3PL First on our list in the lineup of opportunities is 3PL. It has been in the sector from a very long time but with the advancement in e-commerce and vendors racing up to provide the fastest door to door services the scope for 3PL has widen like never before. 3P logistics is rising as a key driver of development for e-trade players as they try to create center abilities as retailers while outsourcing their logistical necessities. Monsoon India is mainly an agricultural country with over 70% of its people directly related to farming. To sustain agriculture the land requires adequate rainfall each season. Hence, annual rainfall is of prime importance. A normal rainfall this year could prompt the government to ease cutbacks on its export policy. We can expect this because we have witnessed this in past. In the years 2010 and 2011, due to a good monsoon the Indian government had eased curb on export of rice and wheat which was good for the economic growth. The production of oil seeds and grains gets a boost when rainfall is normal. A good crop indirectly curbs inflation. Monsoon is essential for quite a few crops in India. Kharif crop which is sown in

March depends on monsoon rains. States of Gujarat and Rajasthan sow peanuts just before the rains arrive. If rains do not arrive in time or are scanty the crop fails. This is also the season for paddy plantation in Uttar Pradesh. Paddy is dependent on rainfall for good harvesting. Monsoon influences many other crops across the country. Soya bean, sugarcane, cotton, rice and millet are some of the crops that flourish when rainfall is good. As we can see India is having a good monsoon season this year, with above average rains. We can surely expect a hike in agricultural production and also an increase in their transportation, export etc. Players in this sector can contemplate the future and keep a keen eye on this to monetize the situation.

cost was around 8-12 percent.Stressing that such a situation was not good for the country, he said it was less expensive and complicated to take goods from Mumbai to London than from Mumbai to Delhi. The minister further said his aim was to reduce logistic cost from 18 percent to 12 percent, adding, "it will help increase exports and create more employment potential in the country and add to the GDP." It is a clear and open invitation for people to come up with their ideas which could change the logistics sector inside out. It is time to use your imagination, create an out of the box plan, and implement it. There are many startups claiming to have new and fresh ways which can lower the total cost and raise the efficiency of logistics who can grab this opportunity and make the best of it.

It is anticipated to grow at a CAGR of 21 per cent to touch Rs 60,000 crore. not able to, due to India Logistics Market Limitations? Supply chain speed and flexibility have become two key levers for competitive differentiation and increased profitability. Within a global trade environment, one of the biggest challenges is the ability to manage seamless forward and backward flows of material and information. Globalization, development of information and communication technologies, as well as supply chain network optimization is reshaping trade flows. Some of the Challenges: Poor infrastructure and transport vehicles: Poor infrastructure and transport vehicles are a major hindrance. Although freight movement in India is increasing at 10 per cent a year, the infrastructure capacity is not being augmented, or better managed to meet the growing demand. As a result, performance declines and costs rise. Complex Tax laws : The complex tax laws on the implementa-

tion of VAT that vary across the states are another major concern for 3PLs. Another tax issue that is discouraging the 3PLs in India is the service tax on warehousing. Hence it may be cost effective for a company to keep warehousing as an inhouse activity, as outsourcing this activity means factoring in the service tax. Technology: Compared with the equipment and technologies used in developed countries, those used in India are not comparable in terms of sophistication. Besides, these are still very costly in India and many a time do not make economic sense to integrate. Lack of training and trained personnel: There is a complete lack of training in logistics in India with no dedicated institutions for the cause. This is an area that needs to be addressed. We need to build skills within our people in order for them to find work. In the future, the logistics outsourcing industry will be more global, diversified and concentrated. With the help of state-of-the-art technologies, more 3PLs will be gearing up to meet the demand growth and improve their services offerings by incorporating newer value-added services and customizing their supply chain management solutions. 5) Would you like to share any quote which has inspired you? It can be your own, or someone else's too. There are so many inspirational quotes that fly around these days. I read one the other day and I do not know who came up with it but I feel it is quite apt especially in today's context. When you feel like quitting, think about why you started. People tend to easily give up on what inspired them in the past if it isn't working for them in the present. When you choose a career or path it is importent dwelling on the past

but never lose sight of what made yochoose your life's work in the first place. 6) Who is your Mentor? If you could become like someone, who would that be? You may find this surprising but my mentor happens to be my business partner Uday Palsule who is also a very dear friend. We have had a long relationship and have never had any conflicts or felt the need to challenge each other. Many have told us to challenge each other in order to excel. We have honored each other's individuality in business and never questioned the decisions that each has taken. I would say that only because we owe the success of our company in large part to his incredible intelligence and patience. 7) At what age you started working and which was the first company you joined? I first started working when I was in college at the age of 17. I would put in a half day of work with my father in his business. When I completed my under-grad studies, I joined my father in his trading business.

