Breastfeeding is best for babies. You should always seek the advice of a doctor, midwife, health visitor, public health nurse, dietician or pharmacist on the need for and proper method of use of infant formulae and on all matters of infant feeding. Good maternal nutrition is important for the preparation and maintenance of breastfeeding. Introducing partial bottle-feeding may have negative effect on breastfeeding and reversing a decision not to breastfeed is difficult. Social and financial implications should be considered when selecting a method of infant feeding. Infant Formulae should always be prepared and used as directed. Inappropriate foods or feeding methods, or improper use of infant formula, may present a health hazard.

Progressing from
with smA Progress Kids Congratulations! The first year of parenthood is through...and what a year that has been! Now that your loved ones are over one year of age, they are showing their true colours and their individual characters. From first steps to first words to the first beaker, toddlerhood is a period of milestones.
What is growing up milk? Growing up milk is a fortified formula milk specifically designed for children aged one year to four years. Growing up milks are based on cow’s milk products and tweaked to make sure that toddlers are taking the correct nutrients and in the right concentrations. Since growing up milk is especially designed for toddlers, it is of utmost importance that it is not given to babies under one year of age. It is not a breast milk substitute.
How much growing up milk should I give? At the age of one year most children would have established a set eating pattern and are able to eat most family foods. Growing up milk should be given to supplement the diet and not to replace meals, therefore it is important to ensure that it is not given in excess, so as not to spoil their appetite. 1 to 2 beakers of 200ml each are enough to provide your little ones with the necessary daily nutrients.

Why is it important to move on to SMA Progress Kids? There is a large spectrum of vitamins and minerals added to SMA Progress Kids to make it nutritionally balanced and adapted for active toddlers. However there are some main vitamins and minerals that are particularly important at this stage of growth.
Vitamin D This helps the absorption of calcium; therefore it is needed for normal growth and development of the bones. Vitamin D is also involved in the immune system function amongst others. Good sources of vitamin D include eggs and fish oil, 2x200ml servings of SMA Progress Kids will give your toddler 86% of their daily reference intake of 7 micrograms.
Iron Another important mineral due to its role in brain development. Iron contributes to the normal oxygen transport in the body. Iron can be found in meat, liver and vegetables (but it’s less bioavailable), 2 x 200ml servings will give your toddler 60% of their daily reference intake of 8 milligrams.
Omega 3 and 6 Otherwise known as essential fatty acids, are the good fats which help in brain and eyesight development. Omega 3 and 6 are mostly found in fish oil and seed oils, such as rapeseed oil. SMA Progress Kids contains these fatty acids to complete your toddler’s diet.
Calcium This is needed for normal growth development in children, and as expected it is a mineral that is very important in toddler’s diets. Calcium is found in milk based products (cheeses and yoghurts) and 2x200ml servings provide 57% of their daily reference intake of 550 milligrams.
Does growing up milk have too much sugar? Growing up milk such as SMA Progress Kids contains lactose, which is the sugar found naturally occurring in milk. There are no added sugars in SMA Progress Kids, and although it has a slight vanilla taste, it does not affect the total calories in the milk. A serving of SMA Progress Kids has the same amount of sugar and calories as any other milk in the SMA nutrition range.

