Brothers Sisters The arrival of the second child will bring new changes with it, which will not pass unnoticed from your other little one.

is

Neil Cort

It is very important that you prepare your self for the arrival of the second child – talk to someone who has gone through it. What do I do if my first child is jealous of the new born? This feeling is very natural, so you do not need to feel guilty or panic. • It is very important that you prepare your child that a brother or sister will soon be joining the family from beforehand. Make it exciting, such as…”You will have someone to play with!” • Give him / her the attention required by spending some time with him / her for example, stay playing together whilst the baby sleeps. In this manner s/he will not feel deprived from your attention. • Never show any preferential treatment towards one of them, each child has his own unique character, which might be totally different from that of his / her sibling. It is very important that

It is very important that you create a positive relationship with each of them, nurturing their on way of doing things Carlton Vella

you create a positive relationship with each of them, nurturing their own way of doing things. This will make them feel important and unique at the same time. • Try to create situations where both children interact and play together, to help them to socialise and get to know each other better. • Try and get help and support from the grand parents, where they can hold the baby for you, whilst you

spend time with the other child, giving him/ her the attention required. (You can also use this opportunity for some ME time) • One day or another there will be arguments between the two. Do Not Panic and only intervene when you deem necessary. It is very important that you let them learn to deal with such situations on their own. (It always depends on the situation!)

Mamma. . . che Bontà!

We are very excited to introduce a new variety in our product range – Bonta della Mamma. This range brings a new concept to the baby food section –vegetable purees in convenient pouches. There are three varieties in this range: • Base Pappa – Mixed Vegetables • Vellutata – Marrows & Peas • Vellutata – Carrots & Pumpkin The Bonta della Mamma provides the mother with the convenience of having readily pureed vegetables to prepare a healthy meal for her baby without any hassle, with the same great taste and nutritional value, even when you are not at home.

The main differences between the Soup base and the Vegetable Purees are the following: • Soup Base is suitable from the early age of 4 months. • Vegetable Purees are creamier and are suitable for babies over 6 months. This range is made exclusively from fresh vegetables, harvested naturally under the Oasi Plasmon concept. No preservatives and colourants are added to the recipe and all three varieties are Gluten Free. Try out these new items and let us know what you think by sending us an email on plasmon@viviancorp.com

Ask for them at your favourite outlet

New Product Plasmon has also introduced another variety in the strained vegetables range – Pumpkin & Chickpeas. This variety of strained vegetables provides your child with a delicate and mild taste of the ever so tasty pumpkin along with the high nutritional value of the chickpeas. The latter are a very good source of proteins and fibre, and are very easy to digest.

Try it out with pasta or with a jar of strained meat 8

Did you know that a daily helping of Olive Oil, helps our intestines to be healthier? The following are some points which one should know about Olive Oil: • Olive oil is rich in Vitamins A, B-1, B-2, C, D, E and K as well as iron. • It is highly beneficial for the digestive system and acts as a mild laxative, preventing constipation. • The body’s cells incorporate the valuable fatty acids from the oil, making arteries more agile and skin more radiant. • The amount of oleic acid in olive oil is about the same as that found in a mother’s milk and is thus the best growth supplement for infants. • It is also effective in treating urinary tract infections and gall bladder problems. • It accelerates brain development and strengthens the bones. • When it comes to infants, one can dribble some olive oil on strained meats, vegetables, fish etc… It can also be added to the savoury cereals.

r e l d d o h t i T w g n i p o C s m u r Tant child your precious d fin ay m u yo ’s d rt of your child of two years ol pa e a ag of e h th uc d m un Aro his can be as easant! r tantrums! T gh much less pl le ou dd th to k, ps ea lo sp ve de ile or learning to sm development as

Seeing your little baby turn into a screaming ball of fury is never a nice experience, especially when you are out in public, making this one of the more stressful milestones you will probably experience as a parent. Dealing with tantrum behaviour is so difficult because it’s upsetting to see your little one so distraught, and there’s the added fear of being labelled a ‘bad parent’ because your toddler is screaming at the top of his or her voice whilst you are trying to do your shopping and other people are trying to do theirs. Relax, you’re not a bad parent and while those who don’t have children may look, those with children of their own will understand. The good news is that they will grow out of it and however hard it is now, this tantrum behaviour will soon be banished to distant memory. Why do toddlers tantrum? Toddlers tantrum because they’re overwhelmed by the frustration of wanting or needing something but not being able to 10

express themselves in the right way to get it. In real terms this usually means they’re tired, hungry, bored, want attention, don’t want to do something or simply because they don’t know what they want. How to minimise the risk of a tantrum Keep a regular routine Toddlers need to feel secure, to feel happy and a regular routine can help them feel comfortable with what’s going on around them even if things are changing. Set meal, drink and snack times, an afternoon nap and structured bedtime routine (i.e. bath, story then bed) can all help your toddler stay calm and better able to understand their place in the complicated world around them. Explain things A lot of the frustration toddlers experience is because they don’t understand why they’re not allowed to do things. By communicating with your toddler, no matter how basic, why they are allowed to do some things but

not others will help them to cope when you say no. Be prepared When a tantrum is brewing, employing a diversionary tactic that can help keep your little one calm like keeping your toddler’s favourite toy or book in your bag can be a good idea so that you can retrieve it quickly and distract them. Reward good behaviour Tantrums can often be a cry for attention and if you consistently reward your toddler for doing this like giving them something to make them stop, they can quickly learn that throwing themselves on the floor and crying is the quickest way to get whatever they want. To prevent this you should focus on ignoring the tantrum completely, which can be very difficult sometimes, but necessary, and reward good behaviour only. Be consistent Perhaps most importantly of all you should be consistent in your parenting approach. Letting

your toddler know that you’re in charge is important and will actually help them to feel more secure and consequently reduce tantrum behaviour. To do this you’ll need to stick to your guns. If you said that your toddler had to put on their coat before the tantrum follow this through after they’ve calmed down. Don’t give in to their demands simply because they’ve tantrumed to get their own way. Consistency in your approach will help them to learn that throwing a temper tantrum isn’t acceptable behaviour and definitely isn’t the way to get whatever they want. Make sure you agree guidelines on what they’re allowed with your partner, grandparents and anyone else who spends time looking after your child.

What to do when your toddle r tantrums

Stay calm It’s difficult but getting worked up yourself will only make matters worse and make it even harder to calm your toddler down. If you find it difficult not to get stressed by your toddlers behaviour find a diversionary tactic for yourself, either counting to ten, taking some deep breaths or even putting your toddler in their cot or play pen, walk away and give yourself a five minute break.

Keep them out of harms way When toddlers have a temper tantrum they often completely lose control of their behaviour which can mean that they hurt themselves. Make sure you take them out of harms way. You could try holding them gently although if this seems to set them off even more, moving anything that could potentially be a ‘hazard’ may be a better idea.

Get down on their level When your toddler tantrums or looks like they’re about to tantrum try sitting or kneeling down on the floor so that you can make direct eye contact with them. Reasoning with them in toddler language, doing something to distract them or giving them a hug can seem much more approachable from this position. Pretend it isn’t happening Walking away a little and looking like you’re not paying attention to the tantrum (while still keeping a sly eye on them) can calm your toddler down pretty quickly once they realise they’ve lost their audience, and remember at all times to stay calm – they will grow out of this stage! 11
