Noe Valley Residence

Planting Rendering

LOCATION: San Francisco, CA PHASE: 100% CDs, Built Responsible for designing concept, studies of site conditions, construction documents and all rendered graphics. The property is a combination of two adjacent lots in Noe Valley, the backyard sits on a steep hill with many existing Japanese maples. The client wanted the landscape to imitate nature which is inspired by Japanese landscape design principles and with a contemporary San Francisco twist. The trees onsite were saved to provide a forest like canopy along the hillside. The sloped terraces from the patio into the garden level emulate the profile of a mountain ridge with weaving hills. A bed of blue colored grasses mimics a river bed. These terraces also provide an element of play for the clients young children. The properties constraints were used as opportunities for story telling. PROGRAMS USED: Adobe Photoshop, AutoCAD

The residence features a transitional style home with contemporary finishes. The goals for the landscape are to provide outdoor living rooms for entertaining, an outdoor kitchen, viewing gardens, privacy as the lot is somewhat sunken and opportunitures for sculptures. The courtyards proved to be a challenge with regards to grading as all of the interior rooms are set to the same grade. This drove a different paving pattern and planting scheme which ended up providing more visual interest to the central courtyard. 8.

Finished Garden

Bernal Improv Planting

LOCATION: San Francisco, CA PHASE: Installed While working at Flora Grubb Gardens, I pursued garden design on my own and installed 2 gardens. This Bernal Heights residence was the first had been mostly constructed and needed new plantings in all planting areas, pottery and terraces. We phased the planting into 2 installs and worked towards creating a fun and almost prehistoric looking garden. The client eventually added rusted steel dinosaur sculptures. Succulents, cacti and proteaceous plantings were used to meet the clients goals of low water and low maintenance. The lower garden terraces were a challenge as the entire home drained to these beds making it tough for succulents to grow. We mixed grasses and moderate water succulents to keep continuity in the garden. We improvised all plantings using plants in stock so we could install the next day.

Baja Vacation Home

LOCATION: Baja, Mexico PHASE: Concept Design Assisted the project manager with concept and schematic design. Responsible for design assistance, rendered graphics and studies. The site is located on a beachfront property with a gentle slope to the ocean. The client purchased two lots with the intention of developing a new residence on one side and a guest house on the other. Staggered entry walls frame the entry court while providing privacy, paving strips and a water feature guides guests into the entry courtyard. A gravel cactus garden with arbor and seating area provides a shaded patio and planting scheme that won’t block the view overlooking the ocean. The arbor is made of steel and thin fabric strips as fabric is easily replaced if the arbor is damaged during a hurricane. Large accent trees and a sculptural boulder made from local stone is to be placed in the view of the garden from the courtyard to honor the native landscape. PROGRAMS USED: Adobe Photoshop, AutoCAD, Sketchup

Portola Valley Residence

LOCATION: Portola Valley, California PHASE: 75% DD Assisted the project manager with design development. Responsible for design assistance, rendered graphics and studies. The site is located on a steep hillside. The autocourt rests at the top with a steep slope down to the garden. Many studies on the entry retaining walls, stairs to the pool and overall grading was implemented as the residence cuts into the hillside and a gentle transition from street to garden was an importnat design goal of the client. The stairs from the house to the pool feature steel headers to be curved with grade as a solution that blended harscape with the natural landscape. PROGRAMS USED: Adobe Photoshop, AutoCAD, Sketchup

Personal Interests

Watercolor Paintings Nighttime painting of the Guggenheim in Bilbao, Spain

Quick study of Half Moon Bay, CA.

I studied fine arts throughout my childhood in Singapore and have continued to create. The Singapore landscape never fails to inspire me as it effortlessly blends the natural jungles of what once was while looking to the future, urban city that it is. Watercolor painting is my preferred medium. I enjoy the patience needed to paint and practice a steady hand with clean or freeflowing linework.

Succulent Compositions

A series of indoor and outdoor succulent compositions. Working at Flora Grubb Gardens has taught me a lot about the botanical nature of succulents and cacti. For example, the difference between outdoor vs indoor succulents is their need for wind. The “outdoor” succulents have evolved to incorporate wind into their growth habit, needing wind to pass between their leaves for healthy growth. These outdoor succulents grow with a rosette leaf layout while “indoor” succulents do not need the wind as their leaves grow in pairs and opposite. I have found this information to be helpful when designing succulent gardens.