8) Can you describe your journey (In short) from your First job to Spear Logistics Managing Director? It's been an interesting journey for sure and I could write a book on my experiences! Maybe someday. As I said, I worked with my father for a couple of years and then joined a company selling products that were used for construction. Joined my family business again for a couple of years and then received an offer from a business family in Pune to set up and head their new 3PL company in 1992. I had no experience or idea of what contract logistics was but dove right in. We, the promoters and I, learnt on the job and were lucky to have a client that taught us along the way. I also met Uday during my stint there. After almost eight years, I moved on to join a multinational freight forwarding company that wanted to establish its contract logistics business in India. I left them after a couple of years sometime in 2001 and we then started Spear Logistics with a small contract and have never looked back since.

Global Economic powerhouse within next ten years of time period, so it is implied that with economic growth operational environment and several other trends and designs need to be restructured. Keeping all these aspects live in our mind we have to make the living of smart cities with high quality, selfsustainable and mostly live with the nature i.e. without disturbing the nature. It has been seen that infrastructure to support the growing populations in these smart cities often lacking either due to budget or unplanned expansion or geographical constraint or accumulation of key requisites at one place. Our population has already dense and it is continue to increasing in numbers. As a result, the demands for housing, basic infrastructure, transportation, water, power, sewer,

and other basic urban services are touching sky. In addition to this, growing number of vehicles in urban areas are results in traffic, congestion, air and noise pollutions, water pollutions & scarcity, accident, which adversely impact safety & quality of our life as well economic competitiveness The smart cities has announced recently as a way of addressing these issues using state of Art infrastructure, information & communication technology and social information. This will be mainly based on mobile technology, real time visibility, IoT (Internet of Things) based approach to solve dynamic logistic problems and optimizing quality of service in entire supply chain management with planned investment to make it faster and more connected across all the modes to drive this at a larger scale and in more consolidated way. The problem of these cities are mainly today due to its population and along with that its logistics requirements. It is combination of People walking on the road or using rickshaw or auto rickshaw or their own cycle or motorcycle or taxi or own car, tempo / 1 MT vehicle / VAN / 3MT/ 7MT / 10MT / 20 trailer / 40 feet trailer. Each of one these have their own characteristics and demands to move on. Now a days, we can see many articles over internet that in urban areas up to 20% of traffic and 50% of greenhousegas emissions are generated by freight business and above on that our growing population adding up another load. In city like Varanasi the constituency of our PM, an old pilgrim city, key destination for domestic tourist & international tourist, suffering from huge traffic. Sometimes in evening traffic is so pathetic that people who are riding with cycle take half an hour time to ride 300m stretch. And it is better if we don't ask here about noise and air

pollution. So we need to have more focus to implement smart logistics to control and development of residential, Industrial & corporate infrastructure at the same time considering economic competitiveness. Approx 50% of logistics can be taken care by right infrastructure development and rest other by way of Smart Logistics. Logistics has a significant impact in Smart cities in terms with the environment, quality of life, road safety and fascinating effects of the city – and it influences citizens decisions to walk or cycle or bus or pool car or to take own car instead. For logistics Service Providers, who deliver goods to customers, optimizing quality of service, e.g., ensuring on-time delivery at reasonable cost is a major concern. This is demanding the optimization of truck loading and vehicle routing leading to consolidation and collaboration of entire Supply Chain Management. The nature of logistics is dynamic—orders or cancellations may be made at any time, and transportation difficulties may arise at any time. Isn't it? Solution of vehicle routing problems in conjunction with truck load optimisation is very attractive in just in time distribution context. Indeed the

inventory can be close to zero. Despite the advantages of just in time distribution, in particular, cost reduction, this technique may reflect weakness in the logistic chain in case of failures. So, how it can be resolved in smart cities to make the city really smart is subject to brainstorming workouts. Logistics is not limited to only Land Transportation by Trucks but have many services like waste management, recycle management, parcel and courier services, material for construction sites, plus many other services like laundry, Pest control, e-commerce delivery of ready to eat foods

