Beyond Dragons Love Tacos My three-year-old presents me with fresh reading and viewing experiences I wouldn’t have had otherwise. I've developed a deep love for Dragons Love Tacos and Llama Destroys the World, and movies like Frozen and Moana. I love reading and watching these things with Zadie. It’s a true joy. But, I need to find time to exist as an adult human being and continue to read books that I enjoy. Full disclosure: my reading time has definitely been in serious decline. The challenge is finding energy and time to read books not geared specifically towards toddlers. For one, I’m more tired than I used to be now that I chase a kid around. I used to think I could squeeze in a few chapters while my daughter slept, but it turns out that afternoon nap time is prime reading time and my wife and I often take our own naps while Zadie catches some ZZZs. And if I can keep my eyes open mid-day (and get the vacuuming done quickly) I'm lucky to sit down with a book. The painful truth is that reading for myself has been restricted to mostly at night before bed. Even then, once we get our kid to sleep, it’s hard to muster much energy beyond winding down with a bit of TV. But, it's my love of books, bookstores, libraries, and the well-documented benefits reading brings — like reducing stress and increasing empathy — that aid my persistence to read for myself. Discovering new worlds, ideas, and places knows no bounds. Every book is a chance to experience something new, or even be comforted by something familiar. Fellow parents, I encourage you to find a way to prioritize your own reading because you and everyone you know will benefit from it. The easiest habit to make is to carry your grown-up book with you and squeeze in a few minutes here and there, like during your toddler's Scratch Garden sesh on YouTube. You'll find that you can still read, it just might take a bit longer to finish.

SUMMER READING | DO IT FOR YOUR BRAIN
l l
The importance of reading this summer By Karen Allen | Youth Services Coordinator This is not a message about learning loss, although it’s been the buzzword this year as much as “the new normal.” With schools shutting down last year, delays in starting and reopening, online learning, and everyone rolling with the punches, education had been less than ideal. Research estimates that students, on average, will have lost five to nine months of learning by the end of the school year — even more so for low-income families and students of color. Administrators have worked tirelessly listening to concerns and making tough decisions. Teachers (superheroes, to be totally honest) have outdone themselves to provide quality and engaging instruction in new ways and establish meaningful relationships with students online, which we all know is not easy. Students have spent hours focused on screens, learned countless new types of software, and in the case of my kids, have done many P.E. lessons with a variety of household trash (grocery bag ghostbusters, anyone?). It has been an extraordinary year in education and news. One full of frustration and creativity. Full of hard work and worry. No one needs reminders about this. We’re still living it. The critical thing to remember is that we have given our all and are long-due for a Seinfeld “serenity now” scream, a breath of fresh air, and some long-term brain breaks. Our approach to summer 2021 should include relaxation, low stress, healing, mental health restoration, and time spent just being. In the beforetimes, the library aimed to impart the importance of Summer Reading by making sure you knew about "summer slide" and how reading every day over the summer helps students retain reading and math skills. It does help and will help, but our mental and social health has taken a toll this year and we want to help you and your families replenish those buckets, too. More than ever, this summer we want to stress the health benefits of reading. Look how a little daily reading can transform you: 6 • LAWRENCE PUBLIC LIBRARY
Health benefits of reading: • improves self-esteem • increases empathy • improves memory • improves comprehension • improves focus • improves mental flexibility • helps fight depression • improves feelings of connectedness • inspires creative thought • can lengthen lifespan up to 2 years • lowers blood pressure • lowers heart rate • lowers feelings of distress • aids in sleep readiness Even after reading stops, these positive changes remarkably continue, demonstrtating the long-lasting effects that reading actually has on the brain.
"
If you, your kiddos, and teens spend the summer reading with us, you’ll be on the right track to repairing the toll the pandemic has had on your family’s life.
"
We want to make life simpler for you so we made Summer Reading an easy fit into your schedule and lifestyle. Track your hours online with the Beanstack app, or use a simple paper log. If you love stickers and happen to be entering kindergarten through 5th grade next year, we'll give you a free, 80-page badge book reading journal (available while supplies last)!
Just choose whichever method works best for you and your family, then read a total of 30 hours over the summer. There’s no pressure to choose the right
SUMMER READING | WHY WE DO THIS
book or finish any assigned reading. All we care about is that you read what you like! Choosing your own book (not what someone thinks you should read) has special powers in and of itself. It builds a real interest in reading and helps reluctant readers want to read even more. Of course, if you want any help finding your next best read, just ask! We love books and we read a whole lot, so we know all sorts of fresh, exciting books out there just waiting to get off the shelf and into your hands. Whether you're spending this summer with a little school year extension or taking time away from learning, reading should be a part of both. We all need a break and what better way to do that than to transport ourselves to fabulous places, have a laugh, put ourselves in the shoes of others, learn a new skill, and read for fun? It'll help your kiddos and teens maintain their skills and give them a much-needed mental breath of fresh air.
The “summer slide” can be avoided by making sure that kids and teens are as engaged as possible in whatever they choose to read — just as long as they’re reading every day. SOURCE: US Department of Education

