2011 Football Prospectus

2011 2007 Preview Overview

The Lenoir-Rhyne University Football Team enters a new coaching era this fall in one of its best positions in a long time. L-R Head Coach Mike Houston, who became the 18th mentor in school history in May, inherits a team coming off its first winning season since 1994. The Bears finished last year with a 7-4 record and a 4-3 mark in the South Atlantic Conference to go along with rousing victories over Carson-Newman and Catawba to end the season. No stranger to L-R, Houston has been the team’s defensive coordinator the past four years before being elevated to head coach following the retirement of four-year mentor Fred Goldsmith. Although much will remain intact including most of the coaching staff, Houston will put his own stamp on a program which returns 52 letterwinners and 18 starters. The Bears are now finally set to make a legitimate run to the league title.

Offense

The Bears are entering their fourth year running the flex bone offense and the numbers keeping improving each season. For the first time since 1994, L-R averaged over 400 yards of offense (401 ypg) including an NCAA Division II-leading 319.5 yards per game rushing in 2010. Much of the ground game’s success goes to the work up front. This year’s offensive line is shaping up to be one of the best in a long time as all five positions return players who have made a number of starts. Anchoring the unit is senior right tackle Chandler Rearden (Greenwood, S.C.). Rearden, who earned All-American honors by a host of publications last season, became the first player in school history to win the Jacobs Blocking Trophy. The trophy is given annually to the top offensive lineman in the conference. The Bears’ right side will also feature junior guard Kaleb Myrick (Loganville, Ga.). Myrick came into his own last year and earned All-SAC honors for his performance. Although L-R loses Chad Thacker at the center position, the Bears appear to be in good shape with sophomore Zach Howell (Burnsville, N.C.).

Senior Jamont Jones, a 2011 Second-Team All-SAC Preseason pick, finished with 50 tackles last year and should be L-R’s top cornerback and return man this fall.

Howell earned valuable playing time starting at right guard in 2010 thanks to a couple of injuries and more than held his own. The left tackle and left guard positions should be manned by sophomore Parker Murray (Ninety Six, S.C.) and sophomore Zack Bunn (Lucama, N.C.), respectively. Murray was more or less a starter off the bench last season and the versatile thirdyear player was plugged in anywhere the Bears needed him along the front. Bunn got his feet wet in 2010 after taking over the left tackle spot in the latter half of the year and will now move to guard. Senior center Jeremy Smith (Moore, S.C.) and senior left tackle Jesse Johnson (Burnsville, N.C.) are two of LenoirRhyne’s top reserves on the offensive line. Once again, Lenoir-Rhyne would like to get more production from its passing game despite the play of senior wide receiver Nick Stutts (Statesville, N.C.). Stutts was, by far, the Bears’ top option through the air as he finished with 544 yards receiving on 35 catches and two scores. Stutts also earned all-league preseason honors this fall for his performance. An outstanding blocker with sure hands,

Stutts has developed into one of the most important, all-around players on the squad. Junior Artis Gilmore (Asheville, N.C.) gives the Bears another option at wideout and the team would like to see his production increase. Meanwhile, junior tight end Jared Thompson (Statesville, N.C.) has a lot of potential but is unproven. L-R has always been able to rotate running backs in and out thanks to a stable of versatile and talented players in the backfield. However, Lenoir-Rhyne will have to dig deep into its reserves this year and ask several newcomers to step in with the loss of All-American Le’Quan McCorkle and four-year starters Andrew Courman and James Pone. Senior fullback Byron Darby (Gastonia, N.C.) looks to regain his form from two years ago when he led the squad in rushing (651 yards in 2009). Darby, a 1,000-yard career rusher, hopes to respond to an increased work load this year. Redshirt freshman Isaiah Whitaker (Salisbury, N.C.) has chance at cracking the starting line-up at fullback and could make an immediate impact. Senior Jasper Thomas (High Point, N.C.) takes over one of the two halfback spots while junior Justin Wynn (Brevard, N.C.) gets first chance at the other. Both players have seen action in the past but will now carry more of the load. Thomas, one of the fastest players on the squad, has been especially productive despite injuries. For his career, Thomas has rushed for 517 yards while averaging 7.2 yards per carry and eight touchdowns. Redshirt freshman Josh Justice (Belmont, N.C.) and sophomore Graham Duncan (Gainesville, Ga.) are penciled in as the next line of halfbacks and should see plenty of touches but the Bears may lean on several newcomers as well. Quarterback is another position of strength with the return of the team’s top two signal callers. Senior Major Herron (Kingsland, Ga.) became the full-time starter last season and developed into one of the most productive quarterbacks in the league. Herron finished with 1,712 total yards (a team-high 883 on the ground and 829

Junior Reuben Haynes (Commerce, Ga.) is a more-than-capable back-up who led L-R to a season-ending victory over Catawba last fall. Haynes has a lot of speed and gives the Bears a different option on offense.

