Overview
We hope you will find the 2012 Lenoir-Rhyne Football Prospectus helpful as you cover the Bears and the South Atlantic Conference. If we can be of assistance to you, please let us know. The following i nformation should be useful for members of the working press planning to cover Lenoir-Rhyne home games at Moretz Stadium.
Press Passes
Passes for the working press should be obtained from the Sports Information Office in advance of game day. Credentials will be limited to working media only. If media credentials are not mailed, they will be available at will call.
Parking
Press parking at Moretz Stadium is available on a limited basis at the north end of the practice football field behind the press box. Requests for parking passes must be made well in advance of game day through the Lenoir-Rhyne Sports Information Office.
Press Box
The press box is located atop the west stands of Moretz Stadium and will accomodate approximately 44 persons and two radio broadcast crews. Only members of the working press, visiting coaches and scouts with credentials and official representatives will be allowed access to the press box. Refreshments will be available in the press box just prior to the game.
Radio
Visiting radio crews should request permission to broadcast games from Moretz Stadium through the Sports Information Office. A courtesy line will be provided to visiting radio stations, but they will be responsible for all long distance calls.
Media Guide
The entire 2012 Lenoir-Rhyne University Football Media Guide will be available online only at www.lrbears.com.
The L-R Sports Information Office will provide game programs, flip cards, notes and cumulative statistics prior to kickoff. Statistical summaries and play-by-play sheets will be distributed at halftime and a complete statistical packet will be available following the game. Telephones, a copier and a fax machine are available on a first-come, first-serve opportunity.
Sidelines
Sideline passes can be issued to photographers representing newspapers, bona fide college publications or other periodicals. Please request those passes well in advance of game day.

Get up-to-the minute information on the Lenoir-Rhyne Football Team and the other 19 intercollegiate teams on the internet. The address is www.lrbears.com. Rosters, notes and statistical information can be found with a click of a mouse.
Web Audio
All Lenoir-Rhyne football games, free of charge to the school and the listener, will be broadcasted over the internet in 2012 at www.lrbears.com. Special thanks to Red Zone Media (www.redzonemedia.com) for providing this opportunity.

Members of the media are welcome at most Bear practices. Players and coaches are generally available for interviews before and after practice. Please contact the sports information office for practice time and football personnel availability.
Weekly Press Conference
Coach Mike Houston and selected staff and players meet in Lenoir-Rhyne’s Cromer Center for the athletic news conference every Tuesday at Noon during the football season.

Broadcast Information
In the summer of 2008, Lenoir-Rhyne signed Kicks 103.3 WKVSFM as the new football broadcast partner. Kicks 103.3 WKVS-FM is part of the Foothills Radio Group which includes The Bluegrass Station 1080-AM and News Talk WJRI 1340AM. The station covers all or portions of Caldwell, Catawba, Burke, Lincoln, Watauga, McDowell, Avery and Alexander Counties and is celebrating its 19th year on the air. Davy Crockett, who is currently the Program Director of the Foothills Radio Group, will once again serve as the play-by-play man (“Voice Of The Bears”) while Jack Huss returns as the color analyst and Ju Ju Phillips is back as the sideline reporter.

2012 2007 Preview Overview
After years of steady progression, L-R finally reached the top of the South Atlantic Conference once again last fall. Under first-year Head Coach Mike Houston, the Bears claimed their first league title in 17 seasons in 2011. Lenoir-Rhyne (7-3 overall and 6-1 in SAC play) hit stride during the latter half of the season and ended the year on a four-game winning streak. L-R was a deep and experienced squad last season but will need to replace several players at key positions. The Bears have also built up their reserves in terms of quality and quantity and should be comfortable moving younger players into more prominent roles in 2012. Lenoir-Rhyne also welcomes back 18 starters including seven on both the offense and defense so the cupboard is still full and the squad will be tested by opponents who could see the Bears as a new power in the conference.
Offense
Lenoir-Rhyne is firmly entrenched with its flex bone offense now and the results have been impressive although subtle changes are expected every year. After a slow start in 2011, the Bears kicked it into gear by the end of the season including a stretch of 50-plus points in three straight games. L-R averaged close to 400 yards per game (397.0 ypg) and produced its highest-scoring offense (33.6 ppg) in 17 seasons. One of the reasons for Lenoir-Rhyne’s offensive explosion late in 2011 was the play of the halfbacks, particularly junior Corron Boston (Durham, N.C.). Boston came on strong and finished the year third on the team in rushing yards (564) while averaging 7.3 yards per carry last fall. Boston also scored seven touchdowns and earned All-SAC Preseason Second-Team honors this summer. Starting opposite of Boston should be junior Graham Duncan (Gainesville, Ga.), a versatile player who made the most of his touches last year. Duncan’s role grew last season and he should be more than able to handle an increased workload in 2012. Duncan was especially effective as a receiver, catching four passes for 123 yards (30.8 yards per catch) and two scores.

