tips for first weaning The correct use of a soother

A practi

for the correct Let your baby grow

Soother The pacifier that actively favours the correct development of the mouth Sucking is an inborn instinct that allows children to eat therefore to survive. It also satisfies the psychological need for reassurance and gratification in newborns, and has soothing and calming effects. Sucking is also one of the first and most important moments of neuromuscular learning that begins when the baby is still in the mother’s womb. Suction, in fact, promotes the development of the perioral muscles and determines the thrust of the tongue on the palate, thereby encouraging correct formation. Therefore it is a necessity that cannot be underestimated.

The correcT use of The sooTher some precauTions

2

Do not use with sweet substances since they may cause tooth decay.

Limit the time of daily use until breastfeeding is well under way and in the event of a momentary decrease of the production of milk.

Do not offer the soother whenever the baby cries because crying often indicates a desire to communicate with parents.

It is recommended to reduce the use of the soother in cases of recurring medium otitis and evident dental malocclusions.

The use of dummies should be gradually reduced from 24 months and given up completely by 36 months.

use of a soother . e l i m S up with a great 1.

The Soother:

A Great Ally! Here are three good reasons to use a soother

1 The soother may be used to satisfy the inborn sucking instinct of newborns and calm their crying.

2 According to research published by Pediatrics the use of a soother during sleep time can help reduce the risk of SIDS (cot death): as breathing is facilitated thanks to the position of the tongue, which is positioned further forward in the mouth and sleep is less deep.

F

3 The sucking movement helps the mouth to develop properly. It is in fact known that the dummy, if made with specific requirements and used for 24 months, is not harmful to the mouth, and may even help prevent certain dental malocclusions. On the other hand, thumb sucking can cause damage because the thumb exercises cause more intense pressure on the teeth and the palate, it is more cumbersome and compact and it is also a very difficult habit to get children to stop.

The importance of protein during infancy Why is protein essential? No single nutrient is more essential to growth than protein. Protein basically builds body tissue, such as muscles as well as nails and hair. Protein is made up of amino acids – which some are made in our bodies and some we get from food. Proteins are the building block of life, but careful not to feed our little ones more than they actually need to.

When to start and how? Which are the best sources of Protein? Po ul tr y  Meat  Fi sh  Eg gs  Da ir y Produc ts  Ce re al  Grai ns  14

Once your baby has been introduced to a good variety of fruits and vegetables, it’s important to introduce foods containing protein. Chicken is an ideal first meat. An excellent source of protein and rich in B vitamins, chicken is popular with babies because of its mild taste. It also blends well with vegetables.

Apart from chicken, it is also suggested to introduce white meat first like – turkey, veal, rabbit, ham and veal. Gradually introduce red meat like beef, lamb and pork. Fish remains one of the healthiest foods that you can eat so it is important to try to encourage your baby to enjoy the taste of fish. You can try salmon or sea bream for starters.

The importance

of fluids Now that the warm season will soon arrive, how often should my baby drink and what would be the best choice?

Your child’s body needs fluids for many different reasons to help regulate body temperature, to carry nutrients and oxygen to cells and remove wastes, to lubricate joints, and to protect organs and tissues. Children need 8-12 cups of water everyday. You may think that sounds like a lot. However, keep in mind that other beverages like milk and fruit juice, as well as the water in the foods we eat, all count toward the daily water

16

total. Water is often the best solution for quenching your child’s thirst. Water is a vital nutrient that is readily available and inexpensive. In addition, milk and fruit juices make good beverage options. Not only do they provide water, but also milk is rich in nutrients including bone building calcium, and fruit juice provides many of the nutrients that are found in fruit themselves (such as vitamins, minerals).

Another healthy beverage your child should drink is fruit nectar. Children love its naturally sweet taste, and there’s a wide variety of flavours to choose from, such as Plasmon Pear, Apricot, Peach and Apple Nectars. Fruit juice offers many of the same nutrients as its fruit counterpart (with the exception of fiber) and counts as a serving from the Fruit Group in the Food Guide Pyramid.

G r o a t n n de! e v i D Nutritional characteristics • They are designed for older children • They contain a mix of hard wheat and soft wheat – this makes the transition from small pasta to big pasta much easier • They contain calcium, iron an d vitamins – which are important for balanced growth

The Mediterranean Diet is based on pasta and pulses and is considered by most nutritionists as being among the healthiest. Now even your baby can enjoy the benefits of such a diet but in a smaller and more digestible form. Pasta is enriched with calcium and vitamins of the B group. Plasmon presents the Divento Grande which complements the Plasmon pasta range. These are suitable for babies who got used to chew chunky food.

The Divento Grande pasta comes in two variations – the Grande Divento Pennette and the Grande Divento Fusillini.

