SEASON PREVIEW
BETTER THAN EVER For the LSU women’s golf team, the 2010-11 campaign is one they have been looking forward to for some time. First, the University Club is back and better than ever after a year’s renovation. The redesign of Jim Lipe with assistance from LSU All-American golfer David Toms is now a gem of a course that will challenge any college golfer. It’s a course college golfers will want to play and the best thing is that the Lady Tigers have this course to prep for tournaments. In the long run that will help make LSU better. Second, the Lady Tigers want to be so much better in 2010-11. They know how close they were to making the NCAA Championships for the third straight year in 2010. So expect the LSU women’s golf team to be one that is better when it come to the work ethic necessary to be that team that is better than ever.
RETURNEES Megan McChrystal enters her senior season with a chance to leave a big mark on the history of LSU’s women’s golf. She already has posted the only two season stroke averages under 73 in the history of the program, won three individual titles, and, had the round of a lifetime in the final round of the NCAA Championships. McChrystal posted nine birdies in an 8-under par round of 64 to set school, course and NCAA Championship single round records. The two-time All-American has the chance to be just the third golfer in LSU history to go to four NCAA Division I Championships. But what would be better than ever for her is the chance to experience it for the third time in four years with her teammates. There are four other seniors on the roster all who can contribute to help the Lady Tigers.

Nicole Crochet will wrap up her career in December when she graduates. She has been on a winning team lineup and has the ability to put together important scores for LSU when they may be needed most – early in the year. Senior Lindy LaBauve also was in the lineup when LSU won as a team during her time here and she has experience in top amateur events, making it to the finals of both the Women’s Southern Amateur and the Trans National. Abby Oberthier had her best career finish this past season with a tie for 19th at the Central District Invitational. She was

Abby Oberthier in the lineup for five events last season for the Lady Tigers. Amalie Valle has been a vital cog in LSU’s success from the time of her arrival from Norway. She has a three-year average of 75.7 and 12 rounds of par or better in her career. Valle had two important match wins in LSU’s march to the National Match Play Championship. For LSU’s two juniors, the 2010-11 season is a chance to add to resumes that have helped LSU to very successful campaigns the last two years. Jacqueline Hedwall has participated in every tournament in her first two years, averaging 76.6 strokes per round for 25 rounds last year. She has five top 10s at LSU, including a third in qualifying for the NGCA Match Play and then had a big win for LSU in a semifinal victory over Florida. She finished ninth in the Bryan National event with a two-over 218. Despite a setback in the fall from the flu, Tessa Teachman still had a strong season that earned her honorable mention All-American honors from Golfweek and second-team All-SEC selection. She won two matches for LSU in the team’s march to the match play championship, including a 6 and 5 decision in the final. She had three top 10s including a fifth in a field of 124 at English Turn in the Tiger-Wave Golf Classic at four-over 220. Teachman finished 12th in the league in stroke average. Sophomore Mary Michael Maggio made the most of a year in which she had to have shoulder surgery between semesters that would ultimately limit her play to just six events. She still averaged 76.4 strokes per round and won all three matches in the march to the Match Play

Championship after tying for eighth in qualifying. Austin Ernst is the newest member of the team and she arrives with quality credentials that include wins this year in the Vicki DiSantis Junior Girls’ Championship and an impressive 4 & 3 win in the finals of the Carolina Women’s Match Play Championship in which she posted a score of 7-under par. Ernst is a two-time AJGA AllAmerican and was 12th in the Sagarin Junior Girls Rankings at the time of her signing. SCHEDULE The season gets off in a strong way just like last year’s National Match Play event as LSU takes part in the NCAA Fall Preview at Bryan, Texas, at Texas A&M’s Traditions Course. The fall also features the usually low-scoring Mason Rudolph event in Nashville and a return for the first time in several years to the UNC Tar Heel in Chapel Hill. The fall concludes in November as LSU returns to Stanford for the new Pac 10/SEC Challenge. In the spring, the familiar opening event in Parrish, Fla. (Central District Invitational) sets sthe stage for events in Louisiana. Last year, LSU and Tulane combined to host an event at English Turn with the University Club under renovation and now both schools will again host events. The Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate is Feb. 27-March 1 at English Turn and then the LSU Golf Classic returns to the U-Club beginning March 11. A total of 21 teams will be on hand to see the LSU home course. The spring concludes with a return trip to the Liz Murphey event

in Athens, Ga. That leads to the post-season with the ultimate goal to get back to where the Lady Tigers started, College Station, Texas. THE INTANGIBLES Having a challenging course to play on a daily basis will help the team develop. Add that to an outstanding Golf House and practice facility and LSU’s setup rivals the best in the country. The Lady Tigers health will be important as well. Sickness and surgery limited LSU’s roster at times and the team never did have its best starting five fully operational at any time after the national match play championship. If anything will show that this edition of the Lady Tigers is back and better than ever, it will be a display of consistency throughout the season and the knowledge that when push comes to shove in an NCAA regional, they will be able to complete the task and get to the Division I Championships. The team may not admit it, but they remember how close they were last year and will do all they can to make sure it doesn’t happen again. New course. Solid lineup. Good schedule. Team chemistry. It’s all the ways that LSU’s Lady Tigers can be back and better than ever in 2010-11.

