INVESTING IN THE FUTURE Annual Fund report to donors 2013/14

1

MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR AND PRESIDENT It is my pleasure to introduce the LSE Annual Fund report to donors for 2013/14, and to thank you for the significant contribution you are making to School life. Alumni and friends around the world retain a lifelong connection with the School, and nowhere is this illustrated better than by you, the Annual Fund donor community. You help to ensure that LSE remains distinct – a world class and world leading social sciences university. Maintaining these standards of excellence demands that we have the best faculty working with and challenging the brightest minds on innovative initiatives in a campus fit for today and tomorrow. Through the 76 projects your gifts supported during the academic year, you make that possible. Thank you. LSE was founded on the back of a bequest and throughout its rich history philanthropy has remained at its core. It is part of our fabric, and in a changing higher education funding environment assumes ever greater importance. The School does not aspire to be a university for people who are privileged; brilliant students should be able to enjoy an excellent education because of their intellect and inquisitive minds, not their capacity to pay fees. We have a bold vision for the future of LSE that will ensure it continues to thrive and grow, while remaining true to its founding principles. Your participation through the Annual Fund is central to this, and from 2014/15 onwards we have identified four priority areas across the School to which you can direct your unrestricted gifts: Strategic initiatives – supporting key School projects such as the Institute for Global Affairs Student support – building on the 40 New Futures Fund scholarships awarded by the Annual Fund in 2013/14 Teaching and research excellence – developing innovative academic projects that characterise the School LSE student life – ensuring that an excellent classroom experience is complemented by all aspects of campus life I am grateful to you for the role you are already playing in the future of LSE, and hopeful that the examples from a broad range of projects that follow in these pages demonstrate the positive and reverberating impact your support has on School life. We greatly value you and all that you do for LSE. With warm wishes

Professor Craig Calhoun LSE Director and President Chairman’s Circle member

THANK YOU

I am proud of the contribution the Annual Fund makes to LSE life. Its impact is obvious in the numbers represented overleaf, which demonstrate that 76 projects were supported in 2013/14 and that gifts from over 3,000 donors totalled £818,000, a significant amount that will be invested across the School’s priority areas in the academic year ahead. Yet for me the real pride comes in knowing that the Annual Fund is about individuals – alumni and friends of the School all over the world – coming together to participate in something tangible that helps current and future generations of people at LSE. Our gifts improve people’s lives: we make it possible for students to accept their offer of a place at LSE, one of the world’s great universities; we help to ensure that they are taught by world class academics in a campus fit for the 21st century. We support a range of initiatives, and every gift plays a part in the big projects which cement LSE’s international reputation and position as a leader in social sciences. Through our support of the Annual Fund, we enhance the student clubs and societies that not just complement students’ academic development, but which can lead to friendships that last for the rest of our lives. It is our fund, and in these pages we show some of the personal stories behind the numbers – we hear from students, staff and fellow donors about why your generous support of the Annual Fund matters so much. Finally, thank you. To bring the numbers and the people into context, all 10,600 current LSE students will have benefited from your generosity at some point during the last School year: our gifts are at work across campus every day. That’s an impact of which I hope you are rightly proud. Together we are making LSE an even better place.

STUDENT SUPPORT

The provision of scholarships and bursaries is one of the most visible ways in which philanthropy helps to ensure that brilliant and inquisitive students can study at LSE regardless of their economic status. The School has always regarded education as a driver of social mobility and will continue to do so.

Since 2004 the Annual Fund has provided more than £750,000 in grants to the New Futures Fund to offer essential scholarship support to students who might otherwise be unable to accept their offer of a place at LSE. This support can be in the form of full or partial awards, and also includes “top-ups” to students whose other funding does not fully cover the cost of their tuition. More than 170 students have been able to focus on pursuing their studies and make plans for their future because of this support. Annual Fund donors are also helping students to access extracurricular activities that support their studies through the LSE Students’ Union

Travel Fund. During Michaelmas term, Aaron Kirunda, a visiting scholar, attended the Social Innovation Summit at Stanford University – a highlevel invitation-only conference aimed at bridging business innovation and social transformation. Since the course, Aaron has been working on establishing a collaborative relationship between LSE Department of Management students and peers at Stanford studying similar modules. In addition the LSE-UCT July School, a partnership between the School and the University of Cape Town, is benefiting from the second tranche of a three-year bursaries grant awarded by the Annual Fund.

