Little consideration is given to whether this is actually the best option for the baby, whether the baby may actually be better off in a childcare centre rather than spending day after day with grandparents who may or may not be able to keep up with a demanding baby who needs to be kept constantly busy. The most important consideration must be given to choosing a high quality childcare centre as such an establishment will give parents peace of mind that their baby is being cared for in a safe and welcoming environment, by people who are qualified and experienced and who love the babies in their care as if they were their own. It is this reassurance that parents need as they seek to trust their little treasures into the hands of strangers, initially, who gradually become trusted second mums and dads. So what does constitute a quality service? What are prospective

How to choose a Childcare Centre for Your Child For most parents choosing a childcare centre for their child is a bewildering experience, fraught with anxiety. It is bad enough that in our society out-of-family childcare is still considered something of a last resort, to be considered only if there is no available family member to take care of baby whilst parents are at work. parents to look out for when visiting a childcare centre for the first time? What questions should one ask? First of all, it is a good idea to take your child along on such a first visit. If your child is more than just a few months old, their initial reactions will already help parents understand whether their child would be happy in this setting. It is also good to observe the reactions of the staff to the new child as well as to other children in their care. It is important that visits are made during a time when the centre is a hive of activity if one is to get a good idea of what goes on there. The most important aspects of the service to look into are: • The registration certificate of the Centre (issued by the Dept. of Social Welfare Standards) • The safety of the premises • Adequate outside play areas • The qualifications and experience of the carers

• The child to carer ratio (according to the National Standards) • The daily programme of activities • An extensive Manual of Policies and Procedures including Behaviour Management • A clear rate sheet and attendance policy • An open-door policy This is by no means an exhaustive list. Parents who are looking for a quality service for their child should consult with the list of registered childcare centres and obtain a copy of the National Standards for Child Day Care Services (2006) both issued by the Department of Social Welfare Standards within the Ministry of Education, Employment and the Family. Chicco takes care of every child with BPA free products Lately, the media have put the spotlight on a topic concerning the Bisphenol A (BPA), the base element of polycarbonate. This material is used to produce a large range of products, from items of daily use, such as cups, plates, containers, feeding bottles to devices used in the medical world or even safety equipment for sport activities. The topic in question raised the issue of the possible transfer of BPA in the food in such measures that it could represent a risk for health. Control entities, among which the EFSA (European Food Safety Authority), after conducting several tests and analysis, are able to confirm the safety of polycarbonate and therefore of feeding bottles made from this material. Confident in the results of the tests conducted by independent and 2

authoritative laboratories, Chicco guarantees that its polycarbonate feeding bottles, even in extreme conditions of use, have levels of BPA transfer into the food they contain, significantly lower than the already existing strict regulatory and legal limits. Chicco has always produced feeding bottles made from the highest standard raw materials and uses its experience to meet the needs of both children and parents. In this aim, with the new Chicco Feeding Bottle lines: Nature Glass and Well-Being, all made either from glass or Bisenphenol A Free plastic, it keeps providing its consumers with the widest possible choice. The new Well-Being range is totally Bisphenol A Free and highlights the commitment of the brand to satisfy the desires of its

consumers, whilst maintaining the trust-based relationship that has been developed over the decades. Thanks to the constant and consolidated collaborations with the world of academic research and a series of health experts, it is able to guarantee clear and accurate information to help consumers choose the ideal solution for every child. Chicco have started putting a “BPA Free logo on some related products. Chicco BPA free feeding bottles and drinking cups are now available on the market. All leading baby shops now offer a full range of Chicco BPA free products. The range consists of 150ml, 250ml and 330ml feeding bottles and also a range of drinking cups for children 6 months up.

Nurseries offer a safe environment to children where they can play, eat and sleep if need be. Play is very important for the development of children. The main focus of nurseries is to involve children in play. Playing with other children also helps develop their social skills. The effort to prepare the child’s bag every day becomes a routine, and having the correct tools to prepare water, milk and some food is important.

Here are some tips: • Cups preferably filled with water. • Feeding bottle with the required milk. If your child is on formula, you must provide the powdered milk in a special container. • A container with food as required by your child. • Change of clothes.

A must have for your baby! Chicco sterilising wipes. Practical when you are outdoors and do not have access to water. They are ideal for cleaning soothers, toys, cutlery, etc. They are individually packed and do not contain preservatives.

