Company B Performance Gets A+ Review Melody Ogoke Editor-in-Chief The annual Dance Company B show, as usual, was a success! It was different to take a seat as a viewer than to actually perform, but nonetheless, it did not disappoint. The performances included all fourteen members of different techniques within the twelve pieces. The show took place in its entirety Friday, January 22 in the Loyola theater. Ramblers were given a chance to see pieces of the performance during lunch periods for free. Tryouts occurred earlier in the school year when students were chosen to be a part of DCB. With several new performers, there was also officially a new moderator, Mr. B, here to replace the departure of Mrs. Rothwell. And additions to new management were captains, senior Lauren Pinderski, juniors Frannie VenaPedersen, Jessie Davies, and Sophia Brouwer. Throughout the fall, they worked hard together to create performances of various styles and elements. Also, having many new faces could sometimes bring tough times but that did not seem apparent in this group according to Vena-Pedersen, “It’s always fun getting to know all the new girls and working to create dances together.” Usually an increase in dances can be stressful but during those times it’s imperative to remember to have good times. One of these new dancers, freshman Joi Hunter, talked about the performance. She said, “It was fun, and I loved the variety of songs.” When asked about her experience in the group, Hunter added, “It’s like being a family while learning lots of genres and movements.” Besides new girls, also new

was the genre hip hop. VenaPedersen commented, “The company dance was something totally new for us since we have not done something hip hop based in the two years I’ve been a part of Company B.” Most audience members felt the performance was, as sophomore Ciara Joyce said, “very good and well put together. All the dancers were very into it and a lot of hard work was put into it.” Freshman Fiona Donnelly commented, “I thought the performance was very interesting. The dancers were very talented, and the choreography was very good.” When asked which dance was her favorite, freshman Natalie Huff said, “My favorite dance was ‘What do you Mean?’ because it had a lot of rhythm and the dance was eye catching. It spread out through the stage.” Donnelly chimed in that her favorite was, “‘Before She

Fell Asleep’ because I thought that the music, dancing, and costumes were very cool.” When asked about the difficult parts of the experience, Pinderski mentioned, “What was challenging was the increase in dances than last year and having to work extra hard in order to get them right.” I would have to admit, the hip hop was a big change, but one in the positive direction. Overall, the costumes, music, and lighting ranged differently from one another which are necessary to pull an interesting show together. A few pieces did stick out to me. The first was “Not About Angels” by Evelyn Benvenuto. The costumes were white, which is always a great color to emphasize angels. To make costumes shine, performances always need fantastic lighting. Thanks lighting designer, Kurt Ottinger, a background of white and red flashed

throughout and added to the feel of the dance. A great variety of groupings and pairings occurred within the dance. Another standout piece was a duet called “Before She Fell Asleep.” Many times, a duet can be difficult to not create much symmetry, but that didn’t seem a problem for choreographers and dancers Sophie Koehn and Laura Freehan. Together their performance conveyed a mother-daughter story line at a time where the daughter is dancing along her mother as she is trying to fall asleep. They did a great job of creating individual movements but then becoming one at sweet moments. During the whole time, they did an excellent job of using different levels and the entire stage. The last piece of the show was probably the most anticipated performance of the whole night. “There It is” by Mr. B himself, truthfully was a crowd pleaser. To anyone familiar

with the LA stage, you would think it would be challenging to fit all fourteen girls, but that did not seem to be an issue. With several groupings and tight formations, it was possible. At the start, the lighting was dark, creating suspense of what to come next. The costumes and music themselves added to the whole performance. It definitely did not disappoint. At the conclusion of the performance, Pinderski added, “It was all worth it in the end because we worked well together and we had a great performance. Credit really goes to Mr. B in his actions of doing a great job of coordinating everything. In general, we all were glad to have him join us this year.” If Company B was able to pull out their artistic side and wow the crowd, hopes can only be high for what LADC has for us in the spring.

