Nourishing Shower Gel & Face and Body Moisturisers Focus on dry skin The particularly fragile skin of babies does not fulfil its barrier function as effectively as that of an adult. Its hydrolipidic film is finer, and the slightest imbalance can alter this delicate protection. As a result, the skin becomes more permeable to stress which can manifest itself in minor skin disorders (dryness, tightness, redness, irritations etc.). For very dry skin, comfort is crucial. Specifically formulated for fragile skin, ABCDerm Cold Cream Nourishing cleansing cream & ABCDerm Cold Cream Face & Body moisturisers gently cleanse and nourish, soothing the skin. ABCDerm Cold Cream Nourishing cleansing cream helps regain supple, soft and comfortable skin. Its mild surfactants cleanse without attacking. Its superfatting agents, beeswax and apricot kernel oil, rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids, help restore the hydrolipidic film and the barrier function of the skin. ABCDerm Cold Cream Face moisturiser Is specifically formulated for the face (water-in-oil emulsion) protecting the skin from external stresses such as the cold and wind.
ABCDerm Cold Cream Face & Body moisturisers Intensely nourish the fragile, delicate skin of babies and children, reducing the sensations of dryness, discomfort and tightness thanks to its creamy “cold cream” texture.
Good to know • Developed in accordance with an exclusive, stringent ABCDerm formulation charter • Optimal doses and traceability of active ingredients • Contains no dermatologically questionable ingredients • 100% high-safety and high-tolerance products tailored to the delicate skin of babies • Paraben-free • Soothing fragrance

FIRST NUMBERS Maths is a key skill which children need to acquire for use in their everyday lives. There are many aspects to maths, and these can be explored at an early age through everyday informal contexts. There are also many activities and books available for your child to develop their maths skills further in preparation for school.
Number Recognition Number recognition to ten and subsequently twenty and then further is a key part of early maths. To begin with children can be introduced to numbers up to five and when able to recognise these, move on to numbers to ten. A lovely way to introduce numbers to ten and develop your child’s coordination is through hopscotch or a number puzzle. By talking about numbers in the environment your child will develop the ability to recognise numbers more quickly e.g. mention the number bus you are catching, the numbers on houses, numbers in car registrations, telephone numbers. Give them the opportunity to see the different contexts in which numbers are used around them. A simple Numbers 1-20 Wall Chart in your child’s playroom or bedroom will reinforce number recognition on a daily basis.

Counting Counting is also an important part of early mathematics and a skill needed in our daily lives. Begin by encouraging your child to count to five, perhaps through familiar number songs. You can also develop counting skills through simple jigsaws which are ideal for younger children such as a Number Jigsaw Puzzle. When they are confident with counting to five, count to ten and subsequently twenty. By using fun and familiar objects counting can be taught in an enjoyable way such as by counting teddies, toy cars, marbles, shells or even chocolate buttons! Keep practising this skill until your child is competent with counting objects to five. You could develop this further through a simple Number Puzzle. As and when you feel your child is ready, you can introduce them to counting objects to ten and then progress further to twenty. Give your child time at each stage to grasp the concept and number skills involved.

FIRST LETTERS Learning the letters of the Alphabet
Most children begin recognising some letters between the ages of 2 and 3 and can identify most letters between 4 and 5. This means that you can start teaching your child the alphabet when he is around 2 — but do not expect full mastery for some time. Toddlers learn differently from older children, so do not pull out the flashcards and audiotapes just yet. Instead, rely on visual aids such as colorful alphabet picture books. Your child will have a great time pointing out the letters he knows, as well as colors, shapes, animals, and other objects in the book. The first step in teaching the alphabet is getting your child interested in listening to stories. At around age 2 or 3, children who are frequently read to, get the idea that books contain print, which is made up of letters. There are lots of fun ways to introduce your child to individual letters. Sign his name to his artwork, then point out each letter one by one. Eventually he will get the idea that those letters, put together, stand for his name. You can reinforce this identification in many ways such as Alphabet letters forming his name on the door of his room, perhaps, or a toy or puzzle personalised with his name. Or help your child play with alphabet puzzles. Once he recognises a letter, play word games e.g. “What words start with ‘B’? Ball, baby, boy ...” or use the first letter of his name as the starting point — “Your special letter is ‘M,’ for Matthew; can you think of any other ‘M’ words?” If your child seems interested, feel free to continue helping your child learn more letters. But if he is under 4 and shows no interest, it is best to let it go for a while.