Make learning fun with board games Children are planning to go back to school and we would like to give you some tips to help your child improve his learning skills by playing board games. Playing games is an easy and excellent way to spend time together. As an added bonus, board games are also rich in learning opportunities. They satisfy your child’s competitive urges and the desire to master new skills and concepts, such as: • number and shape recognition, grouping, and counting • letter recognition and reading • visual perception and color recognition • eye-hand coordination and manual ability Board games are an opportunity for your child to be with you with no goal in mind beyond the joy of spending time together. Children want us to take pleasure in them, play with them, and 4

listen to them. Nothing encourages your child’s self-esteem more! So go to your nearest store and invest in some board game that suits your child’s needs. Board games can foster the ability to focus, and lengthen your child’s attention span by encouraging the completion of an exciting, enjoyable game. Even simple board games like Ludo and Snakes and Ladders offer meta-messages and life skills: Your luck can change in an instant — for the better or for the worse. Just when you feel in low spirits, you might hit the jackpot and ascend up high, if you stay in the game for just a few more moves. Are we playing by the rules or cheating rules today? Who shall be the winner? Children take playing seriously, so it is important that we help guide them

Playing games with your kids is a perfect way to spend time together and build learning skills at the same time through the contest. When a playing piece falls to a lower level, our kids really feel sad; when it rises up high, they are remarkably proud and happy, even if we know that it happened only by chance. Therefore, we need to help them balance the pleasure in playing the game with their very limited ability to manage frustration and deal with the idea of losing. For 3 to 5 year olds, winning is critical, we believe that it is okay to “help” them win. 6 year olds should begin to abide by the rules of fair play, tenuous as they may seem to a child who is losing a game. So we should be flexible with a 6 year old by “amending” the rules to win if we feel that they have to. We encourage you to acknowledge the child’s need for special rules. At the start of the game, you might want to ask, “Are we playing by regular or cheating rules today?”

Teaching your toddler

Good Table Manners

In today’s fast-paced world there’s often little time to eat together around the table, which is traditionally where table manners are taught; however these manners are extremely important because they are another way that people judge others. It is true that refinement of social skills takes years to master so it is best to teach politeness and consideration in small doses all year long. Here are some suggestions to practice at home remember though that the best way of teaching toddlers good manners is through parental example. Toddlers and your children are very observant of the adults around them and usually learn by imitating them. Realise that it will take them time to get it right so you must be persistent in a kind and considerate way, always explaining why certain things are not done at table. • Wash your hands before sitting down • When you sit down place the napkin in your lap • Sit up straight and don’t slouch • Always say ‘Please’ and ‘Thank You’ • Keep your elbow off the table • Never talk with your mouth full of food

• Never chew with your mouth open • Keep your knife our of your mouth • Never grab food from other people’s plates • Never wave or throw utensils • Use utensils quietly without banging them on the table or plate • Ask politely if you would like a second helping • Ask to be excused from the table

tip To encourage your preschooler to behave at table, make a place mat together with him and use it to track his progress. On a large sheet of paper trace together a plate, a fork, knife and spoon, napkin and glass in their proper location. Ask him to colour them all in and them laminate the place mat. Your child can then use it to set his place at table during mealtimes. This will give him a sense of things being in order and will teach him what goes where when setting the table. Then if he is well behaved during the meal, stick stars to the rim of the place mat and reward him when he reaches a specific target. In this way he will gain incentive besides having fun!

Carbohydrates in a child’s diet

All growing children should have a varied diet that is nutritionally balanced to include carbohydrates, proteins, fats and oils, minerals, vitamins and water. This balance allows the body to function correctly, which is especially important for growing toddlers between the ages of 1 – 4. But as a rough guide, an optimum diet for a child 2 years old or more should have around 55% of the total energy they require coming from a variety of carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are needed as the body’s primary source of energy. There are three major types of carbohydrates, simple carbohydrates, complex carbohydrates or starch and dietary fibre. Simple carbohydrates are found in milk, fruits and sugar, while complex carbohydrates or starches are found in grains or cereals such as whole grain pasta, rice, barley, oats, and wheat, and in some root vegetables including parsnips and potatoes. A healthy diet should contain plenty of starchy foods, particularly the unrefined carbohydrates such as brown rice or whole-grain bread which are beneficial for health, as they provide a rich source of vitamin B and essential dietary fibre. Carbohydrates made up of sugars are not essential foods.

They provide energy (calories) but no nutrients, and are made up of refined and processed foods. Giving your children sweets occasionally as a treat is not harmful to a healthy toddler, but excessive sugar can lead to tooth decay when eaten between meals, especially in sticky snack foods that cling to the teeth, and also provides the child with ‘empty calories’ that can lead to obesity.

SMA Progress Kids, a growing up milk for children aged one to four can be a major source of carbohydrate for young children. This delicious vanilla flavoured milk is made up of 57% carbohydrate along with protein and numerous vitamins and minerals essential for healthy growth. If given 2 – 3 times a day along with a balanced varied diet, it may provide a nutritional safety net for your growing child and provide them with the right amount of carbohydrate that will give them the energy to play all day!
