How often do you see people who are great at their job, get promoted and then struggle? In my experience, quite a lot. The trouble is that the skills, attributes and qualities to being a good manager are a whole lot different to being the person doing the job. So what are my top tips? Tip 1: Acknowledge that you are there on merit Someone did not decide to promote you into the management post because they wanted to be nice. They gave you that chance because they saw the potential in you. If someone else has seen the potential, it's okay for you to acknowledge this. Tip 2: Accept that you will make mistakes No-one, no matter who you are, gets it 100% right all of the time. In fact, if you look at people who are really successful, you will see that a high number of them had huge setbacks along the way. Cut yourself some slack and accept that you will make mistakes. Tip 3: Pay attention to supporting your team No-one in my experience comes to work with the intention of doing a bad job. At the same time, if people feel that you are not in the slightest bit interested in them, they will switch off. When they switch off, performance drops, which is bad news for you and the organisation. Tip 4: Learn to listen The best managers understand the value of listening. They know and are comfortable with the fact that they don't need to be the fountain of all knowledge. Different people bring different experiences. It's the diversity of experiences that lead to better results. Tip 5: Make it a priority Managing is your core note, so make it a priority rather than something that you do as an afterthought or when you have nothing else to do. The Bottom Line: Simple changes make big differences in your success as a manager.