10 reasons why you should read to your kids
For many parents, intelligence is probably at the top of their list. We all want bright, smart children, which is why we spend so much time choosing the right schools and making sure they have a great teacher. But remember: as a parent, it is up to you to boost your children’s learning potential simply by making books a big part of their lives. We all know reading to our kids is a good thing—but are you familiar with the specific advantages your toddler or preschool-age kids can receive by being exposed to the merits of reading? Below are some benefits that highlight the importance of reading to your child between the ages of two and five.
1. A stronger relationship with you. As your child grows older, s/he will be on the move, playing, running, and constantly exploring his environment. Snuggling up with a book lets the two of you slow down and recapture that sweet, cuddly time you enjoyed when s/he was a baby. Instead of being seen as a chore or a task, reading will become a nurturing activity that will bring the both of you closer together. 2. Academic excellence. One of the primary benefits of reading to toddlers and preschoolers is a higher aptitude for learning in general. Numerous studies have shown that students who are exposed to reading before preschool are more likely to do well in all factors of formal education.
3. Basic speech skills. Throughout toddlerhood and preschool, your child is learning critical language and enunciation skills. By listening to you read, your child is reinforcing the basic sounds that form language. As a preschooler, your child will likely begin sounding out words on his own. 4. The basics of how to read a book. Children are not born with an innate knowledge that text is read from left to right, or that the words on a page are separate from the images. Essential pre-reading skills like these are among the major benefits of early reading. 5. Better communication skills. When you spend time reading to toddlers, they will be much more likely to express themselves and relate to others in a healthy way. By witnessing the interactions between the characters in the books you read, as well as the contact with you during story time, your child is gaining valuable communication skills.

6. Mastery of language. Early reading for toddlers has been linked to a better grasp of the fundamentals of language as they approach school age.

7. More logical thinking skills. Another illustration of the importance of reading to children is their ability to grasp abstract concepts, apply logic in various scenarios, recognize cause and effect, and utilize good judgment. As your toddler or preschooler begins to relate the scenarios in books to what is happening in his own world, s/he will become more excited about the stories you share.
9. Enhanced concentration and discipline. Toddlers may initially squirm and become distracted during story time, but eventually they will learn to stay put for the duration of the book. Along with reading comprehension comes a stronger self-discipline, longer attention span, and better memory retention, all of which will serve your child well when s/he enters school.
8. Acclimation to new experiences. As your child approaches a major developmental milestone or a potentially stressful experience, sharing a relevant story is a great way to help ease the transition. For instance, if your little one is nervous about starting preschool, reading a story dealing with this topic shows that her/his anxiety is normal.
10. The knowledge that reading is fun! Early reading for toddlers helps them view books as an indulgence, not a chore. Kids who are exposed to reading are much more likely to choose books over video games, television, and other forms of entertainment as they grow older.
Books have the power to benefit toddlers and preschoolers in a myriad of ways. As a parent, reading to your child is one of the most important things you can do to prepare him with a foundation for academic excellence.