KAREN BAHNSEN HEAD COACH • 27TH SEASON
The enthusiasm Karen Bahnsen showed when Buddy Alexander handed her the keys to the LSU women’s golf program is the same enthusiasm and drive she shows today as she prepares to enter her 27th season as the head coach of the Lady Tigers. That drive and enthusiasm along with the way she coaches the very good roster of players she has at LSU is the combination that could get the Lady Tigers back to the NCAA Division I Women’s Championship for the fourth time in the last six years. It is part of the reason that Bahnsen is smiling and loving the fact that college golf season is here. She has had the drive, the determination and a willingness to succeed ever since she was a playing at LSU in the early 1980s, joining the fledgling program as its first signee. One can also say that those who have succeeded in this program are those that understand that same drive, that determination and a willingness to do whatever is necessary that Bahnsen preaches. Bahnsen knows what it takes to get to the pinnacle of women’s collegiate golf – the NCAA Division I Women’s Championship Tournament. She will ask her team to work hard and respond to the challenge, but it will be nothing less than she ever asked of herself as a player. If the players accept and understand, success usually follows. Now that message is being spread thanks to those who have worked and played for her. Two former assistants – Marci Kornegay (South Florida) and Golda Borst (Kentucky) are now head coaches, while former teammates Rebecca Kuhn (Kentucky) and Alexis Rather (LSU) have also joined the coaching fraternity as assistants. Bahnsen over the years has come up with a simple philosophy that she started using as a player. It’s so simple, but so amazingly effective when put into play. She wants her team to play each shot as a separate event. If something bad happens, forget it and move on. Don’t let it carry on for four or five holes. Most of all, she wants her players to have fun. When her players believe in it as much as Bahnsen does, they usually a) play strong team rounds or b) ground out a potentially disastrous round and turn it into a score the team can use. Both are important ingredients in a successful golf season. Bahnsen’s love and desire for a program she has devoted over

half her life is what also gives her a smiling satisfaction about a program she has virtually helped design from scratch. Plus, all these years of coaching has done nothing to slow her down. In fact, she is more energized than ever to make the program a continuing player in the national spotlight. How many programs are there in any sport in Division I intercollegiate athletics where the program’s first recruit goes on to become the head coach of the program and stays long enough to not only be the dean of league coaches in the sport, but also one of the longest tenured coaches in school history? Seems impossible, but when it come to LSU women’s golf there is one special lady who can recite the history of the program from day one. Suffice it to say, in college golf circles, she is one of the most respected individuals in the game today. That is why she was inducted in December 2008 in the National Golf Coaches Association Hall of Fame. From first recruit, to four-year player, to student assistant to head coach, it was a rapid but very successful transition from signing in 1979 to taking over as head coach prior to the 1984-85 season.

She has also done a fabulous job of changing as women’s college golf changed. Since her arrival at LSU in 1979, the sport of women’s golf has risen in talent and stature to the point that SEC championships and national championships are decided by mere strokes instead of one of two teams dominating a field. The list of stars from the SEC who have gone on to success in the sport continues to grow each year. Bahnsen is now joined by former LSU golfer Alexis Rather in the tenacious recruiting battle to find the best around for the LSU program and the results are showing with great success. Bahnsen has contributed her share of names to that list over her years as head coach. There was the nation’s No. 1 player, Jenny Lidback, in the mid-1980s, who led LSU to the NCAA Championship Tournament and then went on to become a major tournament

winner on the LPGA Tour. Also, from the 1980s, came Jackie Gallagher, a steady player who continues a long, successful career on the women’s tour. The “Three Amigas” signaled a new era in LSU women’s golf in the mid-1990s when the highly recruited trio of Ashley Winn, Michelle Louviere and Laura Moore led LSU to a succession of NCAA appearances (including a program best fifth place finish in 1998), a No. 1 ranking and nine tournament titles. Katy Wilkinson-Harris ended the 1990s with bookend All-American performances in her freshman and senior year. The 2000s opened with Shreveport’s Meredith Duncan brining LSU more national recognition by winning the U.S. Women’s Amateur title and helping her country keep the Curtis Cup in matches with Great Britain and Ireland. In 2005, senior Brooke Shelton became the fourth LSU golfer to finish in the top 10 at

the NCAA Championships, finishing a strong eighth in the individual competition. Kuhn and Rather, along with junior Caroline Martens helped LSU to two NCAA Championships in both 2006 and 2008 and now in the new decade, Megan McChrystal has earned two All-American honors and fired the lowest round in an NCAA Championship (64), while Tessa Teachman has earned All-SEC and honorable mention All-American recognition. The Lady Tigers are roaring on the national scene as a team as witnessed by their win in the NGCA National Match Play. So Bahnsen takes the LSU program into its 32nd season with the same dogged determination she has shown throughout her days as a player and through her years as head coach. The numbers show her success: 17 AllAmericans, 36 All-SEC, 31 tournament titles, 31 individual titles, 10 top three finishes in

the SEC championships, 16 appearances in the NCAA regionals, nine appearances in the NCAA Division I championships and five top-10 finishes in those nine events. She has coached two winners of the prestigious LPGA Diana Shore Award (Lisette Lee in 2000 and Meredith Duncan in 2002) and the 1986 College Player of the Year (Jenny Lidback). But let’s talk off the course as well. There have been 78 SEC Academic Honor Roll selections, 23 National Golf Coaches Association Academic Scholars, and for many years, the women’s golf team has had one of the highest GPAs for an athletic team at the school. Bahnsen’s golf team was recognized as just one of three teams at LSU this past year to earn an NCAA Public Recognition Award for exceptional work in the classroom. The awards are given annually to teams scoring in the top 10 percent in each sport with their Academic Progress Rate (APR). The public recognition awards in 2010 honored teams that posted APR scores ranging from 978 to a perfect 1,000. Throughout her years as coach and player, Bahnsen has looked at the big picture of her involvement in women’s collegiate golf and life as well. She knows nothing on the LPGA or Futures tour is guaranteed for any golfer. She knows what it is like to have a husband, a family and

the need to divide time between the coaching job and the family job. Her values on balancing both are what make her a special person and a coach players want to play for. Every year has brought new challenges and every time Bahnsen has answered that call. Every year, the desire to succeed is that much greater and that is what seems to continue to light the fire of the lady who knows LSU golf inside and outside, backwards and forwards. Bahnsen’s teams learn a lot about golf during their LSU days, but they also learn a lot about the ups and downs of sports. She doesn’t just go through the motions of being a coach. Bahnsen knows what the girls are going through with each shot they take and she feels their excitement and disappointments. She is there to congratulate, offer a tip when necessary and provide the consoling hands of sympathy when things don’t go the right way. It’s that style which has earned her the respect of her peers throughout the league and country. Bahnsen came to LSU with credentials that were excellent, lettering in golf at McGill Toolen High School in Mobile, Ala. She led McGill Toolen High School to two state titles and in 1979 won the state individual championship and the National High School Tournament. It seems obvious this lady was meant to be a top golfer and later a great golf coach.

