GENERAL PRENACE

The first three Readers in the Learning English series have proved very successfur. Folrgfrrg o., [ri", ihe English Association has been ablc, with finan"cial assistance from the c anadian International D everopment Agency, to pro duce several more readers in the series and mike -trr"* widety available at readily affordable prices. The Learning English series has been designed especially for Lankan students with words and picturis thaf are familiar to them. This is because learning is made easier when confidence is built up and this iJ best developed through material that is not strange or totalry arien to the learner's culture. Accordingly, me gieater number of books a student is giv:n the opgortunit5r of reading, the less alienated he or she will feer. For tii" ,".son we hope all students will have access to a number of books at each level including the workbooks. As planned at the outset, five revels of Readers have now been made avairable. They are carefully graded and adopt different approaches. rt i" not essentiallhat students go through all of them in order. students at varying degrees of proficiency may begin at ilre level which suits them best. Qrrick students will be able to progress on to the next level reading just a single Reader it o.re lever. However, as *": the books have been produced primarily to educate througtr enjoyme't, we hope that students t te pleasur"'i., reading through as many books as possible "ritt atlach level.
