The New Chicco Physio Soothers with ring NOW AVAILABLE IN BOTH LATEX AND SILICONE Here are some tips for the use of a soother: BENEFITS • Sucking is an inborn instinct that allows children to eat. • It also satisfies the psychological need for reassurance and gratification in newborns, and has soothing and calming effects. • Sucking is also one of the first and most important moments of neuromuscular learning that begins when the baby is still in the mother’s womb.
GOOD REASONS • The soother may be used to satisfy the sucking instinct of newborns and calm their crying. • The sucking movement helps the 2
mouth to develop properly. It is in fact recognised that using a soother for 24 months is not harmful for the mouth; on the contrary it helps to prevent some dental malocclusions. On the other hand, thumb sucking can cause damage because the thumb exercises intense pressure on the teeth and the palate and it is more cumbersome and compact. It is also very difficult for children to grow out of this habit. • Furthermore, according to recent research published by Pediatrics (the official body of the American Academy of Pediatrics), the use of a soother during sleep time can help reduce the risk of SIDS (cot death): for reasons connected to breathing and to the awakening threshold, conditioned by the use of soothers.

SOME PRECAUTIONS • Do not use with sweet substances to prevent tooth decay. • Limit the time of daily use until breast-feeding is well under way and in the vent of a momentary decrease of the production of milk. • Do not offer the soother whenever the baby cries because crying often indicates a desire to communicate with the mother. • It is recommended to reduce the use of the soother in cases of recurring medium otitis and evident dental malocclusions.

The characteristics found in the Chicco soother
The small grooves on the head of the teat reproduce the natural palatine grooves, the reference points from the tongue during the physiological sucking and swallowing functions.
The teat neck is very slim which allows the mouth to close properly.
The shape of the teat correctly distributes the strength of the tongue movement over the entire palate, even sideways, and this helps the tongue to develop properly.
The tongue hollow is smaller in size and allows the tongue to remain in its natural position on the palate.
...and do not forget to carry the
Chicco cleansing wipes when you are out and about, for the cleaning of teats, soothers, and other small baby objects‌when water is not handy!

The Physiological Development
of children’s feet
In the first years of life, children pass through important phases in which they develop their motor skills. Feet play an important role and therefore require special attention during the various stages of baby’s growth. For this reason we have asked Dr Cynthia Formosa PhD, MSc. Pod [U.K], D.Pod, S.R.Pod who is both a Lecturer and Head of the Podiatry Department Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Malta to give us some vital hints on how one should select their child’s shoe.
The importance of
wearing good shoes for children Bones in children’s feet remain soft and wearing incorrect shoes may deform their feet. Wearing the right shoe is vital as this could prevent certain foot problems in the developing feet. Correct footwear protects the foot from extremes of temperature, moisture, hard surfaces, knocks and scratches. Every child’s growth is different and shoes should be checked regularly for size and outgrown shoes need to be replaced since these could cause foot and toe deformities. Handing down of shoes should also be avoided in children. Shoes that are too large, too small or do not fit properly can cause lifelong problems, which are often easily avoided by following a few simple pieces of advice. The following advice features important aspects when purchasing new footwear for children. • Always have both feet measured for length and width • Shoes should be held on the foot with laces, straps or Velcro • The heel height should be low and the heel should have a broad base.
• When choosing a pair of shoes for your children, leather is best material because it breathes. Synthetic materials e.g. nylon, plastic or rubber can cause the foot to sweat, which may increase the likelihood of contracting athlete’s foot or verrucae pedis [warts]. • Soles should be strong and flexible with a good gripping surface. • The shape of the toe box of the shoe should allow the toes to move freely and not be squashed from the top or the sides • The shoes should fit exactly around the heel without being loose or tight • Socks and tights that are too small or made from synthetic materials such as nylon can cause similar problems to shoes that are too small, particularly in very young children. Foot care, shoe selection, correct fitting and education are essential issues in protecting your children’s feet from potential damage and other complications in later life. Dr Cynthia Formosa Podiatrist/Lecturer University of Malta

Chicco’s answer to the needs
of little feet The materials: the materials are soft and lightweight, so that the shoes do not hinder baby’s freedom of movement. Also they are chosen for their breathing characteristics to ensure optimal hygienic conditions. The sole: Chicco’s Physiological Shoes have variable thickness soles that are flexible, reactive and non-slip. These soles are a result of in-depth anatomical studies and follow the natural flexing of the feet. The insole: Chicco’s shoes have special insoles designed to constantly stimulate the sole of the foot, simulating the kind of exercise provided by walking on uneven ground. The upper part: the rounded toe box leaves enough room to the toes, in this way the shoes fit correctly and help baby better distribute its own weight, thus acquiring a correct body posture.

