Monday 21 September THE Nature AUTUMN ’09 Debate 1 The international weekly science journal Nature returns to Kings Place for the first of two exciting and mind-stretching autumn events. Once again, three experts in scientific research, policy and ethics, handpicked by Nature, will share their insights on issues at the interface of science, ethics, society and politics.
Monday 5 October PABLO NERUDA Curated by Poet in the City A celebration of one of the world’s greatest poets and of his visit to the Round House in Camden in 1970. This great Chilean poet was so popular in his lifetime that he could fill a football stadium for a reading. As well as being one of the world’s greatest love poets, he is also remembered for his political engagement, and for drawing attention to the savagery of the Spanish Civil War. More recently a new generation was introduced to his work as a result of the film Il Postino. Featuring leading Neruda experts together with readings of his poetry in both the original Spanish and in English translation.
Monday 12 October ART: WHAT’S IT GOOD FOR? Curated by The London Centre for Arts and Cultural Exchange (LCACE) Chair – Michael Portillo A panel of high-profile figures from the arts world, academics, commentators and 2
economists will come together to debate Art: What’s it good for? At a time of turmoil in the global economy, with a recession upon us, conflict in many parts of the world and the threat of climate change, the arts may, on the surface, seem something of an indulgence. Monday 19 October CLIVE JAMES – THE BLAZE OF OBSCURITY Curated by Picador Clive James will be forever remembered as a legendary television presenter – the man who brought us Japanese endurance gameshows and Margarita Pracatan, not to mention his award-winning ‘Postcards’ series and his interviews with the likes of Roman Polanski, Audrey Hepburn and Hugh Hefner. His fifth volume of Unreliable Memoirs charts these years with his trademark elegance and wit.

Monday 9 November THE Nature AUTUMN ’09 Debate 2
Curated by Poet in the City A major London-based celebration of Scotland’s most famous poet, marking the 250th anniversary of the poet’s birth in 1759, and taking place on St Andrew’s Day. Robbie Burns was a leading figure in the Romantic movement and a champion of Scottish language. The author of many famous poems and lyrics, including Auld Lang Syne, he has become a cultural icon all over the world. This fantastic event will feature the distinguished biographer Robert Crawford, leading Scottish poets Jackie Kay and Liz Lockhead, and settings of Burns’ poems to music performed by award-winning Scottish folk singers Karine Polwart, Annie Grace and Corrina Hewat (the Polwart Vocal Trio).
The second of two panel events curated by the international weekly science journal Nature focuses on current debates on issues where science meets society, ethics and politics. Come along and take part in a mindstretching evening. Question the insights of three experts in scientific research, policy and ethics, hand-picked by Nature.

Curated by London Improvisers Orchestra The London Improvisers Orchestra (LIO) celebrated their 10th anniversary in 2008. An ensemble of 20 to 40 people, the members hail from the worlds of improvised music, jazz, pop, world and classical traditions. Each performance involves directed ‘conductions’ and an undirected piece. Whatever happens, the LIO take listeners on a roller-coaster ride to the outer limits of their imagination.
Curated by SARGASSO:C Celebrating Jonathan Harvey’s 70th birthday with the composer himself. Pianist Philip Mead, cellist Neil Heyde, electronica manipulator Kaffe Matthews and others play Tombeau de Messiaen, Advaya and Mortuos Plango, Vivos Voco, as well as more alternative works. Monday 21 September TWITTERING MACHINES AND SUTARTINÉS Curated by Anton Lukoszevieze Lithuanian contemporary music is a hidden gem in the European scene, characterised by a proto-pagan minimalism and a folkinspired sensibility. Sutartinés form the bedrock of much new Lithuanian music, together with electronica and the canonic inventions of composer Rytis Mažulis. Cellist and curator Anton Lukoszevieze plays and introduces the Chordos String Quartet, plus rarely-heard music by leading Fluxus member George Maciûnas.