HISTORY
Bahnsen’s mother was an LPGA teaching professional, a four-time Alabama state women’s champion, and a Mobile Sports Hall of Fame inductee. These days Bahnsen is doing what needs to be done to keep her program in the forefront of women’s college golf. She hosts one of the spring’s top collegiate golf tournaments and while the program has a very recognized and successful past, she is working hard to add new memories to the history of the program. Bahnsen is married to LSU Senior Associate Athletic Director David “Bo” Bahnsen. They have two children, son, Darren, 21 (a former member of state championship basketball and golf teams at University High in Baton Rouge and Head Manager for the LSU men’s basketball team) and daughter, Devin, 19.

NGCA/LSU Hall of Fame Inductions LSU women’s golf Coach Karen Bahnsen accepted the pinnacle award of her 25-year coaching career at LSU in December 2008 as she was inducted into the National Golf Coaches Association Hall of Fame. “I wish to thank the NGCA and I am honored to join such a great group of former inductees,” Bahnsen said in her remarks. The Mobile, Ala., native was the first recruit of the LSU program back in 1979 and took over as head coach of the team following the 1984-85 season from Buddy Alexander who had served for a couple of years as both the men’s and women’s head coach at LSU. “When it comes to the history of LSU’s 30-years of women’s golf, there is no person who understands it more than Karen Bahnsen,” said LSU Senior Associate Sports Information Director Kent Lowe, who presented Bahnsen for induction at the banquet. “Karen is not only a coach, but a person who understands what every shot means to these collegiate players because she has lived it.” “This is an opportunity to be a role model in life for these girls,” Bahnsen said. “You can do it all. Being a wife-mother and coach requires a balancing act, but I always believe in keeping family first. Once a recruit comes to LSU, the girls become a part of my family. I am competitive -- we all want to win -- but it is all about making a difference in players’ lives. So to me, this award is not about me, it’s about the team. “To all the girls I’ve had the privilege to coach over the past 25 years, hopefully I have been able to touch their lives in some way,” Bahnsen said of her teams. Among those Bahnsen thanked and on hand for the event were her Mom, June, and long-time husband LSU Senior Associate Athletic Director Bo Bahnsen. Bahnsen became the 42nd member of the NGCA Coaches Hall of Fame.
LIDBACK -LSU HALL OF FAME
Jenny Lidback became the first LSU women’s golfer inducted into the LSU Athletic Hall of Fame in April 2010. Lidback played goal at LSU in 1986 after transferring from TCU. Her 1986 season with the Tigers is the single greatest season in the history of golf at LSU as she was named All-American, SEC Player of the Year and National Collegiate Player of the Year. During that remarkable season, she won seven individual tournament titles, more in one season than any other LSU golfer has won in a career. A two-time All-American at TCU before transferring to LSU, she was the 1985 individual Women’s World Amateur Champion for playing for Perur in 1985. A 1986 graduate of LSU, she had a successful career on the LPGA Tour and is the only LSU player to win an LPGA major, capturing the DuMarier Classic in 1995. She earned over $1.7 million on the LPGA Tour and graduated from LSU in1986 with a degree in broadcast journalism.

ALEXIS RATHER
ASSISTANT COACH • 1ST SEASON
Former LSU golfer Alexis Rather returns back to Baton Rouge and LSU as assistant coach after two years serving in the same position at the University of Mississippi. The native of Tupelo, Miss., was a four-year letter winner at LSU, appeared in two NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championships and was a four-time National Golf Coaches Association scholarathlete. Rather, a two-time First-Team AllLouisiana golfer, had three top 10 finishes in her 2008 senior season. She also that year chipped in for the only birdie in sudden death in a playoff for the final qualifying spot at the NCAA East Regional. The chip-in propelled LSU to the 2008 Championships where LSU finished in 15th place.
Over the course of her career, Rather played in all but three tournaments during her four years. She posted three top 10s and six top 20 performances and her 128 career rounds played is tied for fourth most rounds played by an LSU women’s golfer. She averaged 76.84 strokes through her four-year career. She was also a four-time member of the Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll. At Ole Miss, she helped guide the Rebels back to postseason play and win a tournament for the first time since 2004 as the women’s golf team earned the Chancellor’s Cup for the women’s varsity team at Ole Miss with the highest grade point average.
Rather was named LSU’s recipient on the SEC Community Service Team and was heavily involved her entire LSU career with CHAMPS service projects throughout the community. She graduated from LSU in July 2007 with a degree with honors in Communications and her master’s in Sports Management from LSU in 2008. “We are very excited to have Alexis back at LSU,” said LSU women’s golf head coach Karen Bahnsen. “I think she will be a great addition to our LSU family. As a former player, she brought a lot to our team and in the assistant coach position I believe she will play a big role in our continued success. I really look forward to working with her and I believe we will make a great team.”

LADY TIGERS AT THE
ZURICH CLASSIC One of the yearly traditions for members of the LSU women’s golf team has been to caddy and walk with PGA players on pro-am day at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans at the TPC of Louisiana in Avondale. The tournament has made the Lady Tigers a part of the event in a big way, caddying and walking with some of the game’s top stars, including the defending champion each year. This past year that group included Jerry Kelly, former champ and LSU All-American David Toms, David Crane and Sergio Garcia. LSU players also were with Archie and Eli Manning and members of the sponsoring Zurich Financial Services group. In past years, LSU players have caddied for such stars as Vijay Singh and Justin Rose and comedy legend Bill Murray the year he made an appearance in the pro-am. The pros sometimes even let the Lady Tigers get into the act and Kelly and his group this year let caddy Jacqueline Hedwall drive the ball off the 16th tee and she responded with a down the middle effort. “The girls have a great time each year out there,” said LSU Coach Karen Bahnsen. “We all do. The girls are able to visit with the pros and they usually take the time to answer their questions and visit with them. It’s a great day for us to be out there and while it’s lots of fun, it is also a learning experience for the girls at the same time.”

