2010 Football Prospectus
2010 2007 Preview Overview
The Lenoir-Rhyne Football Team made its biggest leap forward last season under fourth-year mentor Fred Goldsmith. The Bears improved their record for the second straight season as they jumped from 3-8 in 2008 to 5-6 last year. However, L-R could have easily won a few more contests and proved it can go toe-to-toe with every team in the South Atlantic Conference. With at least seven starters back on both the offensive and defensive units, LenoirRhyne’s goal of a winning season for the first time since 1994 could be very much realized in 2010.
Offense
Lenoir-Rhyne’s run-heavy offense continues to put up prolific numbers. Last year, L-R rushed for its most yards since 1975 as it averaged 294.3 per contest. That number ranked second in the nation. A lot of the Bears’ rushing success can be attributed to the performance of their offensive line. The unit, one of the strongest on the squad, needs to replace two starters but welcomes back junior right tackle Chandler Rearden (Greenwood, S.C.). Rearden took a medical redshirt last year and looks to return to his 2008 form which saw him earn First-Team All-South Atlantic Conference honors. A healthy return by Rearden would help the Bears’ prospects immensely. L-R also brings back senior center Chad Thacker (Burlington, N.C.) and senior right guard Everett Tucker (Brunswick, Ga.). Thacker has been a starter since the middle of his freshman season and shouldn’t have any problems moving from left tackle to center and replacing all-league honoree Harrison Smith. Tucker, meanwhile, played admirably in his first season on the offensive line in 2009 after moving from the defensive side of the ball. Senior Jamie O’Briant (Durham, N.C.) takes over at left tackle and there is a good battle brewing at left guard between sophomore Kaleb Myrick (Loganville, Ga.) and sophomore Parker Murray (Ninety Six, S.C.).
Junior fullback Byron Darby led L-R in rushing yards last year with 651 while averaging 7.2 yards per carry and earning preseason all-league honors in 2010.
Although L-R’s offense has undoubtedly increased its production over the last few years, the team still feels it needs a stronger passing attack for better balance. The Bears are looking for their receivers to step up and are counting on junior Nick Stutts (Statesville, N.C.) and sophomore Artis Gilmore (Asheville, N.C.) to take the lead. Both players could start this season. Stutts finished second on the squad last year in catches (nine) and yards (153) and has a dependable set of hands. Stutts is also in position to see his production increase this fall and the Bears would surely take advantage of it. Gilmore showed flashes of potential last season and should play more consistently in 2010 with a year under his belt. Senior tight end Devan Pointer (Burlington, N.C.), who led L-R in receptions (15) and yards (186) last season, is the most experienced receiver back and enters this year as a First-Team Preseason All-SAC honoree. Health is a major issue for Pointer and the Bears are hoping for a full recovery entering summer camp.
The backfield is once again filled with depth, talent and experience. The halfback tandem of seniors James Pone (Wilson, N.C.) and Andrew Courman (Beaufort, N.C.) can match up with anyone in the league. Both players have rushed for over 1,000 yards in their careers and were impressive last year with each averaging over seven yards a carry. Courman, who finished third on the squad in 2010 with 544 yards rushing and four touchdowns, was named to the allleague preseason second team. L-R is also set a fullback with junior Byron Darby (Gastonia, N.C.). One of the fastest players on the squad, Darby led the Bears in rushing yards (651) while averaging 7.2 yards per carry and scoring a team-high five touchdowns. Darby, an all-league preseason honoree as well, has the ability to become one of the most formidable runners in the league. Junior halfback Jasper Thomas (High Point, N.C.), junior fullback Le’Quan McCorkle (Sherrills Ford, N.C.) and sophomore halfback Anthony Thwaites (Mooresville, N.C.) may all be listed as second on the depth chart but should see a lot of playing time with Lenoir-Rhyne’s penchant for rotating running backs. For the first time since 2005, LenoirRhyne will not have the services of Justin Sanders behind center but are confident junior Major Herron (Kingsland, Ga.) can take over the starter’s spot full time. Herron has seen a lot of action in his first two years with L-R and his dual-threat ability works well in the Bears’ system. However, Lenoir-Rhyne needs Herron to be more consistent and take on more of a leadership role. Waiting in the wings is sophomore Reuben Haynes (Commerce, Ga.), a promising young player whose strength comes in his ability to run. Haynes averaged close to seven yards a carry last year and will battle Herron at the outset of preseason camp.

