2021-22 Pre-Registration & Registration Students will meet with their counselors in early March to discuss the various course options available. An in-depth description of every Loyola course can be found in the 2021-22 course catalog published on the school website (Feb 16, 2021) under the Academics tab. Furthermore, short videos from each Academic Department Chair, videos explaining every AP and Honors course, and various video tutorials for how and when to register can also be found on the site. Students should review the course catalog, and videos, before meeting with their counselors in early March to pre-register. Students should pre-register online via PowerSchool for all courses in which they would like to be considered for enrollment. Preregistration does not guarantee enrollment, but rather serves as a tool for analyzing AP and Honors requests as well as providing valuable insight for building the academic course "master grid". In April, students will be notified if they have been accepted into Honors and AP courses via Canvas. After acceptance notices are delivered students will be invited to formally register for classes in PowerSchool. Petitions for reconsideration for Honors and AP courses will be available on an online form after notices are delivered. Academic schedules will be finalized and posted to PowerSchool by early July. Course changes are rare after schedules are posted. A course change request form will be made available in early August.

Advanced Placement & Honors Courses Loyola High School offers a wide range of Advanced Placement (AP) and Honors courses across six academic departments. These courses are designed to challenge students who have shown a high level of aptitude and a strong desire to work harder and accomplish more in particular subjects. Students should expect a workload at least double that of a regular college prep course and should also expect to be held to much higher standards of performance. It is highly recommended that students limit the number of AP and Honors courses to ensure a healthy balance of academic rigor along with their many extracurricular commitments. Every Loyola student is eligible to apply for entrance into AP and Honors courses. The admissions process into these courses is highly competitive and only students who have demonstrated the highest aptitude, most consistent performance, and a heartfelt desire to excel will be admitted. It is important to note that Loyola does not "track" students. For example, students enrolled in Honors math during the sophomore year must still proceed through the admissions process for junior level AP and Honors math courses. Likewise, students in college prep classes have opportunities to move into more rigorous courses each year if their performance and attitude merit an advance. The process for admissions into AP and Honors courses is highly structured and deliberate. Students and parents should regularly view the school's online calendar as well as daily announcements to remain abreast of meetings, deadlines, and notices. They should also watch Department Chair videos, read course descriptions, and watch course videos posted in the course catalog on the school's website. Loyola grades AP and Honors classes on a 5.0 GPA scale. However, not all of these courses are given such a boost by universities. Families should ask their counselor and/or contact these higher institutions directly to learn more about specific policies.