2009-10 SEASON REVIEW The LSU golf season had highlights in the beginning and the end, that marked memorable bookends of the 2009-10 women’s golf season, but for most of the team the disappointment of not making the NCAA Championship by one stroke will be the incentive needed to spur the team on toward 2010-11. NGCA National Match Play In the opening event of the season, against a stellar field of teams the Lady Tigers had the pressure from the beginning of qualifying in the top eight teams to advance to the championship match play tree the next day. But LSU made it through easily, finishing in a tie for third with a 14-over par total for 36 holes of 590. Jacqueline Hedwall finished in a tie for third at even par 144 and Mary Michael Maggio in her debut tied for eighth at 1-over 145. The Southeastern Conference did very well in the qualifying and LSU would face league foe Georgia in the opening five-play match play format. But it was an easy 4-1 win for the Lady Tigers as Megan McChrystal, Maggio, Amalie Valle and Tessa Teachman all won. That put LSU in the semifinals with top-seed Florida. Again, it was LSU strong at the end, winning deciding holes late in three matches to get the 3-2 decision as Hedwall won
2-1 and McChrystal and Maggio both won 1 up in matches that went to the 18th hole. The Lady Tigers would meet SEC-rival Auburn in the championship match and the Lady Tigers captured the prestigious match play title with 3.5 points. LSU turned two matches in the final holes that proved to be the difference as McChrystal tied her match and Maggio went 1 up in hers. LSU won the fourth match with Valle, 1 up to go with an impressive 6 and 5 win by Teachman to cap the match. McChrystal Adds Another Title McChrystal, the junior from Stuart, Fla., added her third title of her LSU career by making a 20-foot putt for birdie on the final hole to beat a large field in the Tiger-Wave Golf Classic at English Turn and Country Club. McChrystal posted a three-under 69 on the day to go with rounds of 72-72 to finish at 3-under 213. McChrystal is now tied for third with former LSU All-Americans Ashley Winn and Meredith Duncan at three collegiate wins and only two golfers have won more during their LSU career. McChrystal would complete the year with 13 career top 10 finishes, ninth best in the history of the program.
Post-Season Play The Tigers posted the lowest aggregate score the team has ever shot in the SEC Tournament, a 14-over 886, and finished in the upper division (sixth) for the third consecutive season. The heartbreak of the LSU season came in the NCAA West Regional as LSU faltered in the final holes to miss qualifying for a third straight NCAA Championship appearance by one stroke. But McChrystal was able to keep her goal alive of top 10 finishes in all three post-season events, advancing to the D1 Championships as an individual after a fifth-place finish in the regional posting rounds of 71-71-76 for a five-over 218. In the end, McChrystal would set the tournament on fire on the final day with a school, course and NCAA Championships record of 8-under 64 to become the first LSU golfer to play the NCAA Championships under par (72-71-76-64 – 213, 5-under) and finished in a tie for fifth, moving up 18 spots on the final day. McChrystal, who earned first-team All-SEC honors and second-team NGCA All-American honors both for the second straight year, posted a 3-under 33 on the front side and birdied six back-nine holes en route to a second nine score of 31.

The Southeastern Conference has continuted to show its leadership in the intergration of athletic competition and higher education. Since its formation in 1933, the SEC has achieved both stature and stability by designating governing/voting power to the presidents of the member institutions. They have determined the policies of the conference and through the years this involvement has been the principal source of strength in the evolution of the SEC. Intercollegiate athletics encountered many challenges in the 1990s and the SEC provided guidance. In 1993, the member institutions adopted The Principles of Gender Equity. Committed to increasing the quantity and quality of women’s athletic opportunities, each school provides at least two more women’s intercollegiate programs than the number of men’s. SEC schools began athletic competition over 100 years ago as members of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association. The 13 members west and south of the Appalachian Mountains reorganized as the Southeastern Conference at the annual Southern Conference meeting in 1932. Charter members of the new conference were Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, LSU , Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Sewanee, Tennessee, Tulane and Vanderbilt. In the 1979-80 academic year, SEC championships for women were recognized in basketball, tennis and volleyball. The following year golf, gymnastics, swimming and track and field were added. The administration of women’s athletics officially came under the auspices of the conference office in 1984. The SEC currently regulates nine men’s sports and 11 women’s sports. The women’s sports are volleyball, golf, gymnastics, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, track (cross country, indoor, outdoor) and volleyball.

HISTORY
LSU
2011 NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP There was history in the making at the 2010 NCAA D1 Women’s Golf Championship as then junior Megan McChrystal had a round for the ages. Entering the final round of the championships, McChrystal’s goal of top 10s in all three post-season events looked to be in jeopardy. But by the time she made birdie on the 72nd hole, she had posted a number that set the school, course and event record for an NCAA D1 Women’s Championship. The Stuart, Fla., native had nine birdies and just one bogey on her card to shoot an eight-under par round of 64 to finish in a tie for fifth place in the championships. In the process she snapped the school mark of 7-under 65 shot by Katy Harris in the second round of the 2001 SEC Championships. It was just the third round in the 30-plus years of LSU women’s golf that was better than 68. McChrystal became the first LSU golfer to complete the 72-hole championship under par (72-71-76-74, 5-under 213). McChrystal birdied three holes on her first nine holes to turn in 3-under 33. “After I was 1-under for the first three holes, I felt like it was time to get some revenge on some of these holes,” McChrystal said at the time. “I felt good and just went for the flag. I didn’t really know what I was shooting. I remember making a long putt on No. 7. I was just playing golf and making putts.” On the final nine holes, McChrystal birdied five of the first six holes to stand at 8-under through 15 holes. A bogey on 17 dropped her back to 7-under, but she made a 12-foot birdie on the final hole to record the 64.