Nothing rational seems to explain this lottery mania. The thrill of gambling can’t be the answer, going to Vegas would be a better bet, you might actually win something. Intuitively, we all know the long odds, but we each have the daydream that maybe we could maybe be the lucky one. (Although if you really need to make a quick billion, you should pick the lottery over trying for a perfect March Madness bracket.) Alumnus of the Month Sleepout Preview Patrick Tata Senior Writer Hello and welcome to a new article in the LA news known as Alumni of the Month. In this article, and articles to come, you the reader will be introduced to a Loyola alumnus who has taken the education and experience Loyola has given them to create his or her own future and live out the message men and women for others. This month’s edition: John Detjen For Loyola students, the future can be a daunting task. This is true in the past as much as it is in the present. For a successful entrepreneur, John Detjen shared that it was always the vision Loyola Academy breathed into him that made him feel supported. This support came partly from his brothers. Tommy Young Junior Writer Imagine you are walking home from a hard day of school, exhausted and chilled to the bone because your used coat has seen one too many winters. Instead of being able to kick back and relax on your couch and binge watch Netflix in the comfort of your own home, you have to do all of your homework in an unfamiliar room full of people you do not know. For dinner you are served an assortment of foods, ranging from stale bread to a thin soup that people were kind enough to donate. The commotion created by everyone else going about their business makes it hard for you to concentrate on your work. If only you could have some privacy! After you finish up your schoolwork, you prepare for bed by brushing your teeth with the toothbrush you carry in your small travel bag along with the a few other meager supplies. As you lay down in a bed that is not your own, you think about the hour long commute to school you will have to endure yet again when you wake up at five o’clock tomorrow morning. Records: The Vinyl Frontier

Tom Murphy LA News Editor Some say it sounds and feels better, others say that it is the way it was meant to be, and some just like the physical aspect. Regardless of the reason, it’s official; vinyl is making a comeback. Since 2014, record sales are up over 50%, and the business doesn’t seem to be slowing down any time soon. Even as streaming services like Spotify and iTunes Music grow in popularity, vinyl records are striking a chord with music lovers young and old alike. The massive boom in interest and sales in vinyl’s is rocking the music industry as presses struggle to keep up with the high demand. There are currently only twenty press-

ing plants in America, and there is not a single company building new pressing machines in the world. As companies look for alternatives, some factories are literally taking machines out of museums and putting them back to work. Part of the problem is that the newfound popularity of vinyl records is transcending genre and age. While bands like Led Zepplin and The Beatles still hold positions near the top of sales, modern artists are selling in large numbers as well. Adele’s latest album, 25, recently topped the charts before the late David Bowie’s Lazarus. Other artists like The Weekend, The Arcs, and Ed Sheeran are making efforts to release special edition records that come with all sorts of posters

and letters from the artists. As a lover of all things music, I just had to take part in the vinyl reawakening. I was originally drawn to the media simply by the idea. Being able to give a record a spin and turn up the stereo like I was in a John Hughes movie seemed effortlessly cool, but as I studied up about the system and the advantages, I knew the music was more than just visual. After a year of lobbying, I finally achieved my Christmas wish: an Audio Technica LP60 with dual speed action. Yes, I know I sound like Ralphie from A Christmas Story, but who cares? In order to complete my starter pack, I headed down to Reckless Records in Wicker Park to browse and buy. Flipping through the records and examining the

Many of the details the artist made sure to include are lost in translation when put on a screen. The satisfaction that comes with cutting the fresh

State of the State: Bruce Rauner’s Take Thompson Schweider Junior Writer Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner has now been leading the state for over one year. The state which has experienced a longstalled budget discord, teachers’ union imbroglios, and many other complex political standoffs. Rauner has been steadfast and adamant during legislative conversations with political opponents who are key leaders in the Illinois General Assembly. Additionally, the first-term governor often participated in heated exchanges with Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, fueling political divide throughout various levels of government within the state. Republican Bruce Rauner, aged 58, narrowly defeated Democratic incumbent Pat Quinn for the governorship in 2014, collecting 50.27 percent of the popular vote. Rauner is a first-time politician, with a resume empty of any public office. Having made millions as a private equity investor, Rauner acknowledges his wealth by declining a gubernatorial salary. Probably the most

striking political issue for the state of Illinois concerns the budget. One could make a case for the considerations of the budget’s actual content specific details. The state’s 2015 report card may not be pleasing for Gov. Bruce Rauner, but there is no time for mourning as work for the next three years has already begun.