There’s nothing young children like more than dressing up to become a fairy or a pirate for the day. But carnival outfits are expensive and, just
after Christmas, finding extra money’s hard. So here are some ideas about making your toddler’s outfit at home. With a little ingenuity and some face paints, you can help them transform into their fantasy character. Carnival Costumes You can put a costume together quite simply with clothes you have at home. Start by dressing your child in a matching polo neck top and leggings or trousers. This can be your
10
basis for many different outfits and it won’t cost you anything. Now you’re ready for the fun bits. A bright red basic outfit could become a lobster or a ladybug. Add big stuffed mittens to make claws and you’ve got a lobster! Attach black spots cut out of felt with Velcro or fabric glue and junior’s a ladybird! Transform a green track suit into a grasshopper by adding paper or felt wings with safety pins. Create a turtle with a cardboard shell, painted and fastened with elastic straps. A pink or purple outfit? You’re half way to a fairy princess. Just add inexpensive wings and a tiara. Don’t forget the wand! A ballet tutu adds to the costume. Haven’t got a tutu? Make one with a piece of cheap tulle or colorful netting. Easy! If your toddler wants to become a busy bee, start
Adding some face paints to the outfits can add the final touch and be fun, so here are some easy tips and ideas for you. Firstly if you have never put face paint on your child it is very important to do a skin test a few days before to make sure there is no allergic reaction. Do this by putting a little amount of the paint on the inside of your child’s wrist and leave for at least 60 minutes to see if any reaction develops. Provided that there is no ill effect from using the paint on your child’s wrist you are ready to begin. Buy water based face paints from a reputable manufacturer to make sure they are good quality. Lay out your face paints along with a good supply of water for washing brushes and sponges. You do not need to put any cream or moisturizer on your child’s skin before you begin. Water based face paint is best applied directly onto clean, dry skin. Always apply the base colour first, using a damp sponge. Make sure that the sponge is not too wet by squeezing out any excess water or the finished result may look streaky. If you want to get a deeper colour, allow the first coat to dry and then apply a second coat. If your chosen design has a variety of light and dark colours, always apply the lighter colour first, if possible. Add the detail with the paint brushes, the finer a brush you use, the more detail you can achieve. with a yellow basic outfit and add If it is your first time trying to face paint, begin with a simple design stripes with black masking tape. and if possible practice before Carnival day. Have a mirror at hand Or, do the opposite. Decorate a to show your child your progress each step of the way and make the black track suit with yellow duct whole event fun for you both! Outfit made and face painted, now your or safety tape. little angel is ready for a great fun Pair a striped top with red or day out for all the family at black pants. Tuck them into a pair of Carnival – just remember comfy boots or roll them up to just you will be on your feet all under the knees then add an eye day so make sure you patch, a large metal medallion and a all wear some comfy spotted head scarf. Simmer for about 8 mins until pasta is tender. 7. Add parmesan if desired. 8. Once mixture is cooled, add to blender and puree to desired consistency.
How do we know if our children are getting enough to eat? The food our children eat supplies the energy that they need to work, play and grow. We measure that energy in calories. The more they move, the more energy they use up and the more food they require, but it’s not that simple. The amount of food they need also depends on how big they are and how quickly they are growing. Sometimes as mothers and especially grandmothers who might have memories of harder times, we can be concerned that
they are not eating enough to grow and stay healthy. It’s particularly hard with toddlers. They often seem too busy to sit down and eat properly, and so we worry. Aside from charting their progress in height and weight, how can we be sure that our child is getting enough calories? The amount of energy from food a child aged between 1 and 4 needs does depend on their normal activity, some children run around all day and never seem to sit still, whilst others are quite happy to sit and draw pictures or do jigsaw puzzles and their normal activity not being much more than playing in the park or walking to and from kindergarten. A rough rule for a normal 2 – 3 year old would be around 1000 calories a day, whilst if the same aged child was a very active toddler they could need around 1400 calories a day. So when our children reach the age of 12 months and they start experiencing solid food, parents may worry when they become picky and unwilling to try new tastes and we may struggle to provide the calories they need.
SMA Progress Kids provides a safety net that you can use to bridge the nutritional requirements at this important time in their growth and development. It provides approx 22 calories per serving drink, so providing between 2 to 3 cups a day together with a normal healthy diet, will help them towards receiving all the nutritional and calorific values they need to work, rest and play!
If you have any further questions regarding SMA Progress Kids or your child’s nutritional needs please call SMA Nutrition on Malta freephone

