A message from the President
L
PS members are a generous lot. They give of their time and donate their images, all to improve the social fabric of our city and state. Several not-for-profit organizations look to LPS members to assist in their efforts. LPS has provided volunteers to photograph the participants in the Special Olympics. The images made contribute to the participant’s excitement and feeling of importance. Earlier this year, eleven of our members provided the photography services needed. And don’t you know it, these photographers received tons of love from the participants.
A request for photographers has been sent to LPS by “The Resource Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders.” They plan a fund-raiser on April 22nd that features a 5K Run, Walk and Fun Fest. Again, volunteering photographers will see the fruits of their donated time. LPS will inform on further details. Time is not the only thing donated by LPS members. Several members donate one, two or more of their images each year to suitable non-profit fund-

raiser for use in silent auctions, direct sale, etc. For example, images are auctioned or sold at: the Rural Life’s “Red Rooster” event; the St. Vincent DePaul’s annual “Band, Beer and Barbeque” (funds go to Uniforms for Kids program); the Boy Scouts annual dinner; LPB; Coastal Conservation Association; Ducks Unlimited, and others. There are other examples of LPS members contributing to the community’s quality of life that are not mentioned here. They are simply unknown to me at this time. I think that more visibility of all of these efforts would encourage even greater LPS participation. To that end, all member contributions should be listed for all of the LPS tribe to see. We are thinking about putting a tote board in LPS’ “Focus” newsletter by number and type. We have not yet decided on the exact format to be used. But we will. Stay tuned. Note that “off grid” individual contributions by LPS members will also be listed. So there it is. What say you?

April 6, 2017 Composition, Lighting and Portraiture The Basics and a Little More Bernard Gillette Composition, Lighting and Portraiture, the basics and a little more will be of interest to both the beginner and experienced photographer. The composition portion will include, rule of thirds, leading lines, patterns, balance and more. The lighting topic will include hard light, slight, dramatic light and backlight. Portraiture, while being simply an introduction, will be of interest to many. Many photographers are familiar with these subjects. For the beginner, this will be of keen interest as it is intended to help you see the photograph prior to releasing the shutter button. For the experienced photographer, it is always good to review the basics. Perhaps there is something that could use a little refreshing.

Jon Fishback Jon has been a serious photographer for nearly 60 years. He has a full fellowship in photography from the Professional Photographers of Washington, achieved while owning and operating a full service studio for nearly 30 years. Jon’s work is collected by the Seattle Art Museum and the Detroit Art institute. He holds the distinction of Associate Fellow from the Royal Photographic Society. Jon is the director of educations services for the Photographic Society of America. He was instrumental in creating the curriculum of all the online courses for the Society. Jon Teaches 4 online courses, one of which is the Image Analysis course.

Natchez Pilgrimage Tours Natchez, Mississippi April 8, 2017 (Optional April 9, 2017) Reserve this date, as this trip offers many nice perks for the photographer and guest. Natchez, Mississippi offers an extensive collection of antebellum structures. Home to 75 neoclassical and Greek Revival dwellings, visitors can step back in time and see the city’s landscape as it once was with twelve historic homes open for touring. The annual spring pilgrimage provides a look back at this antebellum age. During this time of year, homeowners of historic properties open their doors to visitors as they have since 1932. Costumed guides, often descendants of the original home owners, lead guests on period tours. The Natchez Pilgrimage Tours Association (NPTA) has scheduled both morning and afternoon tours of 12 historic homes on Saturday, April 8. An additional 5 homes are available on Sunday April 9. Normally interior photographs are not permitted. However we are working with NPTA and they will seek permission for our group to photograph interiors. Normally the tour fees are $15.00 per person per site. With 20 or more folks in our group we will be able to purchase a set of three tickets (One per site) for $36.00. Tour prices for the Museum House normally $20.00 will be reduced to $17.00 for our group. Should you elect to stay the night, I expect NPTA to get us a group rate at one or more of the local hotels. Saturday evening the “Historic Natchez Tableaux” and the “Southern Exposure” dance programs will perform in the evening. These dance programs will offer another photo challenge for those who spend the night. Early registration is encouraged allowing us to inform NPTA of the number of participants and in turn secure information as to various fees and hotel/motel information. Please include those who plan to attend (your guest) even though they are not interested in photography. Register Here