El Chapo Reaches the End of the Line Gabriele Jule Junior Writer “El Chapo” formally known as Joaquin Guzmán was recaptured on January 8, 2016, at the Sinaloan Mountains of Mexico. After his second escape from the Altiplano prison in Mexico on July 16, 2015, left the Mexican government looking incompetent, the man hunt now included law enforcement from the United States as well. El Chapo’s safest location would be his hometown of Sinaloa where authorities were already speculating about any unusual movements. Mexican intelligence confirmed their suspicion with telephone intercepts and a large order of Mexican food at midnight. As soon as El Chapo heard the footsteps of the

Mexican marine, he went through a tunnel behind his closet mirror and escaped to the middle of a street with only his right hand man. From there, the drug lord stole a car that took him to a hotel, where he was eventually found and arrested. A very important factor leading to the recapture of El Chapo were the texts between him and the Mexican actress Kate del Castillo as well as a meeting in the Mexican jungle a few weeks before his arrest. The American actor Sean Penn was an acquaintance with El Chapo through Kate del Castillo and was also present at the meeting. Sean Penn wanted an interview with the infamous man for the magazine, The Rolling Stones, which he did accomplish, but later claimed that he had failed the article. The texts

and possible illicit money exchange between Kate del Castillo and El Chapo is being investigated because any money given to the Mexican actress could lead to jail time for herself. There is speculation that the meeting was requested by El Chapo for a possible movie about his life that would be directed by Kate del Castillo. El Chapo’s extradition to a prison in the United States is desired in various U.S. jurisdictions such as Chicago and San Diego. During his second capture in 2014, the United States government pleaded with the Mexican government for the extradition of the most wanted drug lord because he already escaped once from a Mexican prison. present state of the political system and expressed regret that the partisanship has gotten worse under his tenure. He also pushed back, issuing a call to reject politics of profiling and asserted America is respected for its diversity and openness, “‘We the People.’ Our Constitution begins with those three simple words, words we’ve come to recognize mean all the people, not just some.” Democracy is dependent on bonds of trust, Obama added, calling on the public to raise its level of participation, “To vote. To speak out. To stand up for others, especially the weak, especially the vulnerable, knowing that each of us is only here because somebody, somewhere, stood up for us.” Whatever the political reality, there is no question Obama’s strength lies in his speaking skills, but regretfully even a man of his talent struggled to break through to deliver the hope and change he promised. His Democratic party has suffered massive losses, majorities in both Houses in 2008 wiped out by a conservative backlash in two straight midterm elections. While Obama may have won twice nationally, Republicans quietly control thirty-one governorships and have gained over 900 seats in state legislatures since 2009, trouncing Democrats. All of this has hamstrung the President’s ability to score any major legislative victories in the past six

years, forcing a frustrated Obama to use executive orders to implement his policies, which ends up turning into a vicious cycle as Congress grows even more distrustful of him. These orders deal with issues from emissions to immigration and can easily be reversed, their survival, along with his signature health care act, depends on the election of a Democratic successor. On the other side of the aisle, the Republican response was condemnation, as predicted. Donald Trump tweeted, “The #SOTU speech is really boring, slow, lethargic - very hard to watch!” and at a debate a few days later Chris Christie remarked, “Tuesday night I watched story time with Barack Obama.” Speaker of the House Paul Ryan even reportedly practiced his

poker face to avoid showing any emotion on camera as he sat behind the President. With swathes of the electorate already wired in the 2016 contest (Iowa caucuses were on Monday), the speech will have largely been forgotten by a public with an increasingly short attention span. Obama is fighting against a ticking clock until he is reduced to lame duck status sometime around early summer; a hostile Congress is all too willing to push him out the door. No doubt the President knew he would be criticized for whatever he proposed, so instead he tried to appeal to the better nature of the American people, but the only response he received was the shotgun that denoted the start of the long slog to the next election.