2010 2007 Preview (cont.) Defense
Just as the offense took a giant step forward two years ago, the defense did likewise last season. As a whole, Lenoir-Rhyne’s defense played as well as it has in recent memory and looks to continue its ascension in 2010. Despite the loss of Michael Green, the secondary looks like a strong point for the Bears entering camp. Senior safeties Marcus Shuford (Newton, N.C.) and Carl Brooks (Raleigh, N.C.) are both entering their fourth years as starters. Shuford, a First-Team All-SAC honoree, led the squad in tackles last season at his free safety spot with 76 and has developed into one of the best players in the league. Brooks, the strong safety, is all about production and last year was no different as he finished with 47 tackles and two interceptions. Brooks was honored with a spot on the preseason all-league squad. Junior Cam Thompkins (Sanford, Fla.) moves over to safety after playing his first two years as a cornerback and gives the Bears experience in the secondary. Thompkins tied for the team lead in interceptions with three in 2009. Junior Jamont Jones (Washington, N.C.) had a coming-out party for the Bears last season in his first year as a starter at one of the cornerback spots. Jones (39 tackles and an interception) still has a lot of upside and could be looking at a breakthrough campaign in 2010. Either LeBrandon Banner (WinstonSalem, N.C.) or Justin McCombs (Newton, N.C.) is expected to take over the cornerback position vacated by Green. Both players are juniors. Banner played sparingly last season while McCombs moves over to the defensive side of the ball after playing wide receiver the last two seasons. The linebacker corps remains nearly intact and the Bears expect to see marked improvement from the group. Junior outside linebacker Richard Walker (Loganville, Ga.) anchors the trio after garnering preseason all-conference accolades. Walker totaled 41 takedowns last year and the coaches think he can establish himself as one of the best defensive players on the squad.
Probable Starting Lineup
Junior defensive lineman Nelson Bullard earned All-SAC Preseason Second-Team honors this fall after tallying 32 tackles and 2.5 pass break-ups in 2009.

Manning the other outside linebacker position will be sophomores Chris Carter (Jamestown, N.C.) or Cle-Artiss Davis (Miramar, Fla.). Both players were pleasant surprises last year as freshmen and should continue to improve. Both inside linebackers return this year in senior Victor Nito (Douglas, Ga.) and sophomore Demetrius Green (Cedartown, Ga.). Nito came into his own last year and finished second on the team in tackles with 63 while Green took over in the latter half of the year and ended up with 32 takedowns. Green is another young player with a lot of promise. The defensive line will get a makeover with the loss of seniors Scottie Armstrong and Keonte Davis but do have some talent waiting in the wings.

2010 2007 Preview (cont.) Junior Nelson Bullard (Shelby, N.C.) stepped in right away last season at defensive end and made his presence known. Bullard (32 tackles) earned all-league preseason accolades in 2010 and looks to anchor a young unit. Two other sophomores – Brandon Martin (Roebuck, S.C.) and Jason Arenillas (Hollywood, Fla.) – look to fill the void left at defensive tackle and nose guard, respectively, for the Bears. Both players enter their third year with the program and should be ready to go. Junior Mike Harold (Newton, N.C.) and sophomore Evan Black (Stone Mountain, Ga.) give the Bears depth on the line.
Special Teams
Lenoir-Rhyne needs to replace its punter (Matt Corbin), but welcomes back two-year starter Colin Corpe (Ocala, Fla.), a junior placekicker, and return man Jamont Jones. Corpe hopes to return to his freshmanyear form in which he earned All-SAC First-Team accolades while Jones is knocking on the door for all-league recognition. Jones is effective at returning both kickoffs (28.2-yard average and one score) and punts but the Bears will also lean heavily on Artis Gilmore for a two-pronged attack. Gilmore returned a kickoff for a touchdown last season as well. Freshman Spencer Linquist (Newton, N.C.) might get the nod at punter but L-R will also look at Corpe or Major Herron.
Schedule
For the fourth straight year, LenoirRhyne hosts six games at Moretz Stadium including the first three contests of the season. L-R welcomes Chowan (August 28), Concord (September 4) and Davidson (September 11) before traveling to North Greenville (September 18) for its first road contest of the year. Lenoir-Rhyne hosts Mars Hill on Homecoming October 9, and closes out the regular season at Moretz Stadium against long-time rival Catawba on November 13. The Bears’ toughest road task may take place on November 6, when they travel to Jefferson City, Tenn., to face the Eagles of Carson-Newman. The Eagles finished 11-3 last year, won the SAC Championship and advanced to the national semifinals.

Shuford led L-R in tackles in last year with 76 to go along with six pass break-ups, one interception, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. Shuford, a two-time all-league honoree, has accumulated 230 takedowns and nine interceptions so far in his Lenoir-Rhyne career at his free safety spot. In addition, Smith was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III College Division Team.
Rushing Prowess
As mentioned earlier, the Bears finished second in the country in rushing last year (behind Carson-Newman) and averaged its most rushing yards on the ground since the 1975 campaign. In addition, eleven different players scored on the ground for L-R in 2009.
Conference Leaders
Lenoir-Rhyne led the South Atlantic Conference last fall in fourth-down conversions (60.9) and time of possession (32:38).
Holding The Lead
In three of their six losses, the Bears held double-digit leads. L-R opened up leads of 28-7, 42-21 and 49-32 before falling to Wingate (Oct. 10), 50-49, and sported a 13-3 advantage over CarsonNewman (Oct. 17) in the fourth quarter before falling, 17-13.
The 2009 campaign marked the final season for Justin Sanders (No. 12) and Harrison Smith (No. 60), a second-team all-league pick last season. Finally, Lenoir-Rhyne lost to Newberry, 2421, on October 31, after holding a 21-3 lead in the second quarter.