Only nature s best in the
Plasmon jars In the first issue of the 2011, we would like to tell you more about the origins of the ingredients which find themselves in the Plasmon jars. It is very important for you to know that great care is taken when preparing Plasmon jars, since babies are very delicate and they deserve the best!
What is the concept of the Oasi® Plasmon? The Concept of Oasi® Plasmon, started 30 years ago. This Concept sets guidelines for the production chain, to guarantee top quality products thanks to top of the range ingredients, which go through rigorous testing and controls. The Oasi® Plasmon focuses on simplicity. The raw material is produced according to rigorous guidelines of cultivation and breeding. It sets controls at every stage of the process: from the 14
soil in which the vegetable is going to be cultivated to what the animals will be fed; from the transportation and harvesting of the raw material to the bottling of the finished products. What is required for a product to pass from the Oasi® Plasmon test? The Oasi® Plasmon Concept requires that fields where the vegetables and fruit are grown, are far away from polluted areas such as industrial areas. The latter is one of the most important criteria which one needs to fulfill.
For each raw material, the Oasi® Plasmon has studied the best cultivation and breeding method. For example, Plasmon has found the best time of day to harvest the vegetables to ensure high quality vegetables. Fruits are collected at the proper degree of ripeness. A team of vets and agronomists control and record all the stages of cultivation and breeding process; infact on each Plasmon Jar, one can find a Batch Code Number which can lead you back to the orchard which was used in the that particular jar of Plasmon Strained Apple, for example.
What are the Golden Oasi® Plasmon rules? 1. Raw Materials are not bought off the market Plasmon defines cultivation and breeding rules for all its raw materials – be it Apples, Chicken, Carrots, Salmon. This gives Plasmon the ability to ensure high quality products and to trace all its raw materials in case of an emergency. 2. All raw materials need to be re-traceable It is very important for Plasmon to be able to re-trace all its raw materials. Therefore during the production cycle each step, from the field to the end product, is recorded and traceable. 3. A proactive quality system A highly specialised team studies all the possible problems which might occur during production to ensure that all the necessary prevention is taken. Even the slightest possibility is taken into consideration. 4. Pesticides’ policy Plasmon favours the use of natural methods to eliminate harmful pests that might damage the crops. Plasmon uses the Mating Disruption technique, which leads to the reduction of these pests without using any pesticides. Plasmon favours the presence of ladybirds through the cultivation of wheat next to the fruit orchards.
6. Rigorous Breeding guidelines During the farming, the use directly or indirectly – of hormone and antihormonal substances is forbidden. There are also set guidelines for slaughtering; Plasmon Animals are slaughtered first on a set day and carcasses are clearly identified. The supplier must guarantee the traceability of the farm in each phase of transport, production and storage. 7. Rigorous Farm Selection The farms must be located at least 1 km far from pollution source (motorways, bypasses, refuse dumps and any high risk industrial plants in environmental terms). Farms are visited by a team of specialised people (agronomists, vets) who ensure that they fulfil all the quality standards required by the Oasi. Why aren’t Plasmon products called Organic? Plasmon follows the standards of the Oasi® Plasmon and not of the Organic guideline, as the standards set out by the Oasi® Plasmon are superior and ensure better high quality baby food. The following are two of the major differences between Organic Farming (according to the Organic Agriculture Reg. 834/2007 – 889/2008) and the Oasi®
Plasmon:
• Organic farming mainly takes care only of cultivation methods and treatments (no pesticides, no chemical fertilizers, etc.) but does not consider other risks, such as natural and environmental contaminants. This means that organic farming does not take into consideration contaminants such as mycotoxins, heavy metals and nitrates which might contaminate the baby food. • In Organic farming it is not required to have one’s field away from polluted areas, therefore there is the possibility of cultivating crops according to organic guidelines but in polluted areas (near motorways etc…) This is why Plasmon created the concept of Oasi® Plasmon to ensure rigorous controls and high quality baby food. Our babies are very delicate and they deserve safe baby food.