Other memorable moments of the night included the Golden Globe presentation between Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Schumer. The A-list best friends combined their humor for a brief yet hilarious presentation. The two were both nominated for Best Actress in a leading role, Jennifer for Joy and Amy for Trainwreck. JLaw came out on top, but there was nothing but laughs between the pair. As for the host of the Globes, Ricky Gervais, there were mixed reviews about his performance due to his awkward and controversial humor. Other big winners of the night includ-

ed Jon Hamm for Madmen, Brie Larson for Room, Matt Damon for The Martian, and Sylvester Stallone for Creed. Oscar nominations are out and the buzz has begun, who will be the big winners? This year’s Oscars are already making headlines due to the lack of diversity within the nominations. Several prominent African American actors, such as Jada Pinkett Smith, are planning on boycotting the Oscars, and they are urging Chris Rock to not host. This controversy has cast a shadow over the night so far, but only time will tell which stars will shine at the 88th Academy Awards. For more information on the Oscars, check out the Prep’s article on nominations and predictions for the big night.

Speculations on Oscar Nominations Colleen Elliott Junior Writer “I’m king of the world!” said Leonardo DiCaprio in Titanic. Will he be “king of the Oscars” this year and finally win best actor for The Revenant? Will Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky bring home the gold after thirtyeight years without a nomination? Hollywood’s award season is in full swing it’s time to get ready for the Oscars. Of course it wouldn’t be a Hollywood awards show without controversy, namely not a single person of color nominated in any of the big categories. Will host Chris Rock address the diversity issue? Tune in to ABC on February 28 to find out. Here are some this year’s nominations: Best Picture - Bridge of Spies, a movie about US efforts to recover an American from the USSR during the Cold War, directed by Steven Spielberg. Brooklyn, a story of a young Irish immigrant coming to America and finding love and herself in New York, directed by John Crowley. Mad Max: Fury Road, a reboot of a classic in a dystopian future in which women are commodities to be bought and sold, directed

The Martian, the efforts of one man to survive on Mars after being left for dead by his crew, directed by Ridley Scott. The Revenant, a movie loosely based on the true story the traditional American hero in the wilderness, directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu. Spotlight, a dramatic and heart-wrenching story of one man’s efforts to reveal the cover-up of church scandal, directed by Tom McCarthy. Last is Room, the harrowing tale of a woman kept captive in a room for fourteen years and its aftermath, directed by Lenny Abrahamson. Directing- Adam McKay for The Big Short, Lenny Abrahamson for Room, Tom McCarthy for Spotlight, George Miller for Mad Max: Fury Road, and Alejandro González Iñárritu for The Revenant. Hollywood insiders obviously have their favorites and upsets. Here are a few to keep an eye on. The Revenant is a favorite for Best

Picture, but Spotlight could snatch it away. Many predict this will be the year DiCaprio wins for best actor, unless Michael Fassbender of Steve Jobs has something to say. As impossible as it is to believe, Stallone is the favorite for Best Supporting actor, but something The Revenant will clean up and Tom Hardy will win the award. With all the drama, glamour, and star power, it’s sure to be an entertaining evening. So be sure to tune in for this year’s biggest night in Hollywood, The Oscars.

Hollywood insiders believe The Revenant will walk away with an armful of Oscars this year, perhaps even snapping DiCaprio’s streak of Oscar losses. Photo Courtesy AP

Star Wars: The Franchise Awakens Neil Gorman Sophomore Writer Movie: Star Wars: The Force Awakens Director: J.J Abrams Cast: John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Harrison Ford Genre: Sci-fi/Fantasy Star Wars is back! Finally, after years of waiting, the seventh installment in the worlds’ most popular movie franchise has been released. In the months leading up to its release, Star Wars took over the world. You could not go anywhere or watch anything without seeing something Star Wars related. The Gmail loading bar became a light saber, stores sold Star Wars themed cereal, soup and spice shakers. And don’t forget about the movie trailers and TV spots. J.J Abrams has done an excellent job bringing the franchise back its former glory. Since the movie was released in December, The

Force Awakens has become one of the highest grossing films of all time, and for good reason. The total production value of the movie was approximately $201 million, and it made $517 million during its opening weekend alone. The Force Awakens does a fantastic job of mixing the old in with the new. The film

features returning characters such as Han Solo (Harrison Ford), and Princess Leia (Carrie Fischer). However, the spotlight focuses more on the story of Finn and Rey, played by John Boyega and Daisy Ridley, respectively. Adam Driver does an impressive job of portraying Kylo Ren, the new villain. Another very positive

note is the film’s limitations on special effects, much like the original trilogy. CGI (computer generated images) are used only when necessary (such as space battles, etc.) The use of real sets and props make the movie look much more realistic, which is a huge plus. However, there were a few shortcomings in the film.