Unfortunately, McChrystal was there as an individual player representing LSU as the Lady Tigers failed in their chance to make it to the D1 Championships. Playing in the NCAA West Regionals in Stanford, Calif. LSU fell just one shot short of making the top eight teams that advanced to the championship. But because McChrystal was the top player not on the eight advancing teams so she moved thorugh to the Championship. McChrystal became the fifth LSU player with a top 10 finish in the NCAA D1 Championships.
2011 NCAA Championship/LSU Championship History The regional rounds for the 2011 Championships will again be conducted over three different golf courses -East: Stetson Univeristy at the LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla.; Central: Notre Dame at the Warren Golf Course in Notre Dame, Ind.; West: Washington at the Washington National Golf Club in Seattle, Wash. The regionals are from May 5-7. The eight lowest scoring teams, as well as the two lowest individuals not on those eight qualifying teams will advance to the NCAA Division I Women’s Championships at The Traditions Golf Club in College Station, Texas, May 17-20. Texas A&M serves as the host school for the 2011 event. LSU made its first of 10 NCAA championship appearances in the first NCAA event in 1982 in Palo Alto, Calif., when LSU finished 16th. of the Year Jenny Lidback, helped the Tigers to a ninth-place finish. Lidback finished tied for 17th. The Lady Tigers made their longest championship run starting in 1986, when the Three Amigas (Ashley Winn, Laura Moore and Michelle Louviere) took the Lady Tigers to top 10-finishes in 1996 (8th) and 1998 (5th). Louviere finished tied for 19th in 1986 and Ashley Winn tied for 15th. The Tigers posted 10th-place finishes in 1999 and 2000 and a 12th place finish in 2001 on teams led by Katy Harris and Meredith Duncan. Duncan played the last 54 holes in 2-under par after opening with a 10-over 82 to finish in a tie for seventh place in 2000 and Harris shot a 1-under 287 to finish in a tie for third in LSU’s appearance in 2001. Harris and Kristi Coats, who competed as an individual competitor in 1991, have the best finishes in the championships for LSU, both finishing third in the individual competition. The only

other top-10 finish for an individual golfer prior to McChrystal’s record-setting finish came in 2005 when Brooke Shelton posted a tie for eighth-place finish. Harris and Duncan are the two players who went to the championships all four years of their careers. Harris made it on four teams from 1998 to 2001, while Duncan qualified on three teams and once individually from 1999-2002. McChrystal has now gone all three years of her career at LSU, twice on teams and this past year as an individual and could join Harris and Duncan with four appearances if things go right this season. Since 1993, to get to the NCAA Division I Championships, teams and individuals must go through the NCAA Regional Tournaments. LSU has hosted the regional on three occasions (1993, 2002, 2007). LSU has advanced to the regional round of NCAA post-season play since that first tournament in 1993 every year but 1994 and 2003.

UNIVERSITY CLUB
For the past decade, the LSU men’s and women’s golf teams have called University Club home. After undergoing extensive renovations over the past year, the home of LSU’s nationally-ranked programs features a newly-designed par-72 layout that will serve as an impressive showpiece for generations to come. The course at the University Club was re-designed under the guidance of LSU legend and PGA Tour pro David Toms and renowned golf course architect Jim Lipe, who designed the original University Club in 1998. The course is carved into nearly 300 acres of land just seven miles south of the LSU campus on Nicholson Drive.

COACHES
It comes as no surprise that the University Club has already been selected as an NCAA Men’s Golf Regional host site for the 2013 season, marking the first time in the illustrious history of the LSU men’s golf program that the Tigers will serve as hosts to an NCAA postseason tournament on its home course. The challenging 18-hole, par-72 course at University Club will play to 7,700 yards from its championship tees and feature wide fairways bordered by pine hammocks and native grasses, in addition to 2,000 feet of beautiful bulkhead. Four additional sets of tees are also available for players of all ages and skill levels. In addition, the lake areas have been increased by 110,000 cubic yards in total and more than 500 trees have been added throughout the course to provide a challenging test of golf for anyone playing the University Club. Not only that, but the course now has one of the most impressive finishing holes in golf as the 18th hole on the back nine features a new championship “Tiger” tee with a beautiful six-foot high wood bulkhead. The lake was expanded near the green, where an additional 180 feet of bulkhead was also added. The course was built on land donated to the Tiger Athletic Foundation and subsequently leased to The University Club. The original vision that drove University Club’s development was having a premier course that would provide a place for TAF members to play, as well as a home for the men’s and women’s golf teams at LSU. The course opened for members on Oct. 22, 1998. The swimming and tennis facility adjacent to the course opened in the summer of 2000. The surrounding housing development continues to grow, adding to the beauty of the area surrounding the golf course. The Tiger Athletic Foundation is a private, non-profit corporation that serves as the fund-raising and development arm of the LSU athletics department. Each year, the TAF underwrites scholarship and academics awards, as well as capital development projects for LSU athletics.

U-Club New Look Hole-By-Hole
In its original state, the U-Club played at just over 7,200 yards from its Tiger Tees and just over 6,000 yards for the early LSU Women’s Golf Classics. Now the course measures out at a hefty 7,700 yards from the Tiger Tees and an impressive 6,602 yards from member tees. Here are some of the design changes and characteristics of the new course and pictures of the holes (tees are listed in the following order: Tiger-ScratchMember-Senior-Ladies/Jrs.)

No. 1 – Par 4 – 456-402-385-349-274 A new championship tee lengthens the hole some 50 yards. The former waste bunker on the left side has been replaced by an area of pine hammock and several new trees have been planted in the right rough. On the approach shot, players will have to watch for a new grass hollow that replaced greenside bunkers. No. 2 – Par 4 – 447-435-382-324-312 A good hole that didn’t need a lot of change. Two new bunkers will tempt those looking to carry a drive and the left side of the green has been raised to create a top shelf pin placement. No. 3 – Par 5 – 673-632-578-542-496 Can you say long? The No.1 handicap hole on the course has had 53 yards added to its Tiger distance and features native grass areas down both sides of a fairway that was much easier to hit. The water has also been expanded off the tee, replacing the old fairway bunker. The green has been elevated to make a more demanding approach.