Sending my child Which nursery would be “good” for my baby and toddler? Is there such a thing as a “good” nursery?
Like us on Facebook (Chicco Malta) 8 • VIVIAN BABY • september 2015
Doesn’t being a “good parent mean that you have to look after your baby yourself all of the time? Does sending your baby to nursery mean that you are therefore a “bad parent? There are many options that parents might want to consider if they both work and would like to, or need to continue working for various reasons. For example both or one parent working on reduced hours; teleworking; flexitime and changing jobs to mention a few. However once parental leave is over, one must have all decisions in place. There could be times when one would need help with childcare. For single parents the situation may get more challenging. In recent years nurseries in Malta have increased drastically in quantity and quality. So the question “Are we still ‘good’ parents if we send our baby/ toddler to a nursery? needs to be rephrased to “which nursery is “good for the physical and psychological wellbeing and education of our child? What makes a good nursery and how do we come to recognize which nursery is good for my child? There is nothing better than getting information than through word of mouth. Ask around. Go and visit various nurseries. Dedicate time to this. How safe and secure are the premises? What qualifications do the members of staff have? Is there frequent turn over of staff? What is the ratio per child? Does the head of the nursery take time in asking you questions about your child: about allergies, other physical ailments, sleep patterns, eating habits and the child’s developmental history? Are the ages of the children mixed, at times, so that the younger ones can learn from the older ones? Do the children have the opportunity to be alone at times, have quiet time, even if the others are playing in a group? Is there a language policy? Is language enhanced with visuals and key word
signing? Are all children welcome including disabled children? Is there an open door policy where parents or authorized significant others are encouraged to drop in at any time? Are there strict rules about: collection of children; fire drills; illness policy? Make sure that the common nursery activities are available like: painting, drawing, glueing and sticking; imaginative play with the sand pit, water table, play house or dressing up; story time and reading; construction blocks and dough, jigsaws and puzzles, a lot of moving and dancing to music; singing; simple cooking, quiet time and opportunities of being alone. Is the day well structured? The research is not clear with regard to the effects on children under the age of three who attend nursery. There have been very few studies and the variables to consider are too many, for example: the quality of day care; the number
of hours in care; the child’s age; the attachment process with the parents etc. To summarise the research seems to show that there should be no concerns when children are 3 years of age and over; a small probability of some hyperactivity but positive effects on cognitive and language development for the under 3’s and indications of some concerns for the under 2’s. Brain research indicates that the under 3’s tend to be stressed when obliged to relate in a group setting. They are not ready for it, especially when dealing with other under 3 year olds. The overall evidence is, however, not consistent and is, therefore, inconclusive. Ideally parents need to secure a positive attachment with their child before entrusting their child in the hands of others especially for long periods of time.
Kathy Sylva, a researcher at Oxford University, states: “a child who is securely attached to its parents and who is growing up in a loving, caring home will be more resilient that is he will be stronger to cope. There are many factors you need to take into consideration before deciding when and where to send your child to nursery. Ultimately it is a very personal choice.

GETTInG InTo BacK To School rITualS! Summer fun is almost over for about 73 thousand Maltese students. It is time to put away their swimsuits, dust off the book bags and head back to school soon. One of the hardest things about going back to school is getting back into the routine. It is hard for children and parents, who have had months away from the rigidly scheduled days of classes, homework, sports practice and other extracurricular activities. Here are some tips that may help you get organised and get back into the groove. • Put bedtime battles to rest now. If you start a week or two before the first day of school, you can slowly adjust the lax summer sleep schedule to a school night bedtime. Put your children to bed 10 minutes earlier each night -- that way the switch from 9:30 to 8 will not be such a shock. • Prepare for the deluge ... of forms, that is. In the coming weeks, you will be getting everything from school supplies lists to health forms to permission slips to contact lists. Think through the organization of all that information now. Collect all forms you receive for each child and go through them at one time with your child. Set up a filing system for everything. SPonSorED By
10 • VIVIAN BABY • september 2015
• Post your child’s class schedule somewhere you can see. You are guaranteed a better response when you ask “What games did you play in PE today?” or “What did Ms. Sue show you in art?” rather than “How was school?” • Shop your closets before hitting the stores. You never know what you might find. There may be barely used or new school supplies, forgotten clothes, or an older backpack that is suddenly trendy again. • Keep receipts. Sure, the fancy ink pens look cool in the store, but what happens if your child gets to school and the teacher requires they use pencil only? Also, you never know if there will be new dress code rules to comply with. If you retain receipts when you go school shopping, you
will not be out the cash if you would have bought the wrong thing. • Volunteer your time or expertise. Dozens of research studies have shown that children whose parents are involved in their school do better academically and socially. Teachers appreciate parents who volunteer to come into the classroom or who are willing to raise funds for needed supplies or to advocate on their behalf. • run inside and play. This year, when you get home from work and school, do not jump into the chores. Rather, make it a point to spend at least 15 to 30 minutes connecting as a family: play a game, take a walk, snuggle on the couch. This simple tweak in your evening schedule will do wonders to reduce whining, sibling rivalry and marital strife!

Supplementation Improves Learning, Concentration and Behaviour in Children
D
uring the last two decades, many intervention trials have confirmed that fatty acid supplements, such as Efamol Brain, which are aimed at correcting LC-PUFA deficiencies including DHA, can improve learning, concentration and behaviour in children. Soon after the studies carried out with children with learning disorders, omega-3 LC-PUFA supplementation was found to enhance brain function in normal healthy children. A randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical study including 33 healthy boys ages 8 – 10 years of age taking a low dose (400mg / day) or high dose (1200mg / day) DHA supplement for 8 weeks, found both DHA groups had significantly increased blood DHA and significantly greater increases in brain activity in parts of the brain involved in sustaining attention. The higher the DHA, the slower the

