocal Trio).

The second of two panel events curated by the international weekly science journal Nature focuses on current debates on issues where science meets society, ethics and politics. Come along and take part in a mindstretching evening. Question the insights of three experts in scientific research, policy and ethics, hand-picked by Nature.

Monday 16 November THE ART OF RHETORIC Curated by English PEN In the year since Barack Obama was elected President of the United States, the visionary language which he used to inspire a nation has come under intense pressure. Does Obama’s mastery of rhetoric conceal a lack of substance? Or are we too cynical about political language in the UK? English PEN leads a discussion of the uses and abuses of language by politicians on both sides of the Atlantic.

British mould-breakers blurring the edges of contemporary classical and electronic music. Following its sell-out success in the Kings Place 2008 Opening Festival, BEYOND THE LOOP, curated by John Metcalfe, returns with eight concerts showcasing the very best of British creativity and performance at the sharp edge of contemporary classical and electronic scenes. With the programming artist-led and specifically designed to demonstrate a healthy blurring of genre and style, these events bristle with artists at the height of their creative energies and experience. From the worldrenowned Duke Quartet to the electronic artistry of Warp Records’ Plaid and from Factory’s cult group Durutti Column to electro-whizz Jon Hopkins, this festival is an absolute must for fans and adventurous newcomers alike. Culminating in the astounding collaboration involving live composition between electro pioneers The Bays, composers Simon Hale and John Metcalfe and the innovative Heritage Orchestra, this is not to be missed.

One of Factory Record’s originals, the maverick, uncategorisable and inimitable music of Manchester’s Vini Reilly and Bruce Mitchell has been enchanting a fiercely loyal crowd for nearly thirty years. An extremely rare chance to hear sublime music in a sublime acoustic. Hall One 9.00pm

THE BAYS / SIMON HALE / JOHN METCALFE / THE HERITAGE ORCHESTRA This collaboration is unique and the concept simple but terrifying. Walk on stage and start composing (using Sibelius notation software) from scratch. No safety net. No pre-composed ideas or templates just a blank score. The orchestral musicians play from monitors linked to the composers’ computers. Jules Buckley, the Heritage Orchestra’s conductor, working from the ever-developing on-screen scores, brings in the musicians as he sees fit. The Bays respond. The composers respond to the Bays and orchestra. And so on. Suddenly you realise you are in the middle of a ‘never to be repeated’ aural experience which could move in any direction at any time. Scary but unbelievably exhilarating for both audience and musicians. Hall One 9.00pm £24.50 £19.50 £15.50; Saver Seat £9.50

The Guardian HAY FESTIVAL comes to London with a special festival programme of conversations, lectures and performances by writers and artists exploring the literature of London. It’s often said that New York looks like it does in the movies, but that London is the great city of books. We’d like to invite you to help frame the programme by nominating which books and poetry based here in the capital you’d like to discuss in this KINGS PLACE BOOK CLUB.

23, 24, 25 October

14 – 17 October

The remarkable outpouring of masterpieces in the last years of Schubert’s life has left an indelible impression – not only on audiences but also on performers and composers. It is difficult not to include at least one of these expansive works in our individual Desert Island Discs. Profound and yet accessible, substantial and yet timeless, our musical diet would be so incomplete without the high lyricism and the bittersweet beauty of Schubert’s distinct and moving voice. Alongside Schubert, we also explore some of the most vivid compositions from the early 20th century. I hope that you enjoy this novel juxtaposition. Levon Chilingirian

LONDON GUITAR FESTIVAL IN THE FALL

This is a cosmopolitan festival for a global city. At its heart is the cultural golden age of the Arabic, Jewish and Christian melting pot of Andalucia, lasting from about 700 to almost 1500. Rediscovering the music of this remarkable period has provided many of the highlights of recent years. It reminds us that intercultural creativity can produce truly outstanding work. It also informed Andalucian guitar culture in a profound way. In this festival we can hear several versions of the mainly acoustic guitar and many ways of playing it. The variety extends from the imitation of traditional Chinese instruments to ouds dynamised by electronica, from semi-improvised to notated music and from roots music to jazz. It is truly a festival of highlights. Wednesday 28 October

LONDON JAZZ FESTIVAL – Stefano Bollani

A hero of today’s European jazz, whose reputation is fast growing world-wide, his music romps through the history of jazz and much more – Scott Joplin rags, free improvisation, tangos and Brazilian bossa, time-honoured standards, Prokofiev and the Beach Boys all provide material for a richly fertile and intensely creative imagination, further characterised by a brilliant approach to his own original music. He is also a riveting – and often very funny – live performer, whose stage presence draws the audience into a unique musical vision, imbued with the warmth and wit of his native Italy. It’s a measure of the respect he’s garnered in recent years that he was named as one of the five most important jazz musicians of 2007, alongside the likes of Sonny Rollins and Ornette Coleman; and later the same year was awarded the European Jazz Prize as Musician of the Year. The four nights of this Kings Place residency will offer a fascinating insight into Bollani’s world. His recordings and performances range from solo to trio, to quintet to orchestra, and his memorable duo with his mentor, the great trumpeter Enrico Rava, captivated the Barbican at the 2007 London Jazz Festival. ‘...playful, cerebral and virtuosic in equal measures’ Mojo ‘...perhaps the most gifted pianist since Art Tatum’ Enrico Rava Last year’s collaboration between the Festival and Kings Place celebrated the uniquely Nordic character of Norwegian music and culture. This year, Stefano Bollani brings a Mediterranean spirit to reflect a contrasting, but equally absorbing facet of the richly varied European jazz scene.   Tickets available from £6.50 Further details at www.kingsplace.co.uk www.londonjazzfestival.org.uk

