Videotel marked its 40th Anniversary this year with a gathering in Singapore. It was held at the beautiful residence of the British High Commissioner of Singapore, Antony Phillipson. Attendees included prominent maritime heavyweights such as A.P. Moller, Anglo-Eastern, Berge Bulk, MTM, MOL, NYK, OMC, PIL, Wallem, V-Ships as well as government dignateries, to name just a few. Between the surroundings of fine architecture, the many antiques and pictures so carefully scattered around the hallways, the excellent buffet and the invigorating company, all in all it was a splendid evening.

There was electricity about the rooms, a heightened awareness that comes from meeting like-minded people – a maritime family coming together, with good company and conversation. The occasion called for the British Deputy High Commissioner, Judith Slater, to introduce Stephen Bond who gave a presentation taking us through the 40 year history of Videotel. Representing Videotel were also Newton and George Cheng from Hong Kong, Nigel Cleave and Loulla Mouzouris from London and Sundeep Sequeira from Singapore.

In recent months, some of Videotel’s computerbased training courses, multi-media programs and videos, incorporating animation and onboard filming, have been entered in several prestigious media festivals and come up with glittering awards. In April, our Piracy & Armed Robbery (Ed3) won IntermediaGlobe Gold at Hamburg’s World Media Festival, while Houston’s Worldfest awarded a Gold Remi in the category Educational/Instructional – Adult for our Hydrodynamics and Interaction, as well as a Silver Remi for The Mariner’s Role in Collecting Evidence in the same category. In May, Media Communications AssociationInternational (MCA-I) also gave Hydrodynamics and Interaction a Golden Reel, calling it ‘Excellent’ and saying ‘Real-life demonstrations and animations were effective in conveying the message.’ Congratulations to all involved on these projects!

London International Shipping Week – Propelling World Trade is a new and important industry event focusing on London’s vital role in the positive development of global shipping. With a wealth of industry functions planned for the week of 9th -13th September 2013, London International Shipping Week will be the high level networking opportunity of the year for leaders across all sectors of the international shipping industry – regulators, charterers, ship owners, ship managers, lawyers, brokers, bankers, insurers, ship suppliers, ports and shipping service providers and all involved in the shipping world. Up to 50 shipping events are envisaged for the week with a major event being the one-day LISW Conference and Gala Dinner, to be held on Thursday 12th September. The Conference will be held at the spectacular Willis Building in the heart of the City of London, where industry leaders and top government speakers will focus on London at the heart of maritime. Later in the evening, the Gala Dinner will take place at the Grosvenor House Hotel, one of the most luxurious five-star hotels in London. London International Shipping Week is organised by Shipping Innovation – a joint venture between Elaborate Communications and Petrospot – in association with Maritime UK partners The Baltic Exchange, Maritime London, the UK Chamber of Shipping and with TheCityUK, the independent promotional body for UK financial and professional services.

Fatigue and Human Error The Nautical Institute says ‘human error has been implicated in between 60% to 90% of maritime casualties’ and puts a good part of the blame on fatigue. Videotel has two programmes addressing this issue: Fatigue and Stress at Sea and Minimising Fatigue, Maximising Performance. The former is a dramabased programme that looks at some of the underlying causes and suggests

S

ways of minimising them. The latter is presented as a case history of a safety officer who examines the risk elements of all the jobs onboard and suggests recommendations for reducing those risks and improving performance. Both are available from sales@videotel.com.

