Remember the Second “R”... REUSE When it comes to green behavior, the preferred course of action is to reuse a product. This applies to printer cartridges too as most can be refilled or remanufactured. Here are some interesting facts:

• It takes about a gallon of oil

to make a new laser cartridge.

• Almost eight cartridges are thrown away per second in the United States.

• In North America

alone, over 350 million cartridges per year are discarded in our landfills, increasing by 12 percent annually.

• Each

remanufactured laser cartridge saves nearly 2.5 pounds of metal & plastic waste from being deposited in landfills.

• A laser cartridge thrown into

a landfill can take up to 450 years to decompose. Some components that are made of industrial grade plastics will take over a thousand years to decompose.

• In one year, if the world’s

discarded cartridges were stacked end-to-end; they would circle the earth over three times. What does this tell us? That after a product has reached the end of its useful life, it should be reused.

Something to take a good hard look at as we consider ways to ensure sustainability within our communities. Brought to you by the Lee’s Summit Chamber of Commerce’s Business Sustainability Committee

Sales Tax Holiday Set for August 5-7 Parents of school-aged children in Lee’s Summit take note and get ready to save some green. The Sales Tax Holiday is just around the corner. Beginning at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, August 5, and running through midnight Sunday, August 7, school apparel, supplies and many electronics will not be subject to city and state sales tax. This is the fifth year that the City of Lee’s Summit will participate in the Sales Tax Holiday after the City Council overwhelmingly approved their participation in May of 2007,

thereby waiving the city sales tax on those eligible back-to-school items. This means that items such as articles of clothing, supplies, computers, computer software and computer peripheral devices, and other electronic devices will receive the tax break. For a complete listing of the items that are eligible for the sales tax exemption and the limits on certain items, check out the Missouri Department of Revenue website at http://dor.mo.gov/tax/business/sales/ taxholiday/school/.

Join members for a special “Dog Days of Summer” Chamber Before Hours on August 23 from 7:30–8:30 a.m. at AAA Insurance & Travel, 621 NW Murray Road. Guests are encourage to bring pictures of their dogs not the dog. Winners will be selected for different categories and can win prizes. CBH is a great way to rise and help your business shine. Your Dirty Little Secret... If dust bunnies have taken up residence in your computer, the longevity and function of your system can be compromised. This is even more of a concern for those who eat and drink around computers, work outdoors or in dusty conditions. Some basic care of the housing and peripherals can help your system last longer. To get started with cleaning, get a microfiber cloth, cotton swabs and rubbing alcohol in your cleaning kit. Keyboard: Unplug from the computer,

shake gently upside down to remove any crumbs and dust, and then use a cotton swab lightly dipped in rubbing alcohol to clean the sides and top of the keys. You can also use short bursts of compressed air (available in cans from electronic/office stores) to blow dirt from the keys. If liquid spills on the keyboard, immediately unplug it and turn it upside down, blot as much of the liquid as possible and leave to air dry (don’t use a heat source to dry it). Mouse: For a trackball style, remove the back cover and ball, wipe down the rollers to remove any built up dirt or lint.

Saint Luke’s Quality Care— Right Here at Home As a member of Saint Luke’s Health System and accredited as a Primary Stroke Center, patients needing heart or stroke care at Saint Luke’s East-Lee’s Summit have access to advanced protocols offering faster recovery times and fewer complications. And we’re no. 1 in patient satisfaction.

Additionally (and with other style mcie) gently wipe down the casing and the pads on the bottom. Make sure that the surface it is sitting on is clean and free from dust and dirt. Monitor: A gentle wipe down with a microfiber cloth is recommended. Don’t spray any substances directly on the components. CPU: It is not recommended that you remove any housing to your laptop or CPU, but a gently wipe down with a microfiber cloth is recommended. For more information and further help in this area, consult your trusted IT advisor. by Kristen Johnson, Ultreya Solutions Group Brought to you by the Lee’s Summit Chamber’s Technology Committee
