A healthy dose of gratitude As I’m getting older, I see more and more the value of public libraries and how grateful I am that they exist because of their unique ability to meet our needs at every stage and transition in life. As kids, we ransack the picture books and learn to read bigger books. As adults, whenever we need to know something, find some inspiration, or even just relax with a page-turner, the public library is there, full of ideas just waiting for you. And now, as a new parent, I have the pleasure of seeing our toddler — books in hand (or mouth!) — starting her journey as a reader and watching the cycle begin again. It’s gotten me thinking lately about how important it is to say thanks, not only for the good vibes it sends outward, but because of what it does for the self as well. The physical act of contemplating what you’re grateful for (as a practice) is scientifically proven to have physical and mental health benefits. It helps us deal with adversity, increases our positive emotions, and builds stronger relationships. As we head into the season commonly known for gratitude, I want to acknowledge all the

amazing library staff I get to work with every day. I also have tremendous appreciation for our volunteers and donors who make it possible to go above and beyond for our community. And finally, to everyone who uses the library, comes to our programs, shares excitement for what we do, brings family in to tour our beautiful building, and keeps the cycle of library love going, we are so grateful to be your public library.

PS — Thank you to all who shopped and volunteered at the Friends Fall Booksale. You helped them raise a whopping $22,780 for the library! THE READER • 3

Staff Picks: Best of 2019 Becky

Joel

What It Is by Hayes Carll Nice range of listening here: honky tonk, samba, and full-on country/soul. Catchy with serious, scathing, and sly lyrics.

When We Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? by Billie Eilish An impressive album, but even more so when you consider the production was handled entirely by 17-year-old Eilish and her brother Finneas. The songwriting is simple, effective, and haunting — a wonderful breath of fresh air in the pop music genre.

If Beale Street Could Talk Although the setting for the movie matches the year well (1974), the story could've been ripped from today’s headlines. Powerful, beautiful, and devastating.

Erica Father of the Bride by Vampire Weekend Playful with smart lyrics and catchy tunes. Still one of my go-to bands for running or relaxing. Booksmart Watching this while eating takeout is quite dangerous as you’ll risk laugh-inhaling food. A one-of-a-kind film to watch over and over.

Ian Purple Mountains by Purple Mountains Self-deprecating, sweet, hilarious, heartbreaking, and fits in with the best Silver Jews offerings. In light of Dave Berman’s death, songs like “Maybe I’m the Only One For Me” emotionally devastate while managing to nail the perfect mix of honky tonk and indie rock. RIP, Dave. Atlanta Millionaire’s Club by Faye Webster I guess country / R&B / indie pop mashups aren’t as rare as they once were, but Faye Webster’s “AMC” is the most pleasantly unique album I heard in 2019. Melancholy and hypnotic, but never self-absorbed or dull. “AMC” keeps growing on me.

Ilka Dead Don’t Die A hilarious, gory romp with the undead through the eyes of director Jim Jarmusch. Wit and sardonic humor abound with a unique cast ranging from Bill Murray to Selena Gomez to Danny Glover. Good Omens Angel Aziraphale and demon Crowley work together to save the world as the end is nigh. So brilliantly written and executed are Neil Gaiman’s and Terry Pratchett’s words that the only end you’ll worry about is waiting for Season 2!

Kevin Fongola by KOKOKO! This sounds like a sentient techno junkyard throwing a dance party that everyone wants to go to. Twangy improvised strings and typewriter snares, backed by a deep synthesizer hum and raw vocals, demand sweaty party-goers to shake their asses.

Traci Yesterday A mysterious global blackout erases The Beatles from history. After a simultaneous bus accident, a floundering musician is the only person who remembers them. Performing their songs, he quickly becomes a rock star in this fun, charming movie.

Tricia The Farewell A poignant film that offers insight into the internal conflict often experienced by first-generation immigrants, in this case a young Chinese-American aspiring writer. I loved this window into Chinese culture, where community and family-centered values contrast sharply with American-style individualism. Country Music You know Loretta, Patsy, Johnny, and Hank, but there’s more to the country music story and Ken Burns is happy to school you. Even if you’re not a fan of the genre, you'll take away a deep appreciation for country's rich, complex heritage.