What many may view as the film’s greatest strength may also be considered its primary weakness, this being the number of parallels to the original Star Wars. For example, the Starkiller base is eerily similar to the Death Star, and a main character, Rey, starts out as a nobody on a desert planet, just as Luke Skywalker did. There were numerous times during the movie that I felt that I was watching an updated version of A New Hope. Another issue that I found with the film is that for the most part, fate seems to be what moves the story along, as opposed to the characters’ actions. Despite these shortcomings, I found The Force Awakens to be a fun and exciting adventure, so much so that I saw the movie more than once. Star Wars: The Force Awakens has done an excellent job rebooting the franchise, and I personally cannot wait for episodes eight and nine.

David Bowie: To Stardust He Returns Riley Harwood Junior Writer On January 10, 2016, a legend finally transcended his earthly bonds. While the man was formally known as David Bowie, the legend’s friends and fans knew him as Major Tom, Ziggy Stardust, the Thin White Duke, or any other of the number of identities that the rock god embodied throughout his career. Someone unfamiliar with David Bowie’s music has a

hard time discerning the myth from the man, and that’s a grand part of the beauty. Bowie can’t be easily explained to the layman, in part, because there is no modern, or future for that matter, equivalency. “But what about current stars?” When is the last time Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, or any pop icon took a real, deliberate risk? Modern pop stars berate us with sentiments that we should just “be ourselves.” When has either of the aforementioned artists ever actually been genuine or vulner-

able with the general public? Born David Robert Jones in a blue-collar class suburb of London, Bowie cultivated an unequivocally unique style and persona that has in one way or another influenced every modern pop artist. A young David Bowie first gained notoriety in London when he released “Space Oddity” days before the historic launch of the Apollo 11 space shuttle. Bowie only gained worldwide prominence with the release of The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars and concurrent spawning of persona Ziggy Stardust. Stardust was Bowie and Bowie was Stardust. “Offstage I’m a robot. Onstage I achieve emotion. It’s probably why I prefer dressing up as Ziggy to being David,” Bowie justifies in his own words. From Ziggy Stardust, Bowie skipped from hit to hit, all the while transforming style and image to predict the next trend. The grand misconception surrounding this maverick of a man is that he was an adaptor. The truth is so far from the idea of Bowie as a struggling survivor. An outsider might compare David Bowie to a chameleon, changing skin to fit the wall of popular music. On the

contrary, David Bowie was the warping wall five steps ahead of the crashing curve and the rest of popular culture were impressionable chameleons. Music is a product of its environment. David Bowie was the environment, and music was his product. The sheer vision that the man possessed allowed him to anticipate trends often decades before the trends were common practice in music. David Bowie ran his own Bowie-themed internet service provider, dubbed “BowieNet,” before the existence of Google. BowieNet is a single example out of dozens of musical innovations years before their time. But how does an unparalleled, androgynous, God of another dimension perish? At home, surrounded by family, and at the hands of cancer no less. David courageously fought liver cancer for eighteen months. The artist’s illness was kept a very private matter. Bowie’s final pre-mortem work, Blackstar, details mortality and death. In fact, the depth and minutia in which Bowie describes death in Blackstar leaves fans and critics feeling almost bamboozled that they didn’t see the inevitable coming. Blackstar was released on

January 8, 2016, David Bowie’s birthday and two days before his death. And, gosh dangit, the 69 year old, carcinogenic, prophetic idol is still so fresh. Despite initial lackluster reviews, the record has imploded following Bowie’s unfortunate demise. David Bowie notoriously preceded the course of popular culture. When the fervor of hype surrounding Bowie started to disappear, so did Bowie. David Bowie transformed into a virtual recluse in the final years of his life. Bowie’s family’s secrecy shrouding the star’s sickness was a dual effort to maintain privacy and let Bowie’s final work of art stands alone. For better or worse, the consumers seem to have garnered the last laugh. Widely as a result of Bowie’s departure, Blackstar sits atop Billboard’s Top 200 Album List. The rest of David Bowie’s other work has spurted to the top of the charts in a similar fashion. As an awe-stricken fan of the legend and the man myself, I can confidently say David is up there among the cosmos, but I suppose he always was. Can you hear me, Major Tom? Can you hear me, Major Tom? Can you hear me?

