We're here for you. I started my job at Lawrence Public Library eight years ago and I'm so proud of what our community has accomplished together. We are honored and humbled by the way you have embraced your public library and the group of humans who work here. And now, as I write this, the world has changed so dramatically, so quickly. In a desperately naive way, I want to pretend that we will snap back into place quickly and easily. However, we all know — at least for the near future — that things are going to be weird and worrisome for a while. We have to settle in, embrace our uncertainty, acknowledge our fear, and work together. We pledge to exercise a generous amount of caution as we welcome you back to the library. Thank you for continuing to be patient with us as we roll out services that match our need for safety for all involved. When I decided to try my hand at being a library director, I never imagined providing library service during a worldwide pandemic. Luckily, Lawrence has an amazingly creative and clever group of library staff who are dedicated to serving you. We will do our best for you while remaining committed to a safe reopening of our community. See you at the library (in a mask and from a distance)!

LPL ONLINE | NEW SERVICE

Kaw Valley Jukebox: Local music anywhere by Joel Bonner, LPL Tech Assistant The pandemic brought local music performances to a halt. Where once an enjoyable night out with live music was only a weekend (and most weeknights) away, now musicians and listeners are relying on digital platforms almost exclusively to share their art. While live performances are put on hold, Lawrence Public Library and its SOUND+VISION studio have created a way for you to access local music from any internet-connected device. Kaw Valley Jukebox (KVJB) is your pass to amazing local talent, and unlike at a live show, you’re not limited to just the artists on a single evening’s lineup. Any Lawrence musician from any point in time can be found here. KVJB is a free, local music time capsule. KVJB is a digital archive of vital local music history from Lawrence and surrounding areas. Nowhere else can one find content from area artists both contemporary and completely-lost-to-history. For some artists’ recordings, this is the only place they can be found anymore (save for maybe some forgotten tape and vinyl collections scattered across the land)! And what’s more, users can curate

6 • LAWRENCE PUBLIC LIBRARY

LISTEN NOW: music.lplks.org to their tastes with a "favoriting" feature just by entering their library card number. The sheer volume and quality of work to come out of our relatively small community is absolutely mind blowing. KVJB aims to be just as much a hub for Lawrence history nerds, music fans, and nostalgia junkies as it does to be a chance to show off the awesome, talented community of artists in the area. The collection will be ever-growing. Twice per year, local artists will have a chance to submit their recordings to KVJB. So musicians, get those recordings ready to go!

Help build the music archive. Do you know a local contact who might know some musicians of Lawrence's past? Is there a community of musicians you don’t see represented in the collection? If so, please reach out to them, or tell us so we can. We want to help preserve everything Lawrence has to offer! Reach out to us about anything at the email below.

FRIENDS & FOUNDATION | NOW MORE THAN EVER

As his illness progressed, he never really slowed down. He just rested more and relied more on eBooks. “He loved the fact that he could just sit at home and check out books to read on his Kindle,” Leni says. “He'd talk about how much fun and easy it was. He'd even get eBook versions of books he already owned that were too big and heavy to read on his lap. He read so much, I don’t think he was getting very much rest, honestly.”

Leni and Neil Salkind volunteering at a library book sale

Neil's eBook gift to all of us by Cathy Hamilton LPL Friends & Foundation Legacy Coordinator

Neil Salkind was a prolific writer and editor and, as he loved to remind family, had three letters to the editor published by the New York Times in his lifetime. He was also an avid collector of first edition fiction books, many of them signed by their authors. “I told him he had to do something with those books,” says Neil’s widow, Leni Salkind. “I didn’t know what was valuable and I wasn’t going to know what he wanted me to do with them. So, he culled through all of his books and got rid of 500 that were unsigned and gave them all to the library. Then, he continued to buy more signed first editions. So, there were no empty spaces on the shelves. He filled them up again!” Loyal supporters of LPL’s Friends & Foundation, Neil and Leni sorted, priced, and scanned books. In addition, both Salkinds worked sideby-side at countless book sales over the years. “During every sale, one of the organizers, Marian Wilber, would take pictures of all the volunteers,” Leni remembers. “I have a big collection of those pictures. There’s a ton of them on the refrigerator of the two of us sitting next to each other working the sale. You can see all of our hair changes throughout the years. The ups, the downs, the different colors.” Neil always loved technology and the toys associated with that. He acquired a Kindle, Kindle Fire, an iPad, and got hooked on eBooks. 8 • LAWRENCE PUBLIC LIBRARY

After Neil passed away in 2017, Leni and her two children, Sara and Micah (also book lovers), were inspired to gift the library with the Neil J. Salkind eBook Collection. “This incredible tribute to Neil provides more than 700 eBooks to pick from,” says Brad Allen, library director. “Our digital collection is experiencing record usage, and this has provided a huge boost in what we can offer to the community.” “We were trying to think of something that would best memorialize him, and because eBooks gave him so much joy, we decided to create the Neil J. Salkind eBook Collection. With the fund supporting the library’s holdings, it's now a more permanent gift,” Leni says.

WED | Sep 23 | 7–8 PM | Online TBA WED | Oct 28 | 7–8 PM | Online TBA

We're happy to partner with the Hall Center for the Humanities for this series that brings KU scholars and their work to Lawrence Public Library. Sep 23 | David Farber Crack: Rock Cocaine, Street Capitalism, and the Decade of Greed A shattering account of the crack cocaine years, Crack tells the story of the young men who bet their lives on the rewards of selling 'rock' cocaine, the people who gave themselves over to the crack pipe, and the often-merciless authorities who incarcerated legions of African Americans caught in the crack cocaine underworld.

Based on interviews, archival research, judicial records, underground videos, and prison memoirs, Crack explains why, in a de-industrializing America in which market forces ruled and entrepreneurial risk-taking was celebrated, the crack industry was a lucrative enterprise for the 'Horatio Alger boys' of their place and time. These young, mostly African American entrepreneurs were profit-sharing partners in a deviant, criminal form of economic globalization. Crack takes a hard look at the dark side of late twentieth-century capitalism. Oct 28 | Susan K. Harris Mark Twain, the World, and Me: Following the Equator, Then and Now Harris follows Twain’s last lecture tour as he wound his way through the British Empire. Structured as a series of interlocking essays written in the first person, this engaging volume draws on Twain’s insights into the histories and cultures of Australia, India, and South Africa and weaves them into timely reflections on the legacies of those countries today. Harris meditates on what Twain’s travels mean for her as a scholar, a white woman, a Jewish American, a wife, and a mother. By treating topics as varied as colonial rule, the clash between Indigenous and settler communities, racial and sexual “inbetweenness,” and species decimation, Harris reveals how the world we know grew out of the colonial world Twain encountered. Her essays explore identity issues that still trouble us today: respecting race and gender, preserving nature, honoring Indigenous peoples, and respecting religious differences.