Dear LPS Member, In April, we will begin using the Visual Pursuits software for submitting images for the Digital Contest. Instead of sending your images by email, you will upload your images to the appropriate competition by logging in to your account at: https://lps.photoclubservices.com Back in December you should have received an email that gave you a user name and password. If you no longer have that email, use your email address as user name and press the reset password button to get a new password. After logging in you can change the password and your user name to anything you like to make it easier to remember. You must be listed as a competing member in order to upload images. I have identified all members who have competed in the past several months as competing members and you should have no trouble uploading your images. If you are not identified as a competing member, you can request a status change by sending me an email at digitalcontest@laphotosociety.com and I will change your status to competing. After you have logged in to the website and opened the drop down for Competitions, select the button "Submit Images to a Competition". There is a video tutorial button on how to submit images that you can view if you have questions on the process. If you have trouble entering images, please email me and I will help as best I can. The April Contest will open for entries on April 1 and will close on April 17 at 8:00pm. This is the Monday before our meeting and is the same deadline we have always had. If you do not get your entry in on time, it will not be entered. All rules on number of entries is the same as before, two total per member in color and/or monochrome. et’s go out and shoot those images early or late, either sunrise and before and an hour later and before sunset and beyond. If you get up really early to shoot like me before and after sunrise you will get light that intensifies the colors of nature and creates spectacular light. Or, you can choose to shoot before and after sunset and get again that wonderful light which also intensifies color. Either time allows for light when the colors come alive and cause breathtaking emotions. Immediately before a sunrise or after a sunset there
is a different light that photographers call the “blue hours” or “sweet light” where the color is dramatic. After sunrise the golden light begins which is soft and warm. The lighting is also softer in the late afternoon and then becomes warmer in the golden hour just before the sun goes down and then more dramatic at night when the blue light begins again shortly after sunset. Our images are two dimensional but when taken in the golden light or blue light then they may appear more three dimensional. The images shown were taken in different lighting, one in midday and one during sunrise and the other at sunset, and by the way they were all taken in Louisiana. At sunrise and sunset I suggest shooting in manual mode. To get that golden light, a great place to
start is to of course know when your sun rises and sets. But this is not the only factor. Clouds, mist, and fog all affect the sun and its lighting. These factors also serve to create dramatic images. Just recently I went to get a sunrise but never saw the sun because of the fog. Fog is beautiful. It changes your surroundings to a soft mystical feel. Fog in a photograph is a favorite of mine. Then if it is a cloudy day or an overcast day you will also get soft light but not golden light and probably not a beautiful sky. This could be a good time to shoot a portrait, nice even light. Because there is not much drama or color in a cloudy sky, you may take a photo and choose to crop most of its sky for a more interesting foreground. In other words fill your subject within most of the image. Photographers should be a light detective prior to taking any photo in other words look for the light. Some of the most interesting photos can be a dramatic sky with a smaller foreground object when the two are carefully balanced. When shooting in dramatic lighting a tripod is essential for the sharpest photo using a longer exposure or slower shutter speed. With most lenses a small aperture (larger f number) will get you the sharpest image.

Our program consists of volunteer photographers within the LPS who can assist you with your questions pertaining to depth of field, shutter speed, ISO, etc. and can be very helpful for someone that needs a little extra help. I am reaching out to you today in hopes to gain your club’s support with regard to our 8th Annual Active for Autism 5K Run, Walk and Fun Fest. The event will be held on April 22nd at the Louisiana State Police Headquarters, here in Baton Rouge. The event starts at 8 AM and will end at 11:30 AM. We are in need of some photographers who would be willing to generously donate their time and their talents to taking photos of the event that we can share with participants and the families that we serve on social media. We are a small non-profit 501(c) (3) organization so we rely heavily on the generosity of those in our community to bring this amazing event to the community. The event funds the program that I direct and therefore every dollar earned at the event goes into running the program and providing services free of charge to individuals and families who are living with a diagnosis of Autism. The Resource Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders serves individuals and families in 8 parishes. Your organization has helped us out in the past by having some of your photographers generously giving of their time to take photos. When your photographers have helped us (even in the rain) they have taken some of the most amazing photos!! I am hoping that you can help me by asking your members for their support. We are expecting to see 3,000 – 5,000 people at the event. So the opportunity to capture some breath taking photos will be there. If anyone is interested in helping us out, can you please have them call me directly at the number below. Our office is open Monday – Friday from 9 AM – 4 PM. A Beginner’s Guide to Focus Stacking A Post By: Bruce Wunderlich