William Stranger Songs by Ingrid Michaelson This album inspired by Stranger Things offers a hint of the 80s with meaningful lyrics and refrains that get stuck in your head. Pop at its best. The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening The newly colorful Koholint Island is filled with fascinating, familiar creatures and friendly residents on a quest for eight magical instruments that will wake the legendary Wind Fish. I was OBSESSED with the original Game Boy version as a kid and this reimagining has blown my mind! THE READER • 5

RESOURCE | lplks.org/browse_program/sound-vision

Bringing vision into focus by Joel Bonner, Technology Assistant

For many would-be recording musicians, access to tools like these is simply out of reach. It's a wall the SOUND+VISION Studio aims to break down. RICH WITH ENTHUSIASM, BUT NOT THE FUNDS? The SOUND+VISION Studio is a complete and professionallyequipped creative space that contains everything a musician needs to record and produce an album, a music video, take band photos, design cover art, a logo, and tour merchandise. It includes a recording studio, video space, and three private rooms outfitted with iMacs and Adobe Creative Suite software. We can suggest a local engineer if you’re maxed out doing it all yourself and need professional production help with affordable hourly rates.

"When the students are in town, there's a population of about 90,000, and 100,000 of them play guitar. Hyperbolic, yes, but illustrative of Lawrence’s rich creative undercurrent." —Joel

Nestled away on the library's lower level is a remarkable creative resource unlike any other in the midwest as far as public spaces go. For a town teeming with musical creativity (and often a modest budget), the SOUND +VISION Studio can feel for some like hitting the lottery. Though plentiful, Lawrence’s musical talent can be a tough network to navigate if musicians aren’t privy to places that other musicians gather and 6 • LAWRENCE PUBLIC LIBRARY

have no recorded material to share. The scene's even harder to access for anyone below the legal drinking age as bars, live music venues, and typical networking hangouts don't allow entry. Financial commitment can be sizeable as well. Recording a quality album can mean hiring a professional studio and its engineers. You'll need a humble rig of bare essentials including microphones, audio interface, a computer, and instruments.

If you’re a beginner starting from scratch, you can watch and learn from hundreds of coursestructured software tutorials on our website to get the most out of your studio time. The studio can handle pretty much whatever you throw at it: Nine-piece Salsa band? Check. Award-winning podcast? Yep. Beat production accompanied by vocals? Recording stories for richer family genealogy? Yep, done, check. The SOUND+VISION Studio has it all. Access professional recording equipment, learning and skill-building resources, and a supportive, enthusiastic community — all with a free library card.

"I never knew I had access to other people who wanted to do music, too. You meet people you never knew were around here." Local rapper Marcel Zachary, a frequent user of the SOUND +VISION studio, discovered an enormous sense of community comes with the space.

Marcel Zachary AKA

Speedmack

Zachary is often spotted with good friends and local music peers here, some of whom he met while using the space. They can knock out quite a few songs in one 3-hour session. He feels the studio, coupled with sites like YouTube, helps artists connect, lift each other up, and find an audience. “If more artists worked near each other, we could connect the dots better.”

George and Margie

in "Margie's Room" at Lawrence Public Library 10 • LAWRENCE PUBLIC LIBRARY

FRIENDS + FOUNDATION

"Hot damn! The library got something out of this." by Cathy Hamilton, Legacy Coordinator George Coggins loved the law. He loved his wife, Margie. And he loved Lawrence Public Library. Just not necessarily in that order. George, a KU professor by way of Central Michigan University undergrad (football scholarship) and University of Michigan Law school, once said “his curse was making good grades while being a total screw-up. "It's no doubt that reading had something to do with his success. “He was the most voracious reader I’ve ever known,” Margie says. “As stories come in (after his death in August) several of my friends remember going on trips with him and, even when he’d pump gas, he was always reading a book. "He was an active patron at the library and worked as a cashier at the books sales the last three or four years. We always joked when he’d come home with two or three shopping bags full of

books. We’d ask, ‘What’d you do? Buy back the books you donated to them?’“ Because Margie had become a board member of the Library Foundation, working to build the new facility, George was willingly dragged along. “As a surprise, just before the library re-opened, he secretly dedicated one of the children’s study rooms to me,” Margie remembers. “The kids were in town — I thought for Mother’s Day — but I didn’t know the real reason they came. George had secretly arranged a private tour for all of us and when we came to the little cubicle, there was a handwritten sign saying “Margie’s Room.” George’s memorial gifts will help the library meet needs that the Coggins family and library staff evaluate and see fit. “The role the library plays in

this community was important to George,” Margie says. “Together, we felt that of all the charities — and we try to focus on local ones — the most important thing was that the library is available to everyone. It didn't just focus on one part of our community. That had great appeal to him. He loved the vital role that it plays.” Margie laughs. “I was just telling the kids that every time I write a thank you note to someone who's given a kind contribution in George’s name, I can hear George say, “Hot damn! The library got something out of this.”

