How LSCU & Affiliates Delivered in 2014 and What You Can Expect in 2015 Governmental Affairs Focused on legislative advocacy, grassroots advocacy, political action fundraising, regulatory advocacy, and compliance/operational support.

 

In 2014:         

Passed update to Alabama CU Act. First credit union-specific legislation passed in Alabama more than 20 years Helped Alabama become only the third state to pass “patent troll” law Worked with Florida Office of Financial Regulation to pass updates to state credit union act Helped Florida Attorney General’s office to update data breach notification laws Worked with Florida House Speaker to get state issued study on credit unions as public depositories Pushed legislation that would require Florida highschool students to take course in financial literacy before graduating Worked with Rep. Jeff Miller (R-FL) to introduce legislation to exempt veterans from MBL cap Title sponsor of Florida Gubernatorial debate seen by 4.8 million Floridians Implemented a risk-based capital plan that included 14 RBC informational sessions across both states

Secured 28 of 33 members of AL/FL Congressional delegations to sign RBC letter to NCUA Worked with AL/FL delegatons for all to vote in favor of HR 3468, the Credit Union Share Insurance Fund Parity Act (IOLTA) Alabama and Florida state ($354,050) and federal ($189,476) PACs reached 100 percent of goal for first time Contributed 100 percent of goal, $154,000, to CUNA/AACUL National Advocacy Fund Helped bring credit unions ComplySight, an online compliance tool

Looking Ahead to 2015: 

Be a strong advocate at the federal and state levels with an emphasis on the following issues:  Federal - Taxation, risk-based capital (RBC2), supplemental capital, overdraft protection, MBL (Miller Bill), regulatory relief  AL - Taxation, data breaches, public deposits  FL – Financial literacy, data breaches, public deposits, patent trolling

Education

Looking Ahead to 2015:

Focused on providing timely and relevant training to credit union staff and volunteers on a variety of topics.

In 2014:     

Rebranded LSCU Signature events to include “Southeast” in title as League expands educational offerings to include credit unions in the southeast Had record attendance at the Southeast Credit Union Conference and Expo (SCUCE) with 1,185 attendees and 135 vendor booths in expo hall Offered 116 webinars with more than 600 attendees from Alabama and Florida credit unions participating Trained more than 2,100 credit union staff through LSCU conferences and workshops Added additional expertise to staff to ensure educational offerings meet credit unions’ needs

  

Adding 90 more minutes of exhibit hall time to the 2015 SCUCE schedule. Educational breakout session topics to include cybersecurity, IT, and “How to Buy a Bank” Expanding the 2015 Credit Union Executive Dialogue to include the top 50 credit unions New workshops scheduled for 2015 include a technology workshop in Orlando and a fraud prevention workshop in Birmingham More than 120 webinars available in 2015, providing cost-effective training for every area of the credit union

How LSCU & Affiliates Delivered in 2014 and What You Can Expect in 2015 Cooperative Initiatives Focused on activities that reinforce credit unions’ cooperative spirit and social mission.

In 2014:      

Grew affiliation rate to 86 percent Grew Young Professionals Group (YPG) from 65 participants to more than 275 participants in 2014 Held four Small Asset Sized (SAS) conferences attracting 83 attendees representing 55 credit unions Provided $37,082 to SAS credit unions in the form of educational scholarships for LSCU and CUNA events or for LEVERAGE products 479 face-to-face meetings with credit unions made by Cooperative Initiatives team The Southeastern Credit Union Foundation (SECUF) and CO-OP Financial Services partnered to donate a box set of Biz Kid$ DVDs for all nine Children’s hospitals in Alabama and Florida Provided training session for the YPG on how to implement the BizKid$ financial education program in settings, including schools, community organizations, and member-focused programs SECUF awarded 37 Professional Development Scholarships totaling $35,375

 

 

29 credit union staff were trained as financial counselors by completing the FiCEP/REAL Solutions Program Presented CU Philosophy in Action Workshop highlighting the seven cooperative principles and encouraged credit unions to incorporate the cooperative principles into their orientations, staff training, and member education Hosted Costa Rican credit unions to educate them on lobbying, messaging, and day-to-day operations of credit unions Hosted a meeting with credit unions from Trinidad

Looking Ahead to 2015:    

Build greater participation in financial education programs and track credit union results Work with chapters to improve programming and attract broader audiences Complete implementation of Young Professional program in remaining chapters Develop Hispanic Outreach program to provide credit unions with tools and resources to increase membership in this demographic group

Communications Focused on providing communication channels that inform and educate.

In 2014:   

Third wave of the Cooperative Image Campaign ran in 2014 with a $1 million media buy. It ran for 12 weeks, the longest media buy to date Produced 51 original videos, an increase of 35 percent over 2013 Placed 59 stories in Alabama and Florida media outlets, 104 stories in credit union trade publications reaching eight million readers and viewers - 175 percent increase from 2013

 

Increased social media footprint by adding 33 percent more Twitter followers and 50 percent more Facebook followers Produced four mobile apps for LSCU Signature Education Events

Looking Ahead to 2015:  

Produce new Cooperative Image Campaign web videos for 2015 Develop a new, improved LSCU website

LSCU Financial Management The LSCU is committed to being good stewards of credit unions’ dues dollars.  Last year provided member credit unions with an 8.7 percent dues rebate of $282,676 and another $108,019 to Alabama and Mississippi credit unions as part of LEVERAGE’s CO-OP Patronage Dividend. The past two years, the LSCU & Affiliates has returned almost $800,000 to credit unions in the form of dues rebates and patronage dividends

How LSCU & Affiliates Delivered in 2014 and What You Can Expect in 2015 LEVERAGE Dedicated to the success of credit unions and the credit union industry by providing best-in-class products and services.

In 2014:   

Alabama and Florida credit unions earned more than $650,000 in marketing reimbursements through the Sprint Credit Union Member Discount Program CUNA Mutual Group provided $1.88 million in marketing reimbursements to the LSCU & Affiliates which benefitted Alabama and Florida credit unions Supported credit unions with more than $170,000 in sponsorships of chapter meetings, golf tournaments, lunch and learns, and fundraisers in Alabama and Florida CU Audit & Compliance Group (CUACG) conducted more than 430 audit procedures. CUACG continues to expand, now providing services to credit unions in Alabama, Florida, Tennessee, Mississippi, and Georgia Reconstituted human resources consulting solution, HRx, which assists credit unions with recruiting/ placement, background screens, confidential employee surveys, and salary administration Credit unions saved more than $700,000 on the purchase of office supplies through the Office Depot Cooperative Purchasing Program

New products launched in 2014 included: Ding Guard, a paintless dent removal service plan providing unlimited dent and ding protection for new or pre-owned vehicles, Member Security Center, an identity theft prevention resource for members, and CRIF, an indirect lending solution allowing credit unions to increase loan volume without adding additional resources LEVERAGE played a critical role in driving down purchasing costs for credit unions through Strategic Purchasing by saving more than $210,000

Looking Ahead to 2015:  

Provide timely subject matter, expert information, and trends regarding EMV, tokenization, and Apple Pay through LEVERAGE Card Services Continue to explore products and services that are relevant and valuable to credit unions in the current system environment