29

etc. And similarly to execute these services many different parties are involved in the city like city authorities, civilian, law & order management people, visitors, tourists, manufacturer of goods, shippers, receivers of goods (retailer as well as end users), and transport operators. Their interests can be very different, but bring them on same concept of smart logistics increase the awareness before developing the city, incentivise their services and have dialogue with them can be very helpful to achieve right storage and distribution efficiency, which creates a win-win situation for all parties involved. Collaborative logistics management brings many service provider & stakeholders together and is an essential part of smart logistics: we will try to find the distribution management tools that cities can use to make logistics smart and sustainable. The vast growth of e-commerce industry, home delivery, order on phone, automated kiosk, service at wish, are pushing the limits of existing logistics network designs. More & more companies are experiencing issues related to last mile delivery of goods. So, Logistics networks will need to support smartly, increased intensity of deliveries, coordinate multiple

trans-shipment points; engage a wider range of vehicle technologies – including electric and autonomous vehicles – and support complex inventory balancing and deployment strategies apart from Challenges of weather conditions, natural calamities and technical failure.i

E-comm. Home Delivery: In a smart city, for home deliveries, multiple delivery attempts can be eliminated by having a pick-up point at each society near to security gate. This is not a new concept but can be made mandatory in each society of Smart City. It could be made further smarter if there is 1 Pick-Up points in radius of 2 to 3 KM with state of art facilities for all kind of parcel delivery depending on the average volume, we have post-offices today but with it should be state of art infrastructure to meet various kinds of needs and control a limited number of human traffic based on numbers of houses in that radius. Distribution of Fresh product: This is always a challenge to deliver a fresh product and allows a retailer to have more no of days to sell their product. But this can be avoided in smart cities by allowing fixed no of shops in a particular territory and allowing fixed no of cold storage in particular city by maintaining a certain distance criteria so that none of retailers are far away by more than 1 hour travel time. This cold storage will be part of hybrid collaborative warehouse centre where all companies can keep all kind of products. Replenishment of stock will be based on point of sale data and retailers order to Hybrid Collaborative warehouse. RFID Tags & GPS System: Goods sold and to be delivered are identified by RFID tags, from Mother warehouse to Hybrid Collaborative warehouse centre at smart cities to pick up point or retail store to final end user. All the buyers will be provided

cloud based web-link to track the goods online or can subscribe SMS service to have real-time update or can choose multiple points of update and after reach at that point user will get an SMS alert about the shipment. Similarly, the mother warehouse or factory will also get real time of traffic incidents through GPS device fit into Truck. Manufacturer can divert the vehicle by knowing real time product demand through various cluster and point of sales data. In case of problems with initial route the transporter can ask for a new route or can select new route based on options given by mobile technology subject to managers approval.

BiG Data uses in Logistics: Smart cities will be predominantly designed on basis of household data, Sensors, Cloud technology, IoT etc. to Balance SPEED, ACCURACY, SUSTAINABILITY, COMFORT and Economy of scale & good Governance. Big data is large sets of unstructured data, which can be collected in realtime, analysed or stored, managed, and further analysed with Smart City systems to facilitate public needs as well as use for good governance. Big data can also

be useful to define logistics strategies based on actual consumer patterns & consumptions. Logistics planner can use big data algorithms to fine tune route planning based on real-time in store sales (through point of sales data) & online sales & delivery location.

Collaborative Supply Chain: In childhood, parents used to teach about sharing and its benefit, which applicable at large scale too and in our logistics as well. 3PL industry has grown up due to one of this reason as well. The sharing of logistics, human and physical resources will help to optimise the serve ultimate customer. The constraints of sharing can be eliminated by today's technology and used at large scale in smart cities for smart logistics Solutions. Collaboration can be start from shared production, distribution, trade and services by different organisations. This collaboration could be in many of forms, derive by technology to empower individuals, companies, service providers and government to communicate to share and reuse of excess capacity in goods and services. Demand – Based: Considering volatile economy, predicting demand analysis will not work now days. It will be good if we can switch it to Demand Signals as the basis of production and replenishment planning. Customer Segmentation: Warehouse and Distribution System can be used to optimise the cost and reduce the traffic & CO2 emission.

Logistics Infrastructure: Smart logistics can be incorporate in smart cities in its infrastructure itself. Design of road (Dedicated lane for, cycle, bike, car, City Bus, Goods Career vehicle, Pipe Lines, Ring Roads etc.), Pick-up points, Hybrid Collaborative warehouse, sewer lines, Waste Management, Paper waste, Food waste, Non organic waste & Germs Free waste Management etc. And, all these necessary activities we can do through our best logistical way-out like Consolidation of Loads, Optimization of routes, Multimodal transportation, Real time Route optimization & Real time demand prediction. Partner Logistics, Cambridgeshire This frozen food warehouse in England was built at a cost of â‚Ź50 million, and more than 5 000 tons of steel were required to complete construction. Given that its roof stretches a dizzying 36m into the sky, the warehouse can store up to 77,000 pallets at any time, at temperatures as low as -27°C. As with many distribution centres of its kind, this cold storage warehouse is fully automated, which helps to reduce risk, save time and maintain the internal temperature. The warehouse was built for Lamb Weston Meijer, the potato processing giant.