Choosing a
childcare centre What to look for artiCle by lara Caruana - graduate in psyChology
Taking the decision as to whether or not you should be sending your child to a childcare centre is a very difficult task. It might actually be one of the toughest decisions during parenthood. Choosing the best childcare centre for your family might be even tougher. Below are some tips to follow to help you decide. What to look out for? What’s best for your child?
• • • • •
Shop around Check which childcare centres are found in locations which are convenient for you (close to home, work or relatives) way ahead you will be needing the service. Do not leave up till the last minute to start weighing your options.
•
Set appointments Visit the childcare centres of interest by appointment, preferably during peak hours (between 09:00 and 13:00) in order to observe the setting when busy. Avoid going for a visit in a rush. Make sure to ask and observe important issues. Just some of them: • What are the opening days and hours? • Which are, if any, the holidays during the year on which the centre is closed? • Which qualifications do the centre manager and child carers have? • Is the staff to children ratio being followed?
•
•
•
How are the children divided? What is the daily schedule? Is there a spacious outdoor area? Are the rooms big enough? What are the policies and procedures? (especially on healthy eating, aggressive behaviour, disciplinary methods used) How does the childcare centre document the progress and activities and how often? Is there a minimum of hours weekly that you need to send your child? Price of service? (if you are a paying customer, or need extra hours) Is there a registration fee?
Free childcare scheme The free childcare scheme has been launched in April 2014 for all working parents, or those parents following a study course which will eventually help them find employment. Whilst visiting childcare centres, ask for a copy of the application form and for any information related to the scheme. Evaluate Once you have gathered all the information from the various childcare centres, evaluate your options. Do not choose a childcare centre on the spur of the moment. Base your decision on what you think is best for you and for your child.
Lara Caruana forms part of the management of a chain of childcare centres, is a graduate in Psychology and mum to 2 little boys, Zach and Ayvin. 12 • VIVIAN BABY • september 2016
FAQs Should I send my child to a childcare centre? Do not feel guilty. You are offering your child a new world of opportunities, while helping your family live more comfortably. Children develop (mentally, physically and socially) at a faster rate and they will start getting ready for kindergarten. How will I know what my child has been doing? Developing a good relationship with the staff is the first step to putting your mind at rest. Ask for feedback on a daily basis and when in doubt, ask. Will my child be well looked after? This is the main reason why you should visit childcare centres during peak hours. This will give you an idea of how staff relate with children under their care. Do hand over details which you deem important (your child’s habits, preferences, key words, napping times, eating habits and so on) to the carers. The transition from home-based care to a childcare centre might be tough for both the parents and the child, however once the child feels loved, safe and realises that the basic needs are being met s/he will settle and furthermore flourish. Done correctly, sending your child to a childcare centre might be one of the best decisions you will ever take towards its development.
first aid for Cuts & Grazes Severe Bleeding What to look for If the bleeding does not stop, or if there is a foreign object in the cut, or you think it might be infected, then you should tell them to see a health care professional. What to do • Clean the wound by rinsing it under running water or using alcohol-free wipes. • Pat it dry, using a gauze swab and cover it with sterile gauze. If you do not have these, then use a clean, non-fluffy cloth. • Raise and support the part of the body that is injured. If it is a hand or arm, raise it above the head. If it is a lower limb, lay them down and raise the cut area above the level of the heart. This will help stop the bleeding. • Remove the gauze covering the wound and apply a sterile dressing. • If you think that there is any risk of infection, then suggest they see a health care professional. 14 • VIVIAN BABY • september 2016
When bleeding is severe, it can be dramatic and distressing. If someone is bleeding and is not controlled quickly, they may develop shock and lose consciousness. Shock does not mean emotional shock, but is a life-threatening condition, often caused by loss of blood. If someone is bleeding from their mouth or nose, they may find it hard to breathe, so you should keep a close eye on them in case they become unresponsive. If there is an object in their wound, do not press directly onto it, as it will hurt, but leave it in there and bandage around it. With all open wounds, there is a risk of infection, so wash your hands and use gloves (if you have any) to help prevent any cross infection.
What you need to do severe bleeding Your priority is to stop the bleeding. Protect yourself by wearing gloves. If the wound is covered by the casualty’s clothing, remove or cut the clothes to uncover the wound.
If there is an object in the wound If there is an object in there, do not pull it out, because it may be acting as a plug to reduce the bleeding. Instead, leave it in and apply pressure on either side of it with a pad (such as a clean cloth) or fingers, until a sterile dressing is available.
If there is no object in the wound Follow the steps below for treating severe bleeding. Put direct pressure on the wound and elevate the area where the wound is, using a sterile dressing if possible, to stop the bleeding.