Probable Starting Lineup

Defense

Lenoir-Rhyne’s improvement as a team coincides with its steady progress on the defensive side of the ball. Last year, L-R led the league by a wide margin in total defense (276.6 ypg) and finished fourth nationally in rushing defense (75.7 ypg) and third in sacks (39). The Bears now field one of the top units in the league and it starts with the group up front. The Bears have fielded a strong defensive line in recent seasons and this year will be no exception with every starter returning. L-R’s defensive front is led by pair of all-conference honorees in junior defensive tackle Brandon Martin (Roebuck, S.C.) and senior defensive end Nelson Bullard (Shelby, N.C.). Martin, a First-Team All-SAC pick last year and preseason All-American this fall, led the team in sacks (7.5) while Bullard finished with 31 tackles and six quarterback sacks. Junior Jason Arenillas (Hollywood, Fla.) had a solid first season starting at nose guard last year and is looking for a breakout campaign in 2011. Junior Evan Black (Stone Mountain, Ga.) and sophomore B.J. Woodley (Charlotte, N.C.) are two of L-R’s top reserves on the defensive line. At linebacker, junior Demetrius Green (Cedartown, Ga.) returns after finishing second on the squad in tackles (75) en route to first-team all-conference honors. Green anchors a unit which also returns junior Chris Carter (Jamestown, N.C.), who has a knack for making plays as he finished with 28 tackles, 2.5 quarterbacks, two fumble recoveries and one interception last fall. Carter will head up the outside linebacker position while Green and either sophomore Jeff Haney (Auburn, Ga.) or sophomore Justin Bacon (Waynesville, N.C.) will man the inside spots for the Bears.

Senior wideout Nick Stutts led the Bears with 544 yards receiving on 35 receptions and two touchdowns last season and was a preseason all-conference honoree in 2011.

Juniors Cle-Artiss Davis (Miramar, Fla.), who finished with 30 tackles and five sacks last year, and Doug Ellis (Powder Springs, Ga.) will battle for first-string duties at linebacker once preseason camp arrives. Sophomore Zach Long (Advance, N.C.) was one of Lenoir-Rhyne’s top newcomers last season and should move into the “Bandit” position for the Bears. Long finished with 27 tackles and three sacks in 2010 as a defensive back. The secondary will have to try to make up for the loss of safeties Marcus Shuford, last year’s South Atlantic Conference Defensive Player Of The Year, and Carl Brooks but the Bears appear to have several players waiting in the wings. Free safety looks to be taken over by sophomore Michael Green (Kingsland, Ga.).

2011 2007 Preview (cont.) Green looks to return to his 2009 form when he was one of the Bears’ best defenders with 50 tackles and three interceptions. Senior Richard Walker (Loganville, Ga.) moves into the strong safety position after playing linebacker the past three years. Walker (42 tackles in 2010) brings athleticism and experience to the table as he starts for the third straight year. Senior cornerback Jamont Jones (Washington, N.C.), a four-year starter, looks to end his career in fine fashion. Last season, Jones totaled 50 tackles and two picks and could see those numbers improve even more. Jones also earned preseason all-league honors this fall. The other cornerback, senior LeBrandon Banner (Winston-Salem, N.C.), had a nice coming-out party in 2010 in his first season starting. Banner (41 tackles last year) and Jones give the Bears a formidable cornerback duo. Senior safety Cam Thompkins (Sanford, Fla.) has seen time as a starter in each of the past three seasons and gives L-R a much-needed reserve this fall. Thompkins is also one of the most experienced players on the team. Sophomore defensive backs Quintin Gay (Concord, N.C.), Ryan Sanford (Sanford, Fla.) and Chris Christian (Wadesboro, N.C.) all left spring ball second on the depth chart and each hopes to improve after promising first years.

Special Teams

L-R’s special teams should be solid with the return of both the punter and kicker in addition to its top return man. Sophomore Spencer Linquist (Newton, N.C.) had a solid first season punting (38.4 yards per punt) for the Bears and should only get better while senior placekicker Colin Corpe (Ocala, Fla.) looks to regain the form that earned him first-team all-league honors as a freshman in 2008. Corpe has a chance to become the school’s all-time leader in scoring for kickers this year as well. Jones has handled return duties for the past several years and should get help from Michael Green and Gilmore this season. Copeland has the nod at long snapper while sophomore Brett Boyles (Ararat, N.C.) takes over as the holder.

