Paint protection film and ceramic coating are popular solutions to protecting a vehicle's exterior paint from the wear and tear of public roads, highways, and days at the track. The two products work well on their own in preserving and protecting a vehicle's appearance, but also work well together.

When considering an investment in ceramic coating or paint protection film, it’s important to understand the differences between the two so you can make an educated decision. The first thing to know is that the two products are not comparable and thus not a true comparison to one another.

Paint protection film provides a urethane layer of protection against rock chips and scratches. Ceramic coatings, even when cured, are microns thick and not engineered to stop rock chips. That said, it is an excellent product for protection against environmental contaminates such as bird droppings, bug guts, and more. Not to mention that it makes cleaning off track rubber, road debris and environmental contaminants much easier.

Further, ceramic coatings are for customers who want some basic protection along with increased shine, gloss, depth of color, and great hydrophobic and self-cleaning properties. Paint protection film is for the customers who want actual protection against rock chips and scratches.

What is most common is to install paint protection film on the high impact areas of your vehicle (typically this is the full front end, a-pillars, roofline, backs of mirrors, and rocker panels). And then to ceramic coat everything including the PPF that way you get the best of both worlds. The protection from the PPF and the ease of maintenance and enhanced appearance of the coating.