Janie | Volunteer in Pandemic (VIP) Poster Award ANGELA SAYS: Janie Marples is in the Amazon room three days a week, sometimes more, for 2+ hours each day. Since the pandemic started, Janie has posted 2334 books — 1200 of these books have sold! She loves to learn new things about reselling books, and she's great at it! Why do you volunteer at the library? Every day is a treasure hunt. I never know what I’ll find in the piles of donations. Some books are rare; some are signed. This one is from a large personal library donation by one of our dear volunteers, Neil Salkind (1947-2017), autographed by John Irving himself. I love pricing items on Amazon and finding something unexpected that will give our library fundraising goals a big boost.
Julie | Volunteer in Pandemic (VIP) Cashier Award ANGELA SAYS: Julie Trowbridge-Alford is here every single weekday for the 1-3 PM cashier spot. It’s been so hard to get cashiers for the afternoons, but Julie's been a solid volunteer for the whole pandemic. She’s great with customers and has learned to shelve and scan while she waits for customers to complete their purchases. Why do you volunteer at the library? I love all the people I get to meet. One of my best memories is when I helped a middle school principal and librarian from central Kansas find books for their school library. They spent about $300, and at 50 cents a book, that's like 600 books for their students! I love books and just feel like I'm in the right place.
Cristi | 2021 Mary Dalton Murphy Volunteer Award ANGELA SAYS: Without Cristi Hansen's help, we would've been in a very sore spot. She's religiously volunteered at the donation box twice a week or more, and has learned to ship Amazon orders. She also volunteers Tuesdays — the biggest order day of the week. Cristi actively volunteers at the DGCO vaccination clinics and her church, too. Why do you volunteer at the library? Originally, I wanted something to do in the evenings since I'm retired. I chose the library because I love books and I read a lot, and this is a great source for really cheap books. When I'm done with something, I often just bring it back to sell again. It's the circle of (book) life!

Super Stan
2020 Mary Dalton Murphy Volunteer Award ANGELA SAYS: Due to a long-held rule that Friends & Foundation board members can't receive this prestigious award, a vote was taken at the annual meeting to kick Stan Ring off the board (temporarily) to make this possible. As a notorious rule-breaker, it was only appropriate to honor him this way. Stan has built so many things that make processing and selling books easier. From rolling carts to mobile bookshelves — the list of Stan Ring creations is loooooooong!
Love Garden Sounds
Community BFF Partner Award
ANGELA SAYS: Kelly Corcoran keeps the Love Garden Sounds dollar bin stocked with our CDs and shares the profits with us. He also pays us typical resell prices for the really good ones! This partnership has been a great way to get CDs out to the community and we're helping each other out. It takes lots of time to make this partnership work, and I'm glad Kelly volunteers his time to support the library in this unique way.
The Lawrence Public Library Friends & Foundation (LPLFF) is a non-profit organization that works to strengthen and supplement the public's investment in the library. Even in a city like Lawrence, tax dollars aren't enough to provide all the important resources that people need. Together, we give, we volunteer, and we advocate so the library can connect and inspire everyone in our community. NAME ADDRESS

ADULTS
GENERAL EVENTS Lisa Cron: Story or Die Adult Summer Reading Launch
WED | Jun 2 | 7-8 PM | Crowdcast This year’s Summer Reading Theme is Tails and Tales, so we’ve got master story coach Lisa Cron to tell us all about how our brains 14 • LAWRENCE PUBLIC LIBRARY
are wired for story. Lisa works with writers, organizations, nonprofits, and educators, to help them master the power of story so they can move people to action — whether that action is turning pages of a compelling novel or taking to the streets to change the world for the better. Or both! Big thanks McGrew Real Estate for sponsoring this cool author event. Lisa’s worked in publishing, as an agent, as a producer on shows for Showtime and CourtTV, and as a story consultant for Warner Brothers. Since 2006, she's been an instructor in the UCLA Extension Writers' Program and she's on the faculty of the School of Visual Arts MFA program in visual narrative in New York City. Her books are Wired for Story, Story Genius, and Story or Die, all of which you can check out with your library card!

Melissa Homestead: The Only Wonderful Things
WED | Jun 16 | 7-8 PM | Crowdcast Melissa Homestead, Professor of English and Director of The Cather Project at the University of Nebraska, will talk about her latest book, The Only Wonderful Things: The Creative Partnership of Willa Cather & Edith Lewis. What would Willa Cather's widely-read and cherished novels have looked like if she had never met magazine editor and copywriter Edith Lewis? In this groundbreaking book on Cather's relationship with her life partner, Homestead counters the established portrayal of Cather as a solitary genius and reassesses the role that Lewis, who's so far been rendered largely invisible by scholars, played in shaping Cather's work. Homestead argues that Lewis was not just Cather's companion but also her close literary collaborator and editor. After Cather's death, the story of her life with Edith Lewis couldn't be told, but by telling it now, Homestead offers a refreshing take on lesbian life in early twentiethcentury America.
