On Friday, Sept. 1, Julie Kane, former Poet Laureate of Louisiana, was the guest speaker at the Louisiana School for Math Science and the Arts Matriculation ceremony. Students, faculty, and family packed into A.A. Fredrick’s on Friday to cheer on the matriculates of 2014. The ceremony opened with the faculty of the Louisiana School, garbed in their academic regalia, marching into the hall with the musical accompaniment by the Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts Mixed Ensemble. Student Government Vice President, Shiva Velingker, lead the masses in the pledge of allegiance, followed by Julia Landon who had the honor of leading the National Anthem. Neel Reddy, student body president, then took the stand to present his welcoming speech. Ms. Kane, former Poet Laureate of Louisiana, is a current teacher at Natchitoches’ own Northwestern State University. She is also the recipient of various awards, most recently the Teacher of the Year award. Ms. Kane’s speech congratulated the matriculates on their decision to leave home and join LSMSA. She recognized the challenges and trials that they would face at LSMSA and extended this advice.