RESOURCE

Library mission accomplished: How I learned, connected, created — and grew a baby! by Lauren Taylor, Children's Librarian For someone who's grown up with a phone in their pocket, constant access to Google, and is a frequent library-goer, it’s natural to want answers and help right away. When I found out I was pregnant, immediate panic set in. What does this mean?! What was happening to my body?! What does this mean for my life?! I needed answers.

Lpraegunancryepinck'ss

Luckily, as a children’s librarian I have a leg up. I’m around kids all the time, I know a bit about child development, and have access to every resource Lawrence Public Library 618.2 OSTER E has to offer: books and online learning tools, daily storytimes, and so much more. I don’t know what I would've done without this place. Pregnancy is a psychological war zone and an emotional journey paired with an insane physical toll. Not only are you growing a human, but you’re supposed to know things about said human. Sure, working here has given me access to a wealth of information on my pregnancy journey, but it has also connected me with a community experienced in childbirth and raising kids. I've gotten tons of valuable advice and knowledge from other parents. Patrons have given me toys, let me borrow books, and my colleagues threw me the most awesome — and sparkliest — baby shower. Lawrence Public Library may be made of wood, brick, and glass, but it's filled with a living, breathing community built to support and nurture everyone who needs it. If you’re feeling lost and alone on your journey to becoming a parent, we're here for you. I'm so thankful to have a hand in creating LPL's newest patron: my future library lover arrives in November!

The library offers so many services and programs now compared to when I started. There's crafts and yoga classes. You can fax and notarize documents for free. I never thought I would deal with seeds for the Seed Library and be in charge of the volunteers in our department. I enjoy helping patrons find what they need at the library and our wonderful staff. I can always find something I like to read, watch, and listen to.

The biggest change from when I first started is the addition of computers! One of my favorite things to do is match missing pieces with items that aren't returned with all of their parts. In 1983, I was listening to "Too Shy" by Kajagoogoo, "Stray Cat Strut" by The Stray Cats, "Rock the Casbah" by The Clash, and Def Leppard's "Photograph". My coworkers and all the people who come in are the best part of my job.

So many things have changed over the course of 40 years, but moving from a physical card catalog to the online card catalog was one of the biggest changes only for staff, but also for our patrons. As a former clerk, I typed headers onto the cards for the card catalog, typed check-out cards, and added pockets for each book. Now I catalog online and import the info into our system. I love so many things about working at LPL. I love cataloging — especially the new movies and music CDs because I get to see all the new stuff coming in — followed by having an endless supply of books. I never run out of things to read! The staff is pretty awesome, too!

Getting new items is so much easier and faster than when I started. We used to send our book orders via snail mail and phoned in 'rush' orders once a week. I never expected to spend so much time looking at spreadsheets! I love working at the library because our mission resonates with my own values — like reading and learning experiences — and the reward that comes from doing something personally meaningful.

I remember being really into music by female singer/songwriters and loved anything by Nanci Griffith or the Indigo Girls when I started here. What keeps me here? Well, a two-block commute is hard to beat, but truly, it's the staff. They're so great to work with. THE READER • 13

LPL BLOG | lplks.org/channel/lpl-blog

An ordinary life

by Polli Kenn, Readers' Services Coordinator

I first met author Amy Krouse Rosenthal while scrolling through social media. I tucked away her article “You May Want to Marry My Husband” for later, not yet realizing there wasn’t a later to be had. In fact, many people first met Amy through that New York Times article which was published on March 3, 2017.

I am also married to my own “Jason” (minus the socks). The idea of writing him a letter like this hollowed me out. Amy and I both had a deep and abiding love of words, books, people, and serendipity. The similarities, which would've been delightful under other circumstances, made me feel heartsick.