THE SPONTANEOUS COSMIC RAWEXTRA Curated by Orphy Robinson The debut of a collective of musicians with a rich cultural mix of sonic explorations, inspired by artists such as Sun Ra, The Art Ensemble of Chicago, AACM, Eric Dolphy, Anthony Braxton, Cecil Taylor, Ornette Coleman, Henry Threadgill and Charles Mingus. TSCR features some of the most original and influential musicians in the UK, infusing the proceedings with their own Afro-Caribbean heritage as well as African and western classical music.
Monday 2 November SUM OVER HISTORIES Curated by ELISION Sum Over Histories examines the work of British composers Richard Barrett, Chris Dench and Michael Finnissy. The hyper-virtuosity of this repertoire is complemented by the dramatic quality of pieces by American composers Evan Johnson and Aaron Cassidy. The event features performers Richard Haynes and Carl Rosman.

Sophia Town to Camden Town brings together a crossgenerational group of internationallyrenowned musicians to reinterpret those classic post-township melodies and bring back the sounds of freedom that connected the dark days of apartheid to inner-city London, in a unique and historic live performance. Since 1999 the London Chamber Music Society has managed the celebrated London concert series which can trace its origins back to the Sunday concerts at South Place from the 1880s and then Conway Hall from 1929. Their legacy is extraordinary, with many important premieres and numerous famous performers being associated with the concerts over the years, including Henry Wood, Frank Bridge, Albert Sammons, Eugène Ysaÿe and Percy Grainger.

EISENSTADT HAYDN FESTIVAL Friday 11 September
Austria’s HAYDN TRIO EISENSTADT celebrate the bicentenary of Haydn, whose tomb rests in its home town. The week mirrors the Triothlon festival the Trio presented in Eisenstadt in May 2009. Four particular repertoire strands are interwoven: a selection of 14 Piano Trios from the many scintillating Trios of Joseph Haydn and a selection of Haydn’s settings of Scottish and Welsh folksongs for voice and piano trio, sung by Lorna Anderson and Jamie MacDougall. There will be 18 London premières by worldrenowned composers from every continent of newly-commissioned short Piano Trios Dedicated to Haydn, (www.D2H.at.) Lastly, a rare opportunity to hear Haydn’s ‘London’ flute trios, rare String Trios and Baryton Trios with guest artists.

IRCAM is the Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique/Musique – an iconic centre founded by Pierre Boulez in 1977 to explore the science of music and a workshop for composers. THE LONDON SINFONIETTA presents a snapshot of electroacoustic and electronic music from around the world. For the past 70 years composers have been exploring the amazing and compelling music created when the natural, live sound of instruments is added to and altered by taped sounds or electronic manipulation, or new works are created on tape using synthesised sounds or altered recordings of the urban and natural landscape. This mini-festival offers the chance to get inside this fascinating sound-world with both classic pieces and the latest experiments. LONDON GUITAR FESTIVAL IN THE FALL
This is a cosmopolitan festival for a global city. At its heart is the cultural golden age of the Arabic, Jewish and Christian melting pot of Andalucia, lasting from about 700 to almost 1500. Rediscovering the music of this remarkable period has provided many of the highlights of recent years. It reminds us that intercultural creativity can produce truly outstanding work. It also informed Andalucian guitar culture in a profound way. In this festival we can hear several versions of the mainly acoustic guitar and many ways of playing it. The variety extends from the imitation of traditional Chinese instruments to ouds dynamised by electronica, from semi-improvised to notated music and from roots music to jazz. LONDON JAZZ FESTIVAL – Stefano Bollani
A hero of today’s European jazz, whose reputation is fast growing world-wide, his music romps through the history of jazz and much more – Scott Joplin rags, free improvisation, tangos and Brazilian bossa, time-honoured standards, Prokofiev and the Beach Boys all provide material for a richly fertile and intensely creative imagination, further characterised by a brilliant approach to his own original music. He is also a riveting – and often very funny – live performer, whose stage presence draws the audience into a unique musical vision, imbued with the warmth and wit of his native Italy. It’s a measure of the respect he’s garnered in recent years that he was named as one of the five most important jazz musicians of 2007, alongside the likes of Sonny Rollins and Ornette Coleman; and later the same year was awarded the European Jazz Prize as Musician of the Year. The four nights of this Kings Place residency will offer a fascinating insight into Bollani’s world. THE CLASSICAL OPERA COMPANY commemorates the 250th anniversary of Handel’s death with a survey of the magnificent series of works which he wrote in Italy at the outset of his career. Handel arrived in Italy towards the end of 1706, at the age of twenty-one, returning to his native Germany in early 1710. This period marked his coming-of-age as a composer, and many of his Italian compositions are now recognised as masterpieces. Their innovative small-scale productions have opened up their favourite Renaissance and contemporary music to new audiences and have included films and operas as well as chamber-style events. In 2006 they won the top UK ensemble prize from the Royal Philmarmonic Society. This special week sees I Fagiolini ‘a capella’ in a festive Christmas programme, with their fiery Norwegian colleagues in Bach (there is no better venue than Kings Place for this), and a Schubert recital from ex-Fagiolino James Gilchrist.

