Speech & Language Development
Speech and language are tools that humans use to communicate and share thoughts, ideas, and emotions. Speech is talking which is one way that a language can be expressed. Language, on the other hand, is the set of rules, shared by the individuals who are communicating (exchanging information). Language may also be expressed through writing, signing, or even gestures.
Speech and Language Development The most intensive period of speech and language development for humans is during the first three years of life, a period when the brain is developing and maturing. During this period, the brain is able to absorb any language. Speech and language skills appear to develop best in an environment that is rich with sounds, sights, and consistent exposure to the speech and language of others. The beginning signs of communication occur during the first few days of life when an infant learns that a cry will bring food, comfort, and companionship. The newborn also begins to recognize important sounds in his or her environment. As they grow, infants begin to sort out the speech sounds (phonemes) or building blocks that compose Vivian Corporation the words of their language and by six Sanitas Buildings, Tower Street months of age, most children recognize the Msida MSD 1824 basic sounds of their native language. has the tone and cadence of human speech but does not contain real words. By the end of their first year, most children have mastered the ability to say a few simple words. By eighteen months of age, most children can say eight to ten words. By age two, most are putting words together in crude sentences such as “more bread.” During this period, children rapidly learn that words symbolize or represent objects, actions, and thoughts. At this age they also engage in representational or pretend play. At ages three, four, and five, a child’s
vocabulary rapidly increases, and he or she begins to master the rules of language. When should parents seek help? Parents should seek help when the child: • does not use words at an early stage (single words are expected to develop by 18 months of age) • does not understand simple vocabulary • is not being understood • consistently uses incorrect grammar • when social behaviour is inadequate • when attention skills are limited • when play skills are limited • cannot seem to understand or hear others well enough • has difficulty with feeding and swallowing • has difficulties with reading, spelling and writing.

From Nappies to Potties
What a Success
It is not easy for a child to learn how to use the potty. Going from nappies to underwear is a gradual process, which involves parents as much as the child. It is best to try and have fun with the child with this new “POTTY”.

During this stage the sole is made with diffentiated thickness and is flexible, reactive and non-slip. The front part must bend easily under the pressure of a hand. The front and back heights have been studied to ensure the correct development of the leg muscles.
sympathetic, your child will pick up on anxiety or frustration. It is so easy for a toddler to forget about the potty and the toilet. If accidents are making you irritable, leave training for a week or two and go back to nappies. • Teach boys to use the potty sitting down at first. They can progress to standing up later • You can devise a scheme to encourage your child with stickers or stars. • You could try giving your child other small rewards such as a piece of fruit, if you think it would encourage the process.

Stimulation to accompany your child’s first steps Children who start walking need shoes that can stimulate the soles of their feet, enhancing their foot development. The shoe must also be flexible, light, comfortable and have a look that already sets children apart. Sizes available are 20 to 27. During this stage the insole needs to continuously stimulate the foot sole. Children need to walk on irregular surfaces, in order to stimulate the soles of their feet and also to strengthen the muscles and improve their posture.

Safety & Protection Children in the Sun The sun is useful for the development of children. The sun stimulates the synthesis of Vitamin D which regulates the bone tissue. However there can be dangers when exposure to sunlight is excessive or occurs without taking sufficient precautions: the most immediate reaction is sunburn, which may appear as a simple irritation, but can also turn into an actual burn with the formation of blisters which fill with liquid. Children’s skin is thinner and more fragile than that of adults, and is by nature highly sensitive to sunlight. This is because the defence mechanisms (melanin and stratum corneum) are not yet fully developed; the skin is therefore more exposed to the risk of burns which, in time, could develop into more serious illnesses. Sunscreen during childhood is consequently of paramount importance, not only to protect children from the discomfort of sunburn, but also
to guarantee them healthy skin from when they are young. It is recommended to use products which have been made specifically to protect such sensitive skin from sunlight and provide deep hydration of the skin after exposure to the sun; ideally they should have the following characteristics: • Protection against UVA and UVB rays • Fragrance free • With organo-mineral filters • Microbiologically tested • Dermatologically tested on sensitive skins • Water Resistant • Even application
It is important to remember that it is essential to use high protection factor products to screen children’s sensitive skin.
Never leave sunscreen products in direct sunlight or at high temperatures Recommendations when exposing children to the sun • Keep children and infants away from direct sunlight, however; always apply a sunscreen product, applying it gently and evenly. • For complete protection, make sure children wear a hat, t-shirt and sunglasses with polarized lenses; infants and younger children should be kept under the sun umbrella during the hottest hours of the day. • Limit the hours of exposure, do not expose children to the sun for too long even if you use a sunscreen product. • Avoid exposure to the sun during the hottest hours, i.e. between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. • The correct application of the product is as important as your choice. • Apply the sunscreen product before exposure to the sun; it is recommended to apply the sunscreen about 20 minutes before exposure. • Re-apply frequently to maintain protection levels, especially after sweating or if they are wet or you have dried them. • Prevent dehydration by making sure children drink enough liquids. • Make sure the products do not come into contact with their eyes.