reaction time, meaning the children were less impulsive and were thinking more about the correct response1. The DHA Oxford Learning and Behaviour (DOLAB) study, a randomised, double-blind, placebocontrolled trial including 362 healthy children aged 7 – 9 years attending a mainstream primary school in Oxfordshire, UK, reported reading gains of 20% to 50% in subgroups of poorer readers after taking 600mg/day DHA for 16 weeks. In addition, working memory was greater in children whose initial performance was lowest, parents reported overall improvement in behaviour2. In an observational portion of this study including 493 children, lower blood DHA was associated with poorer reading ability, working memory performance and higher levels of parent rated oppositional behaviour, emotional lability, anxiety,

psychosomatic symptoms and ADHD symptoms3. Nested within the DOLAB study, was another investigating the association between LC-PUFAs status and sleep, and the effect of DHA Supplementation on sleep in healthy children4. In 395 of the children, 40% had clinical-level sleep problems and higher blood DHA was associated with significantly better sleep. Of these children, 362 were randomly assigned to either 600mg of DHA or a placebo for 16 weeks. In a sub-sample of 43 children with clinical-level sleep problems, DHA significantly improved total sleep disturbance scores leading to 7 few wake episodes, shorter nightwakings, and 58 minutes more sleep per night. The authors of the study stated that “the physical, mental and social benefits that would be expected to follow such an improvement are profound”.

CHICCO NATURAL FEELING
FEEDING BOTTLES Chicco’s experience in the world of childhood and continuous research have led to the creation of the NaturalFeeling baby bottle line, which allows you to feed your baby naturally during every growth stage, because it is the only one that adapts to the baby’s sucking, which changes month after month, thanks to the three teats – inclined, rounded, and elongated – with different shapes and specifications. Teats are made with soft silicone to ensure a natural feeling, like the mother’s breast. The anti-colic valve, featured in all the teats, reduces the risk of colic. Every mother knows that breastfeeding is the most natural thing there is. All mothers know by experience that feeding time is a special moment of contact and cuddles, whether they are breastfeeding or using a feeding bottle. If the mother opts to use a feeding bottle, it is essential to choose the right feeding bottle and teat. The latter must be extremely soft, elastic, and extensible to allow the baby to move the mouth and tongue the same way as during breastfeeding. You can choose a specific teat for every age. Babies change their way of sucking over time and their needs also

change during the different stages of their growth. During the first few months, it is recommended to use a rounded teat that allows babies to keep their mouth open and attach correctly, as with the mother’s breast. This type of teat is ideal for mixed feeding, as it simulates attachment to the breast and gives the same feeling as a natural feed. As the months go by, the mouth of a baby evolves. Babies create a stronger “seal with their lips, sucking and gradually swallowing as an adult. During this stage, a narrower lip rest and a more elongated teat are recommended. Or you can choose a versatile teat,
with a soft and rounded shape but of a medium size, suitable for all ages and accepted by all babies. NaturalFeeling teats The three NaturalFeeling evolutive teats are the only ones to have different shapes and characteristics designed for the specific needs of a baby during growth. All are equipped with twin anticolic valve to prevent the ingestion of air and are made of soft silicone to ensure a natural feeling, as the mother’s breast, ideal from the first few days of life. The flexors at the base simulate the mother’s breast and increase the elasticity and flexibility of the teat.

They can be served both at room temperature or warmed; meals can be warmed by standing the pouch in
hot water for a few minutes. Since the packaging contains foil do not microwave the pouch but pour the contents in a microwave proof bowl, and warm on high power for 20-30 seconds, mix well to make sure there are no hot spots which can burn your babies mouth. Pouches should be stored in a cool dry place, and once opened they can be stored in the fridge for up to 48 hours unless warmed.
Stage 1 organic purees can be given from 4 months of age and in this day and age, parents are constantly on the go, so it can be quite challenging to keep a freshly prepared snack or home-cooked meal in hand. The squeezable baby food pouches make weaning simple, easy and ultra-convenient for parents to feed

