Chamber to Award Four $1000 Scholarships to High School Seniors Each year the Lee’s Summit Chamber of Commerce Education Committee awards $1000 scholarships to four high school seniors. One scholarship winner is selected from each of the three Lee’s Summit high schools, and one is selected from a school outside of the district. One of the applicant’s parents must be an employee of a Chamber member. Applicants are evaluated based on the following criterion: • A strong work ethic • A commitment to community involvement • An endless pursuit of continued growth and improvement in all facets of their lives

Members Making Waves Southeast Enterprises Wants to Make Your Trash Their Treasure Southeast Enterprises is collecting used, tangled, broken, working or not, strands of holiday lights. Southeast Enterprises will take the lights, recycle them and keep them out of the landfill. Chamber members can drop their lights off at the Lee’s Summit North Recycling Center, 1951 NE Douglas, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. or Saturday 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Donations will be accepted now until January 28. After collecting the lights, Southeast Enterprises will have their teams

of Jackson County citizens that are intellectually and developmentally disabled prepare them for recycling by cutting all lights from cords, sorting recyclable materials and taking those materials to the proper facilities for reuse.

Over 1200 Pounds of Food Collected at Holiday Reception A very special thank you to all of our members who collectively donated more than $260 cash and over 1200 pounds of food for Lee’s Summit Social Services at the Holiday Reception on December 7. Each year the Chamber and Economic Development Council collect donations at the event for the less fortunate. Once again the giving spirit of

our members was evident. The donations were delivered to Lee’s Summit Social Services and were very much appreciated. Thanks again to the generosity of our members.

Community Health Fair & Legacy Park Community Center’s Birthday Bash Lee’s Summit Parks & Recreation, in conjunction with the Lee’s Summit Chamber of Commerce, will host Legacy Park Community Center’s Birthday Bash and Community Health Fair on Saturday, January 14 from 7 a.m.–5 p.m. at Legacy Park Community Center, 901 NE Bluestem Road. The event is free and open to the public. The Lee’s Summit Chamber Health Fair, held from 9 a.m.–noon, consists of health information and free health screenings from area hospitals and health focused businesses. New this year to the Health Fair is a Teddy Bear Check-Up Station. Encourage your children to bring in their favorite doll or animal for a full work-up to guarantee their good health for the new year. The 9th Annual LPCC Birthday Bash, hosted by Lee’s Summit Parks & Recreation, will be open from 7 a.m.–5 p.m. Guests can enjoy all the amenities in the facility plus take advantage of some special highlights including chair massages and a fitness expo. Nominations Being Accepted for 2012 Res In Motus Awards The Lee’s Summit Chamber is calling for nominations for the 2012 Res In Motus Business of the Year Awards. The Chamber is recognizing five separate award categories that best represent Business in Motion: • Sanctimonia Award- Non-Profit/ Charitable. (Over 50 employees enter in Magnus Category) • Vegrandis Award- 5 or less full-time equivalent employees. • Parvus Award- 6-20 full-time equivalent employees • Medius Award- 21-50 full-time equivalent employees • Magnus Award- over 50 full-time equivalent employees

Recognize a Teacher in a Special Way Each year the Chamber’s Education Committee and the R-7 School District collaborate to recognize educational excellence. The Chamber and school district partner to honor 12 annual Excellence In Teaching Award recipients at an evening reception where the Teacher of the Year is announced. This program is designed to focus on the role of the teacher and their overall dedication to service and excellence in the profession. Twelve teachers/ counselors/library media specialists will be recognized by the Chamber with the Excellence In Teaching Award. Those among the 12 who are full-time classroom teachers will also be finalists in the R-7 Teacher of the Year program. The Teacher of the Year is recognized as a representative of all the outstanding teachers in the district. The R-7 Teacher of the Year competes in the Missouri Teacher of the Year program, sponsored

by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, in conjunction with the National Teacher of the Year program. Consider nominating the individual who comes to mind when you think of the phrase ‘outstanding teacher’ for the Lee’s Summit Chamber Excellence In Teaching and the R-7 Teacher of the Year award. You may nominate your favorite Lee’s Summit R-7 teacher, library media specialist or guidance counselor by filling out an application available at www.leesummit.k12.mo.us. The deadline for applications is February 3, 2012. Please note that nominees must have worked for five years or more in the R-7 School District. 2012 Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Celebrate through musical and dance performances the City’s annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. event on Monday, January 16 in the Pavilion at John Knox Village, 520 NW Murray Road, Lee’s Summit. “Stone of Hope,” the theme of this year’s celebration, was chosen because of the monument recently dedicated on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. in honor of the life and legacy of Dr. King. The City’s 2012 celebration will begin earlier than in previous years to accommodate all of the great performances. The preshow begins at 5:30 p.m. with cultural exhibits from the Lee’s Summit R-7 School District and individuals from our community as well as a performance by the Lee’s Summit West High School Drumline. The celebration kicks off at 6 p.m. and

will include the following performances: Heritage Dance Ministry, El Grupo Atotonilco, Nartan Academy of Dance, and Pleasant Lea Middle School Black and Gold Choir. The national anthem will be performed by students from Lee’s Summit High School and the presentation of colors will be by the Lee’s Summit West High School Air Force Junior ROTC Color Guard. This year’s keynote speaker is Pastor Armour D. Stephenson III, a 2002 graduate of Lee’s Summit High School, and the pastor of City of Truth Church in Kansas City, Mo. The celebration will also include a videotaped reflection