Videotel launches unique Flag State Administration system at IMO

Videotel launched a unique training software programme, Videotel webFSA, at IMO STW 44, on Wednesday, 1st May 2013. A sophisticated Flag State Administration Training and Record Management system, Videotel webFSA provides Member States with the assistance they need to meet the forthcoming IMO requirement for a global quality management system in the implementation and enforcement of Member State obligations and responsibilities relating to maritime transport. Voluntary IMO Member State Audit Scheme (VIMSAS), which is intended to provide an audited Member State with a comprehensive and objective assessment of how effectively it administers and implements those mandatory IMO instruments which are covered by the scheme, is expected to become mandatory in 2015. Developed in conjunction with the Cayman Islands Shipping Registry and created from Videotel’s highly successful web Fleet Training Administrator (webFTA), Videotel’s webFSA is a highly secure web-based solution built around cloud-based technology providing the detailed reporting needed to access to a surveyor’s records, results and performance instantly via the internet – wherever in the world they are operating. Videotel’s webFSA allows surveyors to maintain and progress their education and training wherever they are in the world, accessing Videotel On Demand (VOD) Online through the Videotel webFSA portal. This new system allows surveyor training programmes to continue uninterrupted, providing full access to the VOD suite of training titles, the individual Member State surveyor training programme schedule and real-time training records, any time a surveyor accesses the system through an internet connection. Fast, flexible, requiring no software to download whatsoever and with an unlimited number of users able to use the system at any one time, there is no compromise on speed of delivery. Videotel’s webFSA will provide Member States with the tools they need to meet quality objectives in areas as diverse and difficult to police as Registration, Survey & Inspection, Casualty Investigation, STCW Compliance, Development of National legislation and Port State Control, to name just a few.

Flag State Approval of the Maritime Security Awareness Course The Swiss Maritime Navigation Office (SMNO), representing the Swiss Flag State Authority, approves Videotel’s Maritime Safety Awareness Course. Lukas Roth, the Flag State Superintendent, said, ‘we were impressed by the informative and easy to understand training.’

BIMCO courses through Videotel

BIMCO e-Learning Diploma Programme (BeDP) enables students to build on their knowledge, acquire increased professional competencies and ongoing personal development at their own time and pace. It is a new and exciting educational tool which will deliver the best possible lectures, covering all aspects of the contemporary maritime industry. BeDP enables managers ashore and senior officers at sea to build on their knowledge to enable them to deal with commercial factors which are the life-blood of our industry. BeDP courses are now available on Videotel’s VOD units. The 5 modules available on VOD cover the following subjects: • Introduction to Shipping • Bills of Lading • Time Charter Parties • Dry Cargo Laytime & Demurrage • Tanker Chartering laytime & Demurrage Module 2 - Bills of Lading, will be unlocked for all Videotel’s Full VOD clients. With the modules available on VOD, maritime personnel can begin studying towards their BIMCO BeDP while onboard. Videotel and Bimco - working together to educate marine professionals and provide operational savings to maritime owners.

Social Media - the Wave of the Future

Despite a slight drop in the number of people using social media sites like Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and YouTube, these all important online portals are still attracting new members, as well as maintaining the flow of information to current members. According to Pew Research Center, over 50% of adults use social media as part of their normal lives - 82% of those 18-29, 77% of 30-49 year olds, 52% of the 50-64, even 32% of those over 65 are tuned in, turned on and definitely not dropped out! Our own social media guru, Alessandro Esposito, is excited by the inroads we are making on the online highway. Followers on Facebook and Twitter have increased substantially, and we’ve had nearly 50,000 views on our YouTube page.

New catalogues launched

VETS (Videotel Electronic Task System)

Videotel has released its latest training catalogue, STCW Maritime Training Catalogue 2013-2014, which is available in 29 languages and comprises more than 800 new and updated titles. It reflects the industry’s growing preference for combined video and computer-based training (CBT) training. Videotel also boasts tutor-led, virtual classroom Academy training courses and webinars, as well as offering bespoke training solutions.

The importance of validating the skills and knowledge of seafarers has never been more important than in today’s marine industry. With operational requirements dependent upon the physical skill of a seafarer, sometimes a computer test is not an adequate assessment of their ability. Therefore, so that operational management have the tools to monitor and management their seafarers training, Videotel are proud to introduce VETS (Videotel Electronic Task System).

In addition, a specialised sector-based catalogue has been produced. Due to growing demand for training in highly specialised industry areas, Videotel has gathered together the programs and courses relating to Ports & Pilots and included those subjects most pertinent to the industries.