TEAMWORK & COOPERATION As parents, you need to agree on how you both want to raise your toddler. You are now a team and as team players, it is best to follow the same discipline styles. Our aim is to encourage our children to behave properly, so we need to encourage cooperation. How? Our toddlers are more likely to do as we, parents say if we ask them in a spirit of cooperation. For example; ‘Would you give mummy the book, please?’ is much more likely to get the desired response rather than ‘Get the book’

E

EYE LEVEL – MuMMY AND DADDY IN CONTROL Body language is another trick. When asking our toddlers to do something, we need to walk the walk and talk the talk. In other words, you need to keep in mind that you are your child’s authority figure. So, talk at eye level and let your children know that you are in control.

AVOID uNNECEssARY BATTLEs BY sETTING LIMITs What do we mean by avoiding unnecessary battles? Okay... picture this! Your toddler is insisting on wearing his/her boots to Grandma’s house and it’s not even raining. Do you; • Pull off the boots despite all the protests and put on the cute pumps or running shoes that go well with his/her outfit? Or • Take a deep sigh and accept his/her eccentric choice of footwear? If you answered ‘A’ you’re likely to have fight on your hands, while ‘B’ might not have been your first option, but it’s not the end of the world. Save the fights for when it matters, for example, when they won’t wear a jacket and it’s very cold outside. On the other hand we need to find the balance between freedom and constraint. Therefore mummy and daddy need to set limits. For instance, while you’ll allow your toddler to run ahead of you at San Anton Gardens or the national park at Ta’ Qali, it’s not an option on a busy street. They must hold mummy or daddy’s hand.

C

CREATE A ROuTINE BuT GIVE ChOICEs Our children need structure and a daily routine. Knowing what’s expected of them, will make them secure. Having a set routine ensures your toddler’s eating and sleeping follows a pattern, and this helps prevent a cranky child. But if it’s lunch time and your little one wants to have a say in what s/he will eat, do not panic or get angry! Here’s another top trick! Give your child two options of food – both of which you’re happy with, like pizza or pasta. Why? This would make our toddlers feel important as ‘decision-makers’ without you backing yourself into a corner.

h

huNGER & sLEEP ... uNDERsTANDING TRIGGERs It’s also important to understand what triggers tantrums and bad behaviour. Hunger and sleep may be two common factors. A hungry toddler is a grumpy one too and may be also more prone to mood swings. What’s the solution? Keep mealtimes regular and have a stash of healthy snacks to hand. Tiredness also makes toddlers irritable. Most 2 year olds need 13 hours’ sleep a day – an hour and a half of which should be after lunch. Some toddlers need more sleep than others, but try to make sure yours get enough sleep. If parents understand and know the situations that trigger tantrums, they will be able to lessen their impact.

As PARENTs we also know that our little ones are the joy of our life. Toddlers are enthusiastic and grab life with both hands. Their amazing spirit and determination is something to be enjoyed. Okay...sometimes the flip side of this can be challenging, but it’s worth remembering that more than anything, your child just wants to please you.

It’s also import ant to understa nd what triggers t antrums and ba d behaviour. Hunger and slee p may be two co mmon factors. A hungry toddle r is a grumpy on e too and may be also more pro ne to mood swin gs 19

10 Tips for

first weaning

24

SIT yOuR BABy In A HIgH CHAIR ensuring that s/he is sitting in an upright, supported position. Bibs, muslin cloths, damp cloths, wipes and kitchen rolls are a must, as this might get messy!

START AT HOme so your baby is at ease and not distracted.

Be CAReFul WHeRe TO PuT yOuR SPOOnS. remember that once food has been in contact with saliva it becomes the perfect playground for bacteria to thrive.

IT’S AlSO gOOD to keep the spoon poised ready, in case the food comes straight out again.

IT’S gOOD TO InTRODuCe FOOD TO yOuR BABy WHen S/He IS HungRy. no rush, mummies and daddies, you need to be relaxed and unhurried! Let your baby explore and go at his or her own pace. this way you both will enjoy your weaning experience so much more.

FOR THe SAme ReASOn, if you feed directly from the pot, transferring the spoon from mouth to pot and back again, and then you put the pot back in the fridge, you’ll just be setting up a nice culture of bacteria in the pot. therefore it’s far better to spoon a portion out into a bowl, and then throw away any leftovers.

DO nOT WORRy if your baby doesn’t seem interested. it happens! Just give it another try in a couple of days.

SPOOnS! Keep plenty of spoons available, at least 3 – one to feed with and one for each of your baby’s hands. Let them hold the soft weaning spoons as the more familiar they are with cutlery now, the more confident they will be at picking up a knife and fork later on.

uSe yOuR CleAn FIngeR to put a taste on your baby’s lips first, and then use a tiny soft weaning spoon.

AlSO DO nOT WORRy ABOuT HOW muCH ACTuAlly gOeS DOWn. to start with, it’s more about getting the hang of new tastes and textures than being able to consume a 3 course meal!

At Plum, we make sure our meals nourish every aspect of a baby’s development – the parts that help them learn and explore, grow and develop motor skills, build their immune system and communicate and interact with others – the texture even helps exercise the tiny muscles used for speech. Because if we feed every part we can, your baby has more chance of being all he or she can be. All our recipes are based on Quinoa