I am a second year student from Lithuania. I am absolutely in love with LSE, London, my course and the societies that I have been a part of this year. There isn’t a single morning when I wake up and do not look forward to the day ahead. My LSE New Futures Fund scholarship supported by the Annual Fund made all of this happen. The Annual Fund has opened the doors to LSE for me, and LSE opens the doors to the world. So I’d like to say a huge thank you to all of you who have supported the Annual Fund and have opened the world to me and helped me grow into a better, stronger and more confident person. TEACHING AND RESEARCH EXCELLENCE LSE is proud of its reputation as a world class social sciences institution. To maintain these high ideals, the School’s teaching and research must continue to set new standards of excellence.

Rerum Cognoscere Causas – the School’s motto, “to understand the causes of things” – remains as relevant today as it did to the School’s founders: at LSE, inquisitive students taught by world leading academics and researchers propose tangible solutions to the challenges encountered by society. Graduates emerge from campus as questioning citizens who go on to make prominent contributions to civil, professional and public life. In 2013/14, the Institute of Public Affairs (IPA) is one example of the School’s commitment to combine teaching and research excellence with a wideranging public engagement programme. It was awarded £50,000 by the Annual Fund in support of its innovative Above the Parapet project. Through

the initiative, the gendered nature of high profile public life is being analysed and shared. The RCC Conference (its initialism drawn from the School motto already mentioned) saw academics, policy-makers, corporations and students exchange knowledge and discuss the challenges confronting European society. This year the Annual Fund has also provided significant support to the LSE “Europe in Question” Discussion Paper Series (LEQS), coordinated by the European Institute at LSE. LEQS will run until September 2015 and features high quality research on Europe and the European Union by LSE scholars and academics across the continent.

Gifts from alumni and friends to the LSE Annual Fund helped the IPA to launch its Above the Parapet project which characterises our commitment to public engagement. It is outside the traditional research activity of an ordinary university – and therefore typical research funding models – because it focuses on mobilising opinion to understand a problem and then do something about it. This work is not on our own private carousel; it is embedded in the world and accessible to everyone. Thank you – the Annual Fund made it possible. LSE STUDENT LIFE

When alumni recall their student days at LSE, many refer to the LSE student experience – the societies, special interest groups and activities that enhance campus life and complement their education.

Working closely with the LSE Students’ Union (LSESU) and its network of clubs and societies, the Annual Fund has this year invested in 51 student-focused projects that significantly enhance the LSE experience. Among the initiatives funded was the London 2030 Summit, organised by a team of London-born students, which brought industry leaders of today and the leaders of tomorrow to campus to share a vision for the capital city. The Third Polish Economic Forum – a continuation of the LSESU Polish Business Society’s excellent series – was once again a huge success. Almost 500 student delegates were joined by political leaders and industry heavyweights from Poland on campus. Evaluating the LSE experience is essential for the School to live up to the expectations placed on it by students. In July 2014, the Postgraduate Summer Festival united students, academics, alumni and

experts in the Higher Education sector for a discussion on Re-imagining Education. Moderated by Maria Carvalho and Chris Wood, LSESU’s Postgraduate Officers, participants discussed how their expectations of LSE had differed from the reality, looked at what undergraduates, postgraduates and research students want from their university experience, and analysed the impact of new technology on higher education. Social activities and sport are also integral to student life, complementing the education enjoyed by students at the School. This year the Annual Fund supported the LSESU Music Society, the LSE Dance Club and the Focus Team Project, which benefits a range of student sports teams by investing in coaching, facilities and resources that can help them to achieve more for their members. Its work is supported by a new gym in the Saw Swee Hock Student Centre, which opened officially this year with the help of over £400,000 of Annual Fund support since 2011.

Being at LSE gives us many privileges – a world class education, access to brilliant academics and speakers of credibility. We wanted to use this as a platform to bring industry leaders to the heart of the city to discuss their vision of the future of London. Our idea was just that – an idea – until the Annual Fund helped to ensure that our LSESU London 2030 Summit actually came to fruition. STRATEGIC INITIATIVES

Globally, higher education is becoming an increasingly competitive marketplace. To continue to attract the best students and faculty from all over the world, the School must constantly explore new ways of improving further what it already does, while remaining at the forefront of international social sciences.

The Annual Fund supports strategic initiatives which aid this process, such as the new Institute for Global Affairs (IGA) which recently came to life on campus. This is an umbrella institute housing a number of centres and initiatives – such as LSE IDEAS, the Middle East Centre and the forthcoming South Asia and Saw Swee Hock Southeast Asia centres. LSE’s commitment to global debate and public engagement is further demonstrated by the Africa Talks series, which the Annual Fund continues to support. The School has a long standing relationship with the African continent, with several African leaders having studied at LSE.

range of discussions and events that contribute to the School’s world renowned public lectures programme. Careers skills are key to student development. In 2013/14 the Annual Fund supported the LSE Careers-endorsed LSESU Training Opportunities Programme which delivered workshops linking to the seven key skills identified in LSE’s Personal Development Aide Memoir (PDAM), an online system recording all student non-academic activity that complements their professional development. Sessions were attended by almost 200 students and included public speaking, event management and campaigns.