What is organic? Organic faming involves the production of wholesome livestock and crops while maintaining a healthy ecological balance, and respecting natural ecosystems. Organic farming follows a set of rigorous guidelines and practices to ensure that the agricultural system operates as naturally as possible:
1
No genetically modified organisms (GMO) are used
3
• A genetically modified organism refers to any living thing (animal or plant) containing DNA from another organism. This is usually done to give the organism additional powers, such as increased growth rate or insect resistance.
pesticides, fertilisers, 2 Synthetic livestock antibiotics and food additives are used with very strict limits and when possible avoided • Synthetic pesticides, fertilisers and livestock antibiotics are used in conventional farming. They are chemicals used to increase yield, and reduce the effect of harmful parasites on the crops, however have a lasting negative effect on the environment and possibly on the consumer.
22 • VIVIAN BABY • september 2015
Using natural methods of enhancing crop growth such as manure for fertiliser, crop rotation and the use of natural pest control • Manure, crop rotation and natural pest control are three methods that can be used instead of the conventional fertilisers and pesticides, thus decreasing synthetic chemicals emitted in the environment.
4
Livestock is raised using organic feeds, and in free-range open-air systems • By giving the animals the most humane conditions possible the producer ensures more nutritious meat, with less fat content. Organically grown fruit, vegetables and livestock are processed, manufactured and packaged by a supply chain specifically for organic food therefore at no point in time will organic food be in contact with conventional products.

THE USE OF AN
electric toothbrush Electric toothbrushes are popular with a growing number of adults who find that the technological advances in toothbrushes are making them more effective at fighting plaque build-up. Many parents are also considering whether electric toothbrushes can offer significant advantages in keeping their children’s teeth and gums clean and healthy. One of the more daunting challenges for a parent is finding ways to get kids thinking about brushing their teeth on a regular basis as well as brushing for the right amount of time when they do. Many parents find that an electric toothbrush can increase the amount of time a child spends in brushing, because they are a unique and appealing item for children. It helps to consider the many advantages an electric toothbrush has over a traditional one when it comes to caring for kids’ teeth.
Building Better Brushing Habits A favorable argument for using a kid’s electric toothbrush is that the features in a toothbrush are designed to make brushing an enjoyable experience that children can repeat every day. Because of its uniqueness, an electric toothbrush can help a child develop good brushing habits from an early age. These habits are usually carried on into adolescence Features in Kids’ Electric Toothbrushes and adulthood and can potentially last Unlike electric toothbrushes made a lifetime. Conclusion Finding ways to help a child improve dental hygiene habits is one of the reasons for the surge in popularity of kids’ electric toothbrushes. A great way to teach a child good habits and have him or her act on those habits as part of a routine is to introduce some fun and enjoyment into what they are learning. Electric toothbrushes are designed to meet those challenges through creative and unique representations of the things that children enjoy, such as cartoon characters and superheroes. By melding fun and playful imagery with the practical necessity of brushing teeth on a regular and consistent basis, electric toothbrushes are a great tool that parents can utilise to teach their children dental habits that can last them the rest of their lives.

Nuvita products are available from all leading baby shops, supermarkets and pharmacies.
Features in kids’ electric toothbrushes 1. Brush Heads and Handles Kids’ electric toothbrushes are smaller than adult versions in order to be easier for children to handle. The brush heads on kids’ versions are smaller in size in order to make it easier to reach the smaller spaces in a child’s mouth. The handles on these brushes are shaped in a way that is comfortable for a child to hold. Handles usually incorporate unique patterns and shapes that are attractive to children and encourage them to brush longer.
4. appropriate Power levels Electric toothbrushes that are made specifically for children have reduced power levels compared to those made for adults. Reduced power ensures that children do not damage teeth or gums if they are not paying proper attention to their brushing habits. Reduced power also ensures that children enjoy a comfortable brushing experience without fear of hurting themselves.
2. soft and rounded Bristles The bristles on the brush head of a kid’s electric toothbrush should always be soft and rounded on the tips. If the bristles are too firm, then they can easily damage a child’s gum line and the enamel on the teeth. All electric toothbrushes are designed to be used with very light pressure because the rotation or oscillation of the brushes do the work, not the force of pushing against the teeth with hard bristles. Soft and round bristles ensure the child has a safe and comfortable experience with an electric toothbrush.
3. Brushing Timers Brushing timers are included on some electric toothbrushes, and they are a wonderful feature for children. Timers give a child a set amount of time within which to brush teeth, and children usually accept that time period as part of their routine after they have become accustomed to the timer. This helps children develop a sense of how long one should brush the teeth, and this can carry over into their adult lives.

THE SCHOOL SPECIALIST SINCE 1920 We started writing our history in 1920 when the first “lapis” signed F.I.L.A. appeared in Florence. Since then, whole generations learned how to write, draw, scribble, write thoughts, jot down dreams and to express emotions through the kind mark of a pencil and, later on, to felt-tip pens, chalks, ball-point pens, tempera colours, modelling material, etc. That’s why we consider our products as objects belonging to everyone, and F.I.L.A. as a family company, and we wish all of us to always have lot of dreams to color, model, paint and write in history. www.fila.it 28 • VIVIAN BABY • september 2015