ther than for special effect, photographers generally do not want out-of-focus images. But sometimes, regardless of which camera settings are used, not every detail of an image can be captured tack sharp. Depth of field (DOF) can be so shallow, that interesting aspects of the photos are without sharpness. Setting to a smaller aperture may be used to increase DOF, but moving the aperture farther from a lens’s sweet spot introduces lens diffraction into the image, again resulting in some fuzziness. Also, if stopping down the camera’s aperture, shutter speed will need to be increased and blurry images may result. Increasing ISO to help with the exposure will introduce digital noise to the image. So, how do you shoot with the best aperture and shutter speed combination, and get sharp images from front to back of an image? A technique that can help resolve this problem is called focus stacking. Here’s some helpful info about this technique.
What You Need
Focus stacking is similar in principle to HDR. However, with focus stacking, images are captured with different focus points, and later combined in Photoshop, to create an image with more DOF than would be possible with a single exposure. Landscape and macro photography are two genres of photography that benefit most from using this procedure. Be warned – calm winds and reasonably stationary objects are a must! Before beginning to shoot, it is always helpful to know a lens’s sweet spot, defined as the aperture that the lens produces its sharpest image. (It is usually found about two to three stops from wide open.) Experiment until this important setting is determined.

• A tripod. • A DSLR camera, capable of shooting in manual mode. It is possible to use a point and shoot camera, but it must have manual mode and manual focus capabilities. • Depth of Field iPhone app (helpful but not required). • Photoshop or another focus stacking software. Focus April 2017
How to Shoot for Focus Stacking
There are two basic scenarios when shooting landscapes, that may benefit from focus stacking. The first is when the subject is a close foreground object, with an interesting background, both desirable aspects to be in sharp focus. The second, is when using a telephoto lens (which typically has a shallow depth of field) and the subject covers multiple distances, that may be brought into sharper focus. (FYI: If shooting a landscape with a wide angle lens, the DOF may be adequate enough to capture a

sharp image that has no benefit in being processed by focus stacking.) Tip: Here is a little trick to find out if focus stacking will benefit an image when photographing a scene or subject. After composing the image, set the focus point about one third into the image. Then, using Live View, enlarge the image and check to see if the foreground and background are sharp or blurry. If either or neither are in focus as sharply as desired, the image could benefit from focus stacking.
Steps for Shooting Landscapes for Focus Stacking 1. Place the camera on a sturdy tripod – a must! 2. Frame the subject and compose the shot. 3. Determine exposure for the scene, and set the camera to manual mode, to ensure that the exposure is constant for every image. 4. Set the camera to Live View and aim the focus point on the nearest object desired to be in focus. Use the camera’s zoom (+ button, not zoom on the lens) to preview the focus through Live View. Then switch to manual focus and use the focus ring to fine tune for sharpness if necessary. 5. Take the first exposure. 6. Without moving the camera or adjusting any settings, move the focus point to an object mid-way in the image and refocus. 7. Take the second exposure. 8. Again, without changing anything, refocus on an object at the farthest point of the intended image. 9. Take the third exposure. To capture landscapes, three images are generally all that is necessary to create sharp focus stacking images, but it’s completely fine to take extra images to make sure that the entire scenee is covered. A rule of thumb would be to add more images for longer focal lengths. Be aware that extra images will take longer to process in post-production. If available, check the DOF with a Smartphone app, in order to figure out how many images will be necessary, to get every aspect of the photo in focus.

n addition to the interclub competitions you, as an individual member of PSA, can enter contests. Some are digital and some are print. We as a club are limited to 6 images every other month but you as an individual member may submit on your own. I encourage you to consider joining PSA.