Mosquitos are found in our homes throughout the year with a drastic increase during the summer months. Here are some useful tips on how to enjoy warm summer evenings with your children, protecting your delicate skins effectively and safely from the discomfort of mosquitoes: • do not leave plant holders full of water on the window sills as these will attract unwanted insects into the house • limit the use of perfumes or deodorants with intense fragrances that could attract mosquitoes and midges • to defend children at night against insect bites, fit a mosquito net with a fine mesh above the bed or pram Natural insect repellents are basically divided into two broad categories • oils with high molecular weight – the most common being Neem Oil (Lillà of India), coconut oil, soybean oil • essential volatile oils- the most common being essential oil of citronella, peppermint, cedar, verbena, geranium, lavender, pine, cinnamon, rosemary, basil, thyme, garlic, etc..

Vitamins fall into two categories: fat soluble and water soluble. The Fat Soluble Vitamins – A, D, E and K - dissolve in fat and can be stored in the body. The Water Soluble Vitamins – C and the B complex Vitamins – Need to dissolve in water before the body can absorb them. Because of this, the body cannot store these vitamins. Any extra Vitamin C or B which is taken, above the Recommended Daily Intake, is not stored so one needs a fresh supply of these vitamins daily. Whereas vitamins are organic substances (derived from plants or animals), minerals are inorganic elements that come from the soil and water and are absorbed by plants or eaten by animals. The body needs larger amounts of some minerals such as Calcium, to grow and stay healthy. Other minerals like chromium, copper, iodine, iron, selenium and zinc are called trace minerals because one only needs very small amounts daily. The following tables will be going into more detail, with regards to the function of the main Vitamins and Minerals required by little children to grow and stay healthy.
Each Vitamin / Mineral source mentioned in the tables below should be given to your child when appropriate and as suggested by your paediatrician

Living on an island surrounded by the sea, it is obviously very important for your child to learn to swim at an early age. But what is the right age to begin to teach your child to swim? It is often a misconception that a child has to be at least school age or older before they are old enough to master the art of swimming, but reality is that some children can learn to swim before they can walk. Children aged between six months and three years have the ability to learn to swim on their own with the proper teaching, but a good age to start proper lessons with a qualified swimming instructor is around four years old. But there is a lot you can do to prepare your child before they start formal lessons, firstly by building their confidence in the water. Giving your baby confidence in the water can start from birth, by splashing water gently over your babies’ body every time you give them a bath. Once your child is happy and relaxed playing in the bath, start getting them used to having water splashed on their face as part of a game. You will then find that by getting your child used to water at home, it makes the transition of going to the swimming pool or sea much easier. When you feel the time is right for your child to start going to the swimming pool make sure you go prepared. Take a towel with a hood, or a towelling dressing gown, so as soon as you have finished you can wrap them up warmly, also a warm drink and perhaps a snack, as your child will probably be hungry and thirsty when you have finished. It is a good idea to take a few of their favourite waterproof toys to play with in the water and don’t forget the waterproof nappies if your child still needs them!
Teaching your child
to swim
There is a great deal you can do as a parent at the pool before you begin taking them to swimming lessons to make sure your child is as prepared as possible, this way they will learn to swim in the fastest possible time. A few children will always take to the water very quickly, with very little fear, although most will prefer to take things slowly, remember each child is different and make sure you allow your child to progress at a speed that suits them, and take each stage step by step. It is very important to establish trust with your child in the water. Any child will initially be more willing to try out new things with a parent than an instructor. To begin with it is a good idea just to sit your child on the side of the pool and let them splash their feet in the water as part of a game. Once your child is relaxed and happy get into the pool and gently lift your
child into the water. You can then progress to holding your child firmly around his/her tummy and move him/ her gently around the pool, talking and encouraging them all the time. Allowing them to get their face wet will also help them in the future as being able to put their face in the water is a significant step forward when learning to swim. Once they are happy being moved around the pool encourage your child to actively kick their legs and make bubbles, they will love this game and it begins to give them the feeling of moving through the water independently. Jumping in to the pool into a parents arms can also be a great game and a good confidence builder. Start with your child sitting on the side of the pool, count down, threetwo – one and let them fall into your arms. The more fun you make this game the quicker they will be jumping into the pool without any fear!
It is very important to establish trust with your child in the water. Any child will initially be more willing to try out new things with a parent than an instructor. 6
A few children will always take to the water very quickly, with very little fear, although most will prefer to take things slowly... Remember any child should never be left alone in the water until they are strong swimmers. Accidents in the water can happen in seconds, even if you are close by. You will know when your child has reached the stage when they need proper swimming lessons. It is always advisable to arrange for a qualified swimming instructor to teach your child, ask your family and friends for a recommendation. This way suitable lessons can be arranged for both your child’s age and ability. The whole event needs to be an enjoyable experience for your child so they learn quickly and want to return for the next lesson. Teaching your child to swim can sometimes be a frustrating process, but swimming is a very important part of your child’s education, and you must focus on getting them water safe and confident even if their swimming techniques are not perfect to start with. Their style will have years to develop and swimming is a skill that will keep them safe in water and give them a lifetime of pleasure.

Why is Calcium so important in a diet? Calcium has many very important functions in the body, which include both the healthy development of bones and the formation and protection of teeth. Our bodies are unable to make calcium, so it is important that we get sufficient amounts of this vital mineral from our diet. This is especially important in a young child. If a child’s calcium intake is insufficient during the time when their bones are growing and developing, the bones may not reach peak bone mass in adulthood and this could lead to problems in later life with increased chances of bone fractures and a disease called osteoporosis, also known as ‘brittle bone disease’. Calcium is also essential for strong and healthy teeth. Mineralization of our baby’s teeth begins in the womb before birth and the formation of enamel is completed during the first year of life. So making sure our children have sufficient calcium in their diet is very important for the correct