Cuts and grazes are common inju ries that can usually be treated at home. A cut is when the skin is fully broken, and a graze is when only the top layers of skin are scraped off. Usually, all you need to do is cle an the cut or graze to reduce infection and apply pre ssure and raise the injury to sto p the bleeding. The wound should heal by itself in a few days.
Bumps and Bruises Call for an Ambulance 112. While waiting for help • Firmly wrap a bandage around the pad or dressing on top of the wound to control the bleeding. Make it firm enough to maintain pressure but not so tight that it restricts their circulation. • Treat them for shock: lay them down with their head low and their legs raised and supported. • If blood shows through the pad or dressing, do not remove it: apply a second dressing on top of the first one. If blood then seeps through both dressings, remove both of them and replace them with a fresh dressing. When changing dressings, make sure you keep pressure applied to where the bleeding is coming from. • If you can, support the injured area. For example, you can rest a leg on some cushions, or for an arm you can make a sling. • Keep checking the casualty’s breathing, pulse and level of response. • If they become unresponsive at any point, open their airway, check their breathing, and prepare to treat someone who has become unresponsive.
After someone has had an injury to the skin, they will often get a bump or a bruise. Bumps and bruises may not appear straight away but the skin can still be painful and often feel tender or swollen at first. Bumps are swellings caused by fluid under the surface of the skin. Bruises are bluish or purple-coloured patches that appear because tiny blood vessels beneath the skin burst and leak blood into the soft tissue. As they heal, bruises usually change to a yellowish green colour. What you need to do If someone has a bump or bruise, hold something cold onto the skin straight after the injury to help it heal and reduce the pain. This could be a bag of peas or ice wrapped in a cloth, or a cold compress if you have one. Do not leave it on for more than ten minutes. If the injury is painful then help them to lie down and raise the area above their heart, if possible, to help slow the flow of blood to the area and so reduce the swelling. If a bump or bruise becomes very swollen or very painful, then you should tell them to see a healthcare professional for advice.
It is a good idea to attend a course now before your need arises. St John Ambulance has been teaching first aid to the public in since 1886. Malta was the first branch of St John Ambulance to be established outside of England.
Courses are held frequently at the St John Ambulance Training Centre in Valletta and Paola. Courses are also held on-site at various organizations and places of work. www.sjamalta.org | Email: training@sjamalta.org Tel: 21245740 | Mobile: 79245740 By St John Ambulance CEO Franco J Piccinino

First 1000 days of life and beyond Bye bye baby! Hello toddler! Your precious little ones have just had their first birthday! Congratulations! The toddler age is an age of wonder, humour and tantrums but without any doubt, toddlerhood is an exciting phase full of various milestones! What is a growing up milk formula? Between the age of one and four, your child will go through some fascinating leaps in development both physically and mentally. Hence, it is of the utmost importance that your little one is provided with a nutritionally complete growing up milk formula, which can support this intense period of growth. 16 • VIVIAN BABY • september 2016
How much growing up milk should I give? By the age of one, most children would have already established a relationship with solid food and they will be able to eat most of the foods prepared by the family. However, it is very important to keep in mind that a growing up milk formula must be incorporated as part of a healthy varied diet and therefore, it should never be used as a meal replacement as if the formula is given in excess, it might spoil the apetite of your little one. Generally, 1 to 2 servings of milk formula of 200 mL each are sufficient to supply the toddler with all the necessary key nutrients.
Introducing SMA PRO Progress Kids Throughout the years, SMA® Nutrition has invested a lot in the study of early life nutrition inspired by the aim of building a nutritional foundation for life. As a result of this research, SMA PRO Progress Kids is born replacing the previous SMA Progress Kids milk formula. What is SMA PRO Progress Kids? SMA PRO Progress Kids is the most advanced growing up milk formula yet specifically tailored for children between the age of one and four. This formula is based on cow’s milk and designed in such a way that the actively growing toddler is provided with a balanced input of carbohydrates, proteins, fats as well as various essential vitamins and minerals such as iron, calcium, vitamins A, C and D which are necessary to support the healthy growth and development of the toddler.5 What has changed from the SMA Progress Kids to the SMA PRO Progress Kids? The level of protein in the SMA PRO Progress Kids milk formula has changed from 1.8 g to 1.5 g per 100ml serving of milk. By reducing the total amount of protein per milk serving, we can rest assured that
Vitamin D & Calcium
Vitamin D is crucial for the absorption of calcium required for the growth and development of strong bones and teeth of the little loved ones.2 2 servings of 200 mL each of formula milk will contribute to 86% of the daily recommended intake of your toddler.
Iron
SMA PRO Progress Kids is fortified with iron approximately 40 times more than fresh cow’s milk thus reducing the risk of developing iron deficiency. The presence of iron in the formula aids in the brain development of the toddler.7 2 servings of 200 mL each of formula milk will contribute to 60% of the daily recommended intake of your toddler.
the correct amount of protein is being supplied to your little one sufficient to support normal growth and development of the toddler whilst also taking a stand against the obesity crisis.5,6 SMA PRO Progress Kids has also increased the level of Vitamin D. This is because according to the National Pre-School Nutrition Survey; 23% of 1-year old and 10% of 2- and 3- year old toddlers do not have an adequate intake of Vitamin D.5 SMA PRO Progress solves this problem by providing at least 108% of the daily recommended intake of Vitamin D per 400 ml serving of milk.5 How does SMA PRO Progress Kids compare with fresh cow’s milk? • Contains less saturated fats and salt than fresh cow’s milk4 • Is nutritionally complete; A 200ml serving of SMA PRO Progress Kids provides the toddler with more than 50% of the recommended daily allowance of essential vitamins and minerals such iron, zinc, calcium, vitamin A, D and Omega 3 and 6.5 • Is made up of a unique blend of ingredients called NUTRI-STEPS™ which complement the weaning diet of your little one.5
Omega 3&6
Omega 3 and 6 are essential fatty acids important for the development of the brain and eyesight of your toddler.1,3
Iodine
Iodine promotes the normal growth of the toddler by allowing the proper development of the toddler’s bones and brain.5