Schedule

For the first time since the 2005 campaign, the Bears’ schedule will feature 10 games including four at Moretz Stadium. All of Lenoir-Rhyne’s non-conference games will take place on the road starting off with the season opener at Concord (September 3). The Mountain Lions finished 8-3 last season. L-R’s home slate includes Carson-Newman (September 17), Brevard (October 8) for Homecoming, Wingate (October 29) and Newberry (November 5). The Bears defeated the Eagles last season for the first time since 1978 while the Bulldogs are coming off their first-ever South Atlantic Conference Regular Season Championship.

Junior Reuben Haynes gives the Bears a lot of depth at the quarterback position and the signal caller led L-R to a season-ending win over Catawba in 2010.

Lenoir-Rhyne caps off the season against long-time rival Catawba (November 12) in Salisbury, N.C. The Bears and Indians have met 90 times and L-R has beaten Catawba two of the last three times on the road.

Mike Houston became the 18th Head Football Coach in Lenoir-Rhyne’s history when he was hired on May 9, 2011. Houston just wrapped up his fourth season as Lenoir-Rhyne’s Defensive Coordinator and Secondary Coach. Under Houston’s leadership, the Bears’ defense had one of their best seasons in recent memory in 2010. Last fall, Lenoir-Rhyne led the South Atlantic Conference in total defense (276.6 ypg) and finished fourth in NCAA Division II in rushing defense (75.7 ypg). In addition, senior defensive back Marcus Shuford (Newton, N.C.) became the third player in school history to win league defensive player-of-the-year honors. On February 4, 2010, Houston was elevated to Assistant Head Coach. Houston came to Lenoir-Rhyne after spending one year (2006) as the Associate Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator at Brevard College. At Brevard, Houston was part of a staff that re-established football after a 56-year absence. The 2006 Tornado squad won two games while playing a roster comprised of true freshman. Prior to Brevard, Houston served as the Head Coach at T.C. Roberson High School in Asheville, N.C., from 2001-05. Under Houston, T.C. Roberson went 42-18 (5-4 in the playoffs) and was a two-time TimesNews Area Coach Of The Year (2002 and ’04).

Houston was also named an Assistant Coach for the 2005 North Carolina Shrine Bowl staff and helped lead North Carolina to a 28-24 win over South Carolina. Houston’s 2004 T.C. Roberson squad was his best-ever, as the team went through the regular season undefeated and finished 13-1 before losing in the state semifinals. The 2004 team averaged 38 points per game while allowing just nine points per outing as it won its first-ever conference championship in school history. Houston left T.C. Roberson with the highest winning percentage of any coach in school history and helped establish the Rams as one of the top football programs in the state of North Carolina. Houston, who was a 2005 Shrine Bowl Assistant Coach, spent five years as T.C. Roberson’s Defensive Coordinator (19962000) before taking over the head job. Houston started his coaching career at Forbush High School in East Bend, N.C., where he served as Falcons’ Defensive Coordinator (1994-95). Houston is a 1994 graduate of Mars Hill College with a bachelor’s degree in biology and played tight end on the Lions’ football squad Houston is married to the former Amanda Owen and the couple has one child, Owen Michael, who was born on December 1, 2008.

Lenoir-Rhyne Continues To Be Home, Sweet Home Lenoir-Rhyne led the South Atlantic Conference in attendance last season as the Bears averaged 6,010 fans per contest. A total of 36,057 fans attended a football game at Moretz Stadium including a seasonhigh 7,247 against Mars Hill on Homecoming (October 9, 2010). The Bears have led the league in attendance in eight of the last nine years.

All-League Honorees

Six players earned All-South Atlantic Conference honors for the Bears in 2010. Junior offensive lineman Chandler Rearden (Greenwood, S.C.), sophomore defensive lineman Brandon Martin (Roebuck, S.C.), sophomore linebacker Demetrius Green (Cedartown, Ga.) and senior defensive back Marcus Shuford (Newton, N.C.) were named to the first team. Meanwhile, sophomore offensive lineman Kaleb Myrick (Loganville, Ga.) and junior defensive lineman Nelson Bullard (Shelby, N.C.) earned second-team all-conference accolades.

Rushing Offense: No. 1 In The Land

Lenoir-Rhyne led NCAA Division II in rushing last season as it averaged 319.5 yards per game. The output is also a school record, breaking the 1975 mark of exactly 300 yards per contest.

Defense Rules

L-R’s defense was, by far, the best in the league last season. Its average of 276.6 yards per game was 82.5 yards better than the secondranked unit in the conference.

Finally, A Victory Over The Eagles

In addition to being the top rushing team in the nation, Lenoir-Rhyne also ranked third in the country in quarterback sacks (39) and fourth in rushing defense (75.7 ypg).

For the first time since 1978, Lenoir-Rhyne handed Carson-Newman a loss. The Bears defeated the Eagles by a 52-14 score on November 6, 2010, in Jefferson City, Tenn., to snap a 31-game losing streak against Carson-Newman. Ironically, L-R also clinched its first winning season since 1994 on the same day.