Mad Max Causes Fury Over Gender Roles Julieanne Montaquila Junior Writer

The trailer for Mad Max: Fury Road looks like a vision a hard-core biker had in the middle of the Sahara after the second day without water. The number of car crashes, skeletons, explosions, and absolutely insane people in this movie is enough to sear your eyes out of their sockets. What I’m saying is, Mad Max: Fury Road is fabulous. Why then, even after being nominated for the Golden Globes and winning movie of the year, is the film shrouded in controversy? I quoth the “meninists:” “This is the Trojan Horse feminists and Hollywood leftists will use to (vainly) insist on the trope women are equal to men in all things, including physique, strength, and logic. And this is the subterfuge they will use to blur the lines between masculinity and femininity, further ruining women for men, and men for women” (Aaron Clarey). Oh, Lord, no. The feminists are invading with their insane ideas of equality of the sexes. But is Clarey right in some ways? Is Mad Max: Fury Road empowering to women? Let’s rewind and look at the plot. Warning: plenty of spoilers included. This movie opens in a postapocalyptic desert land. Mad Max himself (Tom Hardy), the gravellyvoiced hero of the movie series, is taken prisoner by a warlord named Joe who uses his water supply and War Boys, an army of brain-washed creeps painted like skeletons, to hold power over everyone. Max, being a universal donor, is used as a “blood bag” for a sick War Boy, Nux. Furiosa (Charlize Theron) works for Joe, or at least she used to, until she stole

his “wives” (sex slaves is more appropriate) to liberate them from his tyranny. When Furiosa deviates from her course, it doesn’t take long for them to notice and chase her down in trucks made of what look like a mash of scavenged cars and semis. The group narrowly escapes for the first time, adding on Mad Max himself and Nux. They continue to be chased across the wasteland, Furiosa the clear leader. They head towards the land she was kidnapped from as a child, in search of “the Green Place” and refuge. To summarize a LOT, they discover “the Green Place” is uninhabitable and must turn back to Joe’s Citadel. After another bout of exploding vehicles and crazy skeletons, Joe is killed and Furiosa, Max, and the wives return to the Citadel where the people accept them and the death of Joe happily. Mad Max walks away, unnoticed by the crowd, the lone wolf once again. I won’t give too much else away except to say there was a skeleton-man playing a flaming electric guitar as he stood on the front of one of the pursuing vehicles. So that was strange. Anyway, something

Mad Max, played by Tom Hardy, teams up with Furiosa, played by Charlize Theron, to both play the role of the hero in this gender bending film. Photo Courtesy AP

major that Clarey touches on in his long and offensive blog was this: Fury Road is an intense, explosion-ridden, weapon-infested, action-thriller…. with a female lead. The complaint that Mad Max wasn’t the star of a movie called Mad Max in a series about himself may be valid, especially to his old fans, but shouldn’t the ridicule stop there? Is it really so crazy for a woman (Furiosa) to play the lead in an action-thriller like this? Historically, yes. For a long time movies like the Mad Max series have been designed to target men as well as the gender stereotypes that surround them. Guns and cars are for boys and dresses and

makeup are for girls. So now the big question: Is this criticallyacclaimed movie empowering to women? I encourage you to see the movie for yourself to better understand the following arguments. Let’s start with Joe’s wives. One of the opening scenes is him tearing apart the room where he keeps them, finding only a maid and the words, “We are NOT things,” and “Our babies will not be made warlords,” painted on the walls. If that doesn’t send a message then you’re probably illiterate. Joe uses the wives to breed children, or specifically sons, to rear in his image. Furiosa stows them away

in her semi, intending to find her home and free them. Throughout the intense battles, she must act as a fearless leader, swerving through their pursuers, returning gunfire, and keeping her comrades safe. At one point, she snipes a dude using Max’s shoulder to rest the gun on. Clarey just cried a little in the recesses of his parents’ basement. One of the ultimate factors that made the film empowering to women was that it mixed the roles of the old hero, Max, with Furiosa’s, without drawing distinctions in their abilities based on gender. I was worried, after seeing the trailer, that the wives would be passive damsels-in-distress, but this was not the case. Fully entrenched in the fighting, they help overtake Joe and one of his sons in the final battle. Maybe the best way Mad Max: Fury Road was empowering to women was that it was absolutely awesome, proving that these kinds of action-thrillers are certainly great, if not better, when they break these stereotypes and include strong female characters. If anything, see the movie for the guy standing on the hood of a war truck playing a flaming electric guitar.

