It’s cold outside! You have no excuse not to read! Welcome to Winter! So few people claim this as their favorite season and I’m not sure if I do either. But, I'll tell you one thing I love about it: no one can give you a hard time about staying inside and reading. Unless it’s a bright, sunny day after a nice snowfall when you should be out sledding, maybe then. But other than that, Winter is a sanctioned time to read. You have no excuses to offer. It’s dark by late afternoon. It’s cold. So make yourself a warm beverage, find a comfy spot, maybe next to a crackling fire (even if it’s just one on your TV — so much less smoke!), and crack open your next favorite book. Go ahead, I’ll wait. In all seriousness, for me, Winter is that time of year when I take stock and think how much I love to read. And how much I love books. At the start of a new year I think, how many books will I read this year? Where will they take me? What will I learn? How will what I read change me? I wrote to you in my last letter about our new mobile library, Dottie, hitting the road. Sadly, we hit some pandemic-related supply chain issues and Dottie’s debut has been delayed. My hope is that early in 2022, Dottie will be out on the road bringing books to you, out in the community, just in time for you to snuggle in and get reading.

A Library Fairytale Polli Kenn | Readers' Services Coordinator

Once upon a time, while working at the Book Help desk, I overheard a patron say, “I don’t know what to read! I wish someone could just tell me what I want!" At those words I levitated over to this person in a shimmering cloud (probably) to provide them a Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo moment of their very own, sans mice and pumpkins. You see, I am a librarian in Readers’ Services. We are stewards of adult fiction, audiobooks, large print, graphic novels, and poetry. But more importantly, we’re readers, too, and we exist to connect readers with the stories that enrich their lives. Whether an

avid reader or just coming back to books, you’re all invited to our ball! The LPL Book Squad will provide you with stories for the short days and cold nights ahead, whether you’re enjoying the fire or sleeping in the ashes. Evil step parent got you down? Waiting for your life partner formerly known as Prince to come? Let us find you the right book at the right time. It’s even more magical when you come back and tell us how it fit! If you have to be home by midnight, staff will hand pick books, curate book displays, share blogs and newsletters filled with books we’re enjoying, add lists of great titles in the catalog, make suggestions on social media, and choose winners for our Book Club in A Bag Service. If you’ve got a bit more time for dancing, listen to bookish discussions on our Book Squad Podcast. Fill out our Personalized Reading Recommendation form and we’ll send you a custom-made list. Come to one of our many monthly book clubs or literary programs. Or just stop us in the stacks and chat us up for a while. Let us help you find your glass slipper!

Where we can help you, When we can help you, and What kind of help you need.

www.surveymonkey.com/r/LPLCNA2021 Evan Lott | AmeriCorps VISTA Outreach Assessment Facilitator The pandemic's impact on us will take years to fully understand, but one thing happened that most of us will likely agree on: we figured out what really matters to us and made changes. Likewise, Lawrence Public Library had a rare opportunity to reflect deeply on our community's ongoing and pandemic-related needs, and how best to serve the town we love. We decided that bringing the library to you is essential and Dottie, our mobile library, was born. With Dottie, we'll come to you. But, where do we go? When should we be there? What do you need us to bring? We've started a community needs assessment with a simple survey. If you've got five minutes to visit the links above (type in the URL or scan that QR code) and answer a few of our burning questions, you'll help guide the library’s outreach efforts for years to come. Let's go!

An Evening with U.S. Poet Laureate

Joy Harjo We're delighted to welcome Joy Harjo, Muscogee (Creek) Nation, the first Native American to serve as the United States Poet Laureate, to Lawrence on February 23, 2022. Harjo’s visit is hosted in partnership with Humanities Kansas, Haskell Indian Nations University, KU’s Hall Center for the Humanities, and the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation. An accomplished author and musician, Harjo will discuss her newest book, Poet Warrior: A Memoir. This deeply personal account reveals how Harjo came to write poetry of compassion and healing, poetry with the power to unearth the truth and demand justice. It weaves together the voices that shaped her: stories of ancestors and family, the poetry and music that she first encountered as a child, the teachings of a changing earth, and the poets who paved her way.

"If my work does nothing else, when I get to the end of my life, I want Native peoples to be seen as human beings." "I've come to realize that what has motivated my art-making is really a strong need for justice, for ‘people’ to be treated with respect. And then when I say people, I also mean animals and insects and the birds and the earth and the earth person that we are all part of — that there's a key element and that's respect. And my work has always been motivated by that need for respect.” —Joy Harjo* *From NPR's 'Fresh Air with Terry Gross' (Sept. 7, 2021)

WED | Feb 23 | 7 PM | Haskell University Auditorium This event is free and open to the public. Learn more at lplks.org.
