[groan] [froth] 5 p. 17 Survival Scientific Facts What is a coelacanth? The coelacanth (‘c’ as in Cecilia) is a fish that was thought to have swum the oceans from the Devonian period of the Paleozoic era. Based on fossil evidence, scientists believed they went extinct during the Cretaceous period about five-million years ago. To the world’s surprise, the fish was discovered alive in its prehistoric form near Madagascar in the early 20th century. It is often referred to as a ‘living fossil’ because of its primitive form.
[It looks silly!] Dongu : Mmm… fish is delicious!
According to research, coelacanths live 150 to 200 meters underwater. The fish is thought to crawl on the ocean floor using its powerful chest and stomach fins. Its body is covered with blue scales.
p.17 The Evolutionary Origins of Amphibians Amphibians are thought to have originated from Ichthyostega, an early amphibian that dates
back to the Upper Devonian period, according to the fossil record. Amphibians are animals that can live underwater and on dry ground. Amphibians breathe with gills when they are young and develop lungs when they are fully grown, although they are not able to ever completely leave the waterside .
