( YO U ! )

Mission Statement Our goal is to educate students to become independent thinkers and lifelong learners and to pursue academic excellence and individual achievement, in a context of respect for others and service to the community. We believe that learning should be active and experiential, with the School providing abundant opportunities for students to excel. We accept students with a range of abilities and talents who can take full advantage of a rich and demanding academic program in which each student is both challenged and supported. We seek to create within the School a community built on understanding and respecting others. Thus, our student body traditionally reflects the racial and cultural diversity of our city, and our curriculum is built on inter-disciplinary studies to promote understanding of many cultures. While individual achievement is encouraged and rewarded, our program underscores the value of shared goals, friendship and cooperation in mastering difficult tasks. The progressive ideals that in 1921 gave life and inspiration to the School- academic excellence and creativity, active learning and innovative teaching, respect for the individual and responsibility to the community-continue to guide the School today. Approved by the Board of Trustees, 1992 Reaffirmed, 2007

Letter from the Board Chair

LREI 2009-2010 Board of Trustees

Dear LREI Family, Alumni and Friends,

Denise Adler Craig Balsam Armon Bar-Tur ‘87 Irene Cabrera Ma hew Cipriano ‘96 Willard Cook Stephen Cornick ‘85 Celeste Dorsey Sharon Dupree Roger Ehrenberg, Treasurer James Gadsden ‘66 Pippa Gerard Francis Greenburger James Harris, At-Large Rhonda Hartley Kim Hostler Sarah Lutz Jeannie Park Michael Patrick ‘71, Chair Peggy Peloquin Jacqueline Pelzer Kasey Picayo Robert Rosenthal ‘80, Vice Chair Melissa Rubin Susie Scher Kent G. Another summer has ended and as we welcome everyone back to LREI for another school year, I must pause for a moment to reflect on what a remarkable year it was! In 2004 the Board of Trustees laid out an exciting vision for the future of LREI and this past year we saw that vision continue to unfold in exciting ways. The inclusion of the townhouse at Charlton Street gave our High School students much needed space and created a true downtown campus for LREI; renovations at Sixth Avenue guaranteed that children in all divisions benefited from our efforts; and, the amount of tuition remission given to LREI students supported our core mission — all these things, and many others, happened in just this past year. This growth will continue, no doubt, in the year to come. On the following pages you will find listed those who gave to LREI this past year. I am forever in awe by the generosity of our community, and thank each and every one of you for your contributions. It is because of you that this year was such a success. It would be remiss of me not to extend a special word of gratitude to a few members of our community who helped make this all possible. Of course, our Director, Phil Kassen, who works every day to ensure that Elisabeth Irwin’s vision does not falter and only continues to evolve in an ever-changing world. With Phil’s commitment and spirit as our guiding force, it is difficult to imagine us not succeeding. Thank you, Phil, for your leadership and vision. To my fellow Trustees, a special thank you for all you do for LREI. Your dedication and generosity to the school — both in time and financial commitment — goes above and beyond what any Board Chair could hope. You set the bar for the rest of the community to follow — and follow they do — as countless volunteers gave again tirelessly of their time and talents to make every event at LREI a special one. None of this would have been possible without you. LREI enjoys the generous support of many deeply loyal friends. For that, we are profoundly thankful.

With warm regards to you all,

Michael Patrick ‘71 Chair, LREI Board of Trustees

Letter from the Director

Dear LREI Community,

Jodi Balsam Kate Edgar Theo Dotson Mindy Goldberg, Divisional Co-Chair Terry Grimmig Ronnie Halper, Divisional Co-Chair Jim Harris, Co-Chair Tatjana Kalinin Mamie McIndoe, Divisional Co-Chair Susan Noonan Kasey Picayo, Co-Chair Rina Root Sheila Siemion Shirley Staples Merril Stern

Welcome back! As I write this I imagine the first day of school filled with excitement and energy. Students will return from a summer filled with adventure and relay their tales of such to one another. The joy seen in their faces as they greet old friends and meet new friends is a true indication of the warm and welcoming community that is LREI. While 43 students le us in June to go to college and begin a different chapter in their lives, another group is just beginning their LREI experience and all that it has to offer. This past year saw remarkable growth in the school – enrollment was as high as ever; our High School facility grew; and, each division saw programmatic changes that will impact each child in the classroom every day. In the following pages you will find more indicators of this growth and the strength of our community, namely the generosity of our families and friends who gave much this past year. It's a special testament to LREI that we all come together to support this unique institution. A major milestone was completed this past year as we expanded our Charlton Street campus to include the townhouse at 42 Charlton Street. Our High School students found themselves in an expanded space with additional classrooms, a courtyard, a new music room and a new student lounge. The faculty at Charlton Street has additional and appropriate spaces that will support their excellent teaching and our vibrant program. New Admissions and College Guidance offices give students, faculty/staff and parents a place to meet that is as vibrant and compelling as the school itself.

At Sixth Avenue, renovations were made to the Second Grade classrooms, the cafeteria and the roof. As we continue our efforts with the Building for Action campaign, our families and students will continue to see growth and change on both campuses at LREI. It goes without saying that none of the above accomplishments could have taken place without the support and generosity of our families and friends. To these individuals I extend my heartfelt gratitude and appreciation for all you do for LREI. Without you none of this would have been possible. I look forward to another school year and the growth of our students and our institution. Thank you for making it possible.

Warm regards,

Philip Kassen Director, LREI

End owment & Restric ted Giving

How to Establish an Endowed Fund The endowment is a vital resource to LREI and income from the endowment supports a variety of purposes within the School’s operating budget. To discuss how individual or family interests may match a need at LREI please contact the Office of Advancement.

Ways of Giving There are many ways to make a charitable contribution to LREI and each type of gi has potential tax benefits to the donor who itemizes deductions. The following descriptions are intended to draw a ention to the different options that are available. This information is not intended to provide specific financial or tax advice that individuals should seek from their personal financial advisors.

Gifts of Cash The majority of gi s to LREI are cash contributions, for which donors may receive tax benefits. Cash gi s may be put to immediate use by the School for programs, endowment and projects.

Gifts of Securities Many donors may realize substantial tax advantages by transferring stock to the School. Gi s of securities are valued at the median price on the date of transfer to LREI. Capital gains on the amount of appreciation may be avoided and, depending on the donor’s personal tax situation, he or she may receive a tax deduction for the full market value of the stock. For details on how to make a gi of securities to LREI, please contact the Office of Advancement.

Other Property A gi of tangible property to LREI may result in a tax deduction for the donor. Gi s-in-kind are items such as works of art, equipment, books, furniture, antiques, real estate and similar non-monetary contributions. If you have a question about a gi of tangible property, more information is available through the Office of Advancement.

Deferred Gifts & Bequests Many individuals discover that they can make a substantial gi to LREI through a bequest provision, a life income gi or trust. The Office of Advancement can provide details about the planned giving vehicles that are available. There are tax advantages