Listen up Directioners! And yes, that means you because whether you’ll admit it or not, everyone reading this knows deep down 1D is their go-to guilty pleasure. Like I always say, life’s too short to pretend you don’t like catchy One Direction songs. Now, I know everyone has been secretly whispering about the boyband rumors of a possible breakup when a heartless source came out a couple weeks ago saying the band was officially over; however this has been confirmed by a hopefully more reliable source to be false so we can all take a sigh of relief. Speaking of which, former member Zayn Malik will be coming out with his debut album Fader in 2016. Yes, Zayn might be the one to blame for initiating the band’s downhill spiral, but he sure is easy on the eyes. Brady vs. Manning - The Ultimate Rivalry Brady Reichert Freshman Writer

By the time you are reading this article Sunday’s playoff game will be in the record books and another chapter in the largest rivalry in the NFL will have been written. This is a rivalry that was born September 30, 2001, when a rock star quarterback from Tennes-

politely introduce himself as “Peyton.” You probably guessed by now, the rivalry is between Peyton Manning and Tom Brady. To date, it has spanned fifteen years and sixteen contests. So far Brady’s team, the New England Patriots, have lead Manning’s teams (the Indianapolis Colts and Denver Broncos) with an overall 11-5 record. However, their record is 2-2 in the

see, the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft, walked across to the opposing side of the field to a second string quarterback, picked in the sixth round of the NFL draft, and

post season. While some say Brady’s 11-5 record should instill confidence in his expectations for this weekend’s game, there is an important psychologi-

cal piece of the puzzle that continues to haunt Brady. That piece is that if you add Eli Manning’s (Peyton’s younger brother and quarterback of the New York Giants) 2-0 record of Super Bowl wins over Brady’s Patriots; the Manning family’s post-season record is 4-2 over Brady’s Patriots. The most interesting part of this rivalry and what makes it so special is the professionalism and respect that surrounds it. While the two are not best friends they have been known to regularly keep in touch thru texting and dinner meetings. Their friendship and support has encouraged one another thru career stifling injuries and rehab. However this last summer their rivalry took on a new chapter as the NFL began releasing Brady’s private emails surrounding “Deflate Gate.” The NFL issued a controversial ruling where Brady was accused of manipulating the air pressure in game balls. These emails revealed Brady’s view of his rivalry with Manning.

Manning and Brady, both team leaders, have faced each other an incredible seventeen times. Photo Courtesy AP

While the emails were not of mean spirit, they clearly stated Brady’s opinion that Manning should be retiring even though he still had many years left to play. This was like throwing fuel on the competitive fire for Manning. While he accepted and defused an apology from Brady, he approached and competed throughout this season as though he always knew he was going to start in the Super Bowl. This was no small feat for Manning and

the fact that he is starting this weekend, after missing a quarter of the season from lingering foot and rib injuries, shows the incredible intensity of this rivalry. No one can predict if this will be the final chapter in this competitive rivalry, but one thing we know for sure is the two champions will leave it all out on the field on Sunday. I hope you enjoyed the game and hopefully the quarterback you were rooting for prevailed.

The Saint Louis Rams are the Los Angeles Rams yet again. After twentyone years, this NFL franchise will be moving back to Los Angeles, California, which they had previously called home from 1946 to 1995. The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum will be serving as their temporary home field until their new stadium is ready in 2019. When the votes were cast to decide on this matter, thirty out of the thirtytwo NFL owners approved of the Ram’s move to Los Angeles. The owner of the Rams, Stan Kroenke, made the request to seek relocation for financial purposes after multiple attempts failed to find a sustainable profit in Saint Louis, Missouri.

tunity, both teams would be rewarded by the NFL if they decided to stay in their present markets. They have each been offered $100 million if they have plans done within a year for a new stadium in their current locations. Though a deal has been worked out for the Rams, this move to Los Angeles is far from over.

