In summer this is probably the easiest ascent of a Munro in the southern Highlands with a good path to follow all the way. route 1 Start from car park ns35968 98631 (signposted) at end of public road from Balmaha to Rowardennan, just beyond Rowardennan Hotel. 2

Path starts behind toilets (signposted Ben Lomond Hill Path).

Footpath to Ben Lomond crosses forest road (90m) ns36448 98702 and continues through area where trees have been felled.

Go through gate with sign Welcome to Ben Lomond.

ns37655 9987 (400m) go through another gate.

nn37630 00415 (550m) follow path along flattish section of Sron Aonaich ridge with summit visible to n.

nn37253 02321 (800m) follow path as climbs steeply in zig zags to summit ridge.

At about 930m reach summit ridge nn37114 02563. Follow path nw along summit ridge.

Reach summit Ben Lomond (974m) nn36714 02851 (trig point).

10 Return by same route. dogs: there are cattle and sheep on Ben Lomond after first gate with sign warning of livestock grazing on hillside. winter conditions: ice axe and crampons needed for summit ridge.

An ascent of one of Scotland’s iconic mountains. route: 1

Take single track road that leaves b846 between Coshieville and Tummel Bridge (signposted Schiehallion Road) Drive about 3km along road. At stone cairn with plaque turn left into car park nn75260 55800 (signposted Braes of Foss). Pay and display (ÂŁ2): toilets are closed in winter.

Footpath to Schiehallion starts at rear of car park by picnic bench and sign reading No Overnight Parking. A short distance along path go through gate by information board.

Follow path out of trees, over a couple of footbridges and across moorland to reach old sheep pen.

Ignore faint track at sheep pen and continue to follow constructed path up heathery flank of Schiehallion.

At about 870m constructed path ends at cairn nn73029 54540.

A fainter path continues west along the ridge through scree. For remainder of walk along ridge to summit of Schiehallion follow line of cairns. Take care crossing boulder field.

Reach little rocky outcrop that forms summit of Schiehallion (1,083m) (small cairn) nn71399 54754.

Return by same route.

Winter conditions: Straightforward winter route though be careful at summit if rocks are ice covered/slippery, there is a steep drop on the south side. Ice axe and crampons needed. dogs: good hill for dogs – the John Muir Trust ask that you keep your dog close by to minimise disturbance to wildlife and sometimes a few sheep stray onto Schiehallion.

A circular walk taking in some of the most impressive features of Holyrood Park-the most dramatic route up Arthur’s Seat.

route: 1

Start from car park near Holyrood Palace Broad Pavement nt27044 73708 in Queen’s Drive (£1 per hour charge Mon-Fri 0830-1730). Cross Queen’s Drive and take the Radical Road (stony track) uphill below Salisbury Crags (marked by falling rocks warning sign).

Follow Radical Road along base of cliffs. Towards se end Salisbury Crags pass Hutton’s Rock then where Radical Road goes downhill bear left onto rough footpath, keeping close to cliffs and pass Hutton’s Section (information board) nt27201 72838.

Follow footpath through gap (The Hause) between end of Salisbury Crags and Arthur’s Seat

At foot of Guttit Haddie take right hand fork in path at boulder embedded in ground nt27434 72735. Follow paved path as it zig zags up hillside.

Near top of Guttit Haddie ignore left turn and keep on maintained path which traverses se away from summit of Arthur’s Seat, along hillside above golf course for short distance and tops out on Nether Hill (237m).

Walk across Nether Hill straight towards summit of Arthur’s Seat. Follow eroded paths or scramble easily up (slippery) rocks to Arthur’s Seat (251m) nt 27534 72942 (trig point).

From near trig point head E in direction of Dunsapie Loch aiming for chain fence. Pick up paved path and follow for short distance to end of fence at head of Dry Dam (valley between Lang Rig and Whinny Hill).

From here take obvious path nt27680 73018 down Lang Rig (starts with a few stone steps) heading for (ruined) St Anthony’s Chapel.

After 50m ignore left hand fork in path, keep heading for ruined chapel. Near chapel bear right onto footpath through gorse bushes that leads to ruined chapel.

10 From chapel follow stepped path below cliff face down to St Margaret’s loch 11 At lochside turn sharp left and follow path around the loch then across grass back to Holyrood Palace/car park. public transport: Lothian Buses no.35 from South Bridge/no.36 from Waverley Bridge every 15/20 min (www.lothianbuses.com or phone 0131 555 6363) or 20 mins walk from city centre. toilets: in Holyrood Park Education Centre (small modern building at northern edge of large expanse of grass to east of Holyrood Palace).