Sophomores Greg Baker (Woodbine, Ga.) and Jarrod Spears (Bunnlevel, N.C.) should also be in the halfback rotation. Baker gives the Bears experience while Spears could be a game-breaker with his speed. L-R appears strong at fullback with the return of sophomores Isaiah Whitaker (Salisbury, N.C.) and Chris Robinson (Newnan, Ga.) and the addition of sophomore newcomer Austin Beaty (Friendsville, Texas). Whitaker finished second on the team in rushing last year with 815 yards to go along with six touchdowns en route to All-SAC Second-Team accolades while Robinson showed promise in his first season with the Bears. Beaty, a transfer from Navy, figures to be in the mix as well. Despite the loss of two-time All-American and Jacobs Blocking Trophy winner Chandler Rearden, Lenoir-Rhyne looks good once again up front with the return of four starters. At right tackle, redshirt freshman Joe Ray (Atlanta, Ga.) broke out of spring practice as the leading candidate while junior Marcus Byrd (Hickory, N.C.) will push for playing time.
The Bears appear to have a battle at right guard with junior Parker Murray (Ninety Six, S.C.) and senior Kaleb Myrick (Loganville, Ga.) entering preseason vying for the starting duties. Murray is a versatile player who has stepped up for the Bears when needed as both a starter and a reserve while Myrick hopes to return to his form from two years ago when he earned all-conference honors. Myrick wasn’t close to 100 percent as injuries plagued him last fall. Murray is also expected to back up junior Zach Howell (Burnsville, N.C.) at center. Howell enters his second year as the starting center and has played extensively since his freshman season. Sophomore Ethan Ricci (Holly Springs, N.C.) and junior Zack Bunn (Lucama, N.C.) are penciled in as the starters at left guard and left tackle, respectively. Ricci performed admirably after moving into the starting lineup last season while Bunn has solidified himself on the line as he enters his third year as a starter. The line paved the way for Lenoir-Rhyne to finish third in NCAA Division II in rushing last fall at just over 287 yards per game. At wide receiver, the Bears are looking at senior Artis Gilmore (Asheville, N.C.) to replace Nick Stutts as the squad’s top threat through the air. Stutts has been L-R’s No. 1 receiver the past four year but Gilmore (16 catches for 167 yards last seaons) has play-making ability and looks to end his career on a high note. Lenoir-Rhyne will also look for production from senior wide receiver Justin McCombs (Newton, N.C.), who has been with the program since 2008. L-R senior and second-year starter Jared Thompson (Statesville, N.C.) once again gets the nod at tight end entering preseason camp. Fifth-year senior Reuben Haynes (Commerce, Ga.) moves into the starting lineup at quarterback, replacing all-league honoree Major Herron. Haynes has proven his ability to step in and lead the Bears to victory but now takes on a whole new role as the full-time starter after waiting in the wings for three years.

Probable Starting Lineup
Defense
Lenoir-Rhyne has developed, by far, the best defense in the South Atlantic Conference. The Bears’ defense is filled with speed, size, athleticism and experience and is anchored by three preseason All-Americans in 2012: senior defensive lineman Brandon Martin (Roebuck, S.C.), senior linebacker Demetrius Green (Cedartown, Ga.) and junior defensive back Michael Green (Kingsland, Ga.). Martin, a defensive tackle, has developed into a force on the line and anchors a group which also returns senior nose guard Jason Arenillas (Hollywood, Fla.) and junior defensive end B.J. Woodley (Charlotte, N.C.). Martin finished with 26 tackles last year and has totaled 14 quarterback sacks over the past two seasons while Arenillas and Woodley both finished with 16 takedowns in 2011. Arenillas could be pushed by sophomore Blake Baker (Bethlehem, N.C.) and Woodley has enough potential to replace Nelson Bullard, a three-year starter. The linebacking corps could be one of the strongest units on the squad this fall as Lenoir-Rhyne returns all four starters and most of its reserves beginning with Demetrius Green, the 2011 SAC Defensive Player Of The Year. Demetrius Green topped the Bears in tackles last season with 77 and was a big reason L-R led the South Atlantic Conference in total defense (284.4 ypg) once again by a wide margin. Sophomore Tanner Botts (Lawrenceville, Ga.) will team with Demetrius Green on the inside. Botts developed into one of the top defensive newcomers in the league last season and finished fourth on the squad in tackles with 49. Senior outside linebackers Chris Carter (Jamestown, N.C.) and Cle-Artiss Davis (Miramar, Fla.) are also back.