5

US Army, Camp Carroll, South Korea While the military might not immediately strike one as a major player in the warehousing industry, the fact remains that even armies need a place to store their goods. Camp Carroll in South Korea boasts an area of more than 32 000m² and is used to store military vehicles, including Abrams tanks, Bradley Fighting Vehicles and other vehicles comprising the Heavy Brigade Combat team. The twostorey warehouse is humidity controlled and will save the military millions of dollars in the future: Army vehicles are usually stored outside, which leads to annual repair costs of nearly $2 million.

Warehousing & Logistic industry needs a major sea change to combat untoward food grain crisis and to meet any food emergency in the world. A huge gap between the demand and supply of logistics &,Warehousing services, which have been left unattended due to the unorganised nature of the market, has opened up many opportunities for players. However, increasing competition and introduction of global best practices by certain companies are forcing Indian businesses to rethink on the importance of warehousing processes and the resultant benefits of managing an efficient supply chain. Warehouses play a critical role in this process for reducing the losses in the food grains in India and hence were conventionally set up in 70s and 80s as

supply chain so that any major food grain crisis may not arise. But India Warehousing and logistic industry needs attention on the following matters to bring new and advanced thinking for achieving food grain sufficiency and to protect the Indian national from any unforseen drought or any unpredictable food grain crisis in the world. 1 Poor maintenance and no up gradation of storage technology is a giant barrier. 2 Use of solar energy for developing cool storage(not the cold storage) is the need of the time. 3 Use of radiation technology along with underground storage technology are still a far distant dream. 4 Mechanisation and automation are not gaining grounds because of unemployment and age old labour laws. 5 The losses in commodities are mainly attributed to poor infrastructure as well as insufficient storage infrastructure to the tune of 300,lakh MT. 6 Lack of manpower having knowledge of managing and maintaining premises. 7 in efficient scientific processes along with not following the principle of FIFA (first in first out) are the key reasons for the losses. 8 Beside no change in age old technologies as the insects and the other pests are becoming resistant to insecticides and fumigants day by day and progeny by progeny . 9 There is no research done, 10 There is no premier research institution for upgrading of technologies to reduce the losses.

Railways to increase focus on container transport

INR 17,073 cr worth Railway projects in progress in state The Railways intends to focus on containerized traffic and will allow many more commodities to be carried in containers, barring coal and minerals, said Ambrish Kumar Gupta, Additional Member Traffic, Railway Board, in a conference on 'Last Mile Logistics', organized by Global Knowledge Forum and the Railway Ministry here recently. Railway sheds will soon be permitted to handle container traffic wherever feasible, routes limiting access to ports will be strengthened, and parcel traffic will also be opened to container train operators. The Association of Container Train Operators (ACTO) whose representatives participated in the forum, however, called for lower rates, especially reduced haulage charges, to facilitate the operators carrying more cargo and providing assured traffic in order to effectively compete with road transport.

CIDCO to set up a major logistics hub at JNPT port The City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) is mulling setting up a logistics hub in the periphery of the port as the neighbourhood has witnessed unplanned expansion in activities that would result in massive traffic congestion in Navi Mumbai. The newly planned hub would be set up on a 414 hectare area in the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust Influence Area (JNPTIA). The new hub would consist of 64 container freight stations (CFS) and warehouses. At present, an economic feasibility report is being prepared by CIDCO for acquiring the land for setting up the logistics hub. A CIDCO official said, The 414 hectare land for the hub would be surrounding three villages of Chirle, Belondkhar and Jasai near JNPTIA. It is a tentative location and the economic feasibility report is awaited. The decision was taken after a study conducted by CIDCO revealed that not only Navi Mumbai, but Urantaluka and the Navi Mumbai Airport Influence Notified Area (NAINA) would also see huge snarls. According to CIDCO officials, the present port activities are being undertaken in an unplanned manner by stacking the empty containers into a private land that they have purchased. A CIDCO official said that “The logistics hub would bring about a systematic parking yard for the containers