That was ten days before Amy died of ovarian cancer. She had written it as a love letter to her husband. When I met her again, through her obituary, I rushed back to find that article and read it with an aching wish to stop time, to bend it over on itself, to cancel it out and rewrite it.

Amy wrote many successful children’s books, but they were published when my kids were no longer reading picture books, so I didn’t get to know her that way. I felt like we missed each other at a party. The day after she died, I checked out her memoir, Encyclopedia of An Ordinary Life, published in 2005, and saw that it was noted as one of the ten most influential memoirs of the decade. She also has a second memoir, Textbook Amy Krouse Rosenthal, which was published in 2014.

“You May Want to Marry My Husband” left me sobbing and with a painful awareness of how much Amy and I had in common. We had both been married for 26 years. We each had three children with nearly the same age spread, hers just a few years older than mine. She had a husband who she loved, deep and true. This husband, Jason, is nearly a caricature of The Perfect Husband, but he does exist and he was hers: flipping pancakes, fixing things around the house, admiring her whimsy, wearing amazing socks.

14 • LAWRENCE PUBLIC LIBRARY

What I found in the Encyclopedia was a memoir like no other. This is not hyperbole. She includes orienting features and factual asides. Amy would like us to know the word coffee appears 23 times. Awkward, 6. Love, 78. She includes a timeline of events that chronicle authors, activities, happenstances, and preferences that lead her to write a memoircum-encyclopedia. The core

973.931 ROSENTHA (Available as a Book Club Kit, too!)

of the book is her alphabetized existence, starting with (of course) Amy and finishing with You. Of all the entries, most of which I read with the sadness and regret of knowing Amy was gone, You might have been the most poignant of them all. Encyclopedia works on a number of levels. If you like memoirs, it’s a unique take. If you avoid memoirs, please know it's devoid of navel-gazing and woe-is-me and humble-bragging. This is a different kind of memoir. Take her entry on Bowling: It would be difficult to convince me that leaning has no effect whatsoever on the outcome of my bowling. Or Gas Tank: Every. Single. Solitary. Time I go to get gas I have to lean out the window to

see which side the tank is on. These random entries collected from notes she made over years are specific to Amy and yet universal to us all. We chuckle in self-recognition and at the same time know a little bit more about this person. And then you read other entries. Distraction: I recognize that everything I do, from my work to going to the movies to raising children to vacuuming, might be viewed as just one big distraction — Hey, look over here! And now, over here! — from belaboring the real issue at hand: One day I’m going to die. Her words strike true and heavy with meaning. This is a book that I would've loved regardless of when I found it. I have an affinity for side-jogs, marginalia, and searches for meaning — all my boxes are ticked here. I love that several of the entries are cross-referenced and contain deep dives (Childhood Memories is a chronology: “1977 — Uses Nair for the first time".) I love that some of the entries are interactive, and she invites the reader to email her via her website. In one entry, she agrees to bake the 100th emailer a pie and mail it to them. I mourned no longer being able to create performance art with her through these books. Amy's artistry went beyond just writing. She made participatory and communitybased art. The Beckoning of Lovely is just, well, lovely. She also has multiple TEDx talks. In one, Amy and friends greet people exiting the subway at the end of their workday with posters and water, cheering on those running the Marathon of Life, literally and figuratively.

I am devastated by and have cried over Amy’s death, not because I knew her when she was alive (though I have the sketch of her in her open-hearted work), but because a light has gone out too soon. Those who spend their time here on earth productively, beautifully, with the goal of human connection and uplift? Those losses hit us the hardest. Amy lived a life I found so very familiar and I’m forced to face my mortality through hers. I wonder about my own life and what I’m creating. What is my Encyclopedia?

818.607 ROSENTHA

A unifying thread through Amy’s memoir and videos is meaning. Those little coincidences that we grasp and use to navigate our way through the waters of life. (I, like Amy, find meaning in things we both agree probably mean nothing, but we can’t stop looking for it.) My heart knows that I came upon this glorious, marvelous, ordinary person, one minute too late to have known her, for a reason. Maybe the simple fact that I need to find a reason, and now will do so, is good enough. In Judaism, when someone passes, we say, “May their memory be a blessing.” May Amy’s memory continue to bless us all. Originally published April 4, 2017

Meet KU Authors

WEDS | Jan 29, Feb 19 7-8:30 PM | AUD

In partnership with the Hall Center, KU scholars are coming to LPL. Our first two highlight dissidence during the American Revolution and the Civil War.