No. 4 – Par 4 – 375-341-315-288-231 This was a short par 4 that some long hitters could put the ball at the edge of the green with an accurate drive. That task will be a little tougher as the left side water now extends into the fairway. The green has also been extended back for an addition hole location. No. 5 – Par 3 – 189-172-155-137-96 This picturesque par 3 loses the wide bail-out area on the right as you look from the tee. The lake now extends closer to the green making accuracy everything from the tee box. No. 6 – Par 5 – 573-554-522-478-450 This hole takes on a whole new identity with a new lake down the entire length of the hole. A creek also crosses the fairway, directly in the landing zone of most hitters. The creek extends into a pond at the green making the approach shot more demanding.

No. 7 – Par 4 – 471-457-431-401-349 The beginning of a tough stretch of three holes to close the front nine. Native grasses have replaced the wetlands in front of the tee box. A fairway bunker has been added and a grass hollow is now left of the green. No. 8 – Par 3 – 222-188-166-130-107 The long par-3 eighth has undergone a complete renovation. The tee box has been reshaped and elevated some seven feet. The water on the hole has been expanded to the front left of the green. The putting surface has also been reshaped and three new bunkers added. No. 9 – par 4 – 486-467-443-394-345 The second longest par 4 on the course has had several trees planted down the right side. Waste bunkers have been replaced by pine hammock areas and native grass comes into play on the left side. The result is a much tighter landing area to try to place a drive.

No. 10 – Par 4 – 484-444-402-354-327 Golfers will notice the trees down the left side that give the hole new definition. The approach shot will have to avoid pine hammocks short and right of the green. No. 11 – Par 5 – 567-557-516-484-429 This long par 5 has seen native dunes replace fairway bunkers on the left side. A new fairway bunker in the middle of the fairway that is 110 yards out from the green will cause approach problems. The water down the right has been expended close to the newly-elevated green, placing a premium on getting the ball to the hole. No. 12 – Par 4 – 422-410-368-350-307 Several trees will cause problem with errant drives on both sides of the hole. A new sand bunker has replaced a grass bunker in front of the green. An accurate tee shot is a must.

No. 13 – Par 3 – 209-179-151-141-119 This is one of the best holes on the course so few changes were needed. Some trees have been added and the green expanded to add hole locations. A straightforward tee shot is necessary with severe bunkers on the left side of the green. No. 14 – Par 4 – 460-448-404-351-317 One of the more intimidating holes on the course with an uncompromising dogleg left leaving little room for error off the tee. Water has been extended into the fairway on the left side and pine hammocks down the right. The green has been expanded to the back and to the right. No. 15 – Par 4 – 365-347-327-287-244 This hole probably has some of the biggest changes on the golf course. There is a new elevated tee box and the right side of the hole features mounding with native grasses. The fairway has been reshaped and bunkers added on the left. The hole has the potential to be played as a drivable par 4.

No. 16 – Par 3 – 253-215-167-144-117 This hole now could play 250 yards over water from the Tiger tee as opposed to the old distance of 188 yards. The existing green has been expanded to the right to allow more hole locations. The bunkers have been taken out and water has been added to the right of the green. No. 17 – Par 5 – 551-528-501-452-443 The hole now has several trees down the right side of the entire hole. The water on the left expands toward the fairway approaching the hole. An added lake at the green makes an accurate approach imperative. Long hitters can reach the green in two. No. 18 – Par 4 – 497-458-389-372-340 The signature hole is one of the best finishing holes in the state. Native grasses have been added both right and left on this dogleg left hole. The lake which has always been in play off the tee now has been expanded near the green, replacing the left greenside bunker. There is 180 feet of bulkhead bordering the left side of the green.

2011 GOLF CLASSIC THE HISTORY This year’s LSU Golf Classic will mark the 30th consecutive spring that the LSU women’s golf team has hosted a tournament that has grown to be one of the most prestigious events of the women’s golf schedule. The Classic moved to the LSU University Club in 2000 and after a year in New Orleans, the tournament returns to the University Club, But the tournament roots go back to the local Fairwood Country Club and its unique membership that not only hosted and ran the tournament, but served as uncles and aunts for many of the teams that came each year. Club members hosted teams at their houses every year, allowing teams to save money in the days when women’s college golf wasn’t funded as it is today. Dinners were provided by the club along with member entertainment and some of the nation’s top golf teams and players came to participate. Jenny Lidback, who would go on to win a major championship on the LPGA tour, lost the tournament title in a playoff while at TCU and in 1986 would win the title as an LSU Lady Tiger. Arizona’s Marisa Baena had her coming out party as a freshman dominating the competition. In the final LSU-Fairwood event in 1999, Duke put on the course a lineup that would become one of the most dominating in the nation. Dan Brooks brought his Duke team back to Baton Rouge to win the 2007 renewal on the way to winning the East Regional at the U-Club, leading to a third straight NCAA Championship. LSU’s annual golf tournament has not only proven to be an important event on the women’s collegiate circuit, but it has proven to be a community event as seen by the hundreds of volunteers who take part each year. It’s to those volunteers that the LSU golf program salutes for their tireless efforts that make the LSU event the success it is. Also thanks to the University Club for being a special home for LSU Golf and to the TAF for their work to continue to make the U-Club a strong test of golf.