You should always seek the advice of a doctor, midwife, health visitor, public health nurse, dietician or pharmacist on the need for and proper method of use of infant formulae and on all matters of infant feeding. Good maternal nutrition is important for the preparation and maintenance of breastfeeding. Introducing partial bottle-feeding may have negative effect on breastfeeding and reversing a decision not to breastfeed is difficult. Social and financial implications should be considered when selecting a method of infant feeding. Infant Formulae should always be prepared and used as directed. FOR THE FIRST YEAR OF LIFE!
We all want our babies to have healthy bones, good muscle power and sharp eyesight, so what does your tot need to develop these? When your baby’s about six months old, you may get a few hints that it’s time for weaning. Just like us, babies need a healthy, wellbalanced diet. They need foods which provide all the nutrients, vitamins and minerals they need to grow up healthy and strong. We outlined some of the essential vitamins, minerals and water required for the first year of life.
CALCIUM & VITAMIN D
for STRONG BONES Calcium is important for strong bones, good teeth and growth. Vitamin D works in conjunction with calcium. Vitamin D also plays a crucial role, as it is essential for proper bone formulation. Without the D vitamin, the body cannot absorb calcium. Calcium is found in both breastmilk and formula milk. EAT ME FOR STRONGER BONES: Spinach, broccoli, wheat cereals, dairy products, oily fish, pulses, white bread & green leafy vegetables.
VITAMIN A
for SHARP EYESIGHT Two of the most important nutrients which promote good eye sight are omega 3 fatty acids and Vitamin A. Vitamin A is also essential for growth, healthy skin, tooth enamel and above all it boosts the baby’s immune system. EAT ME FOR SHARP EYESIGHT: Omega 3 fatty acid is abundant in breast milk and formula milks, but fish and ground fax seeds are also good sources of Omega 3. Vitamin A can be found in liver, oily fish, carrots, dark green leafy vegetables like broccoli, orange, red fruit and vegetables such as red peppers and tomatoes.
VITAMIN C
for HEALTHY TEETH Healthy gums mean healthy teeth and one of the most important vitamins for promoting healthy gums is vitamin C. Vitamin C is also needed for growth, healthy tissue and healing of wounds as it helps to fight infection. Calcium is, of course, another crucial nutrient for teeth development. EAT ME FOR HEALTHY GUMS: Fruit and Vegetables particularly broccoli, sweet potatoes, sweet peppers, potatoes, citrus fruits, kiwi, strawberries and blackcurrants.
IRON
for HEALTHY BLOOD & MUSCLES As your babies become mobile and move from standing to walking, parents notice a marked increase in the strength of their muscles. Iron as well as Vitamin E play a crucial role for helping muscles and other tissues to form. While our babies are busy growing, they need energy and healthy blood to power their bodies.
VITAMIN E
for GLOSSY HAIR Every parent wants their baby to grow thick, glossy hair and one of the best ways to achieve this is by making sure that your baby gets plenty of beta carotene in his/her diet. Vitamin E is also responsible for the composition of the cell structure. It’s the main nutrient for healthy skin, nails and hair. EAT ME FOR GLOSSY HAIR & HEALTHY SKIN Find beta carotene in hearty vegetables like carrots, sweet potatoes, pumpkin and butternut squash. Wholegrain cereals, oats, avocados, tomatoes are great for vitamin E.
EAT ME FOR HEALTHY BLOOD & MUSCLES: Red meat, oily fish, dried fruit especially apricots, green leafy vegetables, lentils and beans.