2012 2007 Preview (cont.) Either junior Ryan Sanford (Sanford, Fla.) or junior Zach Long (Advance, N.C.) should take over the strong safety spot. Both players have seen significant action over their first two seasons and the coaches are looking for either one to step up and fill the void. At cornerback, junior Chris Christian (Wadesboro, N.C.) has been waiting in the wings for the past several years and now has a chance to show his ability as a starter while L-R will look at sophomore Joe Anderson (Lilburn, Ga.), a converted running back, at one of the other spots. Don’t be surprised if one or several newcomers step in and contribute immediately in the secondary as Lenoir-Rhyne looks to shore up the defensive backfield.
Special Teams
The Bears had one of the best special teams units in the conference last year and will need to replace only their placekicker entering the 2012 campaign. The kicker’s spot could be decided between senior Zach Neumann (Mechanicsville, Md.) or redshirt freshman Devin Southerland (Easley, S.C.), a transfer from Coastal Carolina University. Either way, someone will need to replace Colin Corpe. Corpe finished as the Bears’ all-time leading scorer as a kicker. Senior punter Brad Winters (Redding, Calif.) had a fine first season with LenoirRhyne in 2011, averaging 39.1 yards per punt, and could challenge for all-league honors this fall. Michael Green also earned All-SAC and All-American accolades as a punt returner and became a game-breaker last season as he led the league in return average (18.0 ypr) while returning two punts for scores in 2011. Duncan (29.2 ypr) looks to take over the reigns as kickoff return man full-time from the graduated Jamont Jones. Junior Brett Boyles (Ararat, N.C.) and senior Chad Smith (Chickamauga, Ga.) are back as the squad’s holder and long snapper, respectively.

Lenoir-Rhyne’s schedule is once again challenging as the Bears face three teams who earned a berth to the NCAA Division II Playoffs: Concord (September 1 at 7:00 p.m.), North Greenville (September 29 at 7:00 p.m.) and Mars Hill (October 20 at 2:00 p.m.). The Mountains Lions (7-4 and WVIAC Champions last fall) host the Bears for the second straight year in Athens, W.Va., in the opener. North Greenville (11-3) advanced all the way to the national quarterfinals while Mars Hill (8-3, 6-1) shared the SAC crown with Lenoir-Rhyne and earned a bye in the playoffs.
Lenoir-Rhyne junior Michael Green earned All-American honors last year as a return man after returning two punts for touchdowns in 2011.
L-R also hosts long-time rival Davidson (September 8 at 7:00 p.m.) in its home opener and Tusculum on Homecoming (October 13 at 2:00 p.m.). Lenoir-Rhyne wraps up the regular season once again at home against Catawba at 2:00 p.m., on Saturday, November 10. The two squads have met 91 times and the Bears have won the past three meetings between the two schools. L-R’s road trips also include CarsonNewman (September 15 at 1:00 p.m.), Brevard (October 6 at 1:00 p.m.), Wingate (October 27 at 1:30 p.m.) and Newberry (November 3 at 2:00 p.m.). The Bears and Wolves play for the Bishops Trophy, the annual battle between the two Lutheran schools in North and South Carolina. L-R beat Newberry last year to retain the trophy for the first time since 2005.