GOLF CLASSIC BACK AT “NEW” U-CLUB The rite of spring known as the LSU Golf Classic returns to the newlyredesigned University Club, March 11-13, 2011. The Lady Tigers last year co-hosted the tournament with Tulane at the English Turn Golf and Country Club. This will mark the 30th year the Lady Tigers have hosted a tournament, the 29th in Baton Rouge. This year’s field will get a first-hand look at the “new” University Club which has been redeveloped to offer a true test of golf and add to the luster of being the home site for the LSU golf teams. With the exception of 2010, LSU has played the tournament at the U-Club every year since 2000 as well as hosting two NCAA regionals and an SEC Championship in that time. This year’s LSU Golf Classic has drawn a stellar field of 21 teams as the Lady Tigers will host: Alabama, Arkansas, Charleston, Duke, Furman, Kentucky, Louisiana-Monroe, Louisville, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, North Carolina, North Carolina State, North Carolina-Wilmington, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, TCU, Tulane, Virginia, Wake Forest,

Dr. John V. Lombardi President, Louisiana State University System
Dr. John V. Lombardi is the fifth individual to serve as the President of the Louisiana State University System. As its Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Lombardi oversees 11 institutions, including five academic campuses, as well as 10 public hospitals located throughout the state. He is also a Professor of History at Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College. Dr. Lombardi was born in Los Angeles, Calif., and attended Pomona College, where he earned his bachelor’s degree. He received his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in history from Columbia University. He joined the faculty in the Department of History at Indiana University, where he later served as Dean of International Programs and Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. In 1987, he became Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at the Johns Hopkins University. From 1990-99, Dr. Lombardi was President of the University of Florida. Prior to his appointment as President of the LSU System, he served as Chancellor of the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He is a Latin American historian, with a special interest in Venezuela. Dr. Lombardi is also one of the country’s foremost authorities in higher education, serving as Co-Editor of The Top American Research Universities. He is the author of numerous professional publications, and along with his wife, Cathryn, co-authored a teaching atlas on Latin American History. He has taught courses in history, intercollegiate sports, and university management.

Dr. Michael V. Martin Chancellor, LSU
Dr. Michael V. Martin assumed the chancellorship of Louisiana State University and A&M College on August 1, 2008. Prior to his appointment as LSU’s eighth chancellor, Dr. Martin established a distinguished career in higher education, serving most recently as president of New Mexico State University. Before arriving at NMSU in 2004, Dr. Martin served for six years as vice president for agriculture and natural resources at the University of Florida, leading the university’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. He was elevated to senior vice president of the University of Florida shortly before being selected as NMSU’s president. Previously, he was vice president for agricultural policy and the dean of the College of Agricultural, Food and Environmental Sciences at the University of Minnesota. He began his academic career at Oregon State University as a faculty member in the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics. An academic leader dedicated to the land-grant mission, Dr. Martin is recognized as a strong voice for higher education. In 2007, he received the Justin Smith Morrill Memorial Award, named after the author of the bill creating land-grant universities, which honors outstanding service on behalf of the land-grant mission. Only six individuals have been designated to receive this award since it was first given in 1980. For his leadership in improving the quality of life for New Mexico citizens and future generations, he was awarded the 2008 Distinguished Leadership Award by Leadership New Mexico. Other recent awards include his recognition as a powerbroker by The New Mexico Business Weekly in 2006, being named Outstanding Alumnus of Minnesota State University Mankato in 2006, and receiving the NMSU Social Justice Award in 2005. Dr. Martin is involved in a wide array of professional and community organizations and activities. An active scholar, Dr. Martin has authored numerous book chapters and articles for academic journals, trade publications, and the popular press and recently published pieces for The Chronicle of Higher Education and University Business. Some of his philosophy is summed up in the following quote: “It is the tradition of land-grant universities to be non-traditional,” written as part of a 2001 article titled “The Land-Grant University in the 21st Century,” published in the Journal of Agricultural and Applied Economics. He traced the history of the land-grant movement from the mid-1800s and concluded that “the fundamental land-grant principles of accessibility, practical as well as classical education, research and discovery in the public interest, and connectedness to all the people remain powerful and profound.” A native of Crosby, Minn., Dr. Martin earned a bachelor’s degree in business and economics and a master’s degree in economics at Mankato State College (Minnesota State University) in Minnesota. VICE CHANCELLOR AND DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS
LSU
Joe Alleva
LSU Vice-Chancellor/Director of Athletics
Joe Alleva enters his third year as LSU’s Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics after being hired to lead one of the nation’s most powerful athletic programs on April 4, 2008. Alleva joined LSU after 10 years of outstanding leadership as the director of athletics at Duke University. He officially took over at LSU on July 1, 2008. The LSU Board of Supervisors approved a promotion in August 2009 for Alleva, adding vice chancellor to his title and expanding his role to the academic side of the university. It’s the first time at LSU that the director of athletics has also held a vice chancellor position. “I am honored to be named vice chancellor at this outstanding institution and thank Chancellor (Michael) Martin, President (John) Lombardi and the Board of Supervisors for the confidence they have shown in me,” Alleva said. “Athletics is the window through which many people view LSU and it is important that we excel in competition and in the classroom while demonstrating the utmost of integrity. I believe my promotion ties athletics closer to the university and that is a good thing for everyone; we are all on the same team.” Under Alleva’s guidance, LSU has reached new heights in terms of athletic success while continuing to be recognized as one of the top enterprises in college athletics. A veteran leader in college athletics, Alleva is dedicated to athletic and academic excellence. He is committed to providing the opportunities and the resources necessary for student-athletes to excel in competition, in the classroom and in the community. Alleva, 57, is well-respected for sustaining high standards of excellence and integrity in athletic programs, hiring the finest coaches in the country and the high level of success achieved by student-athletes. One of Alleva’s big initiatives on the LSU campus is the launching of a strategic plan for the continued success and future improvement of LSU Athletics. LSU Athletics has produced a new booklet called “LSU: Thru and True” designed to introduce a strategic plan for operating a top tier athletics program. The strategic plan booklet is titled “LSU: Thru and True” because, in the words of Alleva, “Our core values run deep and our commitment to excellence is relentless. At LSU, college athletics is an avenue for providing opportunities, for achieving goals, for generating enthusiasm and for nurturing passion.” The subtitle of the booklet is “Excellence in Competition, Distinction in the Classroom, and Contribution to the Community.” The strategic plan addresses various topics including quality of life for student-athletes; academic and athletic excellence; compliance and ethics; financial responsibility; diversity, inclusion and equity; tradition and history, and service and communication. The plan also includes a vision for the future of LSU athletics facilities, highlighted by plans to improve North Stadium Drive between Tiger Stadium and the Pete Maravich Assembly Center. Alleva is an innovator with bold ideas that benefit not only LSU but all of Greater Baton Rouge. Alleva was heavily involved in the planning of the inaugural Bayou Country Superfest, a two-day country music concert and festival held in Tiger Stadium last spring. The event attracted nearly 100,000 visitors to the LSU campus and made a tremendous economic impact upon the local community. Seventeen of LSU’s 20 sports programs participated in post-season competition in 2009-10, including the Tiger football squad that played in a bowl game for the 10th-straight season. Six LSU teams posted Top 10 national finishes last season, and 12 were ranked among the Top