The major growth was contributed with addition of 8 lakh tonnes of POL, 6 lakh tonnes of imported coking coal and 6 lakh tonnes of other cargo like imported lime stone, dolomite. About 60% of the extra 2 mt of cargo came from non-mechanised cargo operations in the monsoon which actually helped the port to achieve the record cargo handling incidentally, in the 4 months (April— July) of 2016-17, the port handled 28.65 MT of cargo compared to 24.34 MT in the corresponding 4 months of FY2015-16 witnessing a growth of 17.75%, it said. Gateway Terminals India starts continuous gate-in service for exports Gateway Terminals India Limited (GTIL) at the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), as part of its ease of doing business has introduced continuous gate-in service for exports resulting in a cost benefit of INR 2,000 per container. With this, GTIL has become India’s first terminal to offer such a facility. It means that exporters can deliver containers instantly at the terminal for the next shipping cycle, even when there is an existing vessel docked at the terminal for the current cycle. Generally, terminals close their gatein services for the next shipping cycle for about 24-36 hours when a ship is docked and till the loading and unloading process is completed for that vessel. Shipping cycles are weekly. So terminals allow container cargo for the current shipping cycle to be delivered at a particular cut-off time. Once the unloading and loading process is completed for the docked vessel and only upon sailing of the vessel, the gatein facility the next vessel cycle opens. But GTIL has changed that. Ravi Gaitonde, COO said, “Now a truck loaded with a container need not have to wait either on the road side or at the buffer parking lot for the shipping cycle. It can come directly and drop the box and go. The gate is open 24 hours and free of

Chennai Port to strengthen infra to handle car exports

According to Cyril C George, Chairman of the Chennai Port Trust, Chennai Port will strengthen its infrastructure to handle cars for coastal movement and exports. Addressing media persons after handing over the wharfage charge refund of INR 19.69 crore for 2015-16 to YK Koo, Managing Director, Hyundai Motors India, he said Hyundai Motors has consistently been the largest exporter of cars from India. The car manufacturer has charted out expansion plans which will further strengthen the relationship with the Chennai Port as a channel for its growing exports. The Korean car manufacturer and the Chennai Port have a long-term agreement that provides for the annual refund of a portion of wharfage charges. Since 2006 Hyundai has exported over 2 million cars and received a total refund of INR 165 crore, said a press release from the Port. destinations. It is modernizing the port with paved storage areas to provide a clean environment. Car exports will be a growing segment and the port has adequate back up space to handle the growing volumes, he said. Koo said Hyundai Motor India apart from being a hub for export of small cars, which is a huge segment, also exports larger cars including the Creta. In 2015 it had exported about 1.67 lakh cars and in the current year it hopes to sustain exports though the number could be slightly lower due to market conditions in some of its export destinations. Port officials said coastal movement of cars is bound to take off as it is cost effective and more environment friendly as compared with road movement. However, some issues need to be sorted out. The first attempt earlier this year could not be sustained as the car carrier was not filled to capacity and some concession issues had not been sorted out at the destination port. Chennai Port had been fully supportive.

KPMG will submit final report to Visakhapatnam Port Trust (VPT) on its proposal to construct multi-modal logistic park in a few days. VPT Chairman M.T. Krishna Babu said that The draft report found an area of 106 acres owned by us as most suitable for development as a world-class logistic park.” KPMG experts were shown 400 acres identified by the State government near Anakapalle and 106 acres owned by VPT near the Visakhapatnam International Airport during their visit to the city. He said that “They have zeroed in on the 106-acre land located between the airport and the Port Connectivity Road.” Krishna Babu said they would develop it as a Free Trade Zone after roaring success to such notified areas in Mumbai and Chennai to encourage export import trade. Warehousing and other facilities will be created for cargoes like timber, food products and chemicals, which will have assured market. Port-based industries will be promoted in the vicinity. One has to pay customs duty and take material away as they will be entitled to several tax exemptions due to grant of Free Trade Zone status. The project near the airport might necessitate construction of a flyover to ensure hasslefree movement of throughput. The site earmarked near Anakapalle by the government was not found viable as it

involved spending of nearly Rs.200 crore for having connectivity with the Railways and National Highway. As the width would have come down to 40 metres, the port would have needed another 200 acres adjacent to the area to make the project viable as per the draft report of KPMG. Container Corporation of India (CONCOR) is developing another MultiModal Logistic Park with an investment of INR 370 crore at Vimannagar close to the airport on an area of 100 acres given by the port on a 30-year lease to handle 0.3 million Twenty Foot Equivalent Unit (TEU).

Shipping Ministry outlines Subsidy scheme for Ship Building Industry Maritime Agenda 2010-20 has interalia set a target to increase percentage share of India to 5% in global ship building and 10% share in global ship repair for India by 2020. The Government of India had earlier extended shipbuilding subsidy scheme to all Indian shipyards on 25th October 2002. The scheme expired on 14th August 2007.
