Welcome. “The quality and performance of a new ship is influenced by the type of support provided throughout the newbuild process. Lloyd’s Register has a track record for achieving the highest standards in newbuild quality. More shipowners choose us to class their newbuilds than anyone else. It’s this close collaboration that makes the vital difference between good and great – and it lasts for the ship’s entire lifetime. This guide details our deep understanding of, and close relationships with, the North Asia shipbuilding industry across Greater China, Japan and South Korea. As we look to constantly improve the services we provide to each and every client, we also welcome your feedback. Thank you for considering a partnership with Lloyd’s Register in your newest shipbuilding project; we look forward to hearing more about your requirements and to finding the right solution with you.”
21.5% of all tonnage on order globally is under the survey of Lloyd’s Register – more than any other class. Source: IHS Fairplay data, 2019

INTRODUCTION: JAPAN
Preface. Welcome to Lloyd’s Register’s North Asia new construction guide for 2020. Since we first published our guide to new construction in China in 2008, we have been encouraged by the positive feedback we have received from the industry. This guide has been expanded to include shipyard entries for Japan and Korea, to provide a complete view of the capacity of these three major shipbuilding countries in the ever-changing maritime environment, driven by economic, regulatory and technological challenges. While demand for the book, and for our advice on building ships within North Asia, has been steady and strong during this time, we cannot say the same about the shipbuilding industry itself. We have experienced all stages of the shipbuilding market cycle: rapid growth in orders and yard capacity, followed by contraction in orders and decline in orderbook; consolidation of shipyards and shipyard groups; and finally, some recovery. We have also seen significant and continual changes in ship design in recent years, driven by market competition and economic and regulatory challenges. These include the ‘Eco’ ship designs, ‘Super-size’ containerships up to 23,000 TEU, H-CSR Goal Based Bulk Carrier and Tanker Rules, LNG as fuel, NOx Tier 3 and more. Looking ahead, the pace and scale of change are only going to continue and increase. ‘Disruption’ is a very popular, and possibly overused, word these days but it perfectly describes the outlook for shipping and shipbuilding. The IMO 2020 Sulphur Cap is disrupting the industry: from a technical perspective, designs are already changing as more and more ships adopt alternatives to low sulphur. Furthermore, the IMO regulations, and associated targets for the significant reduction of Green House Gases by 2030 and 2050, will change the face of shipping: 10 years from now, ships will look very different. Now, with the 2020 deadline approaching, shipowners and shipyards are moving forward with more certainty in terms of potential 2030 compliance (zero-carbon ready) designs, which in turn will have an impact on shipbuilding markets. Digitalisation and increasing levels of automation will not only change the systems and hardware installed onboard, they will change the way the ships are operated. In the face of such rapid change and disruption, it is important not to lose sight of the fundamentals of successful newbuild projects. Driving quality, reliability and safety remains at the core of Lloyd's Register’s focus globally. Our Technical Performance Group (TPG) continues to provide additional support to our surveyor team, as well as to owners and shipyards to monitor and improve the quality of welding, NDE, coatings, materials and equipment. At Lloyd’s Register we are proud of our reputation among shipyards and shipowners for upholding the highest technical standards and quality within North Asia. We believe this is demonstrated by the fact that more tonnage is on order in the area to Lloyd's Register than any other class society and has remained so for many years. The shipbuilding landscape is always changing, and we encourage you to engage with our Lloyd's Register teams in North Asia or at home, to get the latest updates and intelligence on the shipyards and design companies. We hope you find this edition of the guide useful, and that we can support you on your next project.

1. Lloyd’s Register newbuild and existing ship services.
For shipowners, the construction of a new ship involves a delicate balance of many critical priorities. You need to maximise your income by securing and maintaining ship charters; maintain and enhance your reputation for safety, environmental performance and other ethical factors; ensure your ship is built to the appropriate levels of quality, with minimal risk of breakdowns while in-service; keep any time off-hire or in maintenance to a minimum; and ensure compliance with customer or regulatory requirements. Finally, when the time comes, you must also obtain the greatest possible resale or residual commercial value for the ship itself. Lloyd’s Register is here to help you achieve these goals, and support you at all stages of your ship’s life, from pre-contract, through design, build and in-service to end-of-life. Any ship represents a significant capital investment. It is essential that it is constructed to exacting standards in order to optimise both its through-life performance and revenue potential. The fabrication, assembly and commissioning of the hull, machinery and onboard systems of a modern ship is a complex process, so any problems at the design and construction stage can have significant business impact, both for delivery and in-service. How can Lloyd’s Register help? Our new construction service helps you take the first step towards improved safety, environmental and operational performance at the design and construction stages. Our service offers intelligent, balanced advice and support that will help you meet your project challenges. It will also mitigate the risk related to the design and construction process and enhance the operational through-life performance and reliability of your vessels.
13.87 mGT of Lloyd's Register classed vessels were successfully delivered in 2018. At pre-contract stage Since the publication of our first guide in 2008, Lloyd’s Register has assisted ship owners with newbuild projects all the way from initial concept design to final contract specification with shipyards. We tailor our service to meet the specific needs of every individual client we work with, to provide the right technical and commercial support. With the rise of eco-friendly and fuel-efficient designs, this approach is more relevant than ever as we work together to create more technical specifications to future-proof ship operations. Lloyd’s Register can help you to: •
Select the right shipyard
•
Check the ship specification exactly meets your needs
•
Future-proof the design against any regulatory changes
•
I mprove the design's performance: to burn less fuel, carry more cargo, reduce maintenance costs, minimise off-hire and improve safety

Jiangnan Shipyard (Group) Co., Ltd.
Jiangnan Shipyard commenced operations in 1865. In 1996, it became a state-owned, solely-funded company and now operates as part of CSSC Shipbuilding Group. In 2006, it relocated its shipbuilding facilities to Changxing Island, 8km from Shanghai Pudong. The Group employs about 10,500 staff and has an annual production capacity of 2 million DWT. Jiangnan Shipyard provides a complete range of newbuilding, repair, refit and conversion services. The shipyard has a diverse production capability targeting new construction markets in the commercial, naval and offshore sectors. It has dry dock facilities capable of developing VLCC/VLOC class ship types and 16 designated assembly areas. The main commercial production at Jiangnan Shipyard includes Panamax and Handymax bulk carriers, crude oil tankers, car carriers, MPVs, fast feeder containerships and liquefied gas carriers. As of mid2009, Jiangnan Shipyard had production orders for a series of 76K DWT Panamax bulk carriers and oil product/ chemical tankers. All build works have been accredited with ISO 9001 certification. Jiangnan Shipyard Group operates two yards: Jiangnan Shipyard, mainly for naval ships, gas ships and other high-tech engineering vessels; and Jiangnan Changxing Heavy Industry Co., Ltd (JNCX). This yard, which Jiangnan Shipyard co-owns 65:35 with Bao Steel, has large dock and construction facilities that can build bulk carriers up to VLOC, oil tankers up to VLCC and container vessels up to 22K TEU. JNCX is also experienced in building type A VLGCs. Jiangnan Shipyard Group has a dedicated technical centre, the Jiangnan Institute of Technology, established in December 2016. Equipped with industry-standard software and testing facilities, it provides a range of services through its R&D, Design, Information Technology and Science & Technology Development departments.