Mike Houston is entering his second year as Lenoir-Rhyne’s Head Football Coach this fall. In his first season at the helm in 2011, Houston led L-R to a 7-3 record (6-1 in the South Atlantic Conference) and guided the Bears to their first league championship since 1994. For his efforts, Houston was named the SAC CoCoach Of The Year In addition, Houston remained in charge of the Bears’ defense which once again led the conference in total yards allowed (284.4 ypg), 10th-best in the nation. Houston became the 18th Head Football Coach in Lenoir-Rhyne’s history when he was hired on May 9, 2011. Before being elevated to head coach, Houston was the Bears’ Defensive Coordinator and Secondary Coach for four seasons (2007-10). Under Houston’s leadership, the Bears’ defense had one of their best seasons in recent memory in 2010. Two years ago, Lenoir-Rhyne led the South Atlantic Conference in total defense (276.6 ypg) and finished fourth in NCAA Division II in rushing defense (75.7 ypg). In addition, Marcus Shuford became the third player in school history to win league defensive player-of-the-year honors. On February 4, 2010, Houston was elevated to Assistant Head Coach. Houston came to Lenoir-Rhyne after spending one year (2006) as the Associate Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator at Brevard College. At Brevard, Houston was part of a staff that re-established football after a 56-year absence. The 2006 Tornado squad won two games while playing a roster comprised of true freshman.
Prior to Brevard, Houston served as the Head Coach at T.C. Roberson High School in Asheville, N.C., from 2001-05. Under Houston, T.C. Roberson went 42-18 (5-4 in the playoffs) and was a two-time Times-News Area Coach Of The Year (2002 and ’04). Houston was also named an Assistant Coach for the 2005 North Carolina Shrine Bowl staff and helped lead North Carolina to a 28-24 win over South Carolina. Houston’s 2004 T.C. Roberson squad was his best-ever, as the team went through the regular season undefeated and finished 13-1 before losing in the state semifinals. The 2004 team averaged 38 points per game while allowing just nine points per outing as it won its first-ever conference championship in school history. Houston left T.C. Roberson with the highest winning percentage of any coach in school history and helped establish the Rams as one of the top football programs in the state of North Carolina. Houston, who was a 2005 Shrine Bowl Assistant Coach, spent five years as T.C. Roberson’s Defensive Coordinator (1996-2000) before taking over the head job. Houston started his coaching career at Forbush High School in East Bend, N.C., where he served as Falcons’ Defensive Coordinator (1994-95). Houston is a 1994 graduate of Mars Hill College with a bachelor’s degree in biology and played tight end on the Lions’ football squad Houston is married to the former Amanda Owen and the couple has two sons: Owen Michael and Reid Wilson.

Two All-Americans
The Bears produced two NCAA Division II All-Americans in 2011: Chandler Rearden (Greenwood, S.C.) and return specialist Michael Green (Kingsland, Ga.). Rearden (2008, 2010-11) leaves Lenoir-Rhyne as one of the most decorated offensive linemen in school history. Rearden earned All-American honors for the second straight year last season and won the Jacobs Blocking Trophy for the second consecutive season in 2011. The award is given annually to the top offensive lineman in the South Atlantic Conference. Green, a rising junior, earned All-American accolades as a return man after leading the league in punt return yards (18.0 yards per return) in addition to returning two punts for scores. An outstanding all-around athlete, Green earned All-SAC honors last fall as both a return specialist and defensive back.
Rushing Prowess Continues
Lenoir-Rhyne’s flex bone offense continued to put up impressive numbers on the ground. After leading the nation in rushing two seasons ago, the Bears ranked third in NCAA Division II this past fall at 287.1 yards per game. The Bears’ ground game picked up in the second half of the season as they averaged 355 yards per contest in the last five outings. Offensively, L-R averaged close to 400 yards per game (397.0 ypg) in 2011.
Scoring Machine
L-R led the league in scoring offense (33.6 ppg) thanks to a surge at the end of the year. For the first time ever, Lenoir-Rhyne scored over 50 points in three straight games: Oct. 22 vs. Mars Hill (51-21), Oct. 29 vs. Wingate (5228) and Nov. 5 vs. Newberry (54-42).
Home, Sweet Home
For the ninth time in the past 10 years, Lenoir-Rhyne led the South Atlantic Conference in attendance. In 2011, the Bears averaged 7,225 fans per game for a total of 28,900 who passed through the gates of Moretz Stadium. L-R’s 33-27 triple-overtime win over Brevard on October 8, 2011, was witnessed by a seasonhigh 8,047 fans. L-R also went undefeated (4-0) at home last fall for the first time since 1993.
Lenoir-Rhyne’s Chandler Rearden was named the 2010 and 2011 Jacobs Blocking Trophy winner, given annually to the top offensive lineman in the SAC.
All-SAC Honors
Eight members of the Lenoir-Rhyne Football Team earned All-South Atlantic Conference honors in 2011 including six on the first team. The first-team all-league members for the Bears included quarterback Major Herron (Kingsland, Ga.), Rearden, Michael Green (as a defensive back), placekicker Colin Corpe (Ocala, Fla.), linebacker Demetrius Green (Cedartown, Ga.) and defensive lineman Brandon Martin (Roebuck, S.C.). Herron was the first Lenoir-Rhyne quarterback to be named to the All-SAC First Team since Joel Roope in 1991 while Rearden was named to the all-conference first team for the third time in his career. Meanwhile, Demetrius Green was the second straight Bear to be named the SAC Defensive Player Of The Year. Marcus Shuford earned the honor in 2010.

For the second straight year, Lenoir-Rhyne led the SAC in total defense (284.4 ypg) by a wide margin. Carson-Newman (318.8 ypg) had the next best defense in the conference in 2011.