CARING FOR In comparison to adults, the skin of newborns and infants is not yet fully formed and is therefore quite fragile. At the time of birth, the skin is very thin and covered with a protective film, called vernix caseosa, which disappears immediately at birth because it ends its function, which is to protect the skin against maceration caused by amniotic fluid womb. The secretion of sebum decreases rapidly after birth, thus leaving the skin rather vulnerable and, in the weeks following birth, dry skin is a common occurrence. In the first months of life, the skin is still quite thin, with a thickness that is about half that of adults. The skin is therefore
baby’s skin
unable for the moment to ensure effective protection and hence is more subject to alterations and irritations with possible infections and allergies.
In relation to their weight, the skin surface of children is proportionally greater than that of an adult. This leads to an increased concentration of substances absorbed through the skin, or increased transcutaneous absorption, increasing the risk of problems due to the use of unsuitable cosmetic products. In addition, the first months of life are characterised by a low level of sweating, and therefore poor temperature control leading to greater risks of heat strokes. The
production of melanin is lower, compared to adults, which results in less protection against the harmful effects of the sun and increased vulnerability towards reddening of the skin. The skin of a newborn has a limited defence capacity against bacteriological contamination compared to the skin of an adult, and is therefore more prone to infections. This is due to the different skin acidity level, the so called PH factor. This acidity is therefore vital to prevent infections. The use of cleansers which have a different PH level from the skin, in the first months of life, can increase the risks of skin irritation, and with it itchiness and scratching.

The BARRIeR FuNCTION The adult’s most superficial skin layer, the epidermis, is rich in fats and corneal scales that are essential for maintaining the correct moisture level within the skin. These structures regulate the evaporation rate of the water originating from the depth of our body, preventing excessive losses. This function enables us to have a well hydrated, soft and smooth skin. Children, especially infants from 0 – 24 months have a much thinner skin and the production of lipids is still rather limited. The consequence is that they are more prone to having very dry skin which is also highly sensitive, and easily aggravated by external factors, and inappropriate cleansers. Apart from producing dryness, these factors can modify the barrier function of the skin. When bathing babies therefore, it is important to look after the skin, choosing cleansers which do not strip the skin off its natural moisture-grease layer, which is its natural defence mechanism. At the end of a bath, it is recommended to apply cream, or a soothing and hydrating body milk to prevent dry skin which is so frequent during the first months of life.

INTRODUCING A
SOOTHER TO MY BABY Love them or hate them, parents have used soothers for centuries. As the name suggests, parents use them to calm and settle babies and sometimes, toddlers too. Babies are soothed by the action of sucking. You may find your baby needs to suck on something for comfort when he is awake and not feeding. As he gets older and finds other ways to soothe himself, he will need to do this less. Some parents could not get through the day without giving their baby a soother, whereas other parents strongly disapprove of their use. You may decide you definitely will not use one, but change your mind when faced with your crying baby. Choosing the right soother for your baby It may be a question of trial and error before you find a soother that your baby will accept. Some babies refuse to take a soother at all. Most soothers come with a silicone or rubber teat, and a plastic or silicone mouth shield and handle. The mouth shield prevents your baby from choking on, or swallowing, the teat. Some brands are all one piece, so there are no joins or cracks that could come apart or harbour germs. Latex or rubber soothers are softer and more flexible than silicone, but they do not last as long. Silicone soothers may be easier to keep free from germs than latex dummies. Orthodontic soothers are flatter than traditional cherry-shaped soothers. They are shaped to encourage your baby to suck in the same way as when he is breastfeeding. These may have less of an effect on how your baby’s teeth develop.
What are the advantages of using a soother? 1. A soother may soothe your baby or help him settle to sleep. 2. The act of sucking can relieve pain. For example, it may help your baby if he sucks on a soother when he is having his immunisations. 3. A soother may help if your baby is premature. If he is given a soother to suck on before feeds, he may adapt more quickly from tube-feeding to bottle-feeding. He may also be calmer and settle more easily before and after his feeds. 4. Premature babies who are given a soother also have shorter hospital stays.
What are the disadvantages of using a soother? Using a dummy for long periods can result in repeated middle ear infections: • Sucking may channel bacteria from your baby’s mouth into the narrow tubes between his ears and throat. • If your baby uses a dummy a lot, it may affect the structure of his mouth, which may mean mucus does not drain as well along his Eustachian tubes. The longer your baby uses a soother, the more likely it is to change the way his teeth grow. This can result in an overbite or cross-bite, where the top and bottom teeth do not meet properly. You may notice this if your child uses his soother beyond two years or three years old. The worst effects are usually seen in children who use a soother for four years or more.