Ports & Pilots Training

Catalogue 2013-2014

All training provided by Videotel is compliant with STCW regulations and is available in video, animation, computer-based training, interactive courses with many also having accompanying booklets.

E S

With VETS, owners and ship managers are able to create and modify task books that are targeted to their own organisation’s Safety Management System (SMS) and exported to ships directly from their webFTA account, giving users full control. Assigned onboard trainers are able to assess and record the performance directly onto the VOD Unit after a task has been completed. Full details, including trainers’ comments, are attached to the seafarers’ records and exported to webFTA to be accessible by management online. Task book version control and monitoring feature ensures the correct task book is being used fleet wide. VETS will be available in Summer 2013

Individual Training Planner Building on Videotel’s successful Scheduler feature, Videotel has developed the Individual Training Planner (ITP). In previous versions of the webFTA Scheduler feature, training matrices were designed at the Rank or Vessel level. Now with ITP, management are able to assign training to the individual or custom groups of seafarers, targeting individual weaknesses as well as building on their strengths. The ITP system comprises of an easy-to-use, high-tech drag-and-drop interface, which allows the webFTA user to build a complex training matrix, both quickly and easily. Flexibility has been added to allow the webFTA user to determine the training intervals. As the ITP schedule is attached directly to the seafarer’s training record, it eliminates the need to export the schedule to the vessels. The vessel requests the training record of the seafarer by emailing the webFTA system directly and the system will reply automatically in a matter of minutes with the training record. With ITP, webFTA users are able to build complex training matrices in a matter of minutes, using a secure, robust and easy to use system to effectively arrange the organisations crew training and target specific training needs of the individual. the days of spreadsheets are well and truly over!

Videotel sponsors film night Monday, 22nd April saw Videotel sponsor an evening at the cinema in conjunction with Maritime Piracy Humanitarian Response Programme (MPHRP). This private screening of the Danish film “Kapringen/A Hijacking,” which features television’s Borgen and The Killing cast members, was well received and well attended. Many of our top industry cohorts and clients were able to join us for the drinks reception beforehand. The hard-hitting, gritty story of the taking of the MV Rozen and the subsequent negotiations to release the vessel and her crew had everyone totally engaged right to the end. The harrowing experiences of both crew members, their families and head office personnel are realistically portrayed, from the grim conditions the crew are forced to endure, to the anguish of the families waiting for news, the cruelty of the pirates and the distress of the company CEO as he must negotiate first with the pirates, then his own board as the weeks and months drag on. The film was inspired by a real incident and the claustrophobic feel of every scene is intense. There is no Segal-like action hero, no Hollywood sunset ending, this is not the Black Pearl. This is the authentic and appalling axiom faced by our industry. IMO Secretary General Mr Koji Sekimizu said, ‘After seeing such a film, one normally leaves the theatre relieved to return to reality. This film is too close to home; it is our reality.’

Videotel programs and courses approved by Marshall Islands The Marshall Islands Maritime Administrator has approved the following courses: 1. Marine Environmental Awareness Course 2. Maritime Security Awareness Course 3. ECDIS Training Course 4. GMDSS Training Course 5. Specialized/Advanced Oil Tanker Course They have also have ‘Recognised’ the following course: 1. MLC 2006 Training Course 2. MLC 2006 For Ships’ Masters Training Course

Jed Chapman with friends Rory Quinn and Sox after completing their 35 mile Dawn to Dusk Ten Tor in One Day challenge. Videotel sponsored them in this charity effort in aid of Okehampton’s House of Rachel and its support of a Bulgarian orphanage the two young men are heading to in July 2013. Well done, boys - and special mention to the ‘parents who got them prepared the night before, set their alarms and cooked them breakfast at an ungodly hour...’

NEW PROGRAMS & COURSES Bitesize information on some of our most important new productions. Please see the enclosed sheets for more details.