PETER CROPPER / Celebrating Mendelssohn For over 40 years the name Peter Cropper was synonymous with that of the Lindsay Quartet, whose impassioned style and close identification with the quartets of Beethoven set it in the vanguard of British chamber ensembles. A duo partnership with Martin Roscoe has produced more insightful recordings of Beethoven, and with Moray Welsh adding cello, Cropper is enthusiastically exploring the piano trio repertoire anew. THE CLASSICAL OPERA COMPANY / Handel in Italy The Classical Opera Company was founded in 1997 by conductor Ian Page. It specialises in the music of Mozart and his contemporaries, performing with its own period-instrument orchestra, and has attracted considerable acclaim for its high quality and imaginative programming, but in particular its ability to discover and nurture outstanding young singers. NETIA JONES / Transition Projects – Darkness and Light Netia Jones is a director/designer and video designer in opera and theatre, using video, film and projected media in all of her work. She is founder and artistic director of Transition, which launched in 2007, the ‘energetic’ (The Guardian) and ‘vibrant’ (The Independent) performance group which combines live music and opera with new media, video and film. ROBERT HOLLINGWORTH / I Fagiolini’s Christmas Party Robert Hollingworth founded I Fagiolini in 1986. Ian McKeever has developed a pictorial language which is unique in British painting. Produced between 2004 and 2006, the Temple Paintings show the artist’s continuing interest in exploring a visual language that subtly shifts between figuration and abstraction, but which is neither narrative nor symbolic.
Pangolin London is delighted to present a major show of sculpture by celebrated sculptor Lynn Chadwick (1914 – 2003). Widely considered one of the most important British sculptors of the 20th century, this exhibition explores his abstract work of the 1950s and includes a number of pieces never seen before in public.

Jane Bown has been taking portraits for The Observer newspaper since the late 1940s. Working almost exclusively in black and white, she is widely regarded as the finest portrait photographer of her generation. The exhibition includes her iconic images of Samuel Beckett, Björk, the Queen, as well as a wealth of unknown portraits from the 1950s and 60s.
With his bold, bright animal and human forms Jon Buck’s lively sculptures explore our connection with the primitive. His ability to reduce detail to simple line and volume results in sculptures that are immediately recognisable yet distinctly powerful. This body of new work will certainly help dispel the winter blues. (Exhibition is closed between Christmas and New Year.)
ØRNULF OPDAHL: Recent Paintings 27 November – 12 February 2010 It is no mere coincidence that Norway’s most distinguished contemporary landscape painters come from the west of Norway, a landscape which is marked by deep contrasts and an evanescent light. Even though he derives his work from the landscape, Opdahl creates images which are worlds removed from picturesque certainties of Nordic stereotypes. Instead of sun-dappled fjords, cobalt blue skies and tidily ordered conifers, he offers towering slabs of earthy pigment, shafts of filtering light and an ominous sense of natural power.