Nutri-mune range The new range of Plasmon Nutri-mune Milks are unique in that they contain the exclusive ingredient L. paracasei CBA L74 which is the result of 9 years of research at the ‘Centro di Nutrizione Plasmon’ . This ingredient, together with the addition of Vitamins A, C and D, ensures the proper functioning of the child’s immune system. Apart from this the milks do not contain palm oil which is known to affect the absorption of calcium from the milk by the baby. When we talk about the immune system the key word is ‘balance’ from the very first instances of life the human body comes in contact with ‘good’ substances, like food and
nutrients, and also with ‘bad’ substances like bacteria. At this point the body must be able to provide the right reaction: fight the attack of pathogens and bacteria or tolerate and absorb nutrients from food. This balance which is established in the first years of life will have an impact on successive years, and can reduce the risk of developing allergies and other illnesses. Breast milk is the ideal food for babies and among its many beneficial properties it protects the child from infections while encouraging the growth of ‘good’ bacteria which live in the intestines. It is precisely these live bacteria which sustain a healthy immune system in the child.
Plasmon Nutri-mune milks contain L. paracasei CBA L74 which is a probiotic, that is, a live fermented milk product which encourages the growth of beneficial bacteria in the gut. This exclusive ingredient is added during the production process under strict quality control and the pasteurisation process ensures that this active ingredient remains stable. Plasmon Nutri-mune milks are made from cows’ milk collected from top quality cows reared on farms of the Oasi Programme. Here they are fed the right kind of food and kept under optimum conditions under the strict control of veterinarians, because a healthy cow gives nutritious milk.
Did you know that...
Each farm has around 25 cows and each cow has a name!
Plasmon Nutri-mune range is available in both powder and liquid format and can be found in all leading outlets. Should you wish more information about this range kindly contact Vivian Corporation on 2258 8600 28 • VIVIAN BABY • september 2016

Baby Pasta Organic Suitable from 7 months 12 meals Cook in 6 minutes Introduces texture & encourages chewing Naturally low in fat No additives or preservatives Suitable for vegetarians
You may think that you’ve got it all figured out when your baby is happily slurping his way through pureed carrots and sweet potatoes, however its then time to reach another milestone – introducing lumpy foods. The introduction of lumpy foods is fundamental as the muscles used for chewing are the same ones used for speech development. Even though it might be tricky to introduce lumpy food, this step has to be taken as babies may become too lazy about chewing, and the longer you leave it the harder it will be.
Annabel Karmels’ organic pasta is naturally low in fat and a good source of energy for growing little ones. This pasta is a kitchen cupboard essential containing essential nutrients and minerals including protein, fibre amongst others. Baby pasta blends well with meat, fish or vegetables. Annabel Karmel’s ‘Make it Easy’ organic pasta shapes are suitable for babies from 7 months onwards. Pasta is a great way to introduce lumpy food to your little one’s diet. Go on, give it a try!
‘‘Problems with lumps are very common and one of the best ways to make the transition from smooth purees to more lumpy textures is to stir tiny pasta shapes into your baby’s favourite purees. It’s important to introduce texture and small lumps as early as possible as the older they are; the harder babies will find it to accept lumpy food. I find that overall lumpiness is generally more acceptable to a smooth puree with the occasional lump that then gets spat out.’’ Annabel Karmel 30 • VIVIAN BABY • september 2016
ORGANIC PASTA RECIPE This is a really tasty baby pasta recipe to make if you want to introduce your baby to spinach. Mixing tiny baby pasta shapes into your baby’s food is a good way to add texture. THE SCHOOL SPECIALIST SINCE 1920 We started writing our history in 1920 when the first “lapis” signed F.I.L.A. appeared in Florence. Since then, whole generations learned how to write, draw, scribble, write thoughts, jot down dreams and to express emotions through the kind mark of a pencil and, later on, to felt-tip pens, chalks, ball-point pens, tempera colours, modelling material, etc. That’s why we consider our products as objects belonging to everyone, and F.I.L.A. as a family company, and we wish all of us to always have lot of dreams to color, model, paint and write in history. www.fila.it