Jan 29 Richard Godbeer: World of Trouble Richard Godbeer is the Director of the Hall Center for the Humanities and Charles W. Battey Distinguished Professor of History at the University of Kansas. In his latest book,World of Trouble: A Philadelphia Quaker Family's Journey Through the American Revolution, Godbeer presents a richly layered and intimate account of the American Revolution as experienced by a Philadelphia Quaker couple, Elizabeth Drinker and the merchant Henry Drinker, who barely survived the unique perils that Quakers faced during the conflict. Spanning a half‑century before, during, and after the war, this gripping narrative illuminates the Revolution's darker side as many patriots THE READER • 23

vilified, threatened, and in some cases killed pacifist Quakers as alleged enemies of the revolutionary cause. Amid chaos and danger, the Drinkers tried as best as they could to keep their family and faith intact. Godbeer opens a window on a uniquely turbulent period of American history and the domestic, social, and religious lives of Quakers in the late eighteenth century, situating their experience in the context of transatlantic culture and trade. A master storyteller takes his readers on a moving journey they will never forget. Feb 19 Laura Mielke: Provocative Eloquence Laura Mielke is the Dean’s Professor of English at the University of Kansas and an award-winning teacher of American Literature from its beginnings through the early twentieth century. In her new book, Provocative Eloquence: Theater, Violence, and Antislavery Speech in the Antebellum United States, Mielke recounts how the theater, long an arena for heightened eloquence and physical contest, proved terribly relevant in the lead up to the Civil War. As tensions mounted over the future of slavery in the US, and as armed conflict spread from the slaveholding states to the Kansas territory, politicians and activists drew upon theatrical forms to make their arguments more compelling. Mielke explores a moment in American history when the intertwining of political debate and open conflict transformed the nation into a stage.

Author Kate Elizabeth Russell: My Dark Vanessa

WED | Feb 5 | 7-8:30 PM | AUD Kate Elizabeth Russell will talk about her stunning and much anticipated debut novel My Dark Vanessa, which follows Vanessa Wye as she grapples with sexual abuse allegations against a teacher with whom she had a relationship as a teen. Alternating between Vanessa's present and her past, My Dark Vanessa juxtaposes memory and trauma with the breathless excitement of a teenage girl discovering the power her own body can wield. Both thought-provoking and impossible to put down, it's a masterful portrayal of troubled adolescence and its repercussions, raising vital questions about agency, consent, complicity, and victimhood. The Raven will have copies of her book for purchase and a signing will follow her talk.

The Elizabeth Schultz Environmental Fund presents Angelou Ezeilo

Center for Civil and Human Rights’ Women in Solidarity Society and is on the boards of the Atlanta Audubon Society and the South Fork Conservancy. Engage, Connect, Protect: Empowering Diverse Youth as Environmental Leaders

HATE: Why We Should Resist It with Free Speech, Not Censorship

THU | Feb 20 | 7-8:30 PM | Liberty Hall 646 Mass Street While concern about the state of our land, air, and water continues to grow, there is widespread belief that environmental issues are primarily of interest to wealthy white communities. Engage, Connect, Protect explodes this myth, revealing the deep and abiding interest that African American, Latino, and Native American communities, many of whom live in degraded and polluted parts of the country have in our collective environment. Engage, Connect, Protect is a wake-up call for businesses, activists, educators, and policymakers to recognize the work of grassroots activists in diverse communities and create opportunities for engaging with diverse youth as the next generation of environmental stewards.

Nadine Strossen is a prominent lawyer and former president of the American Civil Liberties Union from 1991-2008, and currently a professor at NYU Law School. In her recently published book, HATE: Why We Should Resist It with Free Speech, Not Censorship, Strossen explores how speech is protected under the constitution and how free speech can be used to counter hate speech. With her expert knowledge of the Constitution, Strossen offers useful and applicable strategies for achieving positive outcomes without violating Constitutional rights. From government surveillance and drug decriminalization, to sexual harassment and more, Strossen makes complex issues accessible with statistics and illuminating true-life stories. Related event:
