People Written by Chaekbo, Illustrated by Shin Soo-jin
Children’s Illustrated Learning Encyclopedias is a series for children 3 to 7 years old, and each volume/book gives children information and knowledge about the world through illustrations.
Illustrator Shin Soo-jin: I’m eternally grateful for having the opportunity to illustrate children’s books. I thought a lot about how I could illustrate the topic of human beings. I hope that as kids read this book, they can reflect on their own emotions and actions. Books I have illustrated include Clack, Clack, Build a House, A Treasure from the Field, Rock (from the Children’s Illustrated Learning Encyclopedias series), and Shape.
Chaekbo is a collaborative group of writers who have worked on creating, translating, or writing children’s books. Their goal was to come up with a way to introduce the world to children so that it would be best understood by children.

1
When a child is first born, there isn’t anything he or she can do alone. What allows the child to grow is the caring power of love.
I can rest easy knowing that the person who watched over me today will also watch over me tomorrow.
People have a lot of worries.
They worry about the future: whether they’ll have enough to eat tomorrow, or whether next year will be a bad year. That is why they store food and save money.
People become jealous when other people have what they don’t have. Some people try to take other people’s possessions by force, and other people try to get things through their own efforts.
Only people have curiosity. They were curious about why apples fell to the ground, and they were amazed by seeing the stars move every day. People’s curiosity led to the development of science.
2
People like adventure. By trying new things that they hadn’t tried before, people were able to build tall buildings and fly to space.
When your friend moves far away, or when your grandmother or grandfather gets sick, or when your dog is not around anymore, you cry.
People become sad when other people are sad. They try to comfort people who are sad. But just being there is the biggest comfort.
If you were on a deserted island, you’d be lonely, but if there is no one who understands you, that’s lonely also. In that case, it doesn’t matter how many people are around you.
What is important is being able to share how you feel with someone. That could be just one person or many. How many is not important.
If you lie, that means that you know what is right and wrong. When you know what is right, but you choose the wrong action, then you end up lying.
3
You get disappointed when things don’t go the way you want them to. When it rains on the day of your field trip, it’s upsetting, and when your team loses in a competition, you feel discouraged.
When you feel like you’ve been wronged, you feel anger. There are times when it’s better to be patient, and there are times when it’s good to show your anger.
You learn to be patient through the hard times because you want to achieve great things, tell others about them and be recognized. When you achieve something, you will be most proud of yourself.