‘Nearly everybody knows his Octet, a piece of music written at the age of sixteen. Surely no other composer has surpassed that achievement at so young an age. Unfortunately the rest of his wonderful chamber music is unjustly neglected. We do not need an excuse to celebrate this outstanding composer, but I will seize any opportunity to bring his great talent to a wider audience.’ Peter Cropper ‘From the astonishing Op.13, an immense tribute to Beethoven, unbelievable from an 18 year-old, to the violent, heart-wrenching Op. 80, written months before his death, each of his quartets is completely unique, a masterpiece in its own right. Mendelssohn holds a very special place in our hearts, which is why we wanted a connection to him through our name, and chose his music for our first disc.’ Sara Bitlloch, Elias Quartet Wednesday 25 November ELIAS QUARTET and FRIENDS Magnus Johnston violin Claudia Ajmone-Marsan violin Ettore Causa viola, Alice Neary cello Quartet in A minor Op.13 Quintet in A Op.18 Octet in Eb Op.16 Hall One 7.30pm £29.50 £24.50 £19.50; Saver Seat £9.50

CLASSICAL OPERA COMPANY Handel in Italy 2 – 5 December

THE CLASSICAL OPERA COMPANY commemorates the 250th anniversary of Handel’s death with a survey of the magnificent series of works which he wrote in Italy at the outset of his career. Handel arrived in Italy towards the end of 1706, at the age of twenty-one, returning to his native Germany in early 1710. This period marked his coming-of-age as a composer, and many of his Italian compositions are now recognised as masterpieces. The Classical Opera Company has assembled an outstanding line-up of artists for this major Handel celebration. Wednesday 2 December

Ian McKeever Temple Painting 2005/06

Jane Bown Samuel Beckett

IAN McKEEVER: The Temple Paintings 4 September – 16 October

LYNN CHADWICK RA 16 September – 8 November

Ian McKeever has developed a pictorial language which is unique in British painting. Produced between 2004 and 2006, the Temple Paintings show the artist’s continuing interest in exploring a visual language that subtly shifts between figuration and abstraction, but which is neither narrative nor symbolic.

Pangolin London is delighted to present a major show of sculpture by celebrated sculptor Lynn Chadwick (1914 – 2003). Widely considered one of the most important British sculptors of the 20th century, this exhibition explores his abstract work of the 1950s and includes a number of pieces never seen before in public.

JANE BOWN: 100 Portraits 22 October – 22 November

JON BUCK 18 November – 10 January 2010

Jane Bown has been taking portraits for The Observer newspaper since the late 1940s. Working almost exclusively in black and white, she is widely regarded as the finest portrait photographer of her generation. The exhibition includes her iconic images of Samuel Beckett, Björk, the Queen, as well as a wealth of unknown portraits from the 1950s and 60s.

With his bold, bright animal and human forms Jon Buck’s lively sculptures explore our connection with the primitive. His ability to reduce detail to simple line and volume results in sculptures that are immediately recognisable yet distinctly powerful. This body of new work will certainly help dispel the winter blues. (Exhibition is closed between Christmas and New Year.)

ØRNULF OPDAHL: Recent Paintings 27 November – 12 February 2010 It is no mere coincidence that Norway’s most distinguished contemporary landscape painters come from the west of Norway, a landscape which is marked by deep contrasts and an evanescent light. Even though he derives his work from the landscape, Opdahl creates images which are worlds removed from picturesque certainties of Nordic stereotypes. Instead of sun-dappled fjords, cobalt blue skies and tidily ordered conifers, he offers towering slabs of earthy pigment, shafts of filtering light and an ominous sense of natural power.

‘Kings Place is a space that performers will want to play, and audiences will want to visit, with its combination of world-class acoustics, free art galleries – and great bacon sandwiches.’ The Guardian

‘Kings Place stands like a kind of urban island, with Regent’s Canal to one side and Battlebridge Basin to the rear. Looking from the front, you can see greenery, while the water at the back was a pleasant surprise...the building could hardly be more welcoming.’ Sunday Times

Spring House Design | Print: Graphicom srl | Photography: Tom Bland, Keith Paisley, Liv Prema Ronningen

‘The larger Hall One, dressed in 500 year-old Black Forest oak, is comfortable, intimate and raked, guaranteeing perfect sight lines even for the more Lilliputian. Its columned upper level is cleverly lit to create an illusion of blue sky in a subterranean shoebox. Imagine one of De Chirico’s mysterious arcaded piazzas.’ Evening Standard

‘Kings Place is a wonderful resource for concert audiences across North London, with some fascinating projects.’ Ham & High

‘The acoustic is excellent and the performers seem genuinely thrilled with it.’ Classic FM