25. LSU finished in the Top 20 of the Learfield Director’s Cup rankings, which measure overall athletic success for institutions across the country. Under Alleva’s direction in 2008-09, all 20 LSU sports competed in NCAA post-season play for the first time in school history, and it culminated with the baseball team winning the national championship. In addition, six teams finished in the top 10 nationally. LSU was the only school in the Southeastern Conference to participate in a bowl game and the men’s and women’s NCAA basketball tournaments during 2008-09. Furthermore, LSU student-athletes volunteered a total of 2,360 hours for community service projects. LSU earned a ninth-place ranking in the 2008-09 Learfield Director’s Cup, as the Tigers were second only to Florida among SEC institutions. LSU accumulated points in 18 of a possible 20 categories in the standings, also a first for the school. Upon being hired at LSU, Alleva immediately made an impact by hiring Trent Johnson to lead the men’s basketball program. Johnson, the 2009 SEC Coach of the Year, wasted little time in turning the Tigers into a winner as LSU claimed the 2009 SEC regular season title and reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament. LSU also had top 10 national finishes in 2008-09 in gymnastics, men’s and women’s indoor track and field and men’s and women’s outdoor track and field. Thirteen of LSU’s 20 sports finished the year ranked among the top 25 in the nation. The Tiger football team capped their 2008 season with a 38-3 win over 14th-ranked Georgia Tech in the Chick-fil-A Bowl. During the offseason, Alleva helped secure the funding necessary for the addition of a state-of-the-art artificial turf practice field, which complements the surface the Tigers have in their indoor practice facility. The addition of the outdoor artificial turf field gives the LSU football program one of the nation’s finest all-around facilities. Not only did LSU teams set records but so did the fans, as over 1.5 million fans filled venues on the LSU campus in 2008-09. LSU set the school record for overall attendance in the sports of football, baseball and softball. Alleva oversaw in the spring of 2009 the grand opening of two of the premier baseball and softball facilities in college athletics, Alex Box Stadium and Tiger Park. In addition, LSU opened a new gift center for its fans – the LSU SportShop. The LSU SportShop, a spectacular, freestanding facility that features the latest in LSU apparel and merchandise, is located adjacent to Mike’s Habitat. Under Alleva’s guidance, LSU has one of the most lucrative apparel and shoe contracts with Nike while also having one of the nation’s most attractive multi-media rights contracts with CBS Collegiate Sports Properties. LSU athletic budget is now approaching $85 million, which allows the university to compete at the highest level in the nation. Alleva has a long-term vision for continued improvements to LSU’s athletic facilities in order to insure that the Tigers are among the best in the country well into the 21st Century. One of his top priorities is the enhancement of Tiger Stadium and making Tiger Stadium and the North Stadium Drive corridor a showplace for the university. Alleva’s innovative plan is to make a plaza area between

the Maravich Assembly Center and Tiger Stadium that would recognize LSU’s national championship teams and distinguished alumni. This special area, along with Mike’s Habitat, and the LSU SportShop, would become the focal point for visitors to campus. LSU opened in the spring of 2010 a basketball practice facility that houses both the men’s and women’s basketball teams. The new basketball practice facility features two full length courts as well as locker rooms and other amenities for both squads. Alleva is also overseeing a major renovation to the golf course at the University Club that will be completed in September 2010, and he is developing plans for a new gymnastics practice facility, indoor tennis center and improved soccer facility. LSU’s world-renowned track and field program will receive a state-of the-art running surface this year when a new track is installed in Bernie Moore Stadium. “Joe Alleva brings a wealth of experience and accomplishment to LSU,” LSU President John Lombardi said of hiring Alleva. “I’m confident we’ve found a new leader for LSU athletics who exemplifies the vision and integrity needed to lead our sports programs to new heights, a champion of student athletes who believes in the highest standards of competition both on the field and in the classroom.” Alleva’s impressive tenure as director of athletics at Duke propelled the university into the ranks of America’s top all-around collegiate programs. Among his outstanding list of accomplishments includes the greatest 10-year period in Duke athletics, winning more ACC and NCAA championships than in any other decade in school history. Also, his fundraising reached extensive heights providing new facilities or renovations for all 26 sports at Duke, which enhanced the experience for every studentathlete. Alleva is active on the national collegiate athletics scene, having served on the Football Bowl Certification Committee. He sat on several Atlantic Coast Conference committees and served on the NCAA Division I Championships/Competition Cabinet. Alleva majored in Finance at Lehigh University and received his bachelor’s degree in 1975. While at Lehigh, Alleva was the quarterback of the football team and team captain in 1974. Alleva also played on the Lehigh baseball team. He served as a graduate assistant football coach and earned an MBA in 1976. Alleva began his 32-year career at Duke University in 1976. He spent 28 years in the athletic administration prior to becoming director of athletics in 1998. Alleva played a key role in Durham’s community sports scene. He started Little League Baseball in Durham over 20 years ago, and also began the American Legion baseball program Alleva is a member of the North Carolina American Legion Hall of Fame, Suffern High School Hall of Fame and the Rockland County Hall of Fame. He currently serves on the Louisiana State Board of the Special Olympics. Alleva and his wife, Annie, have three children, J.D., Jeff and Jenny.