Los Angeles fans begged for their team to be returned to them after a twenty year stint in St. Louis. Photo Courtesy AP

The new stadium, which is currently being built, will replace the old Hollywood Park racetrack in Inglewood, California. This location is ten miles from downtown Los Angeles and just four miles from the Los Angeles International Airport. This massive facility, measured at almost three hundred acres,

is intended to be a location that will host many high profile games, including the Super Bowl. The cost of this stadium is going to total over two billion dollars, but will prove to be helpful in producing an immense amount of revenue. Along with numerous other moving expenses the Rams are facing, the NFL

St. Louis fans show their support for their home team. An effort that was ultimately futile. Photo Courtesy AP

Cam Newton celebrates another MVP like performance on his way to face the Denver Broncos, led by future Hall of Famer Peyton Manning, in Super Bowl 50. Photo Courtesy AP

The Golden Anniversary Robby Starr Sophomore Writer After three weeks of exciting, sometimes heartstopping football, it’s future Hall of Famer Peyton Manning and the Broncos defense versus upstart Cam Newton and the 15-1 Carolina Panthers in Super Bowl 50 on Sunday, February 7. Before we preview the upcoming Super Bowl, let’s recap how the NFL playoffs unfolded. Things started with all four lower seeded teams winning for the first time ever on Wildcard Weekend. Two teams won handily, with Alex Smith and a stalwart Chiefs defense leading Kansas City to a 30-0 victory over the Houston Texans. The Texans defense was slowed down by Smith’s combination of running and throwing, along with injuries to All-Pro JJ Watt. The Green Back Packers also took care of the Redskins 35-18. Two games ended with heartbreak that weekend. The Cincinnati Bengals fumbled the ball with the lead in the last two minutes, and then committed two penalties on defense to hand the game to the Pittsburgh Steelers, 18-16. The next day, the Minnesota Vikings trustworthy kicker Blair Walsh

lined up for a chip shot game ending field goal to send the Seattle Seahawks to a long off-season. Somehow Walsh missed the easy kick, and the Seahawks won 10-9. The next weekend brought on the divisional playoffs and four exciting games. The dynastic New England Patriots beat the Chiefs 27-20. Superstar quarterback Tom Brady had receivers Gronkowski and Edelman back and was virtually unstoppable. In the other AFC matchup, Peyton Manning came back from injuries and did just enough to lead the Broncos to an 18-16 win over the Steelers. On the NFC side, the Carolina Panthers got out to a 31-0 lead against the Seahawks and hung on to win 31-24. The other game saw QB Aaron Rodgers pull off a Hail Mary miracle to force overtime, before the Arizona Cardinals hung on for a 26-20 win. Carson Palmer connected with favorite receiver Larry Fitzgerald in overtime for the victory. This weekend’s AFC Championship game highlighted one of the best alltime NFL Quarterback rivalries: Peyton Manning vs. Tom Brady. However, the stars of this game were the team’s defenses. The game featured many quarterback sacks,

interceptions and hurried throws. In a thrilling finish, the Patriots scored on a fourth down play in the game’s final minute, but then were unable to capitalize on a two-point conversion and lost 20-18. This will be the fourth trip to the Super Bowl for Peyton Manning in a storied career. The NFC Championship game saw the Carolina Panthers get out to a sizeable lead for the second week in a row. This time however, Cam Newton, Ted Ginn Jr. and the Panthers defense overpowered the Cardinals. The Panthers won handily 49-15. Carolina is the expected favorite in the Super Bowl. After a near undefeated season, they were the darlings of the NFL this year. But let’s not count out the Broncos defense, which is best in the NFL, and Peyton Manning, arguably the best quarterback ever. Can Cam Newton run the read option to perfection, and hold off the Broncos pass rush? Will Manning put the Broncos in a position to score against a Panthers defense, which also has an efficient rush game, but is susceptible to big plays in the secondary? This promises to be a game worth watching for more than just the Beyoncé and Coldplay halftime show!
