Letter from the Board Chair Dear LREI Community, On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I want to express my deep appreciation to you: our parents, grandparents, alumni, trustees, alumni parents, faculty, staff, and friends. Your belief in LREI and your commitment to our progressive program is captured in the unprecedented philanthropic achievements of the 2014-2015 school year. With the support of hundreds of dedicated volunteers, the LREI community raised record totals for both the Annual Fund and the Big Auction. Over 800 donors contributed $1.282 million to the Annual Fund, with parent participation holding steady at 82 percent and faculty/staff participation reaching a record 92 percent– thank you! Our Big Auction – “LREI Unplugged” – drew over 400 guests to City Winery for a fun and successful evening earning net proceeds of $334,000, also a first for us. Your support ensures that LREI can remain a leader among New York City independent schools in providing financial aid to our students, while also offering an innovative curriculum and retaining our remarkable faculty. Reflecting on the year, I am drawn to thoughts of our founder Elisabeth Irwin. Some ninety-five years ago, Elisabeth envisioned and fought for a new kind of progressive education. She demonstrated bravery, optimism, and resilience, the very qualities that we venture to inspire in our children, the students of LREI. I think she would be very proud of the LREI community and how we keep her mission, vision, and passion alive each day. None of this would be possible without Phil’s leadership, the three principals’ dedication, and the faculty, administration, and staff’s efforts to make LREI the wonderful school it is. On behalf of all the trustees, thank you for your ongoing commitment to LREI.
Warm regards,
Amy Zimmerman Chair, LREI Board of Trustees

Letter from Director Phil Kassen Dear LREI Community, Greetings, one and all. I write this letter looking back on the 2014-2015 school year, thrilled by the many, many successes that were generated by students and faculty, culminating in the graduation of our largest senior class ever. We are so proud of these 61 students and of their 590 schoolmates. Reflecting on all of the accomplishments of the past year, there is no doubt that Little Red School House and Elisabeth Irwin High School is a dynamic learning community that supports and encourages the achievement and growth of all of its members, children and adults alike. Every day our students say “Yes” and often “YES!” to a dizzying array of challenges and experiences. They think about topics and issues from a variety of viewpoints, evaluating and analyzing complex concepts. The buildings are filled with new ideas that emerge in an arts class—music, dance, drama, fine art, photography and filmmaking, among other outlets—or might be a new solution to an age-old conundrum in math or history. As an LREI student you are presented with opportunities to push yourself outside of your comfort zone and to meet the challenge to be your best self and to develop your new self, no matter how great the challenge. Finally, our students grow to be respectful, interested, and involved members of the many communities to which they belong. Our rich program nurtures this growth and provides these experiences and, in concert with our excellent teachers, ensures our students’ development into able and admirable citizens. Your contributions to LREI’s Annual Fund make all of this possible. We are so grateful for your support of LREI’s progressive program and of our students and teachers. Thank you for all that you do. Senior Gift
Annette Desir
Each year, families of seniors are asked to make a special contribution to LREI as a Senior Class Gift. At the suggestion of our student government officers, this year’s gift will fund staffing and equipment to organize and digitize LREI’s yearbooks and archives. This will ensure the school’s rich history is available for study by current students and to connect alumni to their alma mater in perpetuity. This is an especially important initiative as the school looks to its centennial in 2021. Thank you to the 72% of senior families who donated a total of $22,571.