The Annual Fund has supported our work by contributing significantly to our new Careers Resource Centre through its Friends and Family programme, and by sponsoring the workshops we helped to coordinate as part of the successful Training Opportunities Programme within LSESU. Sponsorship of our Volunteer of the Year event and brochure of case studies has once more allowed us to recognise the extraordinary contribution LSE students make to both local and international communities and provides a platform for further engagement with the charity sector. THE INSTITUTE FOR GLOBAL AFFAIRS (IGA) The IGA’s main areas of activity will be linked to investigating global processes of change across regions, continents and academic disciplines. It will from the very beginning be interdisciplinary in nature, drawing on the strengths that the School has across the social sciences. The IGA will promote LSE research and potentially advance teaching on major issues of global concern, build bridges between LSE and different parts of the world, and enhance the School’s role as a global university. It will engage senior officials, policymakers, people from NGOs and the corporate sector on critical issues relating to change in international society.

ALUMNI REUNION WEEKEND In July 2014, enthusiastic alumni returned to campus to celebrate the LSE Alumni Reunion Weekend. Graduates from as far afield as Nigeria, Pakistan and Canada joined their peers to reminisce and reconnect with the School.

Attendees enjoyed tours of campus, departmental sessions and lectures from leading LSE academics including professors Stuart Corbridge, George Gaskell and Conor Gearty, as well as a Welcome Reception hosted by LSE Director, Professor Craig Calhoun. A gala dinner at Middle Temple Hall rounded-off proceedings in style. Many alumni chose to mark their reunion year by contributing to their class gift, which records all gifts made by alumni in participating cohorts during the

14

academic year. This generosity helped to raise more than £130,000 throughout 2013/14 – a significant and gratefully received contribution to the Annual Fund. Alumni contributing to the class gift for their year are indicated by • in the donor roll that follows. Learn more about the reunion programme and plans for 2015 at alumni.lse.ac.uk/reunions

RECOGNISING OUR DONORS The impact of each individual gift made to the Annual Fund increases when joined with the thousands of other donations made each year. The collective support given by alumni, staff, parents and friends is highly effective and greatly appreciated by students and the LSE community.

To recognise and thank Annual Fund donors, a reception was held on campus in June. This event brought together Annual Fund donors and beneficiaries of Annual Fund awards. All who were present heard from students and staff who have benefited from and witnessed firsthand the impact your generosity has on their LSE experience. This followed two special leadership giving events that took place earlier in the School year: the annual Chairman’s Circle dinner, and the tenth anniversary Director’s Circle reception, which celebrated a decade of leadership giving.

The evening comprised a panel discussion between LSE alumni and Director’s Circle members, Nicholas Barr, Professor of Public Economics (BSc Economics 1965, MSc Economics 1967), and Dan Elliott (MSc Economics 1987), a leading consulting economist. Thank you to each and every person who has donated to the Annual Fund in the past year. Your support is a catalyst for progress and excellence at LSE, and is highly visible around campus: in the classroom, in new world class facilities, and in the student societies and clubs that enhance the student experience.

I thoroughly enjoyed the evening and it is a great pleasure and privilege to be able still (I graduated in 1952) to feel part of LSE. Thank you for the great work that you are doing – long may it continue. Douglas Cracknell (LLB 1952) Annual Fund donor

LEADERSHIP GIVING

The Annual Fund is fortunate to enjoy the support of individuals who annually make leadership gifts – donations of £1,000-£4,999 (Director’s Circle) and £5,000 or more (Chairman’s Circle).

16

Leadership giving has a profound impact on LSE. Donations between £1,000 and £4,999 are recognised through the Director’s Circle, while gifts of £5,000 or more see donors included as Chairman’s Circle members.

The Annual Fund has officially recognised leadership support for more than ten years through its giving circles. Gifts of £1,000 or more have had a huge impact on the success of the fund and its capacity to drive the School forward.

Gifts received at this leadership level form the cornerstone of the Annual Fund programme. While less than 10 per cent of all donors are members of these circles, cumulatively their support accounts for 60 per cent of all gifts received this year.

In the past five years Director’s and Chairman’s Circle gifts have totalled £2.23 million, giving the School additional flexibility to offer better provision of scholarships and bursaries, enhance teaching and research and significantly enrich student life.

CHAIRMAN’S CIRCLE

Donors whose gifts exceed £5,000 each year form the Chairman’s Circle, a generous community of alumni and friends making a leadership level investment in the future of LSE. Chairman’s Circle donors comprise less than two per cent of Annual Fund donors and contributed 31 per cent of its total income for the year.