Baby Cereals Until stocks last
Following milk, the next food ingredient which needs to be introduced are the baby Cereals. These cereals give the baby the opportunity to experience semi solid foods and eating from the spoon. Not all babies will be ready for this step at the same time therefore you need to always consult your paediatrician to see when it’s best to start weaning. Cereals should be an integral part of your baby’s diet as they are a good source of carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are an essential source of energy, of which the baby requires high levels since she would be growing at a very fast pace. Carbohydrates also keep the baby feeling full for longer after eating. How to prepare the cereal One can prepare the cereal in the following manner: • Prepare around 200ml warm water / milk / broth. • Sprinkle two tablespoons of cereal into the liquid and beat with a fork at the same time. • Keep on beating the cereal until you get a creamy texture. Plasmon offers you seven healthy varieties of cereals enriched with Calcium, Phosphorus and Vitamins to ensure a healthy growth for your baby. They also have a great creamy texture to make it easier for your baby to taste and accept. Plasmon Cereals do not contain any preservatives and are best served warm. 16
Plasmon Crema di Riso The Crema di Riso (Rice Cereal) is the first cereal which should be introduced to your baby. This is a plain, single grain, Gluten Free cereal, therefore safe for your baby to avoid any allergies.
Plasmon Crema di Mais e Tapioca The Crema di Mais e Tapioca is another plain, Gluten Free cereal as the Plasmon Rice cereal, but has an added characteristic. The Tapioca included in this cereal is a tuber which is a natural laxative. Therefore this cereal helps constipated babies.
Plasmon Semolina The Semolina is another single grain cereal, but is not a Gluten Free Cereal. Therefore it should be introduced to the baby once you are sure that she is not allergic to Gluten. One can add either Milk, broth or water depending on how it is going to be served.
Plasmon Crema di Riso with fruit Ingredients • 1 jar or Plasmon Strained Apple • 2 table spoons of Plasmon Crema Di Riso. Method • Prepare the cereal as indicated on the opposite page. • Add half a jar of Plasmon Strained Apple and mix well. This is a simple recipe which can be given to your baby to introduce the apple. Any other ingredient can be introduced to your child in this manner.
Plasmon 4 Cereals The Plasmon 4 Cereals is a cereal made up from four different cereals (wheat, rice, barley and oats) and contains Gluten. This cereal is another versatile cereal where you can use it for any meal which you prefer, depending on the ingredients which you add to it.
Plasmon Cereal with Fresh Fruit Ingredients 2 table spoons of Plasmon Crema Di Riso. ¼ of a Ripe Banana Method Prepare the cereal as indicated above. Dice the banana in very small pieces and add them to the cereal. Mix well and serve warm.
Now wit instructionh in English s
This recipe is suitable for older babies who are ready for chunkier foods. This will help them to learn how to chew. You can add any other fruit which you prefer such as boiled apples, peaches or apricot.
Plasmon Cereale con Mela, Banana e latte The Plasmon cereal with Apple, Banana and Milk is a complete cereal which offers your baby a cereal with a great taste. Similar to the above, this cereal can either be given at breakfast or as a snack during the day, one just needs to add water.
Plasmon Cereale con frutta, latte e biscotto The Plasmon cereal with fruit, milk and Plasmon biscuits is a complete cereal which offers your baby a cereal with a great taste. This cereal makes a great breakfast or a great snack. You just need to add water since it already has milk and fruit added to it.
Plasmon Nanna Rice Cereal with Marrows & Carrots The Plasmon Nanna Rice Cereal with vegetables is designed specifically to be given in the evening; so as not to be too heavy for night time and yet not to be too light to leave your baby hungry. This Cereal is a gluten free cereal which is complete with vegetables so you only need to add either water or broth. Preston James Mercieca
